A’s Trade in Beat-Up Blanton For Cost-Efficient Gio
Well, Blanton’s seat is still warm and here come the rumors of Gio Gonzalez’s promotion. Figures, a couple more bad starts and some illegal body shop in Oakland would’ve gutted Blanton and pimped out his carcass for a sweet ride. Yo, put some five-star Momos on Blanton’s legs and let’s bling out his grill! (EDITOR’S NOTE: The last guy to give Blanton a rim job was Michael Lewis.) Lest we forget the sad fate of Eric Plunk whose ulnar collateral ligament was repurposed as a remodeled Chevy Impala hood ornament. So what’s the most exciting thing about Gio Gonzalez’s impending callup? You can actually pick him up right now in Yahoo. Weird! So the question boils down to whether or not you should pick him up. Let’s see, he Ks people, he’ll be in a pitcher’s ballpark, he’ll be facing a sad sack division and people aren’t familiar with him. Of course you pick him up! (Why would you make me use an exclamation point?) Only thing, do you expect Volquez and get Cueto? Perhaps. But you keep getting in these relationships because you need the eggs. Anyway, here’s some more players to buy and sell in fantasy baseball:
BUY
Matt Holliday - I don’t know how cheap you can get Holliday, but there’s some news that he might be traded. If the Holliday owner in your league is getting worried, exploit him. Holliday’s in the prime of his career; his value won’t be squashed by a trade.
Eddie Guardado - I know, Everyday Eddie is a total schmohawk, but CJ Wilson is skating on thin ice. (As if there’s any other kind of ice in Texas — oofa! BTW, Austin is one of my favorite cities. Not sure why you needed to know that, but you did. It’s called sharing! If I had said I had tacos there that made my crap my pants, that would be oversharing. There’s a difference.)
Kevin Youkilis - I mentioned Youuuuuuuk in passing in my top 100 for the 2nd half when I said he was my dark horse for AL MVP. He’s still hitting well and, when he collapsed last year, he wasn’t hitting well in June let alone halfway through July.
Damaso Marte/Jonathan Broxton - These guys are the closers until further notice. There’s no reason you shouldn’t treat them as if they are Capps and Saito. If you can get them on the cheap, why not? (Bee tee dubya, next week at this time Corpas might be next to Broxton on that list.)
Jason Bartlett - Will be back next week. If you need steals, you can do a lot worse. I almost dropped Keppinger for him in a deep league, but someone beat me to it. Damn you, Fantasy Phenoms! But I do have Tulo returning, so there!
Carlos Zambrano - Not sure who remembers the ‘pert who I chastised a couple of months ago for trading Johan for Granderson and Ervin. Well, this time I traded with him (BTW, you can almost see his nuts in that picture). You would think from his trade history I would’ve received Arod for Iwamura, but no. I got Big Z for Jermaine Dye and Kevin Kouzmanoff, who I’m actually pretty high on for the 2nd half (not huffing high, but high nevertheless). I need starters in that league (I’ve lost Rich and Shawn Hill, Wainwright and Harang, in that order. Though it could be argued that I lost Harang some time in May.), Kouz was on my bench and Dye was a waiver wire pickup in the beginning of the year who I can hopefully replace with another waiver wire pickup, so the trade was what it was.
SELL
David Ortiz - Homered yesterday in his first minor league rehab game. Time to move him. This move is not without its risk. He could return and perform well for the final two months. Obviously his “well” is better than most players’ “well.” However, it’s going on a year and a half that he’s been banged up, it’s been a while since he’s hit like the slugger that caused a whole nation to buy Big Papi pillowcases from Montpelier to Saugus, the Sox will need Papi in the playoffs so they’ll baby him with days off and after a guy hits a home run on his rehab assignment his stock is at its highest.
Joe Blanton - Usually I’m all over pitchers entering the NL. I can’t get behind picking Blahton up.
Takashi Saito - He’s done. Or not, but you shouldn’t be waiting around for him. Roster space is precious this time of year. Drop him if you don’t have DL room.
Scott Olsen - Walking too many hitters and his upcoming schedule is a minefield.
