Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

I remember reading the Cliff Notes for Gustave Flaubert’s masterpiece and thinking, “From the moment Cliff Notes was invented, no one has actually read a classic novel.  Therefore, ergo, henceforth, vis-a-vis, if I wrote a Cliff Notes book about a book that doesn’t exist, I could invent a classic novel.  I will call it ‘Uncle Fritter’ and have it take place during the 1908 World’s Fair.”  These are the thoughts of someone who will one day run a fantasy baseball blog.  Matt Dominguez is owned in 26% of ESPN leagues, which is absurd.  Absurd, I tell ya!  He has 19 homers and a .240 average.  Look at Pablo Sandoval’s stats, okay, now look at Dominguez’s — now look at Sandoval — now Dominguez — Sandoval — Dominguez — dizzy yet?  Look at Gyorko’s ownership (86%) and his stats vs. Dominguez.  Since we’re all about the here and now at the end of the season, it doesn’t really matter what Dominguez has done previously.  It’s about what he has done most recently — he has 4 homers in the last ten games and is hitting over .300 in the last week.  If you’re struggling for power, I’d absolutely grab him.  Anyway, here’s some more players to buy or sell this week in fantasy baseball:

Psyche!  Before we get into the Buy/Sell, just wanted to give you what might be the last reminder for our fantasy football leagues.  Go join, otherwise the evildoers win.  Anyway II, the Buy/Sell:

BUY

Carlos Ruiz – Do you think on his bathroom ceiling he has a painting of him touching Charlie Manuel’s finger that he calls, The Choochtine Chapel?  Yeah, prolly.

Chris Carter – I once made the mistake of allowing the Hitter-Tron to fix me up on a date.  I ended up covered in motor oil at a junkyard.  I was fortunate to allow the Hitter-Tron to fix me up with Carter this week.

Dustin Ackley – You saying to your wench server at a Medieval Times restaurant, “Bring me the hottest schmotato in all the land!”  The wench server will bring you out Ackley.

Brad Miller – Why do I keep mentioning him?  Because absolutely no one is picking him up.  On our 30-day Player Rater, Miller is above such guys as Kipnis (who I told you to sell six weeks ago), Altuve, Utley, Daniel Murphy and Pete Lugganio.  Okay, I made up the last name, but the others are true.

Scooter Gennett – I just went over my Scooter Gennett fantasy.  I wrote it while taking out the garbage, which is code for going to the bathroom.

Zack Cozart – I was a bit hesitant to list Cozart, because he seems to get cold almost as soon as he gets hot.  He has a 3-for-5 game followed by an 0-for-4.  If you look at his splits, he hasn’t had one month over .300, which shows a player that never gets hot for an extended period of time.  With that said, grab him now but be ready to drop him.

Will Middlebrooks – When he returned from the minors, it was like he never left if he never had to leave because he was hitting so well (I swear to God, that made sense in my head), but recently Middlebrooks has struggled again.  I’m guessing that has more to do with tough pitching matchups, then him falling back into his previous habits from before he went to the minors in the real scenario when he wasn’t hitting vs. the fake scenario where he was hitting (again, total sense).

Eric Chavez – Did you know to gather crops in Spanish is ‘to havez it’?  Totally true.  Chavez has been good in a platoon role, which is how you should also use him, if you’re havez’ing stats.

Tyler Clippard – Davey Johnson said Clippard might see some 9th inning time if Soriano blows more saves, which I think is mostly hot air because Davey Johnson is about 97 years old and just looking for something to talk about to take his mind off the Grim Reaper that looks like it’s lurking behind his photo.

J.J. Putz – The real Putz recently has been Ziegler and I could see Kirk Gibson announcing that Putz is the new closer as soon as he returns.  Gibson will be pumping his fist when he makes that announcement.

Danny Duffy – For starter pick ups, I’d go almost exclusively by the Stream-o-Nator.  I like some of these starters to varying degrees for the rest of the season, but if they get a bad match-up, they’re not really worth owning.  I like Niese, Martin Perez and Oberholtzer exactly the same in redraft leagues if they have a good matchup.  I dislike Latos as much as Ohlendorf if Latos has a bad matchup.

Taijuan Walker – Just went over my Taijuan Walker fantasy.  It’s the article I’m going to submit for my Webbie Award…Well, either that or our glossary definition for shizz.

Marco Estrada – Rudy just gave you a Marco Estrada fantasy.  He wrote it just before I passed him in our RCL.  A’la Will Smith a’la Muhammad Ali, “The champ is here!”

Matt den Dekker – I just mentioned him this morning.  I bet you can find what I said if you try real hard.

