Well, you knew this one was coming.  If you heard me once expound on the greatness of Maikel Franco, you’ve heard me expound on his greatness dozens of times and I have to say, I need to expound on how much I love this Word of the Day calendar.  It’s expounding my vocabulary!  I used it wrong there, didn’t I?  Let’s backtrack to the most basic common knowledge we have about baseball players.  They all spit.  Okay, Random Italicized Voice, let’s fast forward a bit.  Hitters sleep with a wOBA?  Now you’ve lost me.  Good, stop following me, you creeper!  Players usually take a few years to get comfortable.  Guys don’t usually peak their first full years.  Last year, Maikel Franco had a line of 67/25/88/.255/1 as a 23-year-old in his first full season.  Okay, so there were so many homers last year that David Eckstein would’ve hit 30 homers if he was still playing.  Fair enough, but you can’t possibly think Franco was a disappointment with 25 homers in his first full season.  On our Player Rater, Maikel Franco was ranked 154th overall.  Better than Marcell Ozuna, Dexter Fowler, Matt Carpenter, Craig Kimbrel and Joc Pederson.  Sure, bit apples and oranges, but orange you glad I told you?  Okay, for that, I’m going into the pun penalty box for three minutes.  *sits in penalty box, smiles showing missing front tooth*  Okay, I’m back!  So, what can we expect from Maikel Franco for 2017 fantasy baseball and what makes him a sleeper?

The Phils were dead last for runs scored last year; 39 runs behind even the Braves.  The Phils couldn’t get any runs with a glass of tap water from Tijuana and a shot of Visine.  Yet, Franco still nearly had 90 RBIs.  The next closest RBI total on the Phils last year was Freddy Galvis with 67.  Franco on simply a mediocre team last year, say, the Twins, he would’ve had 105 RBIs.  Of course, we don’t know if the Phils are going to be better this year, but they look more mediocre to me than downright dreadful.  I won’t project Maikel for 105 RBIs, but 95 RBIs feels conservative with just the mildest of upticks.  Though, with only a mild uptick, at least one Kardashian would be a porn star by now, and that hasn’t happened, so I guess there’s a little risk.  Next up, power.  He hit 25 homers with a 14.7% HR/FB%, which feels low.  He’s a power hitter; hit a few bombs last year and averaged 402+ feet on his homers.  It’s solid, he’s not hitting a ton of wall-scrappers.  Citizens Flank doesn’t just have the most accommodating fans (if a player wants to get puked on), but it also allows homers.  Franco also doesn’t strike out a ton, but he does swing the bat.  Bit similar to Jonathan Schoop or Adam Jones, but Franco makes more contact.  That sounds great, but contact can have its drawbacks.  If you swing at everything and make contact, you’re not going to make the best contact.  His Hard Contact Rate was only 30.7%, about the same as Bogaerts and Ian Desmond.  His lack of good contact really shows itself in his infield fly ball rate of 17.1%.  Infield fly balls are about the worst kind of contact.  It’s not the end of story though, Bautista and Bogaerts had worst infield fly ball rates.  There’s nothing that says Franco shouldn’t be as good as he was last year, so there’s little downside.  Then, you throw in he’s only 24 years old, starting his 2nd full major league season.  Natural progression alone tells me he’s going to be as good or better.  Do I think he can hit 39 HRs and .285?  No, not likely.  Do I think he can get to 32 homers and .280?  I think that’s optimistic, but not crazy.  For 2017, I’ll give Maikel Franco projections of 79/30/95/.277/2 in 591 ABs.

So good, really nice penalty box reference. Reminds of that photo of longtime Philadelphia Flyers captain Bobby Clarke and his toothless smile.

Fast forward to 00:21s to see his tooth fall out.

Then watch this gem as he scores the goal in OT for the win in game 2 of the Stanley Cup finals.

Love Maikel. I was all over him and I could see even the most ardent fans falling out of love because of last year. As you say it wasn’t his fault (IFF% notwithstanding) but his misery (i.e., our misery) could easily continue this year if no one picks it up a bit. Freddy Galvis being #2 on the team for RBIs is really bad and not reassuring at all. Who picks it up next year for the Phils? ToJo? Sure won’t be Ryan Howard.

    Cheers,
    Ante

@Ante GALIC: Very pumped for Maikel as well. Could produce in line with JD Martinez, at 3B and for cheaper. .255 seems like the lowest he could have possibly hit with that profile.

Re: lineup, I’m hoping that Roman Quinn gets an early look at leadoff…then put a full year of Obudel in the 2 spot, and that starts getting interesting. In any event, PHI has a better lineup that ATL!

        a. Wow! That’s it? Where’s Cram to insult all the kids when you need him? He’s prolly fishing somewhere thinking about how his roster will dominate again.

        b. No big news here. Any idea on how to get of rid pesky pigeons? Pigeons dominate the landscape in our compound. Pigeons jostle (or is it jockey) for pole position on my roof starting at 04h00, then go off somewhere after enjoying the sunrise from my rooftop then re-jostle for position on my roof again just before sunset. There’s the odd battle for John Cena-like supremacy among them during the night but generally it’s quiet.

So, any remedy to reduce the pigeon population on a slow night in Palm Springs? We could the way of keeping a pigeon coop and killing off a few for lunch. Thoughts?

        c. Hope you had a nice weekend. Mine was spent counting pigeons and identifying who’s who by their cooing sound.