Kyle Lohse - Doooode. Seriously. I have to explain this?
Hank Blalock - See Lohse or 1/38th of an inch above.
Ryan Zimmerman - I’m just not that into him.
J.J. Putz - You know what time it is, boys and possibly one girl? It’s time to figure out what the future holds by pulling out my voodoo bloody rooster ala Angel Heart. (I almost wrote bloody cock, but you can imagine why I was hesitant to write bloody cock. There’s some things you don’t joke about; a bloody cock is on top of that list because the list is called, The Bloody Cock List of Things You Don’t Joke About. But I digress.) Looking into my bloody rooster I see Putz returning, getting a few saves that aren’t always pretty, he reports pain, the Mariners shut him down because they’ve got the worst record in the league already locked up and see no reason to risk losing their Putz.

Im tempted to drop Harang for Gio in a league. Yes, I know I should have dropped Harang a while ago but I’m afraid that he’ll come back with guns blazing or whatever it is zombie-looking muhfux do when they turn the corner.
Unfortunately the campus wi-fi is blocking Y? fantasy sports now. I’m guessing everybody rocking stattracker was choking the bandwidth. Jerks.
@p0rk burn: On one hand, Harang could come back and be dominant. On the other hand, he’s reporting lingering pain. If you had a third hand, you can’t drop anyone else?
It is muhfux, btw.

@Grey: any idea why Ellsbury is not stealing bases of late? Also, I was counting on David Wright & Markakis to steal bases for me this year, and they are been very very disappointing, why? Wright had 34 last year.
July 18th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Why is Saito not on the DL yet?
@Zebo: Rudy has a theory on some players whose game isn’t stealing bases that applies here. Someone like Carlos Lee, Berkman, etc. they are not base stealers by trade, they just happen to be good base runners. So if they steal 20+ one year, you shouldn’t count on it happening every year. Wright and Markakis are in the similar mold, they’re good from 15 to 30 steals, but you can’t count on 30. Both should get to 20 though.
Ellsbury is a speed guy and could explode for 15 steals in a month. I wouldn’t worry about him.
July 18th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
@Grey: I just dropped Tulo for Gio in a league where I sorely needed starting pitching. Thanks for the advice.
A useful feature to do later in the second half would be a list of injured & struggling players who are likely to be shut down if their teams fall out of contention. It might help us sell those guys before their value is gone.
@Steve: Dodgers organization is messing with you.
@Shogun: Cool, and I’ll keep it in mind.
July 18th, 2008 at 1:05 pm
agree with everything, except for Zimmerman of course. I think Faith Evans put it best - http://www.lyricsfreak.com/f/faith+evans/never+gonna+let+you+go_20052478.html
@Denys: Faith Evans puts everything best. She’s like Mary J.’s Not Gon Cry with tears.
July 18th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
Y’all, anything wrong about giving up Danks/Derrick Lee for Hawpe/Hunter?
July 18th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
@Grey: drop Kuroda for Gio Gonzalez? Kuroda has Coors coming up before Washington Nationals sweetness. Gio sounds like a pokemon character.
@BKK: Yeah, it’s not a great trade for you. Danks isn’t bad and Lee is the best one in that trade. I’d don’t get it.
@Zebo: Kuroda is already pitching well in the majors, I wouldn’t switch those two. “Gio sounds like a pokemon character.” — ha!
July 18th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
@Grey: I started to write a paragraph or two but then realized a picture would be better. Check the forums. Thanks.
@p0rk burn: Cool, I responded:

July 18th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
@Grey: It’s really Lee for Hunter/Hawpe, because I can go pick up Maine off waivers. The guy I’m trying to help has Garko and Belliard in his utility spots and I figured this is an upgrade. I tried to get Vlad but he wouldn’t part with him. He’s not going to win the league, just trying to keep him out of last at this point.
July 18th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
@BKK: Don’t make moves out of compassion. This is fantasy baseball, not the Salvation Army! If you benefit and coincidentally he is helped, great - sleep well at night. But if you are undecided and getting warm fuzzies by helping him tips it in the favor of pulling the trigger, you need to man-up and do a cup check.
