Razzball Hittertron:  This tool is designed to identify attractive short-term hitter pickups and to determine when to start/sit hitters on your roster.  (For Daily Fantasy Baseball games, check out DFSBot)  The higher the $ value, the more attractive the start.  Hitter-Tron projections rely on Steamer Rest of Season projections as a foundation and then adjust based on several game-specific factors that include quality of opposing starting pitcher, hitter’s performance vs. the handedness of opposing starting pitcher, park factors, whether the game is home or away, and predicted batting order spot (for Runs, RBIs, and Plate Appearances).

What Is The Expected Accuracy Of Hittertron Projections?:  Please see the Razzball Ombotsman for correlations betweeen the Hittertron projections and actual stats.

Filtering Results:  You can filter multiple fields at the same time.  The text fields below the column headers enable several methods for filtering the data.  Here are some examples:

Function Symbol Example Explanation
ANY MATCH ‘B’ in Pos Typing B in Pos will filter to any player with 1B, 2B, or 3B eligibility.  Type in more details to filter further – e.g., “1B’, “1B, 3B”, etc.
OR | 2B|SS Requires exact match on both sides – so 2B|SS returns anyone who has 2B or SS eligibility but not anyone with 2B/SS, 2B/3B, etc.
NOT ! !OF All players who do not have OF eligibility.
NOR ! | !1B|OF All players who do not have 1B eligibility NOR OF eligibility.  Just use the ! once.
GREATER THAN > >30 in $ All players whose $ is greater than 30.  Does not work for Date.
LESS THAN < <30 in $ All players whose $ is less than 30.  Does not work for Date.
GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO >= >=30 in $ All players whose $ is greater than or equal to 30.  Does not work for date.
LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO <= <=30 in $ All players whose $ is less than or equal to 30.  Does not work for Date.

Position Eligibility – 20 Games in last season for ESPN and ’2 Catcher’ formats.   5 Games for Yahoo.

$ Values – A hitter’s projected stats for the game are multiplied by 150 and then valued for a 12-team MLB league using the ESPN/CBSSports roster format (13 hitters, 9 pitchers) and a $260 team budget.  While the $ values would vary for any other league format, we would expect the rankings to remain relatively the same.  The ‘$U’ estimate is position-neutral and is the value to use when looking at players for Utility slots.  We have found this is the key $ value for ‘Daily’ roster changes.  Position-adjusted $ can be found in the Weekly Hittertron and in the Hittertron projection on the player pages (accessible by clicking on the player name).

%Start – This is the estimated percentage that a player will start in a game.  This takes recent playing time into account including the handedness of the pitcher for platoon hitters.  It does not take day-to-day injuries into account – either for the injured player or the fill-in player.  Recently called up players who are not undisputed starters may take a couple weeks before their playing time estimate matches reality (until then it’s underestimated).  More info can be found in this post.

Own% –  Based on ownership within the Razzball Commenter Leagues which consists of 84 12-team MLB leagues using the standard ESPN roster format.

  1. TysonFrozenChicken says:

What does it mean when guys like Konerko, for example, have a blank space instead of a value for the day?

  2. Eddy says:

Hey Rudy, want to give my thanks for the Hitter Tron (and SON). They’ve been very important in my success!

Felt like throwing a suggestion for the offseason.

I find myself in the playoffs frantically overanalyzing a lot of hitters for certain days and in doing so have to open up a lot of tabs and flip back and forth.

Is it possible to bring in a compare tool? Maybe fill out a max of 10 names that would just contain your basic hitter tron info like $ value, opposing pitchers, home/away.

It’d save a lot of time and make it much easier to comb through several hitters.

    • @Eddy: You’re welcome, Eddy. In the name field, just separate names with a | and it acts like an ‘or’. So Venable|Gyorko will show both batters in the results. I don’t think there’s a character count so should work w/ 10 hitters. Let me know if that works for you.

  3. Manly McAwesomepants says:

FYI, hitter projections for 4/3 don’t include any players for the Oakland Athletics.

    • Good catch. Was a minor glitch in handling guys who recently were called up (Elias). Fixed.

  4. faustocarmona says:

quick question(probably a dumb one)…i’m trying to do side by side comparisons using the “|” (i.e. Rizzo|Hosmer). I cant get that to work. not a big deal just thought id point that out. or am i totally doing something wrong?

    • @faustocarmona: yeah, some weird thing happened in the last update where it no longer wildcards for the or function. So type in Anthony Rizzo | Eric Hosmer and it will work.

  5. beepboopbeep says:

Any chance that start times could be added to the Hittertron, as well as Streamonator? Would be super useful for daily fantasy sites where you have subgroups of games broken up by Early/Late Afternoon/Late.

    • @beepboopbeep: will consider it. i have the information. just not a lot of room on the page to add another column.

  6. Jon says:

Excellent daily tool Rudy. Thank you for the time you put into it and for assisting with followers as well.