Dayan Viciedo – Surprising to see him hold onto his fantasy value without hitting a homer every day, but he still is hitting over .350 in the last week, and power should follow.

Adam Eaton – Did you hear about the fantasy baseballer who had Eaton ‘n Hoes?  He imagined it was Mike Trout.  I have no idea what that means.

Reymond Fuentes – Here’s what I said the other day about Fuentes, “Was called up by the Padres to play center field (or at least platoon in center).  I searched the site for Fuentes and I came back with a lot of “Oh God, why did I pick up Brian Fuentes again?” lamentations (Possibly Made Up Word of the Day!).  Fuentes has speed (40+ steals over a season) and very light power.  It’s kinda like Apple released their Maybin upgrade, iSAGNOF.  I grabbed him in one league where I’m desperate for a spark of any sort.  Padre hitters usually last about three to four hours on my teams so we’ll see if I even have him by tomorrow.  (Note written two hours later:  I’ve already dropped him.)”  And that’s me quoting me!

Gerardo Parra – Probably the safest option in the outfield buys this week, but also the boringest.  Yeah, that’s a word.

Avisail Garcia – The fruits of Mrs. Garcia’s labor in the backseat of a rental car twenty-two years ago are finally coming to fruition.  If only his brother, Hertzail, could get his life on track.

Denard Span – Hitting near .400 in the last week and has a homer.  Where the speed is for this guy, I have no idea.  He has 11 steals in 17 attempts.  That’s ugly.

Jarrod Dyson – “I am Rajai, and I am your King of SAGNOF.  The Royal Court of SAGNOF is now in order!  First bit of business is polishing the royal crown.  No, Bonifacio, you cannot volunteer Pierzynski because he knows how to Polish everything up.  What’s that, Dyson, you know of a good jewelry polisher?  Okay, here is the crown, but be careful with it.”  Dyson steps outside of the Royal Court of SAGNOF with the crown and sees a mirror.  With no one around, he turns towards the mirror and slowly dons the crown.  WHOOSH!  The winds blows the shutters closed and the candle flames extinguish.  The only light in the room is a fluttering green Regression Fairy, “That crown looks good on you, Dyson.”  Man, I gotta lay off the Nyquil in the daytime.

SELL

Jose Altuve – It was a record-breaking season for Altuve when he beat the all-time record for most steps needed to go from first to second base, but other than that it hasn’t been a great year.  He’s averaging around one homer and five steals per month.  If you can replace that off waivers, I would.

Anthony Rizzo – In deeper leagues, I’m holding him tightly to try and reassure him that everything is going to be okay.  In shallower leagues, I’m holding him close to distract him as I motion behind his back for other corner men to come onto my fantasy team.

Jimmy Rollins – It was a disgrace the way the Phils disposed of their longtime manager, Charlie Manuel, just because he’d chew straw, walk around in overalls with no long johns and mutter nonsense.  Charlie Manuel had loyalty to players that were way past their expiration date, saying, “There’s still some fight in that schnauzer even if it needs me to fashion a diaper out of my Field & Stream magazine cover so it doesn’t soil the floor.”  Ryne Sandberg has no loyalty and, worse, he’s trying to put his own stamp on things and sitting Rollins twice a week.  With a month left, I have no patience to see if Rollins’s playing time shakes out like Charlie Manuel’s schnauzer and I dropped him.

    Hello Grey,

With Mauer on DL, I picked up WIlson Ramos.
Salvador Perez and Carlos Ruiz are available? Should I make a change? I think i Prefer Perez who is on a hot streak.

Also, when Mauer returns, I will have to drop my latest add in Catcher or Michael Bourn who is struggling. This player will be my bench and/or mixed in Utility. Do you have a recommendation on how to proceed or should I wait for Maeur to come back first and then make a desition.

    Thanks for your comments.

@Grey: I have Jennings, Willingham, and Khris Davis as candidates i can drop for Moss. Who goes? And do i still make the move if i only have 8 left and playoffs start in two weeks? Only reason im saving some moves is if i have to stream a couple pitchers or injury.

I am currently sitting at 4.5 out of 12 in my Roto league for saves. I have Hawkins and Zieglar, should I drop both of these guys for middle relievers with good K potential or go get Clippard and save the other?
    Thanks!

P.S. my other 2 closers are Benoit and Jansen.

      • Casey says:

Hawkins and Zieglar are terrible and blow up my era/whip. If i’m not goning to catch anyone in saves, whats the use for them? Couldn’t you go relievers who will get me K’s and clean innings?

