Don't be shellfish...FacebookTwitterGoogle+

Justin Upton left yesterday’s game with a sprained ankle.  It’s obviously not easy carrying around millions of fantasy baseballers’ hopes and dreams.  He hurt his ankle while stealing second, then he advanced to third and scored one batter later.  I liked Upton 1.0 better, which came with customizable speed and power but no hustle.  The good news is Upton wasn’t removed until after scoring, so it doesn’t sound serious.  Just precautionary.  It’s an exhibition, after all.  You know, like when Kenny Mayne ran Daisy Fuentes for Jerry O’Connell in the 2005 Celebrity Softball game.  Anyway, here’s some more news in fantasy baseball:

Dustin Pedroia – Left wrist sprain.  It’s spraining, men!  That’ll teach Pedroia to try and open the pickle jar all by himself.  This actually worries me more than the Upton sprain.  Injured wrists are tricky for, ya know, hitting.  He’s scheduled to take BP on Thursday so hopefully it’s very minor and the pain doesn’t have to, doesn’t have to, doesn’t have to let it linger.

Ian Desmond – With five errors this spring (as of this writing), he was making it hard for the Nats to choose him over the yawnstipating Guzman.  Nevertheless!  Jon Heyman of SI, which I believe is not a Spanish language magazine, says Desmond is going to win the starting job.  Shine on you crazy Desmond!

Jaime Garcia – Will be the Cards fifth starter.  In the minors, he showed a solid K-rate and great ground ball rates.  Strikeouts + ground balls = Success.  The only downside is his lack of experience, i.e., he can blow up in your face.  Right now, he’s a solid NL-Only sleeper, but he can easily jump onto mixed league radars.

Albert Pujols – Returned to the lineup.  Pujols eats MRIs for breakfast.

Sean Rodriguez – Zobrist will definitely be playing somewhere, but where might factor into if Matt Joyce or Sean Rodriguez play.  Sean-Rod has been hitting in the spring and has a solid pedigree.  I put Rodriguez in my top 20 2nd basemen post, and I’m a big fan if he can score an every day job.  Joyce, meanwhile, hasn’t done anything and may start the season on the DL.  If Gabe Kapler starts in lieu of Rodriguez and Joyce, then it’s welcome back 1999.

Ervin Santana – Hurt his elbow after hitting it on some furniture.  Not a broken armchair, just a slightly sore armchair, thankfully.  Word on the streets of Bobby Grichville is Ervin will be fine.

C.J. Wilson – Will be the Rangers number two starter this year.  (Feldman, Harrison and Colby Lewis will join him after Harden.  I wish the Rangers would dump Wilson and Harrison and add some guys named Astin and Brolin to Feldman.  Let’s get some Goonies up in there!)  I’d chalk up Wilson becoming a starter to the Rangers going with an innings eater, but he’s never pitched more than 74 innings any season in his career.  If Wilson can maintain his reliever K-rates, he could surprise, but I wouldn’t touch him outside of AL-Only leagues until during the season.  And even then, I’ll have a hard time adding him.

Gil Meche – Out with shoulder stiffness.  If you needed a reason to ignore him, now you have one.

Alex Gordon – Won’t be ready by Opening Day.  Not sure if this is good news or bad news for Royals, fantasy baseball owners or Gordon.  Jury’s been out for three years now.

Alberto Callapso – Hillman plans on trying Callaspo out in the three hole.  This is one of the funniest bits of news I’ve read this Spring Training.  It’s just inherently hilarious.  Callaspo a three hitter?  Ha!  Ladies and gentlemen, your peasant Royals!  If Alex Gordon was the unrealized hopes of another George Brett.  Callaspo is Kevin Seitzer.