@BKK: Danks has looked a lot better than Maine, but it sounds like you’re winning this league outright. I say let the guy suffer, but you do what you do. I, however, would not do that trade.
July 18th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Oh man I think that Lohse is a very cheap buy. Check out his peripheral stats. His K’s aren’t pretty, but that’s about it. Why would I sell him now if I couldn’t get more than he’s worth, especially if every fantasy player out there thinks exactly like you do? Wouldn’t that make him an ad hoc buy?
Example… I put Lohse on the block. Player A offers me Shitty H. Shortstop for him and a half bag of Skittles. I accept the trade and turn around and flip the Skittles for a bag of Tender Vittles, but I’m stuck with shitty while the other guy keeps a usable 4th starter. If everyone did indeed Zig like you’re thinking, why not buy him for a Zag and take the Lohse side of the trade while his value is still relatively low?
July 18th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
@IowaCubs: Did you just say something?
@IowaCubs: Yes, apparently it seems like you just did.
@IowaCubs: Hmm… really?? …because it seems like you just made absolutely no sense.
@IowaCubs: Go home, Phil. It’s quittin’ time and it’s Friday and you still gotta go to the IMAX and buy Dark Knight tickets before they’re sold out.
@IowaCubs: Good point. Later, Phil.
@IowaCubs: Cause your Vittles are going to explode in your mouth and contaminate everything they touch. Then you’ll be rushed to the hospital and you’ll need to have your mouth sewn together like the girl on The Real World: Los Angeles circa 1993.
July 18th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
@p0rk burn: @Grey: I hear you. I gots to do something, as of the ASB, I have a 634 pt lead on 2nd. I can pretty much coast to the end. I’m bored. Need to definitely find me another league next year.
July 18th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
@p0rk burn: @Grey: I just reread the comments. I am not trading with him. I’m just “spending his money”.
July 18th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
The Little Exploding Yellow Paper today on Yahoo! said Marte might get traded at the deadline, since the Pirates aren’t likely to pick up his 2009 option. It would make sense, given that they’re not in any sort of “race,” nor have any particular impetus to “win.” They can let some other schmohawk close till Capps gets back.
Moral of the story: As soon as that irritating blabbermouth Exploding Piece of Paper disappears, I’m shipping Marte out.
@Baron Von Vulturewins: Ugh, ain’t you the bearer of Exploding Yellow Paper news that no one wants to hear?
July 18th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
@Baron Von Vulturewins: That yellow irritating blabbermouth Exploding Piece of Paper thing has screwed with my teams this year more than my marriage has.
July 18th, 2008 at 3:08 pm
@Grey:
This site needs another “Lohse sucks” reference as much as it needs another Real World refernece.
Your Friend,
Puck
July 18th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
@Grey: Shit. As per further up, I’m in the process of trading FOR him…
July 18th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
P.S. I was playing pinball at a coffee house in downtown Des Moines about five years ago, and this guy asked me where the restrooms were, interrupting my pinball game and making me lose a ball. I told the guy where to go, and then realized that it was Puck from Real World San Francisco who was in town for some reason.
I am totally awesome.
@IowaCubs: Rudy and I once went to sushi with The Miz. Excuse me while I pick up that name…. Oh, wait, that’s not really a name.
@Steve: I see something about Saito. Could you repost your question?
July 18th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
@Grey: My bad. Was in the Dunn post. Have a trade under way sending Bourne and Mariano for his Burrell and Marte. His only other closers are Fuentes and F Cordero.
@Steve: I want Burrell and Marte in that trade in a vacuum. But, obviously, if I need steals, the other side is decent.
Try and make it for Cordero though, just in case. He’ll probably be fine with it since F-Cord just gave up a kagillion runs in a third of an inning last night.
July 18th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
@Grey: Have re-sent asking for Cordero. Bourne rides my bench and even though I’m hurting a bit for steals I will try and find em elsewhere. Bartlett is available and he would only be bumping Yunel from my SS spot.