They only go in now for the show, everyone in the store is extras, the producers set up what comes in and they’re schooled on it before hand… I mean, it’s all obvious, but to hear the store people say it… Also, Cougs tried to buy something and most of the items are not for sale on the walls due to TV show continuity… So when he’s like “It could look good in my store but I can’t resell it” that might’ve been true at one point, but felt less true after being there…

              • Jack Full O' Hate says:
                (link)

@Grey: I read up on Rick and what a tool, he had been trying to get on TV for years. The show is just a museum where people sell things that go on display and nothing more. I figured most was staged, but if that’s the case then why do they have Chumlee on the show? He is my least favorite reality personality ever. If I came across him and I was drunk, I would probably take a swing on principle alone…probably wouldn’t have to be drunk.

I look forward to the report Chum is bankrupt, a year after the show is off the air… Chum is the kid’s high school friend, has been there for a while, I gather… There’s gotta be a foundation that the show was built on, I’m sure at one point they were a successful pawn store, now they are a front for a TV show… Which is fine, I ain’t hatin’, show is still entertaining…

I’ve seen an awful lot of chatter about the ECFBL and it’s number of transactions. Mike and Rudy appear to be discussing the topic. I don’t think it’s a coincidence ECFBL has the highest transaction count and highest league CI. Just throwing that out there.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Doubt it’s a coincidence… More activity, better the teams because hot hands are snatched up quickly…

    • It’s an interesting topic that I’d like to cover in an offseason post.

Based on the last two years’ in RCL, I’m a definite believer in streaming hitters and/or pitchers to address team weaknesses. Last year, my pitching was hit w/ injuries. This year it was my hitting. For those ‘open’ roster spots, it is better to play matchups than clog the roster spot with a mediocre player. It’s also best to cycle in MRs when possible to exploit RCL using a GS cap vs. an IP cap.

In past years (Grey could attest), I found the RCL format frustrating b/c 1) I just never seem to be the first guy to get, say, the newly anointed closer or hot shmatato and 2) the deep FA pool gave opponents the chance to nullify any drafting advantage I had. But now I could give 2 shits about #1 (helps when you have good luck on your drafted closers :)) and I feel like I can gain an advantage with FA.

I think ECFBL does really well not because of the quantity of transactions but because there are so many active owners. More active owners = more AB and more IP. More AB and IP mean better performance in 6 of the 7 counting metrics (SVs are anomalous). More active owners also equals better Pitching staff management which should help ERA/WHIP in two ways: 1) Sitting SPs in bad matchups and 2) Greater user of MRs.

      • OaktownSteve says:
        (link)

        @Rudy Gamble:

Glad to see you on the stream train, Gamble. I don’t think you can really make an argument against it in this format. Only question is how much.

Similarly, I think there’s no doubt that a roster construction that includes at least 7 relievers (closers, set ups, whomever is pitching well) is the optimal roster construction. It’s probably around 7.3 RPs per day on average over the course of a season.

        • @OaktownSteve: I don’t know about 7 relievers. I think you can accomplish the same purpose (max K’s, ERA/WHIP) mgmt with 4-5 SPs and 5 relievers. I had a solid core of 5 relievers (Chapman, Reed, Street, Jansen, K-Rob) and traded one for a bat and used the slot for streaming SPs (and eventually just kept Gee). It all depends on the health/makeup of your offense and mine was brutal. I’ve used 1-2 bench slots to sit guys during off-days or against bad matchups.

How about a more general statement that the 3 bench spots should be used to maximize AB/IP with a skew towards hitting/pitching based on your team’s strengths/weaknesses?

          • OaktownSteve says:
            (link)

            @Rudy Gamble:

Having given it considerable thought, I’m still pretty sure it’s 7 relievers. The main reason is that if you carry 5 starters, you are guaranteed to have some where from zero to five unused roster spots everyday. The average is probably really close to four dead spots. If you carry two starters, you can roll 8 relievers, have two bench spots dedicated to relievers and have an extra player. If you make one of the relievers a flex so you toggle between player/pitcher, you’re at about 7.something per day on average and you’re still filling your offense.

This year I’ve only carried 2 starters (and currently none), Harvey and Gio, and I’ve got 8.55 K/9 as a team, 1255 IP in only 138 starts, a 3.148 ERA and a 1.117 WHIP. The extra relievers are gold.

I think the economic dictate you want to squeeze every last drop out o the orange. Of course game theory dictates that the more people who use the same strategy the less effective it becomes so there is a balance to be struck.

