Hittertron Info

Razzball Hittertron:  This tool is designed to identify attractive short-term hitter pickups and to determine when to start/sit hitters on your roster.  (For Daily Fantasy Baseball games, check out DFSBot)  The higher the $ value, the more attractive the start.  Hitter-Tron projections rely on Steamer Rest of Season projections as a foundation and then adjust based on several game-specific factors that include quality of opposing starting pitcher, hitter’s performance vs. the handedness of opposing starting pitcher, park factors, whether the game is home or away, and predicted batting order spot (for Runs, RBIs, and Plate Appearances).

What Is The Expected Accuracy Of Hittertron Projections?:  Please see the Razzball Ombotsman for correlations betweeen the Hittertron projections and actual stats.

Filtering Results:  You can filter multiple fields at the same time.  The text fields below the column headers enable several methods for filtering the data.  Here are some examples:

Function Symbol Example Explanation
ANY MATCH ‘B’ in Pos Typing B in Pos will filter to any player with 1B, 2B, or 3B eligibility.  Type in more details to filter further – e.g., “1B’, “1B, 3B”, etc.
OR | 2B|SS Requires exact match on both sides – so 2B|SS returns anyone who has 2B or SS eligibility but not anyone with 2B/SS, 2B/3B, etc.
NOT ! !OF All players who do not have OF eligibility.
NOR ! | !1B|OF All players who do not have 1B eligibility NOR OF eligibility.  Just use the ! once.
GREATER THAN > >30 in $ All players whose $ is greater than 30.  Does not work for Date.
LESS THAN < <30 in $ All players whose $ is less than 30.  Does not work for Date.
GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO >= >=30 in $ All players whose $ is greater than or equal to 30.  Does not work for date.
LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO <= <=30 in $ All players whose $ is less than or equal to 30.  Does not work for Date.

Position Eligibility – 20 Games in last season for ESPN and ’2 Catcher’ formats.   5 Games for Yahoo.

$ Values – A hitter’s projected stats for the game are multiplied by 150 and then valued for a 12-team MLB league using the ESPN/CBSSports roster format (13 hitters, 9 pitchers) and a $260 team budget.  While the $ values would vary for any other league format, we would expect the rankings to remain relatively the same.  The ‘$U’ estimate is position-neutral and is the value to use when looking at players for Utility slots.  We have found this is the key $ value for ‘Daily’ roster changes.  Position-adjusted $ can be found in the Weekly Hittertron and in the Hittertron projection on the player pages (accessible by clicking on the player name).

%Start – This is the estimated percentage that a player will start in a game.  This takes recent playing time into account including the handedness of the pitcher for platoon hitters.  It does not take day-to-day injuries into account – either for the injured player or the fill-in player.  Recently called up players who are not undisputed starters may take a couple weeks before their playing time estimate matches reality (until then it’s underestimated).  More info can be found in this post.

Own%  Based on ownership within the Razzball Commenter Leagues which consists of 84 12-team MLB leagues using the standard ESPN roster format.

What does it mean when guys like Konerko, for example, have a blank space instead of a value for the day?

Hey Rudy, want to give my thanks for the Hitter Tron (and SON). They’ve been very important in my success!

Felt like throwing a suggestion for the offseason.

I find myself in the playoffs frantically overanalyzing a lot of hitters for certain days and in doing so have to open up a lot of tabs and flip back and forth.

Is it possible to bring in a compare tool? Maybe fill out a max of 10 names that would just contain your basic hitter tron info like $ value, opposing pitchers, home/away.

It’d save a lot of time and make it much easier to comb through several hitters.

    • @Eddy: You’re welcome, Eddy. In the name field, just separate names with a | and it acts like an ‘or’. So Venable|Gyorko will show both batters in the results. I don’t think there’s a character count so should work w/ 10 hitters. Let me know if that works for you.

FYI, hitter projections for 4/3 don’t include any players for the Oakland Athletics.

    • Good catch. Was a minor glitch in handling guys who recently were called up (Elias). Fixed.

quick question(probably a dumb one)…i’m trying to do side by side comparisons using the “|” (i.e. Rizzo|Hosmer). I cant get that to work. not a big deal just thought id point that out. or am i totally doing something wrong?
    thanks.

    • @faustocarmona: yeah, some weird thing happened in the last update where it no longer wildcards for the or function. So type in Anthony Rizzo | Eric Hosmer and it will work.

