2013 Overhyped

Postby SwaggerJackers » Sun Feb 03, 2013 3:41 pm

So who do you guys see as this year's overhyped "sleeper" picks already across fantasy sites? I'm seeing a lot of sites pouring on the love for:

Goldschmidt
Estrata
Frazier
Eaton
Segura

These are players who aren't flying under the radar and will probably get drafted before you planned on sneaking in for the kill.

I would add

Medlen
Chapman
Machado

These are guys that I won't be owning this year. I might miss out on something but I just don't seed the love that they are getting

seriously? a 19 year old holding his own in a pennant race doesn't scream "stud" to you? while, i agree with you, he may be 2 years away, but the kid's going to be a monster.

Machado will be a stud, but given heis so young he probably will be drafted too early in 50% of leagues relative to what his stats will be. Making the jump that young even as talanted as he is, is a tall task. Those paying attention will remember last years overhyped gem, Brett Lawrie and maybe stay away though. There is no worse feeling than being in a keeper league, holding onto a minor league guy for a few years, excited you're about to get paid off for your good work and then seeing a "Sleeper" post on 98% of fantasy sites, you just know its over.

I like Machado as one, Frazier as another. One guy I'm worried about as well, in the later rounds is Sal Perez. He's a guy I am targeting in late rounds to plug in at C and move on, but with everyone and their mother writing a sleeper post I can see already he'll be taken too early. My backup plan is to wait another 30 picks and graeb lucroy..

Long-term he could be great but many are ranking him ahead of veterans like Pablo this year. Why risk taking a 19 year old so early. Way too much risk with not enough gain.

Agree with Sal Perez. Was really liking him as well but man are people jumping on him earlier than I would have thought.

Todd Frazier is one I'm a little worried over now. last I read the Reds could sign Scott Rolen again. "IF" Rolen is signed that could cut into Frazier's playing time.

Josh Rutledge.
last year in joining the Rockies he made the jump from AA. his 20.1 LD% was nice, but he only had 30.8 FB%. he only had 3.8 BB% in AA, and then 3.1 BB% with Colorado.
he has eligibility at 2B and SS, but I don't think he is someone I would want as my starting 2B or SS to begin the season.

Will Middlebrooks.
last year he had 21.4 % HR/FB. Bill James projects him to have 29 HR in 2013.
he also had 4.5 BB% with 24.5 K%.

Why Estrada? For where his ADP is, I would gladly take him.

Rutledge is another good one.

I put Estrada on the list simply because I've been seeing his name show up on multiple sleeper posts across the interwebs.

Machado has actually gone undrafted in 2 Mock Draft Central mocks I've done recently. I don't expect that to happen in an actual draft.

Bruce Rondon...especially in new dynasty drafts, this guy is going way too high...he has high upside but in reality he probably won't be the closer this season...Dombrowski is just taking pressure off the other guys in the pen like Al Al and Phil coke, who are probably a safer bet to be closing games for the tigs.