July 18th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
@Grey
From yesterday
Don’t think the Miggy for Chipper and Broxton deal is going through. He posted today that Miggy is going to be huge in the 2nd half, apparently numerous guys are trying to get him.
He did however, say “unless someone blows me away with an offer” so I sweetened the Loney and Broxton to Chipper and Broxton. Let’s hope he bites.
Also, the Kaz for Morneau seems like a done deal. He didn’t look at it for 5 days so I took it down and tried the Miggy deal. He asked today if I was still interested in that so at least I get one of the two done.
Either way I significantly improve, thanks.
July 18th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
@Grey: The best thing about the Exploding Yellow Pieces of Paper (or E.Y.P.P.s!) is that sometimes you click on it and it says, “Cole Hamels is starting against the Astros on Tuesday, July 1st.” And sometimes you click on it and it says, “Cole Hamels’ left arm was sheared clean off yesterday in a freak farming accident.”
They really need levels of E.Y.P.P.s — maybe different colors? — to signify how f’ing serious the news is.
July 18th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
@BVV
Ha
Hamels arm wasn’t really sheared off was it?
July 18th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
Do you rank these guys in this order?
Carmona, Danks, Maine
July 18th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
I proposed my Burrell/Torres for Youk…any chance he accepts?
July 18th, 2008 at 6:28 pm
Greinke is getting beat up…this hurts
July 18th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
@Grey: is this the beginning of the end for Jeremy Guthrie? He got hit hard today by the Tigers. Also how does Tim Hudson give up 5 ER to the Nationals? It’s a bad night for my pitchers.
July 18th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
@everyone: Kuroda is getting destroyed, omg, my pitchers suck.
July 18th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
@Grey: i am panicking now. Do I drop Aviles for Stephen Drew?
July 18th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
@Grey: How about one of those handy yes-no “Who you should drop for Gio G” lists.
I’ll start the bidding at Johnny Cueto.
@Baron Von Vulturewins: Yeah, then they can have red for really serious and you can contemplate whether or not to look like when your girlfriend is taking an EPT.
As for everyone else, WHAT?! Every single pitcher I have just got Greinke’d, including Greinke. UGH!
Anyway…
@Zebo: I want Drew.
@Baron Von Vulturewins: I want Gio! Stat!
@Baron Von Vulturewins: Why aren’t you answering people?
@Baron Von Vulturewins: Where’s Rudy?
Okay, I’m a little drunk and really pissed at my pitchers. Greinke! Why?!
@Nick: I would.
@Baron Von Vulturewins: I don’t understand why Greinke abandoned me. I needed him.
@BKK: Danks, Maine, Carmona. But there’s a lot dependent on matchups there.
@Baron Von Vulturewins: See, Greinke was going well for a while, then this?!
Okay, I’m fine.
July 18th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
@Grey: Alright, thinking about trading Ortiz…what 1B do I target for Ortiz only, if you could post 3.
Also Drop Guthrie for Gio ? He is not really doing much for my rotation as he is the weakest.
****EVERYONE, Gio might not be called up. It’s a speculation pick at this point like Headley was before he was called up.
@Nick: I wouldn’t drop Guthrie and have not. I dropped Scott Olsen in one league. That was it.
Prince? Adrian Gonzalez? Derrek Lee? Morneau? I mean, you want a top guy or no deal.
***EVERYONE, in fact, the A’s just called up Lenny DiNardo — he may be the guy to replace Blanton.
As I said in the post, …”here come the rumors of Gio Gonzalez’s promotion. ” He hasn’t been called up. Just rumors. But there were rumors of Headley and Bruce and so on before they came up because it made perfect sense. Just like Gio’s callup would make perfect sense now.
July 18th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
SONOVABENCH: Garciaparra, 3 for 3 with 2 homers.
July 18th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
@Grey: He’s come back with his F Lewis, Pat and F-Cord for my Mariano and Rios.
Eh.
July 18th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
@Grey: pick up Graciaparra?
@Steve: No more Bourn?
@Zebo: For who?
July 18th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
@Grey: Garciparra > Steve Drew > Aviles > any SS eligible schmohawk?
@BKK: I told Rudy that you got Sonovabenched with Nomah and Rudy said, “Why is Nomah on someone’s team?”
