What a turd baby of fantasy baseball advice Karabell laid the other day when he revealed his new rankings. Wasn’t it just a few weeks ago that he ranked Webb number one overall? In his recap of his rankings, he hits upon Edinson Volquez, someone he absolutely believed in a few weeks ago. Naturally, after seeing Volquez pitch superbly for the last few weeks, Karabell is moving Volquez up his rankings, right? Nope, just as Volquez starts to look like he’s the real deal, Karabell bumps him down the list.

After a few weeks, he says Jay Bruce is going to be this year’s Braun. Yes, I realize Jay Bruce is the only known offspring of Superman and Wonder Woman, but Braun’s numbers last year were a once in a lifetime deal. To say a hitter, who majored in striking out in the minors, is going to match Braun is dangerous hyperbole.

Later, when Karabell says he’s totally on board with Josh Hamilton, it scares the beejezus out of me, because I have Hamilton on a few teams where Josh has carried the offense and I need him to keep producing. Why would that giant melonhead jinx Hamilton? Ugh. Don’t worry, we shouldn’t pay too much credence to any of this because he listed Nate McLouth as a possible sell-high guy. That’s right, a week after he said McLouth would win his fictitious Fantasy MVP. Hey, Karabell, go get your shinebox!

Yeah, in my main big-money league Hamilton got chosen in the 12th round because some dude was leaving the draft early and “wanted to make sure he got him”. This was about 8 rounds earlier than Hamilton had been picked on average. To safely make sure I got him I figured I would use a 15th rounder on him. I crunched the numbers and I would be in 3rd place right now if H-dog were on my team, but instead I’m mired in a gross 8th place rut. I guess thats what I get when I draft kings of consitency such as Vlad and Oswalt. Yuck, what a putrid season.

Grey: which would you drop to pick up Parra: Kaz Matsui, Aviles, or Alexei.

Only thing keeping me from dropping Kaz is he helps me with steals.

  6. Zebo says:

@Grey: glad you are back. I am spot starting Jurrjens and Giese today, I may keep them if they don’t suck. 2 weeks ago, I moved Dye for Cano, and I look like an idiot right now. Cano has been unusable, while Dye hit 7 dingers. By the way, I dropped Headley, Morrow and Aviles to get Jurrjens and Giese, and room for Mike Gonzalez. Should I bother to pick those 3 schmoes back or no?

  7. Eephus says:

Karabell: “Victor Martinez, C, Indians: I guess it’s a catcher thing. He’s my No. 48 guy, even though he’s hit nary a home run. So what? Looking ahead, I can see a few six or seven-homer months.”

I like the way Karabell thinks. I picked up Mike Piazza this year too, just in case.

    Grey Almight and the rest…

If you were to, you know, go for the juggular and get the most you could think of for McCann (of the Brian variety), who would you target in a std 5×5 roto league? Why am I stuck on trading McCann?

    My offense is stuck.
I have C. Lee, Damon, Francisco, Ellsbury, Bruce and Pence in the OF…
D-Lee, Fielder, Howard, Branyon at the corners/Util…
Greene, Pedroia, Baker, Theriot, at MI…
    and McCann/Clement at C.

Pitching is fine and I won’t bore you with all of that, but I have trading chips in Gonzalez and Torres, not to mention Volquez.

It’s clear that I need an upgrade at MI and 3B of some sort. My needs are most of the offensive categories. Currently, I’m sitting in 3rd place, but only 8 points off the leader and can smell the money. Help.

I realize that I just wrote this in the general comments section, and not in the forum section, but I’ve already gotten this far to stop and cut and paste it over there, so I’m just going to submit it. You’re just going to have to take it like a man/woman.

  10. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@IowaCubs: I don’t think McCann brings you value. But try McCann, Volquez, Gonzalez, Pedroia (or any of your MI guys) and Torres for Reyes or Hanley.

    Or…

Remove McCann and do — Gonzalez, Pedroia (Any MI guy), Torres and Volquez for Kinsler?

Seems like you’re giving up a lot in the first, but McCann is really the only guy that is giving you proven numbers. Volquez is a gamble and the rest of the guys are a joke.

Second trade is one gamble and three jokes.

  11. p0rk burn says:
    (link)

@Grey: Yeah same question that was sitting there neglected in the forums for a few days. I had to drop a player before I could even pick someone up because Mikey G was still DL’d. That used up Alexei. I figured Cook had outlived his usefulness so I cut him loose to pick up Parra (for the next start at least). That brings me back to square one. I need to grab another pitcher to keep my weekly IP in the target range. I’m tempted to play with fire and pick up Banks and his impotent offense.

