Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

You’ve seen Grey’s PEDS, you’ve seen his auction strategy, you’ve seen his Pitcher Pairings, you’ve seen his rankings, you’ve seen his Fantasy Baseball War Room, you’ve seen his mustache… doode’s an open book (and actually, he’s got one of them, too). He’s fantasy baseball’s equivalent of Anna Paquin, constantly naked but odd-looking, so who cares? Wait, he’s more like Helen Hunt, willing to do full frontal, but way past his expiration date. Hmm, maybe Anne Hathaway, baring it all but overrated in terms of talent and sexiness? Point is, he shows a lot, but he’s less accessible than he appears.

This is where I come in. I can’t get you access to any of those actresses. Hell, I can’t even get within 500 yards of them… except for Anna Paquin, but who cares? I can help you with Grey, though. Specifically, I can help you navigate his Pitcher Pairings, which reads like something scribbled in one of John Doe’s notebooks in Se7en.

Let’s say it’s the beginning of the 3rd round and you see Clayton Kershaw is still on the board. Your draft strategy never accounted for having an elite SP, but you’re not gonna let this value slip by. Now you need to know who to pair him with. You can jump over to Grey’s article, find the paragraph that deals with this scenario, find the sentence that tells you what tier your next SP should be from, find that tier in the SP rankings, and then cross-reference those SPs with the ones still on the board to prepare for your next pick.

Except now it’s the middle of the 5th round and you’ve been auto-drafted Yadier Molina and Miguel Montero. You don’t need to prepare for the rest of your picks, you need to prepare for a season of endless mocking.

If only there was a web tool where you could have just clicked on Kershaw’s name and it would have brought you straight to a list of players which your next SP should be selected from… a list which also shows Grey’s Top 400 ranking for each of them (and auction draft value, if you’re into that sort of thing). Guess what? Really, that’s your guess? That’s worst guess I’ve ever heard. Stop guessing.

I’ve created such a web tool, and it’s called APPLES (Albright’s Pitcher Pairing Listing Examination System). You start on the home page where you simply click on the name of the pitcher you’ve selected first. You will be magically transported to a new page where you will see a list of pitchers which Grey feels you should make your next SP. When you make that pick, click on the SPs name and you’ll get a new list… and so on. This goes on for six picks total (again, based on Grey’s recommendation).

There are a few things I should point out:

1. As I’ve already mentioned, this is all based on Grey’s recommendations. He’s the one who scribbled in the notebooks, I’m just the guy who had to read them all and create a CliffsNotes version.

2. The lists do not update dynamically, so just because you’ve clicked on a pitcher’s name on one page, his name may still show up on the next page if he’s in the group of recommended pitchers. You’ll just have to remember who you’ve already drafted… I think you can manage. Yeah, even you.

3. Depending on what path you take through the Pitcher Pairings, some of the pages you see may look similar. And I don’t mean the way these two look similar, but more like the way Sibel Kekilli from Game of Thrones looks similar to former porn actress Dilara. This is because sometimes your best strategy is to take two SPs from the same group.

4. Which brings me to my next point. Since you may need to take two SPs from the same group, I recommend that you jump ahead a pick (if you have the time) to check if that’s the case. If so, you’ll want to plan accordingly. You don’t want to end up selecting one of the last remaining pitchers from a group only to find out that your next pick should have been from that group, too.

5. Finally, while APPLES isn’t exclusively for use with snake drafts, it isn’t terribly easy to use with an auction draft, since players from all over the map can be put on the block at any time. If you do want to use it during an auction draft, I recommend committing to one path, and then taking some time to go through that path before the draft starts. This will help you get acquainted with the SPs you’re going to want to keep an eye out for, and it will also allow you to jump back and forth in your browser along your path (by using the Forward and Back commands).

Any questions? Please post in the comments below… and here’s that link to APPLES again.

I was going over my draft from last night…

    1 – Wainwright
    jumps to 3?
    3 – Samardzija
    jumps to 5?
    5 – Milone

    Done?

I’m confused… while all three were there and correct, it didn’t ask me to input Moore (who I took 2nd) or Harvey (who I took 4)

    Am I missing something?