@Zebo: I’d want the upside of either of those two.
July 18th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
@Grey: Apparently not. Have said I will throw in Bruce instead of Bourn. I will throw him in as well as if I have to.
July 18th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
@Grey: drop Aviles and Kuroda to pick up Garciapara & Drew?
@Zebo: I wouldn’t drop Kuroda, I’d just pitch him at home or Petco. I’d go with Drew over Aviles.
July 18th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
@Grey: Cause these where my choices for a back-up SS.
http://razzball.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=531&hilit=nomar
@BKK: Yeah, 16-team leagues are tough. I may pickup Nomah if Tulo doesn’t return soon. Come to think of it, I may have to pick him up even if Tulo returns.
July 18th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
@Grey: The worst part about it was I just had this gut feeling - after an extended break he’s hit a homerun in his first game back twice this year. I went with headley and his 7-game hit streak which ended tonight, instead.
July 18th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
My only hope is the Dodgers score another couple runs and Kuo gets a win and Broxton gets a save…with a couple K’s thrown in for good measure and my wounds will heal a little. GO NOMAH!!!!
July 18th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
@Zebo: I think given the choice I’d take S. Drew over Nomar. He’s bound to get hurt. I just didn’t have a bunch reasonable choices and Nomar hopefully buys me some time.
July 18th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
Well, I got a save out of the deal and Nomar didn’t do anymore damage on my bench.
Plus 18K’s in 17IP for my pitchers, Can’t complain.
July 19th, 2008 at 2:11 am
@Grey: Now he’s pulled out of the trade altogether. Fuck me. Should I go back to asking for Marte in order to get Pat?
July 19th, 2008 at 3:16 am
Scratch the above. Since he seems to have a boner for Rios, what do you say to my Rios, Mariano and Bourne for his Pat, McLouth and F-Cord?
Or have I developed too much of a crush on Pat the Bat?
July 19th, 2008 at 7:35 am
C Joe Mauer
1B Albert Pujols
2B B.J. Upton
3B Ryan Braun
SS Jhonny Peralta
OF Lance Berkman
OF Matt Kemp
OF Josh Hamilton
UTIL Josh Willingham
Carlos Pena
Adam LaRoche
Is it worth it for me to move Berkman and Hamilton for Reyes and Atkins…giving me a legit SS and Moving Braun down to an OF position…or should I stay put…lately all these guys have cooled off a lot and I’ve been getting spanked a lil bit
July 19th, 2008 at 7:48 am
If you look at Holliday’s splits throughout his career, he has twice as much production at home as he does on the road. So if he does get traded (highly doubtful), his owners should definitely be worried about a decrease in production across the board.
July 19th, 2008 at 8:21 am
@Grey: Steve Drew goes up against Nomar today @Ari, which is hitter friendly. So which one of these two do I start?
@Steve: Yeah, step away and look elsewhere.
@danimal35: I like this Berkman and Hamilton for Reyes and Atkins for you, but Peralta a decent SS, but not so good at Utility, so where will he go?
@Scott: I said his value won’t be squashed. He’ll take a bit of a hit, but let’s see where he could go: Yanks? Hmm… Well, that’s not bad. Angels? He is batting .333 in Angel Stadium. Cards? He has hit well in St. Louie. 5 HRs in 29 at-bats and .483. Okay, fine maybe the Mets, they could use an outfielder. Well, the Mets lineup wouldn’t be bad. How about Shea? Shea’s gotta be bad, hmm… .349 in 43 at-bats. Maybe he won’t do well in a pennant chase… He hit 12 HRs last September at a .367 clip.
I wasn’t just looking at Home and Away Splits. Actually, I never mentioned Home and Away splits above. Holliday’s value will not be squashed. Will he lose some value? Sure. He’ll go from a 1st rounder to a late 2nd rounder/early 3rd. As I said above, exploit owners cause there’s people like Scott that think Holliday’ll become simply average.
@Zebo: Ugh, Billingsley v. Haren? Take Drew.