            • Jack Full of Hate says:
              (link)

@OaktownSteve: but then if every starts to zig the same way then you shift over and grab a great staff from their droppings. I think either way it works. The number one most important thing I have learned about fantasy is that you are playing against someone else. it doesn’t matter if your team looks better on paper and you have all the right averages, if the other guy plays everyday and finds a way to better you without all the baggage attached then you lose.

I use to play in a 6×6 with QS as a cat, it was cool at first but when people started punting saves, I was the first, it worked because I would win K’s, Wins, and QS. What the others failed to notice is it was a 14 teamer so it worked when only a few people did it. Word is that half the league does it because it worked for me 3 years and that must be the winning strategy *sarcasm* Now you have 4 teams in that league with all the closers and they have much better ERA and WHIP than the others

              • @Jack Full of Hate: Valid points. Does your league have an IP or GS cap? B/c if it did, that would neutralize the strategy, no?

                • Jack Full of Hate says:
                  (link)

@Rudy Gamble: the old league had an innings cap, Yahoo, It only really worked because there were 14 points per cat and the smart save punters would grab a closer or two post ASB to get points great points when the others would refuse to have anything to do with closers. It’s a very close minded group, no pun intended.

I alway say you have to play to your league as much as the stats

              • OaktownSteve says:
                (link)

                @Jack Full of Hate:

I think the reliever play is still better for the following reason. After starters 2 or 3 depending upon how well you’ve drafted or picked up, you’re really not improving upon replacement RCL stream level but you are sacrificing the opportunity to improve your innings count, K rate, ERA and WHiP

                • OaktownSteve says:
                  (link)

                  @OaktownSteve:

And that’s true even if you are arbitraging the fact that few teams are holding starters. There is a big gap between the few elite starters, who will always be owned, and everybody else.

@OaktownSteve: I took your advice and ran Mad max and Apricot Jelly out for the last 6-7 weeks with great returns, sometimes I gfot burned in a stream chasing a W, but all in all I’m out of 11th place and in 5th with a chance to finish 4th after my draft day offensive meltdown, I thought I was drafting in 2010

                  • OaktownSteve says:
                    (link)

                    @Jack Full of Hate:

I only drafted Gio because my daughter asked me to. Still top 5% overall RCL pitching staffs I would imagine and with a chance to break the all time K mark.

What I realized too late is that I needed to be more aggressive on the offensive side. I had a horrible, horrible draft. Headley, Alcides, Willingham, Altuve, Utley, LaRoche, LoCain. I am bad with offense. But since I started streaming I got my shizz together a little. I’m about 50/50 to win my league and a decent bet to finish top 20 again.

                    • Jack Full of Hate says:
                      (link)

@OaktownSteve: I drafted Panda, BJ, Alcides, Giancarlo and I threw my buddy a first year RCL bone and let him take Goldy and i took Gonzo. I’m such a softy.

            • @OaktownSteve: Yes, agreed that the more teams that use this theory, the tougher it is to find quality relievers. There’s also additional risk, in my opinion. to relying on streaming SPs for the majority of your starts. Your stat line looks great but it certainly helps you drafted Matt Harvey (http://games.espn.go.com/flb/clubhouse?leagueId=9763&teamId=9&seasonId=2013).

I did start the year w/ 4 SP and 7-8 relievers (the 5 mentioned + some combo of Boggs, Marmol, and Al-Al). But shifted when Masterson fell into my lap via FA and my lower-tier relievers sucked it. And then i had Braun-gate…

              • OaktownSteve says:
                (link)

                @Rudy Gamble:

It helps that I drafted Harvey but if you are carrying two starters, presumably one of them should be of elite status. And there are any number of other starters I might have held this well who would have been as valuable or more valuable than Harvey. My sense is that if you run the numbers, as I said to Jack above, that the gap between SP3-5 and replacement is not enough to overcome the lost opportunity cost of having those spots filled. What’s more, it’s much more consistent in that even in the most active RCL league and even if every team is attempting this strategy, there will still be relievers who lower your rates, up your IPs and K rate and add additional wins.

                • @OaktownSteve: I haven’t run the numbers (would have to use teams like yourself as case studies for heavy reliever + steamer use) but I see the point. i think you’re underestimating that you cannot just replace the 170 IP of 2.27/0.93 you got from Harvey http://games.espn.go.com/flb/activestats?leagueId=9763&teamId=9). If you fail to draft an ‘elite’ pitcher (say you drafted Verlander for it), I think all the relievers in the world will be lucky to get you to 12 points total in ERA/WHIP. The strategy, though, does optimize for W/K/SV and doesn’t hog your 3 bench slots in case you need them for platooning hitters.

