Looking for wisdom in all the wrong places

Postby stevelandr » Thu Apr 15, 2010 12:52 am

Allright then. I'm a 20+ year fantasy football guy sticking his proverbial toe in the deep fantasy baseball waters. So far its fricking great and Grey mucho grassyass for your site and insights.....I would have been picking my ass instead of a team without them. I'd like your opinion of my team, strengths (if I have any) and weaknesses (I know my outfield sucks) and where you think I need to focus on making moves and anything you think I should look out for.

I'm in a 10 team Yahoo 10x10 H2H league. Here's the spec's:

Roster Positions: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, Util, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, DL, DL
Batters Stat Categories: Runs (R), Hits (H), Home Runs (HR), Runs Batted In (RBI), Stolen Bases (SB), Walks (BB), Strikeouts (K), Errors (E), Batting Average (AVG), Slugging Percentage (SLG)
Pitchers Stat Categories: Innings Pitched (IP), Wins (W), Losses (L), Complete Games (CG), Saves (SV), Hits (H), Home Runs (HR), Walks (BB), Strikeouts (K), Earned Run Average (ERA)

Here are my boyz...........

C Yadier Molina
1B Adrian Gonzalez
2B Chase Utley
1B,3B Jorge Cantu
SS Troy Tulowitzki
OF Jayson Werth
OF Jay Bruce
OF Colby Rasmus
OF Scott Podsednik
OF Carlos Beltran
3B,OF Chase Headley
1B,2B,3B Martin Prado
1B Carlos Pena

SP Roy Halladay
SP Cole Hamels
SP Carl Pavano
SP Ricky Nolasco
SP Dallas Braden
SP Kevin Slowey
RP C.J. Wilson
RP Matt Thornton
RP Francisco Cordero
RP Kevin Gregg

I know my OF's are a weakness but pickin's be slim for big sticks. Here are some of the guys on the free agent list as of now;
Jeff Francoeur, Franklin Gutierrez, Kosuke Fukudome, Adam Jones, Carlos Guillen, Josh Willingham, Delmon Young.

Anyway thanks for your help and the great site!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd own Adam Jones over Beltran, Headley or Rasmus, but Beltran I'm assuming is in the DL. It's actually hard to tell what your active team looks like without bench players accounted for. I wouldn't be too concerned in this shallow of a league, if you want to win it, all you're going to need to do is fight the waiver wire pickups quicker than others. I would say your OF is the weakest area on your team though.

If you want me to look at your team, post the team. Don't post a link to another site where the team is.
Have you given me all the info I need to judge your team? The number of teams in the league is a good start for the big overall questions.
Is your league H2H? Roto?
I don't know who's on your waivers. Don't just ask me who you should pick up. Give me names to choose from.
If you only have one team, post your team in your signature with the league parameters.
I don't know every single matchup for next week, so if you want me to choose a player for the following week and you think the matchups are important, tell me who they're facing.

Run immediately to your waiver wire and get Adam Jones and Franklin Gutierrez. Drop Podsednik and Matt Thornton.

For a 10 team league I actually think its your pitching staff that is your weakness. You are really counting on Hamels and Nolasco to have much better years than they did last year. Having Halladay in a league that counts complete games is pure GOLD!

Thanks Grey. You said it was hard to read without knowing who my active players are versus bench so assuming all are playing and neutral matchups my starting line-up has been:

C Yadier Molina
1B Adrian Gonzalez
2B Chase Utley
3B Jorge Cantu
SS Troy Tulowitzki
OF Jayson Werth
OF Jay Bruce
OF Chase Headley
UTIL Carlos Pena

BN Martin Prado
BN Colby Rasmus
BN Scott Podsednik
BN Carlos Beltran (DL)

SP Roy Halladay
SP Cole Hamels
RP Matt Thornton
RP Francisco Cordero
P Carl Pavano
P C.J. Wilson
P Dallas Braden

BN Ricky Nolasco
BN Kevin Slowey
BN Kevin Gregg

2 Questions.....1) Given my line-up and offensive categories, what category killers should I be looking for in my free agent pick-ups? I've been looking for a power hitter (HR's and SLG% without a ridiculous SO rate) but have had little luck. 2) I have to start two RP's but have taken the strategy that I don't try to win that category. Instead I will start Thornton to pick-up additional SO's and clean up my ratios. Does that make sense or I'm I smoking something bad???

You advised I Pick-up Adam jones and I will. I jusr saw Jayson Bay come on the FA wire. DShould I target him given his slow start?

Thanks Grey!

Nolasco/Slowey should also be pitching instead of Wilson, Pavano, or Braden.

How the eff does JBay become waiver wire material?!?