        Cheers,
        Ante

            a. Thanks for the advice, will try it as soon as I get to civilization for some alka seltzer. People here have stuff like almonds for the first time in their lives. Like the most basic food stuffs you can imagine – in some villages even peanut butter!!!, I sh*t you not! – are science fiction for Chadians. They go to the mosque 5 times a day (at least the 99% Muslim population in Farchana), eat, sleep and pro-create. That is all.

            b. Have a report to write-up from my useless coordination meeting which took place on Thursday! Otherwise yes, just biding my time.

                @Grey: Grey!

I am not joking when I say that’s not a bad idea! Seriously, in Ghana freshly prepared peanut butter could be had at the market for like 1$ for 2 pounds which is like super cheap and can last 2 weeks depending on how much of it you eat.

On the other hand, in places like Chad where the standard of living is really high – that is, the most banal things are really expensive – like 1$ for an apple (one normal apple) or 1$ for an orange!!! or even 1$ for 1 pound of bananas. Bananas!! in Africa!! But that’s the problem with Chad. So we could sell 2 pounds of peanut butter for like 10$ easy! We just need to find someone who’d buy it but then again the eternal problem. Most people live off 60$ a month or less so getting them to cough up 10$ is probably not an option.

                Anyway, what were we discussing?

                Cheers,

So amidst all of this Franco love, I just received the following keeper league offer:

My Maikel Franco ($11) for his David Dahl ($10).

12 team, keep 7 forever roto (5 OF, MI, CI, 2 C), +$3 inflation per year.

My other keepers are Rizzo, Betts, Kershaw, Story, Khris, Moncada.

I’m leaning Dahl, expecting Charlie Blackmon 2-hole type production, but more of a .270 average. What do you think?

Lyrically it’s dope, but I love all BCC. Did think the Sean P verse sounded weird. Like his voice was off.

Both records are great but I like the Sick Jacken album more. That’s a hard AF album. Good finds though.

Very solid lyrically too. Definitely a different feel than the Sick Jacken, but they are both awesome in their own way…agree on Sean P’s verse, sounds like he was at the end of his rope. Love the Shabaam Shadeeq and Buckshot appearances too. The bass line on the one with Buckshot is insane.

Benintendi, Bregman, Miller, Maikel, though don’t really know what 9th round means if I don’t know number of teams

Yeah, the ones I picked look right, but it’s early obviously

Someone made me an offer. I can get Zach Britton if I give up Edwin Diaz and Kolby Allard. Would you make that deal?

    • Grey

      Sounds decent

      • Scott Kimmel says:

it may sound decent but would you make that deal with my bullpen that consists of: Wade Davis, Sam Dyson, and Edwin Diaz, Jenrys Familia, and Madson.

Grey: another offer is coming down the pike. i’ll do that deal

              Grey,

Would you keep Familia or trade him with Allard for Britton

                (link)

which is a better offer for Britton

                Diaz and Allard
                or Familia and Allard

I’m trying to see if he will ofer someone else with Britton like Clint Frazier if I offered Familia and Allard

    Hey Grey,

I like Franco too, am hoping him and Odubel Herrera form a decent partnership….

What’s the likely value of Hary Sanchez? Been fielding lots of offers in a dynasty. Most recent one receive : Lester, Alford (MiLB) give Sanchez, Junior Guerra and Ryon Healy.

12 teams H2H, my roster also includes Realmuto and Kyle Seager.

    Thanks,

    Dan

You mean Gary Sanchez? I’d hold him in that deal, but it’s fair

    Hey Grey

Thoughts on this move I made in a keep forever dynasty league? Dealt Wainwright, Lynn and Jomar Reyes for Franco. Too much?

another fine post as always, Grey/Razzball. I’m a believer in Franco, and PHI being a team on the up-and-up, Pete MacKanin is a great motivator.

Think you could spare sometime to help a tough 16 team / 7 keeper conundrum for me?
    Specs: 7 keepers (increasing +1 yearly -> 8 in ’18, 9 in ’19)
    no keeper contracts/restrictions
    25 man roster, no roster restrictions (C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, 3xOF, DH, UTIL – 10xP, Bench)
    10×10 H2H Most Cats.

Eligibles: (based IMO & from Early-Ranks that I’ve seen)
    C/OF WContreras
    2B/3B/SS JBaez
(2B)/3B/SS JVillar (will likely gain 2B early in ’17)
    3B Arenado & 3B Donaldson
OF BHarper, OF GSpringer, OF JDMartinez, OF ABenintendi
SP CKershaw, SP JUrias, SP CKluber

@Steve: You should go to my newest post next time, just seeing this…. I’d hold Harper, but it’s fair

  16. Steve says:

*forgot to add this, but would you consider dealing Harper for Correa w/ that stacked OF? JDM/Springer would fill-in nicely (would deal Donaldson). Big believer in Correa, less-so in Baez/Villar (esp. considering they’ll likely lose SS elig. after ’17)

3 years of Sale for 5 (probably 7 with options) of Polanco and six of Moncada?

    Dynasty league real contracts

Hi again Grey. Great piece on Franco and great timing for me. I have a offer involving him. 16 team dynasty keeping 6. my Currant keeps are:
    Freeman
    Bryant
    Yelich
    Polanco
    Abreu
    Posey

I have a offer on the table. Abreu and a late round pick for Franco and a 4th round pick. Do I take this deal and put Bryant in the OF? I have no early picks if it helps.

    Thanks alot,

    Ryan

@Grey: Took it. Thanks. Now i need to find a good #1SP. Are you still high on Polanco as you were last year? I think in your newest mock, you were still high on him?

        thanks ryan
