Russell Martin trade

Postby peter » Tue Aug 19, 2008 9:02 pm

14 team, 5x5, h2h, keeper league (keep 8). This team's already clinched a playoff spot. Trade deadline is this weekend.

I'm trying to move Russell Martin for two reasons: 1) I should be able to get more for him than he's giving me and 2) I already have McCann and don't want to end up using 2 keeper spots on catchers.

I've been offered Lackey and Olivo for Martin and S. Torres. I like the deal, ostensibly, but I wanted to see if anyone had any reservations about Lackey. While he's been effective in his last few starts, he hasn't been his previous bad-ass self. Yeah, he's coming off injury - but the positive side is that his arm hasn't logged a lot of innings yet this year. I'll still have 2.5 closers (I don't count Grabow because Capps is coming back, and Mike Gonzalez is only 0.5). I can't count on Verlander carrying me through the playoffs. Nor can I genuinely consider keeping him when there's only 8 keepers.

Thoughts?

OF - Mike Cameron
OF - Lastings Milledge

Turns out the Lackey owner wants Torres and Broxton. I don't want to lose both. I can try countering with just one of those two.

I agree, you don't want two catcher keepers.

I love Lackey and agree that his innings have been kept a bit lower this year, but that's liable to change in the playoffs, if you're considering him as a keeper. Not saying it's a deal-breaker, it's just something to consider.

If you want me to look at your team, post the team. Don't post a link to another site where the team is.
Have you given me all the info I need to judge your team? The number of teams in the league is a good start for the big overall questions.
Is your league H2H? Roto?
I don't know who's on your waivers. Don't just ask me who you should pick up. Give me names to choose from.
If you only have one team, post your team in your signature with the league parameters.
I don't know every single matchup for next week, so if you want me to choose a player for the following week and you think the matchups are important, tell me who they're facing.

I'm not too concerned about playoff innings effecting his keeper value - but that's a good point. Even if it where more worrisome, I'd rather have Lackey than be forced to keep 2 catchers. Not to mention Lackey can help more this year than 5 more HR and 5 more SB from Martin. I've countered with Martin and Torres for Lackey and Olivo - didn't want to give up two closers.

Personally, I'd give up two closers for Lackey. He's a difference maker and, without injuries, a top five pitcher. And, yes, injuries are a concern, but they are for all pitchers.

Turns out I didn't have to. Lackey's owner was satisfied with getting just Brian Wilson.