Blake DeWitt – I might be the only one that cares about this because I drafted Belliard in my Fantasy Razzball league, but DeWitt looks like he has the inside track for the 2nd base job.  He’s a poor man’s Casey McGehee. (<–Not a compliment)

Chris Iannetta – I wish I could say Chris Iannetta is proving Olivo to be from The Department of Redundancy Department.  Still think Iannetta emerges with more ABs, but they might be pretty close to a timeshare like your Aunt Mitzi has in Boca.  Playing only four days a week, Iannetta might just be Napoli for the NL.  If only Joe Torre managed them… Or Paul Sorvino.

Andrew Bailey – Close to returning to action and should be ready for Opening Day.  Doesn’t mean another flare-up isn’t a week or so away.

Mike MacDougal – Released by the Marlins and signed by the Nats.  Capps is still the closer in Washington, but MacDougal could serve as insurance.  He was good in Washington last year and he was great in the Doobie Brothers.

Jon Niese – Just about has the 5th starter job locked up.  He hasn’t reached mixed league material yet.  In NL-Only leagues, he’s there.  He’ll get you a mid-4 ERA and a near 7 K/9.  Last round or dollar flier?  It can’t hurt.

Daniel Murphy – With Ike Davis sent down (surprisingly, Ike is not a slap hitter), Murphy has secured the 1st base job.  It won’t be pretty though.

Jose Reyes – Reyes finished first in full-squad sprints.  I’m putting it at 3 to 1 for him playing Opening Day.  Even odds says he’s back within two weeks.  The time to buy low is running out.

Gary Matthews Jr. – Okay, this is the funniest news I’ve read this Spring Training.  The Mets are shopping Gary Matthews Jr.  Reminds me of the homeless man who lives down the street selling his barely used pants.

    Looking to add some depth to my starting pitching, 14 team, auction, 9 keepers, 3yr max. Current staff is Grienke,
    F-Her, Oswalt, Correia. Wells, Bumgarner, Jaime Garcia. The free agent list be slim pickins so the options are
    pretty yucky. Looking to add a few, what names would you recommend?

    Cahill, Zito, Hammel, Kawakami, Padilla, Paulino, A. Sanchez, Duensing, Stauffer, Rzepcynski, Nieve,
    Niese, C. Lewis, Pavano, B. Myers, Garland, Gallagher.

    Thank you

    Would you potentially suggest Sean-Rod over Scutaro for a 2b/SS position?

    thanks.

    @simply fred: let me know about the war room, i haven’t even accessed it yet at home, and I can’t at school. Our draft was impressive, ichiro went into the 7th round? HA! Thats awesome, and sick chubbs…

    @grey: i snagged zigler in my RCL last night just in case bailey hiccups, and would you rather have rollins or reyes? I went Fielder, Rollins, and Youk in my first 3 last nite. Kinda wishing I woulda went Fielder, Agon, and then Reyes for the speed and SS fill. Hindsite is 20/20 huh?

    my head still hurts from that draft…..

    I’ve got a draft tonight. In a 5X5 mixed roto league, around what pick overall would you take Jose Reyes? I pick 8th in a 10-team league, so I’ve got the 8th, 13th, 28th, 33rd, 48th, 53rd, etc picks.

    would you put Garcia or Niese in your top 300? if so, roughly where?

  8. Tony says:

    @Eric: 28th or 33rd, he shouldnt be there if your league knows anything by 53….. i’d almost say take him with your 3rd round pick 28th overall….

    @Grey: I’m a little confused with your assessment of my team. As a refresher, my team (12 team points league) is as follows:

    C: Soto
    1B: A. Gonzalez
    2B: Utley
    SS: Andrus
    3B: Chipper/C. Davis/Headley
    OF: Kemp
    OF: Sizemore
    OF: Cruz
    Util: Pence
    SP: Haren
    SP: Ubaldo
    SP: Garza
    SP: Wandy
    RP: Wagner
    RP: Hoffman

    Bench: Jon Sanchez, Masterson, Corey Hart, Fowler, Harang, Desmond

    You said I was weak on power, but looking at your projections everybody except Andrus, Chipper (20), and Soto (18) is expected to hit over 25 HRs. I realize I drafted 3 third basement, but I am trying to hedge my bets with Mr. Glass at third. Pitchers went so quick in this draft that by the 15th, Masterson and Harang were the only guys left from your top 80, which is why I picked up some bench hitters with upside/backups to my starters.

