Segura

Postby MStark » Sun May 12, 2013 11:53 pm

How many league champs will owe their success to Jean Segura? Is anyone else is hitting .359 with 6 HR, 10 steals and 20 runs scored? For fantasy purposes, has there been a more valuable bat so far?

If he can keep it up but it is a long season and I don't see him being this valuable all year.

Everyone thought Tabata was for real after his insane start two years ago as well.

I didn't say he's "for real" or will keep it going the whole season...

Just that for the first 1/5 of the season, I think he may have been the most productive bat in fantasy baseball.

In terms of value, I don't think there's any contest. I imagine most folks got him at around the 20th round or so.

But...

If you (insanely) picked him first overall, he'd have justified your pick. He's putting up the kind of stats that put league champions over the top.

I have him in my 10 team league. Picked him up off waivers. Really glad to have him since Asdrubal has underperformed thus far. My question is, do I keep both Asdrubal and Segura? Do I trade Segura at an all time high value? Or do I trade Asdrubal and have Segura as my starting short stop all season?

That's a tough one.

If you expect Segura to "regress to what he is" then that'd involve a pretty disappointing rest of the year because he'd have to slump to bring his numbers in line.

Or he could "revert to what he is" and simply produce at his projected rate for the rest of the season.

Or he could continue to over-perform, to one extent or another.

I'd take a look at what you need. If steals are a concern, keep Segura (even if he slumps, the speed should be there).

And of course, it never hurts to put him on the block to see what you can get. Maybe someone else will make the decision for you.

The problem is that people are forgetting that Segura was a top-20 prospect as recently as 2012. The kid's got talent and can hit. Is he like this? Doubtful. However, his speed will stay and he'll, therefore, always have a high BABIP, thus inflating his BA and OBP.

To say he ill regress "to what he is" is partly true. However, "what he is" is a pretty darn good player. I've seen some Reyes comparisons thrown around and they seems somewhat appropriate.

I'm trying but I don't have any takers as of yet. Still worried about Segura coming crashing down once his hot streak is over. Also, Asdrubal can't hit this poorly all season can he? Now isn't exactly the best time to sell on him given his value. Now if he were hitting like normal it would be a good idea but his value is insanely low.
