Hittertron Info

Razzball Hittertron (aka Hitter-Tron):  This tool is designed to identify attractive short-term hitter pickups and to determine when to start/sit hitters on your roster.  (For Daily Fantasy Baseball games, check out DFSBot)  The higher the $ value, the more attractive the start.  Hittertron projections rely on Steamer Rest of Season projections as a foundation and then adjust based on several game-specific factors that include quality of opposing starting pitcher, hitter’s performance vs. the handedness of opposing starting pitcher, park factors, whether the game is home or away, and predicted batting order spot (for Runs, RBIs, and Plate Appearances).

What Is The Expected Accuracy Of Hittertron Projections?:  Please see the Razzball Ombotsman for correlations between the Hittertron projections and actual stats.

Filtering Results:  You can filter multiple fields at the same time.  The text fields below the column headers enable several methods for filtering the data.  Here are some examples:

Function Symbol Example Explanation
ANY MATCH ‘B’ in Pos Typing B in Pos will filter to any player with 1B, 2B, or 3B eligibility.  Type in more details to filter further – e.g., “1B’, “1B, 3B”, etc.
OR | 2B|SS Requires exact match on both sides – so 2B|SS returns anyone who has 2B or SS eligibility but not anyone with 2B/SS, 2B/3B, etc.
NOT ! !OF All players who do not have OF eligibility.
NOR ! | !1B|OF All players who do not have 1B eligibility NOR OF eligibility.  Just use the ! once.
GREATER THAN > >30 in $ All players whose $ is greater than 30.  Does not work for Date.
LESS THAN < <30 in $ All players whose $ is less than 30.  Does not work for Date.
GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO >= >=30 in $ All players whose $ is greater than or equal to 30.  Does not work for date.
LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO <= <=30 in $ All players whose $ is less than or equal to 30.  Does not work for Date.

Position Eligibility - 20 Games in last season for ESPN and ’2 Catcher’ formats.   5 Games for Yahoo.

$ Values - A hitter’s projected stats for the game are multiplied by 150 and then valued for a 12-team MLB league using the ESPN/CBSSports roster format (13 hitters, 9 pitchers) and a $260 team budget.  While the $ values would vary for any other league format, we would expect the rankings to remain relatively the same.  The ‘$U’ estimate is position-neutral and is the value to use when looking at players for Utility slots.  We have found this is the key $ value for ‘Daily’ roster changes.  Position-adjusted $ can be found in the Weekly Hittertron and in the Hittertron projection on the player pages (accessible by clicking on the player name).

%Start - This is the estimated percentage that a player will start in a game.  This takes recent playing time into account including the handedness of the pitcher for platoon hitters.  It does not take day-to-day injuries into account – either for the injured player or the fill-in player.  Recently called up players who are not undisputed starters may take a couple weeks before their playing time estimate matches reality (until then it’s underestimated).  More info can be found in this post.

Own%  Based on ownership within the Razzball Commenter Leagues which consists of 84 12-team MLB leagues using the standard ESPN roster format

    Hi Rudy,

Have you written a how to use this article you could direct me to? On the face it seems pretty simple, but there seems to me some subjectively in application.

For instance, I have to choose between Avisail Garcia, Mike Napoli, and Alex Gordon for a utility spot today in a head to head league where i need hitting help across the board. Garcia has a much higher $u ($20) than Napoli or Gordon who are both at $12. Do you always roll with the highest value, when there’s a distinct split like this? Or since the data is so thin for Garcia, do you go with a more known quantity like Napoli?

    • @Jake: It’s not a deceiving face – it is pretty simple. But while there’s a lot of rigor to create these projections, it is far from an exact science. I do not follow these values blindly for my roster decisions but they do play a major role. (Note: for determining values on players from different positions, use the $UT value)

When looking at those three hitters today, it makes sense that Garcia is the best rated. He’s facing the worst pitcher of the three (Correia), at home, and in a good park (White Sox park). Gordon is facing Scherzer while Napoli has Jimenez. I agree w/ the Garcia, Napoli, Gordon order given the matchups.

      • jake says:
        (link)

        @Rudy Gamble:

ARGH! I think I outsmarted myself with starting A Garcia over Napoli based upon the Hittertron. Just seems to be difficult on having that much confidence in Garcia’s projections just yet with so little data.

Which side of the trade do you want on an 8 team AL only H2H league?

Gray, porcello, pujols for price, navarro, encarnacion?

How much you factor in a potential trade of price to the NL?