I am currently on “FanDuel” (didn’t know about draftkings). Is there a preference you would suggest to sort hitters by considering a 35k salary cap? I use $ value majority of the time as a reference. Curious if the original ranks might be a better tool, or if you have other suggestions.

    Thanks Rudy!

    • Thanks. Sorting by $ is the best way for now. Working on a solution that will be a lot more useful.

  7. kexin says:

the hitter-tron is broken. adam jones isnt facing dickey tomorrow because dickey is pitching today. abreu isnt facing carrasco hes facing salazar right now

    • kexin says:

@kexin: tillman is pitching tomorrow for the Os not norris etc. please fix

      • @kexin: The hitter-tron was delayed a day because of a delay w/ the data feed. All updated.

  8. Small hands make my Cishek look bigger says:

You may want to check the ownership tab, as it doesn’t appear to be able to sort by right now.

  9. vinny says:

hello, there seems to be an issue w the line-ups page?… is this an issue w baseballpress side of site? either way i just wanted to see if others are experiencing this, or if anything had changed recently. i sed to be able to click on any player in the line-up and get their projections, but today it goes to a blank page. i appreciate all the help. thanks, vinny.

  10. MB says:

Does this mean I should bench Justin Upton for Yelich Sunday, April 20?

    • @MB: your call. Upton’s swinging a hot bat but Yelich’s got a juicy matchup against Maurer (beavan injured).

  11. BigDeal says:

How is Hunter Pence ranked #15 on this list for 4/23 when he’s 0-14 career with 0 walks vs. Tyler Chatwood?

    • @BigDeal: #1 – @ Coors, #2 Pence is good, #3 Chatwood is not good, #4 14 PAs not significant.

      • BigDeal says:

        @Rudy Gamble:

Oh ok. Thanks – that makes sense. So how many PAs do you count as significant? Are past history of hitter/pitcher matchups insignificant then? I generally tend to base who I start based mostly on the matchups and then look at hittertron. Am I doing it wrong?

        • from the research i’ve seen, hitter-pitcher matchup data is not very predictive because the samples are too small. by the time you get a large sample, the skill levels of the hitter/pitcher have changed too much. there are definitely cases where a hitter seems to own a pitcher and vice versa (Goldschmidt/Lincecum). I ignore matchups and go straight to hittertron.

          • BigDeal says:

            @Rudy Gamble:

Ok – cool – thanks. I’ll try this out. Where have you been all my life, Rudy!?

            • @BigDeal: Waiting for you to notice me like the cute but not hot girl in an 80’s teen movie.

  12. BigDeal says:

I am struggling with 3B in 12 team roto league on Yahoo. Zimmerman is on my DL. I’ve been riding Uribe, but he’s gone cold now. My waiver options are horrible also: Semien, Gillaspie, Reynolds, Holt, Romine, Murphy, Valbuena, Callaspo, Johnson, LeMahieu, and Francisco. Should I stick with Uribe, someone else, or go off HitterTron for each day?

  13. elipitt says:

Does hittertron/streamonator update daily? Wondering if I should wait until a certain time each day to set my daily lineups by them.

  14. Funky Tong says:

Is Gregory Polanco going to be added to the Tron?

  15. Freed says:

I see that Jose Abreu is not on the list for tomorrow (6/16/2014). Is that a mistake or??

    • Freed says:

      Sorry, I meant the 6/17/2014

      • Freed says:

Oh, it seems that the rankings are not updated for today(6/16) meaning that “tomorrows projection” is actually for TODAY.
        sorry for the confusion.

  16. ThrowCoachMatt says:

Is there any way to individually customize this feed for the categories pertinent to our own leagues? I’m thinking of something that could be saved as a browser cookie, then remembered each day going forward. Or something that allows us to weigh categories more/less heavily (so if I’m crushing the roto league in HR, additional HR don’t have much value to me so I would weigh them less). The data is very valuable as it is, but I’m pitching an idea for a way to make it more valuable – something I’m sure many of us would pay for.

Or if it’s already possible and I just can’t figure it out, then I suppose I’m a fool and need some guidance.

    • @ThrowCoachMatt: There isn’t currently a way to customize the daily tools per league format. In the recent site survey, I didn’t see a lot of support for this. I’m open to ideas though.

I think the weight by category is a good idea but really difficult to pull off with our current infrastructure. If we develop the functionality this off-season that runs a custom report based on user-provided parameters, I could see adding this.

When in that position today, I sort by the position I need most and then look at the player’s $ for a sense of how they do in the other categories.

  17. Chaz says:

I think Wilson Ramos is missing

    • Sky

      Sky says:

Is this a kidnapping joke or…

      • Either that was a great joke or you were looking at 4/8 when the Nats are off…

  18. Dick Pole says:

No Cardinals are showing up on Hittertron today.

  19. Jon says:

Hittertron isn’t loading for me anymore. Is it currently down?