OMG, I love this. I’m in a 10 team H2H 6 keeper league and I’m keeping no pitchers, so this will be instrumental in helping me navigate when, where and who I should get.

If I hadn’t stumbled across this I may have just picked 24 hitters and 1 pitcher, and the pitcher would have been an actual pitcher of iced tea.

@Awesomus Maximus: Thanks for maximizing the awesomeness of the pairings. When can we expect the wine pairings app? I’m planning a delicious Salmon with yellow pepper salsa, I need to know if I need a Reisling or Chardonnay. Then after the wine, do I reach for Samardzija in the 13th or the 14th round to make sure I get him because I need two from that grouping.

Great now dinner is ruined, and my child is crying because my fantasy team has a bunch of schmohawks.

@Robert: Since I drink everything in copious amounts, just wanted to give you the heads up.

Normally, I’d go with a Riesling, since salmon is a fatty fish and pairs well with a little acidity.

But, since you are using a yellow pepper salsa, I could see a Chardonnay here too. But you’ll want to roast or grill the fish to bring out the crispness in the pairing.

Personally, if it were me though, I always enjoy a Cabernet with fatty fish. Its softer and less tannic.

hey guys, I need some draft strategy advice.

my 12 team league has up to 6 keepers. you get to keep them rounds 1-6…
to be honest, i feel like my team’s pretty stacked.. of the team, the ones worth keeping are

    Trout
    Cano
    bautista
    longoria

    Lee
    Darvish
    Chapman
    Cueto

    craig
    rizzo
    castro
    morrow
    harvey

and ideally i would keep trout, cano, bautista, longo, darvish and lee from that list… i’d go more if i could. A lot of players in the leauge will be keeping 6… this means the draft will move very fast through the first few rounds as the best players are mostly going to be locked up, and only the teams with shit players will be drafting.

The thing is I have the opportunity to trade Lee for round 5 and round 6 draft picks.
another offer i have is cueto for a round 4 draft pick

if i trade lee, then i would then keep chapman and use those picks to grab craig and cueto…or rizzo? i was thinking maybe castro, but maybe its better to punt ss. i’d come out of round 6 with trout, longo, bautista, cano, chapman, darvish, cueto and craig.

otherwise, i’d trade cueto and choose chapman in the 4th round? (giving me trout, longo, bautista, cano, chapman, lee, darvish at the end of round 6)

I know Lee’s gonna pitch better than cano, but i kind of view the first trade as sacrificing lee to keep a larger young core haha. am i stupid to think this is a solid strategy?

This is a great tool, however I am not sure how applicable it is to keeper leagues. For example, on page 1, the only pitchers one can draft in my league are King Felix and Greinke. I kept Cliff Lee and the only pitcher on page 2 is Gallardo. Then it’s not til page 5 that there is another pitcher I am able to draft.

  29. Don Sarver says:
    (link)

I’m in an ESPN money league where it appears the commissioner set some rules to I think balance the odds in his favor. I dont think anyone else has caught on to his trickery and I want to turn the odds against him.

    The rule set
    Games Played Limits (Maximums)
    Batters No Limit
    Pitchers 12 Games Started

I’ve never played with this rule before, i believe this means that pitchers can only play (be in my lineup) a Max of 12 games/starts before they cant be used. This tells me that I need to play the match ups. It also tells me that I need to under value the pitchers? Meaning its not worth it drafting a second or third tier pitcher unless I have my hitters set first is that correct?

So going into the draft this weekend, should that be my strategy drafting pitchers? Is wait until i have my starting hitters drafted before going after pitchers?

  30. Homer at the Bat says:

Just discovered this, and I think it’s freaking awesome, thanks for the hard work!

One question: your system strangely doesn’t seem to work for Grey’s “ideal” situation. From the pitcher pairings post:

“This is my ideal pairing… . Grab your first pitcher from the Lee tier, your next pitcher from the Darvish tier then two pitchers from Samardzija’s tier, one from Kuroda or Parker’s tiers then Estrada. So you could have Matt Moore, Medlen, Samardzija, Morrow, Beckett and Estrada.”

But if I click Moore, then Medlen, then Samardzija, it doesn’t give me the option to grab another guy from the Samardzija tier. It only lists the Beckett and Parker tiers as options for the 4th and 5th pitchers.