Net-net, I wouldn’t draft around this strategy but could see moving to it if my SP3/SP4 got hurt or shit the bed like in 2012 and I didn’t think any FA pickups were worth holding onto.

      • MattTruss223 says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble: Agreed 100% Rudy, it’s all about maximizing those counting stats. No empty roster spots on short schedule days, and streaming good match-ups instead of holding say, Josh Reddick for 3 months.

I could see how it might be frustrating for some. It’s a grind to stay on top of it all year long, every single day. But, that’s the exact reason most of us find it so fun.

You comments on the drafting advantage are spot on as well. ECFBL may as well only draft for the first 15 rounds or so, everything after that is just waiting to get dropped. Because teams in ECFBL hoard MRs, that newly anointed closer is rarely available on the wire anyway, if they are any good, they are rostered.

I also think # of transactions is a direct relationship to an active owner. Maybe not necessarily 1300 moves, but most teams in that league are right around 200 or so. Teams are also very quick to cut bait with guys, I bet it’s the first league where CC Sabathia for instance hit the waiver wire.

I look forward to that future post Rudy. If the RCLs ever move to Yahoo! A lot of this strategy will be thrown out the window anyway. I really like the format though, and the roster size. Y! default is sooooo shallow, it bugs me.

        • @MattTruss223: if we ever move to yahoo, we’d use the same roster format we use for RCL. position eligibility can’t be changed and not sure whether they have GS caps.

Pianowski @ Yahoo was the first guy I remember saying that you have to churn the bottom 1/3 of your roster in shallow leagues. So true.

I think every draft pick is valuable – it’s just this mindset might change 1) whom you pick and 2) how quickly you drop them. I got Kenley in round 15, De Aza in 17th, Chris Carter in 18th, Derek Holland in 19th, and K-Rob in 23rd. Took a solid flier (I think) on Corey Hart in the 16th – great flex pick (1B/OF) if he’s back on May 1st as what was expected. My worst move was probably hanging onto late pick Denard Span for 200 ABs instead of cutting bait after April.

@Rudy Gamble: RE: saves. I have accumulated 101 to date. Only 23 from drafted RP (Perkins/Betancourt/Janssen, rounds 11/12/13). Picked up the likes of Mujica (30), Henderson (10 before trading him), Farquhar (10), Hawkins (6)…at least 1 save from 15 different CL/MR.

Mujica/Henderson/Farquhar/Hawkins from tight ERA/WHIP periphs over their previous 15 to 30 days. Notice, I grabbed Farquhar from improving performance, ignoring early season woes.

in total, counting stats from 88 CL/MR (with numerous others rostered and dropped without counting for me).

I have 1523 IP, the next closest 1357 in our league (some of that excess due to having already streamed 179 GS, but a lot due to keeping those 9 pitching slots filled on a daily basis!)

re my 1300+moves: number of moves not a direct relationship to good results. quality moves count more than just moves. my excessive count some from my process: i grab the best guy available, see another, then grab him. put in waivers but don’t wait for them. grab FAs first, in case someone else might get the waiver. also, i rotate out many MRs daily, if they pitched a multiple innings recently, and move in fresh guys.

            cust kayin’

            • @simply fred: I think you did the best that you could with the pitching staff given you didn’t draft a single starter. Maxing IP with relievers gives you a shot to complete in W/K and helpsi ERA/WHIP (assuming decent reliever luck). But my biggest concern w/ extreme SP stream dependency is that you’re sacrificing something (otherwise these SPs would be owned). Your team’s K/IP is by far the worst in your division and W/GS is weak as well. Still could’ve won with some more pitching luck + a LOT more hitting luck (it was like every hitter you drafted in your first 10 rounds underperformed).

So do you think you’ll draft any SPs next year or stick w/ this strategy? I still think I’m going with the 4 SP/6-7 RP strategy.

What does the trade of Morse do to his value? That park is conducive to his power.

I can’t carry Starlin Castro anymore. He’s been holding a gun to my fantasy roster all season long; drafted him just about right on his ADP and it was too difficult to just kick that kind of investment to the curb. I finally moved into the #1 spot this year but that’s far from secure – I’m 1.5 games up on the guy in my division that I knocked off but this week he’s winning his match up big and I’m losing mine and going into next week (end of the regular season for us at least) I’m gonna be going against the team that had held the #2 seed pretty much all season long. Long story short, I can’t keep carrying that kind of garbage on my roster. My best three options are Miller, Scooter, and Cozart. Which one is my best option in a 6×6 H2H league (H, HR, R, RBI, SB and BB being the hitter’s cats)?

I don’t think too much, really.

