Martin Prado is about to become Kelly Johnson’s platoon-mate. I saw it happen to Johnson last year with Yunel grabbing at-bats and I watched Matt Diaz never get a shot against righties. This is how Bobby Cox do. Bitch and moan all you want that Johnson just has a knee injury. He’s going to sit against the majority of lefties. I can feel it coming. Even though I ranked Johnson high and liked him coming into this season, I’m glad I didn’t reach into the sixth round for him, like I saw some ‘perts do. Anyway, this is what I saw last night.

Jair Jurrjens cruised through five. Ran into some trouble and faced one too many batters. He’s looking like a decent deep league pickup. But let’s not give each other a reach around just yet, he was facing the Pirates.

Speaking of pitchers who dominated weak offenses, Oliver Perez looked like a number one. Perez looked splendiferous. (BTW, no one says or writes splendiferous — gay or straight/male or female. Is there a more useless word in the English language?)

Kendrick scored on wild pitch. How about that Twins and Angels offense? Carlos Gomez tried to bunt five times. All five went foul. Yeah, he could steal fifty. But he needs to get on base.

Was nice to see Matt Diaz hit a home run, but I’d like to see him do it against a righty. Caveat: Cox.

Corey Patterson is not going anywhere. He’s going to be a 15/35/.260 at the end of the year with 500+ at-bats.

Sticking with the Corey theme, Corey Hart stole two bases. I hope he goes for forty.

Jayson Nix hasn’t been done much to impress me thus far. He’s batting eighth and looks lost when he’s at-bat.

Andrew Miller will be good one day. Though I don’t think it’s going to be this year.

Can you guess the pitcher? 6 INN, 6 HA, 3 BBI, 3 K, 3 ER, 4.500 ERA, 1.500 WHIP — I know, you’re thinking Ian Snell pitched two days ago. It’s Gorz, and, I swear, him and Snell have the same line every start.

Hamels looked great, but…. Wait for it… Here it comes… Redding outpitched him.

Krispie Young walked three times. That’s a good sign. But the pitches weren’t close.

Mark Reynolds struckout two more times. He’s at 5 for the year. He’ll get to 200.

Brandon Lyon will be replaced sooner rather than later. Make sure you have Tony Pena.

  1. Gentleman’s bet – I take Cust over Reynolds for K’s this year.

What would the spread be for Cust K’s vs. Jeter hits? I think that’s a call ‘em bet right now, no?

I think Cust would lose playing time or pull a Hernandez and pussy out. Reynolds isn’t going anywhere and he’s all but said strikeouts are a part of his game. I’ll see your gentleman’s bet and raise you a real man.

Jeter outhits Cust’s Ks but falls just short of Reynolds’s.

I got Johnson in the 16th, but do I need to trade him to some chump that doesn’t read Razzball and pick up Aaron Hill? or do I leave Wiggy as my starting 2B?

    Look at this:

    http://razzball.com/top-twenty-2nd-basemen-for-2008/

Johnson just got hyped more than Aaron Hill (which I was guilty of too), but that doesn’t mean Hill’s bad. People just got crazy excited that Johnson might go 15/15, it never meant he was going to. Frankly, if I could get 17 home runs from Hill and threw Velez out there for ten steals here and there, then isn’t that 17/10. Sure, it’s two players instead of one, but there’s off days for teams. If you throw Velez in when there’s an off day for someone else, I think you can get to ten steals.

Though I worry that his stock has dropped and you’ll be selling low, so depends what you can get for him. He was left on the on-deck circle when the Braves lost tonight, so he was about to get in as a pinch hitter. Talk that up.

BTW, I’m not saying you have to unload Johnson, I just know that Cox loves to go with righty/lefty splits and Johnson is a lefty, so you might lose him every time he faces a lefty. But when he’s facing a lefty you can slot in Velez. Depends on how much work you want to do. Last year I platooned Johnson and Yunel to great effect in one league, but it was work switching them out every so often.

Yeah – not a good time to trade him right now (and it would be nice if he actually does something first!). I guess I do have Wiggy, who will play every day (and is 2B eligible in my league), although will probably hurt in AVE and Runs but help in HR and RBI – and he stole a base today!
Just have to monitor the situation – with the help of the mighty Razzball of course!
    Thanks for the input.

Great site, love the dope-bashing on Karabaell & stuff….

    My team:

    5×5 Yahoo H2H 12 team:

    C- Martin
    1B- Fielder
    2B- Kendrick
    3B- Zimm, Kouz
    SS- Tejada
    OF- Victorino
    OF- Vlad
    OF- Rios
    Cuddyer
    Theriot

    SP- Johan
    SP- Penny
    SP- R. Hill
    RP- SOria
    Joba
    Burnett
    J. Shields
    H.Bell
    D. Lowe

I messed up and unintentionally on purpose punted saves……what do I neeed here ? Deal Bourn? Help Grey or Mr. Gamble !!!!!!!

  8. hey dp -
looks like you’ve got great depth everywhere except saves so you’ve got definite strengths to trade from.

There’s no way you could ever start the flyin’ hawaiian (victorino) and bourn at the same time so trading bourn isn’t an awful idea. You’ve also got depth in SP. How many can be used per week? The guys I’d be most looking to trade are Penny and Lowe since they aren’t great K guys. Perhaps Shields could net a closer (i’m concerned he’ll only get around 11 wins)?

The other thing you can do – depending on the # of starters you can throw – is chance it and max out on W and K until a closer appears on the waiver wire (one opened up on Seattle just recently).

    Good luck…

Grey – did you have Kelly active today?

    Me neither…

  10. hey steve -
that sucks. i’ve got kelly johnson in one league and, lucky for me, i have only three bench slots and they’re all quality pitchers. so i’ve been sucking up the no plays for kelly johnson…usually i get fed up with no plays, pick up a sub, and then they hit a grand slam….this is my season!!!!

    Oh, Steve.

I didn’t get Johnson in any league because he went way too high. Also, I try and avoid offensive guys on my bench when at all possible. I have a few MRs and push my SPs to the bench.

Ironically, I had Wiggy at 2B as I didn’t think Johnson would play – and he got hurt too! I’m trying to console myself with the fact that it doeasn’t look like it’s going to make any difference to my match-up this week …

You guys got any thoughts on Keppinger?

  13. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

I got Keppy in my NL-only keeper league. OBP is a stat there so that was why I targeted him, the home runs are a mystery and I can’t imagine he breaks ten on the year. Just one of those first week fluke things, ya know? Could he pull a Roberts that year he hit 20? I doubt it.

  14. Steve says:
    (link)

Yeah – OBP is a stat in my league too. Just wondering if he was worth a pickup while Renteria or Atkins get going (he’s 3B/SS eligible).

Like you say, though, it has only been a week!

In H2H though, you need your boys on fire from the get-go…

  15. Grey

    Grey says:

Yeah, he seems like he’s starting out hot. I see no reason why you can’t grab him if you have room and bench Renteria. I’d leave Atkins in for now.

Who would you drop? My only real options are Franklin Gutierrez, Riske or Speier.

Done. Even if he doesn’t keep up this pace power-wise (and obviously he won’t), there’s always a place for someone who relentlessly gets on base, right?

Can’t go wrong with OBP ever.