My expendable players are pretty much limited to Aviles, Kaz, Headley, and Murphy. I want to hang onto Murphy because its a differentiated outfield and his 3-spot is nice to have. Headley is showing me some rookie nookie and Aviles is hot. I think out of the group Kaz is the most likely to survive a trip to the waivers if I really decide I need him back.

Another option is dealing one of my catchers (George or Bengie) to a team with a scrub for a third/fourth tier starter. Thoughts/comments/cuss words?

  12. RT says:

I’ve been away from the fantasy baseball world all day and I come back to Marcum on the DL. WTF? That is Smoltz, Carmona and now Marcum — my first three drafted pitchers. Sigh….

  13. p0rk burn says:
    (link)

@RT: CURSE WORDS!!!! I traded A.Gonzo for Marcum last Friday because I was rich at first and needed a SP. I hope the Blue Jays Management suffers a fate worse than the one I wished on Braun’s legs for being so secretive.

  14. RT says:

    @p0rk burn:

My brother. I am thinking of picking up Josh Banks. There is nothing left to grab.

Anyone want Jay Bruce? Sack of balls? Anyone?

  15. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@p0rk burn: Unless you need Kaz’s steals, I’d drop him.

  16. barring an epoch (epic?) collapse, i am currently entrenched in my fantasy league playoffs so i decided to focus on improving my team with a strategy focused on the playoffs and trying to scrounge currently injured or buy low players for sell high guys…( i have won second place in each of the last three years and i am tired of 1st loser)

so i recently traded bruce and ludwick for mauer and furcal since outfielders are much deeper and i had nothing for catcher or ss…hoping that i would get even remotely close to furcal’s production when he comes back and at least with mauer i wouldn’t have a napoli in there…

i also traded volquez and drew (JD) for pujols

leaving me with a starting lineup of:

    c-mauer
    1-pujols
    2-bj upton
    3-braun
    ss-furcal
    of-hamilton
    of-willingham
    of-berkman
    util-pence/murphy/aviles/tulowitzki/headley

    sp-cain/j. sanchez
    sp-duchscherer/marcum
    rp-ryan
    rp-capps
    p-morrow
    p-gregg

obviously this is not a deep league with only 10 teams and not a whole lot of bench space…one player has to go if nobody is on the DL

i got aviles and tulo as possible insurance for furcal

i was trying to move marcum and (any combo of pence, murphy, headley) for a soriano/beltran type and i also would like to try and acquire figgins (totally stacking my offense) …now that marcum is hurt i can’t do that…i feel confident in being able to pick up serviceable pitching that can at least win me a category or two on that side

what can i do without moving my stud hitters to really make it happen???

  17. BTW…just stumbled upon this site a week or so ago and i really like it…good job

  18. cruisinkc says:
    (link)

What do you predict for Krispie Young the rest of the year? I was just offered him for Victorino. I could use the added power but I hate Young’s BA. Will it come up at all or stay in the .230s?

  19. nick says:
    (link)

My pitching is a mess! Marcum, Big Z, & Wainwright on the DL!!!

What is Wainwrights status ? Should I be looking to pick someone up considering I only have Sabathia & Greinke left…i’m 17.1+ IP so could use the break but will I have a pitcher back soon ?

  20. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@danimal35: Not a huge fan of the Furcal/Mauer trade as Mauer’s strength is runs and average and Furcal’s been pulling a Kotchman. The trade Pujols I think is great for you.

Now I’m not saying Tulo’s going to be as bad as he was, but what if he is? Right now his trade value is the highest it might be if that’s the case. How about moving Tulo, Headley and one of your fringe closers (which you have a lot of)? Or Tulo and Pence? Or Tulo, Pence and Headley? You have too many Utility guys. I’d try and do three for one. The problem is, your three isn’t so good, so your leaguemates may not bite. If you find anyone in your league wants Furcal or Mauer, I’d also consider moving them. I feel like they will cause indigestion.

Hope this helps and thanks for the kind words.

@cruisinkc: Krispie could get up to .250 and I think the worst of his average might be behind him, but he’s not stealing this year thus far and he could only hit another 15 home runs. Victorino could hit 10 and get a lot more steals. I’d pass on this trade.

  21. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@nick: Unfortunately, I’m not holding out much hope on Wainwright this year. You should have Big Z back in two weeks and Marcum a little after that. You should be picking up someone to tide you over.