July 19th, 2008 at 10:26 am
@Grey: I’m still looking to bolster my pitching and was looking to move Morneau Dunn Kendrick and Garza for Hamilton and Joba. Hamilton would take Dunn’s OF spot obviously, I have Thome to replace Morneau at Util, and I havn’t started kendrick all year(Kinsler). Is Joba worth the upgrade over Garza? I realize i might be overpaying a bit but again, offense is stacked and im last in whip and era. Do I look at making that move?
July 19th, 2008 at 10:50 am
If I owned A-Rod it would cost you at least Iwamura, Kobayashi(who I’ve been pimping forever) and Igawa. Just to let you know, it was -20 the day I was goaded into that pic so there is no way on earth you could ever see my nuts!
@Cowboy: Morneau Dunn Kendrick and Garza for Hamilton and Joba is not a good move at all. Way too much for those two.
@Tim aka the glue sniffing other party: I think if I had Ervin Santana, I could’ve saw your nuts.
July 19th, 2008 at 11:05 am
@Grey: Yeah thats what i figured, I’m just pretty desparate for pitching. Feeding off of your it’s now or never write up a couple days ago I was looking at diluting Pujols a bit to help me out. Pujols, Morneau, Dunn and Garza for Miggy, ASoriano, Halladay and Liriano….does that should like something you might be interested in?
@Cowboy: I like that trade, but you’re moving a lot of parts, which is always a risky proposition.
July 19th, 2008 at 11:27 am
who has a better chance of getting the closer job and staying more successful with it - Corpas or Guardado?
July 19th, 2008 at 11:31 am
And what’s the likelihood of Owings rotation spot becoming Scherzer’s once the dude is back from DL?
@Denys: Guardado, only because I HATE (sorry for caps, but I needed the emphasis) working off trade speculation. I should actually do a post about the trades of the past that never went through. Like Giambi going to the Angels two years ago.
re: Jobacum — Actually, that makes sense because his innings have been limited already with injuries and MR-stint. I think Owings is in trouble.
EDIT: Cuz.
July 19th, 2008 at 11:51 am
Intrigued by this Nomah discussion. I have Alexei covering short since Tulo is on the bench. Is it worth running Nomah out there as it looks like, according to CBS standard H2H points in my league, they are both trending upward with Alexei earning a bit more in more at bats. Yet, as with Iannetta, I am learning more at bats doesn’t mean better - short term.
Drop Alexei for Nomah while waiting out Tulo?
July 19th, 2008 at 11:57 am
@Grey: Yeah, I agree, I know im being aggresive but im in the top 2 in every offensive category, but last in whip and era, 5th in K’s, and 4th in wins so you have to understand my need for not just good pitching but exceptional. If I pulled this off I would have a rotation of Peavy, Hamels Halladay Zambrano and Billingsley with Rauch and Broxton at RP, and the possibility of swing Cbill to RP if Liriano begins to deal. And with 60 plus games with a group of cowboys like this, I think I can do some serious damage..
@BSA: Short term, you can run Nomah out there. Tulo should be back by Monday and by then Nomah will probably be on the DL.
@Cowboy: Yeah, it would be a tremendous staff, but I think you can move separate pieces and get more value. Like say, going after just Joba.
July 19th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
time to sell (drop) h. matsui?
July 19th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
anyone have thoughts on a hamels for utley trade???
July 19th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
@Chase: I’m waiting to hear whether surgery is needed, but the answer is probably yes regardless of that answer. Consider best case scenario: he won’t need surgery but will need substantial time to recover to the point of playing again. It could seriously be the end of August before he plays in the majors at which point his fantasy value is pretty much worthless. I have him sitting on the DL in one of my leagues but thats more because I don’t gain anything by dropping him than the thought that he is worth something. If you cant stash him (or even if you can) I’d start looking for a replacement.
July 19th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
My Duchsherer and Mike Gonzalez for his McLouth?
July 19th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
@SaltyBiscuits: The Y? note the other day summed up my take on Mikey G “Gonzalez has been perfect in save opportunities since assuming the closer’s rule on June 17th”. Yeah sounds great, except until yesterday he had 3 saves. So now he has 4 saves in over a month (yes, I know that includes the ASB, bite me). Dookie might keep it up, but he’s just an arm. I like McLouth in the deal even with the risk that he falls (continues to perform?) below his early season stats. He’s on a nice little spell in July.

