Everyone knows it is very difficult to make gains in your ratios late in the season.These are the 20 teams that made the biggest improvements in the last 33 days of the season in each category.

Many of these teams had terrible numbers through August, so they had a better chance to make gains, but still might not move up in the standings. There are several examples of teams with better numbers having late success, though. Wilmington Womp Womps raised their batting average from .269 to .275, and went from scoring 5 in the category to 10. Rex Brothers, Where art thou? gained 4 points in the standings when they raised their average from .267 to .273.

Pitching categories are tougher, and will also depend on how many innings you have at your disposal. Blue Heaven jumped from 6 to 9 points when they lowered their ERA from 3.90 to 3.61. Gonna B Lame gained 3 points as they improved their WHIP from 1.27 to 1.23.

Of course,I don't know if any of these teams were making a conscious effort to improve their ratios, or if it just happened in the normal course of play.

Were the ones under 900 IP going into Sept. paying attention or did they back into good ratios?

I'd say those teams mostly just lucked into a good month. Several didn't come close to the 1000 IP minimum, so the improvement didn't help them anyways.