    Love the site and surely appreciate any advice.

    @Tony: For a second I thought you did stay up really late to work the waiver wire, forgot that the comments post showing pacific time. I’m still getting over the shame of not being prepared for when the guy I was sitting on was taken right before me, catching me with my queue empty and ESPN auto picking Brandon Webb when I timed out.

  11. Tony says:
    (link)

    @eltoo: haha, ya that sucks, my queue was filled then just destroyed each round…. i literally got sniped all damn draft. I wish i woulda took reyes now instead of Rollins, i think that might be my one regret, in a league like this the risk/reward would have been HUGE. Razz favs just flew off the board, almost to the point i think alot of value was lost, what do you think?

    I mean andrus in the 8th was it? I know fred wanted stewart but in the 7th or 8th where he took HIM?

  12. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)

    @David: i think your team looks damn solid. i like hedging your bets with multiple 3Bs if you aren’t landing one of the top guys (longoria, wright, zimm, youk, reynolds, and i guess kung fu panda too). that’s what i’m trying to do, i figure if i have 2 or 3 lower 3Bs, hopefully at least one of them breaks out and has a solid season.

    I am thinking of hitchin a ride on the Sean Rodriguez bandwagon. Only problem is, in order to make room, I’ve got to drop formerly-awesome, then formerly-shizzy Kelly Johnson. Is it worth dropping Johnson to see what Rodriguez can do?

    “The Department of Redundancy Department” – nicely played!
    In NL-Only, better catcher – Clement, Olivo or Pudge? (yeah, I punted catcher) Clement looks to get the most ABs, but he’s had a rough spring.
    Also, will EY Jr. break camp w/ the Rox? If not, how long’s the wait?
    Thx.

    draft strategy question guys….drafting 11th – 12 team H2H – be looking at 1b/3b in 1st/2nd rounds (some combo of Tex/Cab/Howard/Long/Wright), unless someone drops. In my mocks I’m consistently seeing Phillips there at the end of round 3. Would you grab him, or Mourneau/Youk to shore up my CI spot & grab 2nd later (Stewart). I’ll be getting my #1 OF at the beginning of round 4, unless I already have one.

  16. Beau says:

    Hey guys, after much prep finally had my keeper draft last night. I think I did pretty well after having to punt ss/3b/mi. Its a 10 team 5×5 mixed league with standard positions plus MI, CI, 2 util, 3 of, 3 sp, 3rp, 5 p spots and only 2 bn spots. Here is my team, any thoughts?
    c: napoli
    1b: fielder
    2b: utley
    3b: chris davis
    ss: miguel tejada
    mi:barmes
    ci: fielder
    of: ellsbury, holliday, quentin
    util: beltran, garrett jones
    bn:rasmus
    sp: lester, hamels, nolasco, garza, webb, buchholz, hughes
    rp: marmol, aardsma, jenks, capps, perez

    I probably shouldve filled my infield before grabbing some of the pitchers, but with so many pitchers being kept i wanted to make sure i got solid middle tier value. Here are some players on waivers, anyone think i should grab them:
    Juan rivera, fragu, s.sizemore, mcgehee, ervin santana, dotel, lyon

    Thanks!

  17. eltoo says:

    yeah, I took Andrus real early, but have no regrets about that pick. didn’t think he’d make it back to me in the next round and as it stands he’s the only guy on my team thats a lock to steal 20+ bags. I was hoping to grab beckham there, but like all the guys I usually start reaching for in the 7th round on, he was long gone in this draft.

  18. GopherDay says:

    Grey, what do you think about my team? Its a 12 team 6X6 ROTO league (Ks and HLDS added) where we keep players 2 rounds ahead of where they were drafted.

