Jay Bruce - Overrated?

Postby kevo252 » Tue Aug 07, 2012 6:26 pm

I traded for this guy back on April 28th. He is hitting .232 since then. I know he is one of the streakier players in the sport, but is it time to face the facts and say that this is who he is? I have seen him ranked at high as the 25th overall hitter on some sites. I just don't see it. I know I can't get value like that in exchange for him in my league. Obviously 30 HR hitters have value, but is it time to admit that he is no different from Kubel, Rasmus or WIllingham (or worse) at this point in his career?

I feel like I over-draft him or trade for him every season and he always lets me down. What are the chances of him finishing on a high note?

Kubel is 30 years old with a career high of 28 HR's and only one season over 25 HR's
Willingham is 33 years old with a career high of 29 HR's and three seasons over 25 HR's
Rasmus is 25 years old with a career high of 23 HR's and no seasons over 25 HR's
Bruce is 25 years old with a career high of 32 HR's and two seasons over 25 HR's

I'm not sure how you can really compare Bruce and Rasmus, both 25, to guys in their early 30's. Kubel and Willingham are at the peaks of their careers and will most likely decline from here, whereas neither Bruce nor Rasmus has even reached the beginning of their prime years yet.

Bruce is obviously not performing as well as many expected, though he has the ability, but 25 is way too young to consider what he's doing now as the best he's got. There's no telling if he'll get on a massive hot streak, but he's definitely shown signs of life lately.

I am not arguing the upside. But this season, from May on, Bruce has basically been Adam Dunn lite with a lot less power. In yearly formats, he is overrated. It is going to take 6 exceptional weeks for him to justify his pre-season ADP. Given his .230 August batting average with zero HR through 8 games, I don't see it happening. He is hitting .217 in last 115 at bats since Votto went down. I at least excepted him to improve on his HR total from 2011. The guy has been nothing but a disappointment.

Oh, I agree there, he's done nothing to justify how high he was taken by pretty much everyone, including me... I just don't think he can be placed on the same level as guys that will be fading when he has nowhere to go but up... But would I rather have Kubel the rest of this season? Definitely yes.

I took him in the 4th round in one league and he's basically warmed my bench the entire time since May. I should have dropped him long ago, but I have the same syndrome with Bruce that Trey has with Uggla.
I like sports with balls in them.

I want to drop him so bad, but you always risk missing 10 HR in a 20 game span with Bruce.

It's a difficult syndrome to get rid of, sadly... Tim Lincecum says hi, too!