I’d guess he’d spell Ludwick in LF from time to time and either Choo/Bruce with tough lefties.

He may be what Jarrod Dyson was before he started getting regular playing time, which was spare at bats, primarily pinch running.

I took your advice and benched teheran. Or at least I thought I did. I checked my team after the first game had played for the week (so the rosters were set) and there was jo-fer on the bench, and Teheran active!

I must not have clicked “save changes” or something.

It ended up being a fortuitous mistake…………

I’m thinking of going all out for steals in the last month to make a final push for counting stats in that category.
Would you drop cespedes and a closer for billy Hamilton and jarrod dyson?

I’m locked in for at least 7 points out of 10 in saves, so i can afford to lose a guy like melancon. and cespedes has just been awful for a while now. He also doesn’t steal.

    • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
      (link)

@gareth: those would be the best steals guys, when hamilton comes up.

    • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
      (link)

@gareth: i own rajai in 10 teamer as a steals only guy (but he does hit well this year). After Grey advised me to drop him for Dyson I went and looked up the playoff schedules (yahoo’s 3 playoff weeks starting on sep 9th) for
      1. dyson/boneface week 1 only against DET/CLE. very good steals spot in first week of playoffs
The other 2 weeks have mostly TEX and SEA, only mediocre steals opps here. WSOX are in there too, they are good steals matchup
      2. rajai – Raj plays both a good team to get steals off in each week (LAA,BOS,TB) but also bad ones, BAL (twice) and NYY. With him you should get half of all 3 weeks good for steals. And of course Raj’s overall production is the best of these guys.
      3. EYJ week one gets 4 games vs the great for steals WAS team, but also the bad for steals MIA. Week 2 gets great (PHI) and medium (SF). Week 3 gets the great (MIL) and bad (CIN).

A GOOD PLAN thus would be Sept 9-18 either dyson or boneface (both?, remember to bench dyson against lefties), (or EYJ Sept 9-12th), (or Raj Sept 10-12th), then week 2 would go dyson/boneface (16-18th), then 1 of EYJ (20-22nd) or Raj (20-23rd) have good matchups.
week three all three sets have 4 good days, but only raj is good on the first day (23rd). Sept 26-29th are matchups for both EYJ and Dyson/Boneface. I mention those 4 people since I can get or own already all of them.

    • Grey

      Grey says:

There’s no guarantee Hamilton even plays, I wouldn’t do that with Cespedes… Melancon for Dyson sounds fine if no one else can pick up saves and pass you…

He’s throwing Ross, Haren and Nicasio still this week (pending any add/drops). I have Cobb, Wood, Kendrick and Cashner that I can throw. Go ahead and start all 4 of my guys, right?

to lock up a bye week ,

        (link)

@Grey: that’s why the commissioner added losses as a cat, to keep someone from freerolling more cats (wins/K’s) than they could be losing (era/whip at most); to make it more risky to add people like capuano. I’d start all of them too, but with capuano/kendrick i wouldn’t be completely sure your era lead is insurmountable.

    Hi Grey,
Great advise you have given me all year and currently in a strong 2nd place headed into play offs, my team & 1st place team will hold the bye in Yahoo the first week. A lil advice, for a night of long, tall daqueri’s?
Yahoo Keeper league- 2 players( this past year my keepers were Cespedes in 9th round & Trout in 10th) Each year keepers drop 2 rounds allowing you to keep 5 years in Trout’s case.
    Here is my team
    c- Rosario
    1b- C Johnson
    2b- Utley
    3b- M. Carpenter
    ss- Villar
    lf- Upton
    Cf- Trout
    Rf- Myers
    OF- Cespedes & R. Davis
    DL- Starling Marte
Pitchers- kuroda, Sabithia, Nova, Halladay, J. Weaver, Walker, S. Gray, & T. Walker
    Relievers- papelbon, Holland & Melacon

Ist Question- To strengthen for Playoffs following oon waiver now and I am ready to move…
B Hamilton- Do i drop Villar for him or drop a different player and keep both?
Also Scooter is available, should I add him instead or both of them and drop another and if so who? Also I am very intrigued about Danny Duffy? if I picked him up who would I drop? I had Cigniani til he went down and & I def had a bromance with him. Also I saw you mention Putz, and I lost Brothers in a drop and snatch so could use one more in saves help…What to do what to do?
Quick acting league so i’d like to get ahead and be ready…I can go .500 or at even a little less and still coast into playoffs….So would you mind helping a brother out? I know I knwo so many questions in one…but after all you are the “Oracle of all that is Gray”! Thanks friend!