    I auto-picked the team because I couldn’t make the draft, so my team is not ideal, but I am wondering what you think about it.

    C: Mike Napoli
    1B: Albert Pujols
    2B: Robinson Cano
    SS: Jimmy Rollins
    3B: Ryan Zimmerman
    MI: Ian Desmond
    CI: Ian Stewart
    IF: Nick Swisher
    LF: Carlos Quentin
    CF: Curtis Granderson
    RF: Josh Hamilton
    OF: Austin Jackson
    Util: Vladimir Guerrero

    SP: Johan Santana
    SP: Cole Hamels
    RP: Brian Fuentes
    RP: Chris Perez
    P: Mike Adams
    P: Clayton Kershaw
    P: Chad Billingsley
    P: Roy Oswalt
    BN: Franklin Morales

  19. mc serch says:

    @David: I think your team looks pretty stacked. How the heck did you end up with Utley, Kemp, A-Gon and Grady in a 12 teamer? IMO, you need a low WHIP fifth starter (you have tons of k’s) and another guy for saves, but that’s about it. Good draft!

    Grey, would you ever take Rios before Pence?

  26. Beau says:
    (link)

    @Tony: That sounds decent. I guess I dont need 5 closers. Might as well accumulate talent and then try to trade a few weeks into the season.

  27. David says:
    (link)

    @ThePoonTycoon: Yeah, after I didn’t land Zim, I had to shift my strategy. No way I’m trusting Chipper to man the third base spot all season.

    @mc serch: Thanks! This was by far the weirdest draft I’ve ever participated in. Pitchers were flying off the board early and I loaded up on studs. The only downside is I didn’t get guys like Cole and Bills because they were gone way before I was expecting to draft them. Kurt Suzuki got taken in the 7th!

  28. Jesse says:
    (link)

    Um, just a thought, but let’s maybe not abuse the privilege of getting all kinds of advice at all times of day that we’ve been spoiled with by posting our entire fantasy teams and asking Grey to break them down. I mean, ultimately, all you’re looking for is someone to say, “You did a good job!” and give you the proverbial pat on the back – there’s no real substantive question or request for advice there, so maybe let’s just keep our entire rosters to ourselves, huh?

  29. Tony says:

    also, am i the only person who feels like they may end up with dotel on every team?

  31. Beau says:
    (link)

    @Tony: Yeah, for a $$ keeper league it was a weird draft with a few people autodrafting from their queue towards the end and the commish just plain not showing up a lot of closers were left late in the draft. I decided to stick with my overall strategy and punt offensive bench and just grab low risk extra pitchers.

  32. PepeSilvia says:
    (link)

    hey Grey, I wanted to ask for your thoughts on a proposed trade. here’s my current starting lineup and starting rotation (12 team keeper league, no MI or CI but we do have a U):

    C Montero
    1B Fielder
    2B Roberts
    3B Wright
    SS Andrus
    LF Morgan
    CF Pacman
    RF Bruce
    U Morales
    SP Lester
    SP Jimenez
    SP Nolasco
    SP Shields
    SP Webb

    I’m really not happy with Morgan as my LF (also took Coghlan but I don’t think he really helps things), took him too early b/c the decent LFs were running out and I thought I needed speed but I ended up getting that from Andrus later.

    Anyway, what do you think of a deal where I give up Morales and Shields and get back Lind and Sheets? One point in my favor is that Lind is an 18th round keeper whereas Morales is a 13th. But am I still getting hosed?

  35. Beau says:

    @GopherDay: Thats such the strange thing, it is a very competitive keeper league, I think its the 3rd or 4th year of the league and he has been very active keeping everything set up with all sorts of keeper trades and draft pick trades in the off seasons, and then just didnt show up and no one could get a hold of him. Bizzare. Maybe he was hanging out with grey and some “actresses” or something.