  22. nick says:
    (link)

So you think Wainwright is done for the year!? Or that he will just never be as good as he has been when he gets back!? My roster is full so I would have to drop him to pickup someone else…and the options are….

    Gavin Floyd
    Todd Wellemeyer
    Kyle Lohse
    Jo-Jo Reyes
probably more but those are the top yahoo ranks+reyes

I’m thinking I should look to make a trade considering I have 5 OF’s…unfortunately OF’s are easily available in an 8 team league so they don’t have to much value but I’m looking to trade Chris Young, Pat Burrell, Jermaine Dye. Any idea of what pitchers I should be looking for in exchange for those guys and/or Wainwright ?

  23. Chet says:
    (link)

Greyster, Why do you not have hope for Wainwright. I hadn’t heard anything that says he’ll be gone that long. The sprained finger will linger?

  24. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@nick: In an 8 team league, those are the best pitchers? I’d go Reyes, Wellemeyer, Floyd, punt. I can’t believe anyone would trade for Wainwright, but I guess you can try. It’s a bit of an underhanded move though cause Wainwright’s damaged goods. Wainwright and Krispie Young might get you Maine or Carmona or Shields. You can try I suppose.

  25. nick says:
    (link)

sorry Carmona was actually just dropped but hes DL’d too so that does no help for me now which is what I’m looking for

  26. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@nick: Carmona may not be back for a few weeks now cause he just had a set back, but he should be able to help you more than Wainwright.

  27. shmetts says:

I receive Rollins for Tejada and Hamels….is Hamels worth the upgrade?

  28. Dim says:

  29. Grey

    @Dim: Keep CJ

  30. cockyphoenix says:

so I’m out of town with a busted transmission, and I’m only worth half the internet I usually am. I’m just noticing Tulo needing to come off the DL. The only options I have are to drop Morrow or Bruce or to keep Tulo inactive for a while and be denied any roster move attempts by Y! I’m about ready to drop Morrow since his back hurts and J.J.’s recovery sounds good, whaddayathink?

    @Grey

Just got offered Atkins, T Hunter and Broxton for Cantu, Nathan, and M Gonz.

I’m 1st in Saves, but 5 guys within 15 of me. Would leave me with K Rod and Franklin as closers, we don’t count holds. I like Atkins but what’s your take on Hunter? And do I take the hit in saves?

  32. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@BigFatHippo: Yeah, you take the hit in saves, but you gotta do this trade. Hunter is what he is, which is to say boring but valuable.

    EDIT: Capitalization.

  33. BigFatHippo says:
    (link)

    Thanks Grey

First offer I ever got from this guy and it’s a good one. I’m up by 11.5 right now as my buddy had a huge day. Went from 23 up down to this in a week, mostly hitting. Today sucked, how the hell do I get 3 losses from 3 all stars, Kaz, Hamels and Webb. Bout to throw myself off a bridge.

Lotta ball left to play, keep Razzing.

  34. Baron Von Vulturewins says:
    (link)

@BigFatHippo: I benched Pence today against Kaz, so of course he goes yard. Sigh.

By the way, after months of skepticism, I am now a Cuetoliever. He looked dominant against the Yanks today, and I picked him up. (He’d been dropped awhile ago by his frustrated waiver-priority-wasting owner.)

There’s a recurring pattern with young pitchers — Lincecum, Hamels — that they struggle for a month or so when first called up, then put it all together. Maybe — maybe — this is Cueto turning the corner. Worth an add, at least, I think. See ya, Masa Kobayashi.

@BigFatHippo: Yes, do that. Maybe flip Hunter for a middling closer like Kevin Gregg. Saves are easy to replace, if you are vigilant.

I now have six-headed rotation of Hamels, Lackey, Cain, Lowe, S. Baker and Cueto. Of those final three, who do you like best through worst?

  35. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@Baron Von Vulturewins: Hamels, Lackey, Cain, Cueto, Baker, Lowe.

The rookie pitcher thing is an adjustment period and it happens to just about all rookie pitchers. Cueto might be out of it. He’s definitely worth trying on for size.

  36. Kevin says:
    (link)

I feel a whole lot better about Cueto lately. He got screwed by no run support and a long rain delay today. Now Manny Parra is another matter. He got the win today but 1 to 6 K/BB?? He just flat walks too many hitters. I guess I am going to have to bench him for another month like I did prior to my activating him against the O’s today.

  37. SaltyBiscuits says:

    @ Grey

Do you have inside info on Wainwright that I am missing? All reports said it wasn’t too serious and to expect him back shortly after being eligible to return.

I need him to come back strong as my #2.