I’m only at 137 starts so figure I need to get a bit of a move on so as to have options over the last week or so of the season (especially as I’m on vacay).

    10 teamer, if dom brown is hurt again, i don’t have room on DL and with playoffs starting on the 9th, i’d really rather have somebody who produces right now anyway. When Myers was performing he was benched anyway. this team has 4 of these guys benched every day anyway;
myers/gennett (backup to miller and hill)/a-jax/dom/choo (lefty days)/raj (will become dyson or boneface by the 9th). So the replacement will more than likely be a homer guy, as i don’t need runs, 1 out of
    aramis/dominguez/gyorko/wallace/ackley.

    (link)

Ok Grey, you been money for me this year and I thank you…I don’t win big this coming week, I don’t go to the playoffs. I have 4 moves left. I’m willing to use all (if I don’t get in, they don’t matter, eh?) but would be nice to leave one. I’m thinking-Domingez for Sandoval (though he is heating up a bit), Avisail Garcia for Khris Davis (I think his run is over) and Danny Duffy for well, the already-dropped Zach McAllister. Here’s my lineup, thoughts? 14 team h-h Y league. I’m in 5th.

    C-Rosario
    1b-Ortiz
    2b-Bonafacio
    SS-Tulo
    3b-Sandoval
    OF1-AJones
    OF2-ARios
    OF3-HPence
    UTIL-Hosmer
    BN-KDavis

    P1 Bumgarner
    P2 INova
    P3 WMiley
    P4 TWalker
    P5 CArcher
    P6 JParker
    P7 JKelly
    RP Farquhar
    RP Casey Janssen Tor
    RP A CHapman
    DL Grilli

Would you make those 3 moves, and would you use a 4th on anyone? Available: Springer, Castellanos, SPerez, Shuck, Pagan, Hoes, Eaton, Gyorko, Viciedo, and P’s Cashner, Duffy, Guthrie, Feldman, CMorton, RDelgado, ERamirez. Thinking Shuck or Pagan as I’m always 1 to 2 runs short every week!

NEVER seem to get enough wins….good in saves, WHip, HRs (except this week!!), RBI, SB. So-so in runs, era. kinda givin’ up on Avg and don’t want to improve wins at expense of WHIP….sigh…long message, but thanks if you can get to it! I will have to make moves Monday, so will miss Duffy’s first start, if that matters. THANKS!

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I’d hold Sandoval and switch Davis with Avisail… I’d lose Kelly for a solid two start pitcher…

      • Greg says:
        (link)

@Grey: I can’t do any two starts, sadly, because my weekly moves are used up….well, wait…are there any pitchers going on Tuesday who are 2 starts?

How would you rate my team in 14team h-h? Hope you make your playoffs….dang, that would be embarrassing if you didn’t, huh? :) Such a fickle game we play…

          • Greg says:
            (link)

@Grey: cool. The reason I’m not is….they all slumped at the same time….Tulo’s 6 weeks out really hurt, too….well, judging by today, maybe they’ll all get hot at the same time.

Kelly was solid again today, on the road, but you also feel the regression is coming, I take it? Seems to be the prevailing opinion….

The playoffs in YOUR leagues…uh, or were you saying, “what playoffs, I didn’t make it?”

Thanks for your help all year, man….

sweeney’s back, i had him for all of 1 at bat back in june for rbi’s right when he got hurt. Is he a better option than parra or should i wait to see for a bit first. It feels weird to end a week with a pickup left (often screw myself from using these too early, read gray, puig etc), may be the first time since may i’ve done this.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Wait to see what he does first…

      • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
        (link)

@Grey: it’d be cool if all prospects were brought up tue or wed, then i’d beat everyone in my league to them, while i still had pickups in the 5 pickup 16 teamer. of course then gausman would’ve screwed me.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

Yeah, but in redraft leagues you don’t need them unless they’re hitting…

          • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
            (link)

@Grey: I could always drop them later, if not producing, oftentimes when they were called up later in week (puig, gray) i didn’t have choice as i was already out of pickups. Those were snatched up and gone forever. Eric chavez (even though he’s great against righties) has now only started 3 out of 7 days; it looks like due to him having nowhere to play. He needs to learn outfield apparently, or prado could get gilooyied. At least if this continues i’ll have roster space for hamilton (all the good steals guys are gone, even dyson now, and I needed RBI’s more, so i went after chavez instead) if/when he comes up.

They say it attracks a shady crowd, because as we all know when we go buy vape products we are in their with every druggy and gangster imaginable. I even heard they are going to keep them limited and having the local police routinely going in to make sure everything is on the up and up. People have asked me the dumbest questions lately too, I heard those are worse for you? the second hand smoke is worse? and that it’s just a cover to do drugs. But hey, This buds for you!