    Callaspo is actually a pretty valuable player in real-world baseball, not that it matters much here. In fantasy, his upside is probably crapolanco with a teeny bit more power. I’ve drank/drunken/drunk/poured-the-powder-directly-into-my-mouth of the kool-aid on waiting until late in the draft on catchers and closers, but still haven’t mastered how long to wait. In a 10 team 5×5 league, how long do you suggest holding off on grabbing one of those two positions?

    Anyone else noticed how late 1B power is going? After the first round, everyone seems to be passing, thinking they can get those stats late because it’s such a deep position. Which it’s not, after I (you) take them all.

    Just saying, because it’s become an exploitable market inefficiency. I’ve never seen 1B so ignored after the top 3 or 4 are gone.

    @Jason: I like to grab a closer somewhere near the 10th round, a second maybe around 15-20 range and then a couple near the very end of the draft. I am definitely a sagnof guy but i hate relying completely on waivers. I think the best way to approach closers is to being the guy in my keeper draft last night who took Mo in the 4th, but if its the 20th and you dont have any you are probably screwed.

  48. Beau says:
    (link)

    @Beau: I mean NOT be the guy in my draft who took Mo in the 4th…

  49. charlie batch says:
    (link)

    @Jason: hey man. I know youre looking for grey to respond but personally, using razzball philosophy, I like to wait until the 13th or 14th round before looking at closers, and the 16th/17th for a catcher. If all the good catchers are gone before the 16th then I take the best one available in the last round. Theyre all the same!

  50. nmdunkel says:
    (link)

    @Jason:

    My two cents would be to use your very last pick on a catcher. Like a John Baker or a Molina.

    Closers? That differs from draft to draft. Sometimes people get crazy and you end up with the Dotel’s of the world. But I’d definitely want a core lineup that I felt good about and a couple quality SP before I jumped into the closer pool. If you end up getting burned on closers, load up on setup guys and pray. Usually about a 30% turnover rate with them.

  51. @royce!:

    OK, last time I ask this as my draft is Friday:

    12-team mixed league, 5×5, with $260 in auction money. I can keep three of the following:

    BJ Upton: $1
    Hanson: $1
    Wieters: $1
    ARod: $37

    I’m torn between keeping Arod or Wieters. Since there are so many good players being kept (Braun, Lincecum for $1), we have some price inflation that will drive Arod’s value to around $55.

    So, do I keep Arod for $37 and save ~$18 while going with a $1 Napoli or do I stick with Wieters for $1 and drop the $50+ on an Arod or Utley?

    Thanks all. Last time I ask I promise!!

    I’ll let it slide this time, but if you say one unkind word about Corey Snyder or Jeff Frye, I’m through with Razzball. For at least an hour.

  56. Tarasco'sSecretStash says:
    (link)

    @ Tony: I dunno, I kinda like Robot as a razzball flyer, if such a beast can be said to exist. He whiffs a good deal, his steals don’t count, Pittsburgh’s offense sucks so he won’t score or drive in many runs, he’s reasonably guaranteed a full season of AB’s regardless of performance, and if his seems-too-high-to-be-sustainable 21+% HR/FB and .323 BABIP rates regress this year he could be a nice little cornerman.

  57. GopherDay says:

    @Jackie: If I were you, I wouldn’t keep Hanson for a dollar. Wieters > Hanson….at that price, go for hitters….So then your keepers would be A-Rod, Upton, Wieters.

    Just my two cents.

    @matthole: Yup

    @Ben C: Lose Bumgarner for Paulino.

    @JRT: If he starts…

    @Tony: Rollins is fine.

    @David: Your hitting looks very balanced. All I can say is some times I’ll scroll up to look at a team and scroll down to write a critique and when I scroll back up I look at the wrong team. Easy way around this is the forums.

    @Eric: 48th

    @Josh: 300

    @Jesse: Kinda depends on the team, but I probably wouldn’t right now.

    @magicterp: Clement — No on Young.