Anyone have any advice on how to beat the “super team”? I’m solidly in second in an 11 team league and only 10 points behind first, but in the past 30 days the leaders worst metric is 9. He’s got 5 11’s and they’re all over the map (K’s, HR, runs, ERA, WHIP and SB).
I’m starting to see signs that the low end teams are giving up as one guy didn’t have the heart for negotiation and gave me Ryan Howard, Oswalt and Parra for Ellsbury and Hamels but even that one hasn’t been that hot with Roy out. I guess just keep picking on the last place guys?
@Jonah’s Whaler: I want Utley as long as I have the pitching depth to withstand losing Hamels. And even if I don’t, I’d try and make it happen for Utley.
@knighttown: Where can you get points? And even better what categories can you catch him in?

@Grey: would you drop any of Laroche, Nomar, Thome, Chris Davis for Chad Tracy right now? Chad is en fuego.
@Zebo: Bye, Nomah, bye.

Short week + relievers only + Heath Bell = complete fecking WHIP and ERA disaster. So need Sunday starters. Already picked up JoJo - how do you like Parish @ Tampa or Garcia v SD?
July 19th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
@BSA: I currently own both Alexei and Nomar. Nomar has been more productive on an at bat basis over the last month but he hasn’t played the whole month with only 34AB’s to Alexei’s 85. Not sure its a great move, I probably wouldn’t even have rostered him if Alexei were SS eligible in Y! but he needs one more game where he plays that position. But if you can go grab him (or some other serviceable SS) again when Nomar goes down, then probably, no biggie.
@Steve: I’d give Garcia a whirl.

@Grey: Safe to drop Saito? Six weeks takes us pretty much to the end of the season and Furcal is in my DL slot…

nice woody allen reference.
what kind of #’s do you see luke scott putting up for the remainder?
July 19th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
@Steve: I’d probably drop Saito. Even if there aren’t any setbacks it’ll take another week after those six for him to go through rehab appearances. His old ass probably won’t be rushed back into the closer role either. See if the above mentioned Guardado or Corpas are available to stash for future saves (if you didn’t grab Broxton already that is).

Does anyone think Dye will start tomorrow ? He was hit in the leg by a pitch tonight and left the game early…
@Steve: Yeah, I think you should drop him.
@natacocha: Thanks for noticing. Say another 10 HRs and a weak average.
@Nick: Bench if you have decent alternatives.

If the guy will go for it, trade K-Rod to get Utley and pick up Marte, Percival or CJ off waivers? Guardado is also available.
@BKK: Yeah, definitely.
July 20th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
@Grey: Was all going well with Garcia until he gave up a dinger to the pitcher!
JoJo? Eh.
July 20th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
@Steve:
Yeah, round three of my “spot start a mediocre pitcher against the Nationals” expiriment was an epic fail. Enjoy the waiver wire Jo-Jo. Summary, 3 starts (D. Cabrera, Guthrie, Jo-Jo), zero wins and shitty metrics.
July 20th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
Would you take Aubrey Huff or Carlos Delgado over Conor Jackson? Or should I just stick with CoJack?
@Nick: I’d take Delgado right now.

@Grey: Could you touch on your thoughts of Carpenter? I was considering dropping Bush for him…I’m lookin’ for lighting in a bottle…
July 20th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
@Cowboy
He may or may not be lightning in a bottle, hoping he is.
Hitting 90’s on the gun and says his arm feels good, either way he’s worth a shot if you’re dropping Bush.
July 20th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
@Cowboy: @BigFatHippo: FWIW the flaming yellow yahoo news thing said that Bush was gonna only pitch at home…so i already dropped him for Carpenter…I say well worth the risk
@Cowboy: That’s a flier worth taking.

Grey what do you think about a sell on Dempster? A RP all these years that arm has to gas sooner or later? (Course not yesterday).