Nah, I don’t think they’re gonna make it illegal, but they’re gonna put a serious damper on the parade… Wouldn’t be surprised if most of the stores go out of business, and you can’t vape anywhere you can’t smoke…

@Grey: I can live with that, half of the bars I go to still allow smoking so I’m good there. I know a guy that ran a vape business out of his garage for 4 years and I know where the wholesalers are and how to order all device and components direct from Hong Kong

in a 11 team roto i thought i could count on 4 or 5 guys, before yesterday maybe 6 with Haren. Latos (except for STL starts), Stras, Gray; AND Haren (gone), Corbin (not great ROS schedule, will be gone), Wood (will be gone). I gotta fill 240 innings. I added Duffy for his mon or tue start. I’ll be back asking about pitchers for this ugly problem. This team was already bottom of league in era when I inherited it.

@Grey: Goldy has been great, obviously and Cruz in the 9th was pretty sweet (while it lasted), but Cuddyer’s the type of player I often overlook as he doesn’t have much of anything to recommend him…

Could you pick two for ROS? Position availability doesn’t matter and it’s a 12m keeper, just keep 6 though:

    S Castro
    J Gyorko
    S Drew
    N Arenado

    1. Need to drop one: Estrada, Wheeler, Gray or Duffy. Leaning toward Wheeler right now given that he mentioned his fatigue this past week as he approaches his innings limit coupled with potential Mets hesitance to push him given the Harvey loss.

    2. Please pick one for power: Morales, Morse, Viciedo, Joyce, Carter, Moss (I don’t have room for a bench bat, so any platoon guys are staying in my lineup whether or not they actually play that day)

    3. Is Billy Hamilton’s upside potential that much greater than Jarrod Dyson’s that he warrants hanging onto him to see if he actually gets playing time, or should I just grab Dyson, plug him in and call it a day?

    Thanks…

Drop D Jennings for C Crisp at this point? I think Jennings has shown who he is at this point – a 15/30 OF at .250 avg that gets hot for a couple times a year. Not worth much.

that throw will probably keep me from sweeping a guy, unless hawkins gets a save later anyway. eh 12-0-1 in my main league. weird situation. next week i’d be better off throwing it to intentionally not try to get 5th or 4th overall. I will end this week in 5th. The teams in 4th and 6th are better than the team in 3rd, whom I would play in the first round if i throw next week and get 6th on purpose. It would look funny if I were to bench my entire team.

which of these 3 teams would you most want to face if your own team was stronger in pitching and runs than homers and rbi’s? I may have some control over which of these I want to face in the first week of the playoffs (starting the 9th). Thinking throwing next week on purpose (i’m literally locked into getting no worse than 6th, 8 make playoffs) 16 team h2h league, with hits and total bases and losses as extra cats.
    1. castro/craig/seager/alvarez/hanram/pence/hunter/moss/other kris davis/pierz(C)/dominguez/smoak
    P – verlander/iwakuma/shields/oberholtzer/liriano/miller/lee/stults/nolasco/uehera/frieri/delarosa(RP)/tazawa

    2. ramos/votto/phillips/beltre/segura/avisail/ellsbury/prado/c.johnson/crawford
    P – sale/ryu/walker/teheran/gray/garza/m.gonzalez/latos/w.peralta/papelbon/rivera
this is the guy i traded rivera for m.perez and also who beat me to gray (due to being out of pickups, and OAK’s manager less than 3 days before saying it was still Milone’s job) this week, avisail.

    3. rosario/ortiz/uggla/zimmerman/a.ramirez/morrison/jones/trout/willingham/solano/cozart
    P – griffin/rusin/annabelle/c.j.wilson/archer/cosart/dickey/norris/sabathia/danks/hughes/soriano/cishek
    which is weakest team?

    • goodfold2 says:
      (link)

@goodfold2: team 3 appears to sometimes bench some of these terrible pitchers he has (hughes/danks/sabathia) but not all the time. He has enough starters to win wins/K’s but certainly it would be easy for him to lose era/losses/whip against any decent pitching team, including mine.

      • goodfold2 says:

@goodfold2: if a comparison helps, my team is

        P – morton/m.perez/scherzer/bailey/gee/porcello/kluber(DL)/kazmir/cole/erasmo/peavy/
medlen/smyly/lo/hawkins/perkins I’m likely dropping smyly when Kluber comes back (not first start though), later in playoffs can drop someone else when their upcoming starts get bad (or if they take cole out of SP)