    @steamer: Phillips

    @Beau: For a ten team league, it should be a stronger offense even with Fielder listed twice. Your pitching looks fine.

    @GopherDay: Really not a terrible team considering it was autodrafted. Your pitching looks stronger than your hitting, which isn’t great. You’ll probably need to trade a starter for some hitting help. But you have the arms to do it.

    @GTS: Thanks for the update!

    @Frank Rizzo: Francisco never had competition. He had a capable setup man. He still does.

    @Back to Minors: If I needed Runs/Speed over RBIs/power.

    @PepeSilvia: Lind over Morales, but those pitchers make the deal not so good.

    @Thunder Dan: Hehe

    @mannybeingmanny: Need to know how many teams.

    @Tarasco’sSecretStash: That’s awesome! Krispie’s downside worries me a bit and some of those bench hitters can go real cold. Nice team though!

    @Dingo: Ha!

    @Eric H.: They’re pretty equal, do different things. Depends what you need. McLouth will give you 20 steals, Vlad won’t. Vlad could give you a .300 average and 100 RBIs, McLouth won’t.

    @royce!: Ha!

    If you were in a 12 team keeper(24 round draft) would you make the following move?

    Carlos Santana (a 24 round keeper)

    for

    Josh Hamilton (9th Round)

    If I kept Hamilton next year, I’d give up my 9 spot where as Santana would essentially stay on my minor league squad until called up and then be a 24 pick for the next 5 years

    @Nate Marcum: all 3 twins SPs look good going into the season, but i think it’s just oo many eggs in one basket. is it roto or h2h? roto, i guess it doesn’t matter as much since stats are cumulative and 3 SPs can have good seasons on 1 staff, but h2h could suck if the twins have tough matchups for a week. i would probably want more/better depth behind liriano than just niemann, that’s for sure.

    News for you deeper league players, Dan McCutchen has won the 5th rotation spot for the Pirates:

    http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/2872/no-5-starter-watch-pirates

    Here is what I said about D. McCutchen:

    “The last piece to the Nady/Marte trade, Capt’n McCutchen isn’t your typical prospect. Old enough to quote The Goonies, and more tired than the trek those young boys took, Dan threw 171 innings in 2008 with the Yanks and Pirates. Thus, the Pirates chose to rest him for the beginning part of 2009. After being homer prone for most his career, he significantly cut his homer rate this year. Definitely a fly-ball pitcher, McCutchen has a 90 to 93 mph fastball, a hard curve and a decent change-up. With impeccable control and the potential to be the middle of the rotation stalwart (no. 3 or 4), the Pirates should give McCutchen all the chances he needs to pitch in the majors in 2010 as he has performed well at each level in the minors.”

    ***Words of warning on Jaime Garica:

    @Stephen: Gotcha

    @Paulie Allnuts: I trust Fred’s breakdown. Seems surprising to me that you came in 2nd with those homers, guess Kinsler at 2nd is helping that. I think you’re heavy on speed and light on power, obviously. Your WHIP will be an issue, I think your staff hinges on Wandy.

    @aj: You getting tart on the Cranberries?

    @Chicago Mike: Hard for me to pick out something I really don’t like on your team, so that’s a good thing. Your speed hinges on Alcides. But if Lilly comes back strong, which I doubt, then you’ll have SPs to trade.

    @Nate Marcum: You have 4 starters and two are Twins and one is the AL East. That doesn’t scream confidence to me, but if Liriano can step up you could be fine. But then you’ll have three Twins.

    @Mr2Bits: I’d want Hamilton.

    @ThePoonTycoon: It is Roto, but I agree 100% with you on the Twins thing. It was the NFBC, which I will admit, was a little nerve wracking. I truthfully went into this thinking that Gardenhire would use Liriano in the closer’s role, but figured in any role, he would provide value. I personally don’t like that much volatility in the RP, but competition was tough, so I will just have to be content, my offense should be solid enough to off-set some of the pitching woes.