        • @jake: Yeah, thought of you when Napoli hit that HR. It is true that Avisail doesn’t have the longest track record (< 500 PA in AA/AAA, 250 PA in MLB). At least guys with significant minor league playing time have something to project from.

I like the Price/Navarro/Encarnacion side. Price is a better SP than Gray. EE is better than Pujols (with the nice 1B/3B eligibility). Porcello is a wildcard – I’m not a huge fan of him but he’s clearly ownable in this format. He’s worth more than Navarro but I always feel like you can get more SPs in AL-only.

I don’t think Price is getting traded this year. I’d rather take the chance that he does vs. not make the trade (assuming your league DQ’s guys who are traded to the other league mid-season – i hate that rule btw)

          • jake says:
            (link)

            @Rudy Gamble:

I was thinking the same thing. The only thing that gave me pause what I had Gray’s projections for Gray in mind which are nearly identical to Prices. But if I look at steamer, grays more projected like Kluber or Straily who I already have. Seems like a no brainer, thanks for the insight.

I think yahoo”only” leagues DQ trades across leagues. You’re right, dumb way to do it. We just did AL-only because we could only found 8 guy at work will wanted to play. It’s s cool way to make it more of a challenge.

    Hi Rudy, great work.

It would be great if the performance of the tool was included in the columns. I don’t know how it could be done, but let’s say yesterday the hittertron got “70% correct” (whatever that would mean). The past week it got 65%, etc.

It would help us factor how much faith to have in the tool on at various timepoints maybe. I’m looking at Werth’s low rating today vs Alex Wood. He’s 4/8 off the lefty, which Werth pounds. I have to choose between him and Marte who is ranked much higher.

    • I have done some testing but it is hard to run automatically. The results vary by stat (I know for pitching that Ks are the most accurate). The net of any projection test is that it is only slightly predictive for small samples (like 1 game). Closer to 10% than 70%. Of course, using 8 ABs of hitter-pitcher matchup is around 0%. My one piece of advice when comparing hitter $ is understanding where their value comes from. Marte is higher than Werth b/c of SB which are streaky. In general, I am more likely to bench a SB guy than power guy unless he’s been on a good streak.

    • @Aubrey Plaza’s Pillow: It is gone on purpose. We found the page was just taking too long to load since it had over 2,000 rows. We were seeing cases where the page would freeze before the table loaded. So we’re just going to stick w/ the today/tomorrow/next 7 day pages and you can see the full 7 days on the each player’s player pages.

Is there any way we could pick any 1 of the next 7 days? My league has continuous waivers so hitter tron data for tomorrow is useless. Really need to see 3,4,5 days in advance.

@Rudy Gamble: Is this temporary? It did take a while to load, but having hittertron more than a day in advance is so awesome for charting weekly moves in one sitting instead of checking in every day. I hope this isn’t a forever thing.

Hittertron is an awesome resource, thanks for creating it.

        • thanks for the feedback. we’re still deliberating on whether to add this back. any page that takes long to load impacts the speed of all our other pages and we do not want to introduce pagination.

Out of interest what numbers are going into hittertron to give Michael choice a $25.0 day? I’m presuming his minor numbers? Are they at all weighted and how long do you see it taking for his output to normalize? This site is the mutts btw!

    • Yes, they are based on his minor league numbers that are adjusted based on minors-to-majors translation factors. Done by Steamer. Steamer likes Choice as a hitter (can see his baseline here – http://razzball.com/player/11376/Michael+Choice/) and then add a bad SP (Beavan) in a good park (Texas).

    • @kexin: this page updates by about 10-10:30AM EST. Those were yesterday’s games you were looking at. You can tell by the ‘Date’. You just need to go to ‘Tomorrow’s’ games if that’s the case. All updated now.

Hey Rudy. Can you clarify how the Hitter-Tron ranks its players and how I should interpret its rankings? Springer is #11 today, $34.50. I’d love to plug my shiny new toy into the lineup, but wondering how a struggling rookie with a week of MLB service time gets ranked so high? Thanks.

    • @Corey: The tool ranks the 5×5 value of all hitters on active rosters based on Steamer’s projected rest of season stats and adjustments for park and opposing pitcher. Steamer is bullish on Springer’s power/speed combo which drives up his value. While Kazmir’s a solid pitcher, Springer’s value increases b/c the game is at home, solid park, and the fact Kazmir’s a lefty.

Springer does have minor league stats which are used to create his rest of season projections. Rookie projections will have more margin of error than veterans. I don’t fully believe in Springer being an elite MLB talent right now and would suggest people temper expectations. But Hittertron doesn’t fudge things – it reports back based on all the components/factors.