  20. Hondo says:

Hittertron thinks Wil Venable is a starter.

    • @Hondo: it has him at 60% start potential. that’s a bit too high but i think all subscribers are aware venable isn’t an everyday player.

      • Hondo says:

@Rudy Gamble: Oooh-gotcha. Thanks,I thought %st had something to do with swinging strikes or something.
Operator error- you don’t want to see me use a hammer.

  21. NowIKnowWhyCramHatesYou says:

  22. David says:

Rudy, I am sure you have or will, but if not…please update the DFS Bot for the 5-5 slate to include the CO-AZ pitchers. Both Matzek and Collmenter are making their scheduled starts…

    • Thanks – updated as part of today’s projections (and updated col/ari prob starters for next week)

  23. Rudy: Josh Harrison is mistakenly listed as SS eligible in Yahoo! leagues.

    • thanks – should be fixed w/ tomorrow’s run.

  24. Joey Jo Jo Jr Shabadoo says:

some weird issue wherein 6/5 doesn’t have KC players listed, as if they aren’t playing; unless i’m missing something they are playing.

    • Joey Jo Jo Jr Shabadoo says:

@Joey Jo Jo Jr Shabadoo: it was noted in the today section once 6/5 became today, and fixed. chi chi screwed it up somehow.

  25. Anthony says:

I log on here. Buy a subscription. Pay an extra $4 for acess to data…Finally get to the page I’m seaching for. Look at hitting summary for Todays games (6/6/2015) and Browse MIA vs LAD games…And see that the wrong pitcher is being shown. C. Rusin is starting this website shows otherwise. Whats going on?

    • The starting pitchers update every morning by 10am EST based on a data feed. Rusin was added this morning. I then try to review in the late morning for any announced changes like today’s cashner / despaigne swap.

  26. Dick Pole says:

Why is Joey Gallo’s probability to start at 50%? The Rangers are going to play him nearly every day while he’s up.

  27. hello, I wanted to ask if it is possible to change where you put the money values? On my smaller notebook the ads cover up the value amounts under the new added stats. I become accustomed to looking at a player’s money value to make my transactions over time. Thanks again for all you do.

    • @sashasdad12303: That’s odd – what is the OS on your notebook? We removed the ads in the right sidebar this preseason but maybe they still remain on some OS version? I know they don’t appear on my iPhone. And the $ is the 9th column in – the ads cover that much of the table?

  28. Davis Caraway says:

Would it be possible to add a column for NL/AL so that I could filter by league?

Also, it would be amazing to have a $ value column that didn’t account for position eligibility. I’m in a single catcher NL-only league, and I don’t want to overvalue catchers, especially when comparing a catcher to an outfielder for a utility spot.

    • AL/NL is a great idea but there’s just no room left to add it. I would just put in the 15 team abbreviations of the league you are looking for separated by |. Otherwise, I’d just eyeball the leaders and ignore those from the other league..

Daily Hittertron have no position adjustment. The Weekly $ have a mild catcher adjustment.

  29. sashasdad says:

I wanted to respond to previous comment for the gentleman that had issues with players picked up, but they never played. I pay attention the the % number by the player’s name on if they are projected to start that day myself, as I do not know all players on every team, and if they platoon, etc. I do vouch for the hittertron as it’s gotten me in the finals and do very well with it. If you are newer to the site’s charts, just give it some time and you should see some results. It was spot on with Calhoun and Aybar past few days. Takes the hitter’s opposing SP & what park they are playing at it seems to me mostly. Definitely helps give you a leg up on those guys in your league that just like the bigger names..Helps you to find the diamonds in the rough.

  30. Chris says:

Every week you tell me to play Wilin Rosario, and the guy only plays like 2 days. I’m sure he has some sweet matchups, but playing time should also factor into the hittertron. No more Wilin Rosario!

  31. Scott says:

MLB.com has Vidal Nuno facing Jon Gray tomorrow (8/4), not EOlmos vs. Rusin.

  32. Jesse says:

Miguel Sano is 3B and SS eligible on Yahoo.

  33. Leroy says:

Weekly Pitcher Planner/Streamonator not working. Looks like page is not loading.

    • Can you try emptying your browser cache as the pages are up?

      • Tom says:

@Rudy Gamble: A lot of my tools pages have been hanging as well, seems to be when trying to get log-in info from CoinTent. I did clear my cache, still having issues. Both IE & Chrome.

  34. Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:

solarte party doesn’t qualify as SS in yahoo.

  35. Pine Tar Incident says:

Bit of a time warp problem (morning 9/3). When I click on “tomorrow” it goes to 9/3. 3-days goes to 9-5. Trying to plan my moves for the “real” tomorrow (9-4).

Thanks for opening the SON and Hittertron up, the loading issues were getting pretty awful. Can’t live without it though.

    • @Pine Tar Incident: can you reset your browser history? i’m looking at it now and it’s set at 9/4 (been like that for 2 hours).