Any chance that start times could be added to the Hittertron, as well as Streamonator? Would be super useful for daily fantasy sites where you have subgroups of games broken up by Early/Late Afternoon/Late.

    Thanks!

    • @beepboopbeep: will consider it. i have the information. just not a lot of room on the page to add another column.

Excellent daily tool Rudy. Thank you for the time you put into it and for assisting with followers as well.

I am currently on “FanDuel” (didn’t know about draftkings). Is there a preference you would suggest to sort hitters by considering a 35k salary cap? I use $ value majority of the time as a reference. Curious if the original ranks might be a better tool, or if you have other suggestions.

    Thanks Rudy!

    • Thanks. Sorting by $ is the best way for now. Working on a solution that will be a lot more useful.

@kexin: tillman is pitching tomorrow for the Os not norris etc. please fix

      • @kexin: The hitter-tron was delayed a day because of a delay w/ the data feed. All updated.

You may want to check the ownership tab, as it doesn’t appear to be able to sort by right now.

hello, there seems to be an issue w the line-ups page?… is this an issue w baseballpress side of site? either way i just wanted to see if others are experiencing this, or if anything had changed recently. i sed to be able to click on any player in the line-up and get their projections, but today it goes to a blank page. i appreciate all the help. thanks, vinny.

Does this mean I should bench Justin Upton for Yelich Sunday, April 20?

    • @MB: your call. Upton’s swinging a hot bat but Yelich’s got a juicy matchup against Maurer (beavan injured).

How is Hunter Pence ranked #15 on this list for 4/23 when he’s 0-14 career with 0 walks vs. Tyler Chatwood?

    • @BigDeal: #1 – @ Coors, #2 Pence is good, #3 Chatwood is not good, #4 14 PAs not significant.

      • BigDeal says:
        (link)

        @Rudy Gamble:

Oh ok. Thanks – that makes sense. So how many PAs do you count as significant? Are past history of hitter/pitcher matchups insignificant then? I generally tend to base who I start based mostly on the matchups and then look at hittertron. Am I doing it wrong?

        • from the research i’ve seen, hitter-pitcher matchup data is not very predictive because the samples are too small. by the time you get a large sample, the skill levels of the hitter/pitcher have changed too much. there are definitely cases where a hitter seems to own a pitcher and vice versa (Goldschmidt/Lincecum). I ignore matchups and go straight to hittertron.

            @Rudy Gamble:

Ok – cool – thanks. I’ll try this out. Where have you been all my life, Rudy!?

            • @BigDeal: Waiting for you to notice me like the cute but not hot girl in an 80’s teen movie.

I am struggling with 3B in 12 team roto league on Yahoo. Zimmerman is on my DL. I’ve been riding Uribe, but he’s gone cold now. My waiver options are horrible also: Semien, Gillaspie, Reynolds, Holt, Romine, Murphy, Valbuena, Callaspo, Johnson, LeMahieu, and Francisco. Should I stick with Uribe, someone else, or go off HitterTron for each day?

Does hittertron/streamonator update daily? Wondering if I should wait until a certain time each day to set my daily lineups by them.

    Thanks!

Oh, it seems that the rankings are not updated for today(6/16) meaning that “tomorrows projection” is actually for TODAY.
        sorry for the confusion.

Is there any way to individually customize this feed for the categories pertinent to our own leagues? I’m thinking of something that could be saved as a browser cookie, then remembered each day going forward. Or something that allows us to weigh categories more/less heavily (so if I’m crushing the roto league in HR, additional HR don’t have much value to me so I would weigh them less). The data is very valuable as it is, but I’m pitching an idea for a way to make it more valuable – something I’m sure many of us would pay for.

Or if it’s already possible and I just can’t figure it out, then I suppose I’m a fool and need some guidance.

    Thanks,
    Matt

    • @ThrowCoachMatt: There isn’t currently a way to customize the daily tools per league format. In the recent site survey, I didn’t see a lot of support for this. I’m open to ideas though.

I think the weight by category is a good idea but really difficult to pull off with our current infrastructure. If we develop the functionality this off-season that runs a custom report based on user-provided parameters, I could see adding this.

When in that position today, I sort by the position I need most and then look at the player’s $ for a sense of how they do in the other categories.