      • Corey says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble: Excellent explanation. Maybe it’s going a little wonky with Springer, but I like what it can do for my other daily roster choices. Thank ya, sir.

Does hittertron/streamonator update daily? Wondering if I should wait until a certain time each day to set my daily lineups by them.

    • Updates daily – usually no later than 10:30 AM EST. it’s projected for the next 7 days (plus through next Monday on Fri-Sun). There are only major shifts if there is a last minute change to today’s SP or someone moved to DL

  21. SMLV1 says:
    (link)

Why so low on Choo facing Skaggs in LAA?

    • @SMLV1: Choo not good vs lefties, away game, pitcher’s park, harder to steal off lefties

  22. I ended up making an improvement today on the $ estimation that better reflects:
    1) Total games that week – e.g., Jose Bautista leap-froggred Mike Trout b/c the Blue Jays play 7 games and the Angels play 6. Instead of averaging their $ for each day (which ignores # of team games), I now calculate all player’s stats for the next week and create new $.

    2) Since so much of weekly value for fringe players is based on estimated Playing Time AND the playing time estimation I use for fringe players is based on 30 day start % vs. RHP/LHP, I added an adjustment for players who did not play much in the past month BUT started a couple games in the last week. This helps for a player like Chris Getz who got called up last week and is assuming a starting role. It also helps for hitters who are starting temporarily due to injury and will continue to do so for the next week. But it also means a guy like Jeff Bianchi who filled in for Segura early last week may be overestimated into the following week. Figure the positives outweigh the negatives here.

When click on an individual player, can you tell me how the H is being calculated? For example, Aoki has a 1.3 for hitter-tron projections vs Iwakuma today. But Aoki is not that good against righties, he hasn’t been good at all on the road (I think only a hit in 50% of his road games) this year, and he hasn’t really had any success against Iwakuma. How did the 1.3 get calculated?

    • The base for H starts with the AVG vs RHP / LHP. steamer has him at .304 which is admittedly bullish given he hit below that in 2012/13. Adjusts down b/ on road and some combo of Iwakuma and Safeco.

      • Lester says:
        (link)

        @Rudy Gamble:

Is there any way to sort by H? So I can see from high to low for the day?

        Thanks for the website.

          • Lester says:
            (link)

            @Rudy Gamble:

Hmmm – I guess I don’t see it. On the hitter tron projections, H isn’t one of the available columns to sort by. I see % start, AB, R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG, OBP, and OWN.

            • Ah, yeah. Not enough room. Just sort AVG. same difference with slight impact from AB.

  24. Ryan says:
    (link)

Looks like the hitter-tron is missing a handful of players today. I’m not seeing guys like Victorino or Brandon Moss among others.

    • They are all in there. Are you sure you didn’t apply a filter?

  25. Smalls Killer says:
    (link)

So it automatically figures the best plays of the week instead of sorting by $? Today is the 1st time I noticed no values under the money

  26. Something’s screwed up – will be fixing it tonight

  27. Lester says:
    (link)

I know the site gets updated sometime in the morning, but are there any adjustments made once the daily lineups come out? I’m curious about the AB projection.

    • @Lester: I don’t have a lineup data feed so do not make any gameday adjustments based on batting order. But the PA estimates are based on recent games so they do reflect recent batting order spots. Projected BB/HBP is then deducted from PA to get to AB (using hitter and pitcher BB rates).

      • Lester says:
        (link)

        @Rudy Gamble:

I’ve been meaning to ask – how is projected average calculated? What’s being considered in calculating it?

        Thanks!

        • @Lester: Steamer projected AVG adjusted for SP handedness + opposing pitcher + park factor + home/away factor.

  28. Rudy — If a player starts playing better (or worse) than normal for him and there are indications that it’s not just a brief hot streak or slump, how long until the HT starts to take that into account?

I’m interested in the answer in general, but in specific terms it regards Pollock who has been playing well and is a former 1st-round draft pick (in real MLB) but who gets mostly negative ratings that I’ve seen.

Also, is there a certain rating that would convince you not to start a hitter even if there were no alternative? For example, if I carry only one C or one SS on my roster and on a given day he’s rated -12, would the conclusion be to bench him to avoid the possible 0-for-5 night? Or would you still opt to start him at a weak position?

    • The Steamer ROS projections take recent activity into account but it’s relative to several years of baseline data. Most of the time, hot streaks where a player outperforms their previous stats are mirages. But it would take a while before a player who takes a giant step in skill (think Jose Bautista a few years ago) to fully translate into his projections.

For Pollock, his .300+ AVG looks like a BABIP mirage. Given his K-rate, looks more like a .260-.270 hitter. He didn’t show signs of power in the minor leagues. His speed was solid in the minors but wouldn’t seem to translate to more than 15-20.

I think his Hittertron value look pretty good. He’s going to be a below replacement player on the road in tough parks against RHP (like @NYN this week) and look very good against LHP at home (where he’s got a great park). Everything else mostly in the $0-$10 range.

  29. Jesse says:
    (link)

Rudy, just wondering how handedness throughout a game is taken into account. Does Hittertron assume that the starting pitcher will be in for 5-6 innings and therefore 2-3 AB’s will very likely be against the starting pitcher? Then what? It seems like in the later innings, hitters with big platoon splits will usually either a) face a pitcher that is opposite their handedness preference or b) be taken out for a pinch hitter

What I’m getting at: does Hittertron overvalue players with big platoon splits facing their favorite handed pitcher, if it assumes that they’ll face the same quality of pitcher and handedness throughout the game?

    • @Jesse: Hittertron assumes 3 PAs against the SP and then the rest of the PAs facing relievers. I currently assume that the RHP/LHP ratio a batter will face in relief matches the RHP/LHP mix I have in their ROS projections (where I model RHP/LHP PAs based on factors like projected playing time and the team’s lineup).

So I don’t think Hittertron overvalues (when facing SP of better split)/undervalues (when facing SP of worse split) guys with big platoon splits.

Note that I’m using average PAs from last 30 days so player’s likely to be pinch-hit for have less projected PAs available for hitting against relievers.

    Hey Rudy,

I love the tools you’ve developed for the site, thank you so much. When it comes to hittertron, though, I was wondering if you could give any advice on how to interpret the data here through some more Grady-Little-esque hunches. For example, HT keeps ranking, say, Jed Gyorko very high, but if you just take a look, you can see that the guy is totally scuffling at the plate.

Hope this doesn’t sound like a criticism, I do realize that HT presents data and that there is no way to put “gut” in as a variable.

    • I hear you. Gyorko has been rough this year. In general, I don’t think ‘hot’ or ‘cold’ streaks have much impact on future performance but benching long term slumpers until they have shown signs of life makes sense. I also think SB come in bunches and it is worth discounting speed guys who haven’t been running.

    morales #23 today. gillaspie #247.

gillaspie (lefty) hot, 3 HR in last 3 games at home CHA. @ CLE today facing righty kluber.
morales ZERO HR, batting .237 over last 15 days, but at COORS.

don’t know whether to run with the hot-hand, or @coors…?

ever thought of projecting hot-hands, and see how they measure up to actual?

    • @simply fred: i have on my long-term queue an analysis that tests whether a player’s recent performance (hot, cold, neutral) has any predictive power over and above their hitter-tron projection. my assumption is no on average…though there will always be positive cases (just that a shitty hitter who appears ‘hot’ will, on average, be shitty today assuming average pitching/average park).

i’m taking Morales over Gillaspie – although i’d feel even better if he was facing an RHP (better rates hitting lefty).

    (link)

Hey, I’ve been trying to decide who to slot in my line up tomorrow, 8/27. The guys in question are: Brian McCann, Brandon Moss, Oswaldo Arcia and Stephen Vogt. Moss and Vogt are up against righty Brad Peacock, which usually would be a no-brainer to start both, but Moss has been struggling for over a month now to the point where I’m not even comfortable starting him against Peacock. He’s 2 for 11 in his career against him with 7 K’s, oddly enough. At first, I assumed McCann would be the easy choice to sit, as he’s facing, by far, the best pitcher of all my batters in David Price, but I looked at his career stats against him and they come out at a .417 BA and 3 home runs in 15 AB’s, or something along those lines. McCann has been hitting lefties better all year. So between McCann and Vogt, i’m leaning towards McCann base on the history, but Vogt can slot in at a UTIL spot and he’s been a good consistent hitter all year against righties. As for Oswaldo Arcia, he is facing newly promoted Liam Hendricks of the Royals, who is a righty…Arcia has been crushing righties of late and I don’t see how that should be any different against a fresh meat bum from triple-A. So, all in all, I’m leaning towards benching Moss, but I know that could turn out to be a mistake. Whadaya think? Help please!!!!!! Vogt/Moss v. Peackock, McCann v. Price, or Arcia v. L. Hendricks????
