In a league where I get to keep 6 keepers, 2 pitchers, 2 batters, 2 of either. The picks count in the round before they were taken last year, FA pick-ups count as 17th round picks.

The positions are: 2C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, MI, CI, 5 OF, DH, 5 SP, 2 RP, P. H2H, tradition 5X5 scoring. The draft is 28 rounds for a team that can carry 28 players + 3 DL spots. 12 team league.

So it's a deep league. Because of the way it is set-up, I really need to look for VALUE at the draft spot, more than just keeping the dominant players. Also, no one can keep their 1st rounders (no more Reyes? say it ain't so!!) and 2nd rounders become 1st rounders, etc. Multiple FA pickups build toward the round before, 3 FA keepers would be the 17th, 16th and 15th rounders.

Here's my (2nd place finish) squad, with the round they'd take up next year (one round earlier than I grabbed them last year, all 17th were FAs):

Carlos Ruiz - 27th
(Phi - C)

Yorvit Torrealba -17th
(Col - C)

Prince Fielder – 1st
(Mil - 1B)

Casey McGehee – 17th
(Mil - 2B,3B)

Mark Reynolds – 14th
(Ari - 1B,3B)

Everth Cabrera – 17th
(SD - SS)

Joey Votto – 6th
(Cin - 1B)

Eugenio Velez – 17th
(SF - 2B,OF)

Andre Ethier – 9th
(LAD - OF)

Bobby Abreu – 7th
(LAA - OF)

Carlos Lee – 2nd
(Hou - OF)

Carlos González – 17th
(Col - OF)

Drew Stubbs – 17th
(Cin - OF)

Matt LaPorta – 23rd
(Cle - 1B,OF)

José Reyes – 1st X
(NYM - SS)

Carl Pavano – 17th
(Min - SP)

Wandy Rodríguez – 20th
(Hou - SP)

Matt Cain – 10th
(SF - SP)

Kevin Correia – 17th
(SD - SP,RP)

Homer Bailey – 17th
(Cin - SP)

Jonathan Broxton – 8th
(LAD - RP)

Brian Wilson – 15th
(SF - RP)

Matt Thornton – 17th
(CWS - RP)

Kevin Millwood – 17th
(Tex - SP)

Scott Feldman - 17th

Ryan Rowland-Smith – 17th

Brett Anderson – 17th
(Oak - SP)

Roy Halladay – 4th
(Tor - SP)

Robinson Tejeda -17th
(KC – SP)

Kevin Slowey – 13th
(Min - SP) DL

I think the only really obvious keepers are Reynolds in the 14th, CarGo in the 17th and Wandy in the 20th (value!!).

Which leaves me with 3 holes to fill. There are some intriguing picks in there, like LaPorta in 23rd? I don't know where I will draft yet (we decide after the Super Bowl, and I don't have to declare keepers until after that). If I go 10th or later, I probably keep Prince. But other than that, Brett Anderson? Votto? Ethier?

Let me know what ya'll think.

I'd keep Reynolds, CarGo, Wandy, Votto, Ethier and Cain. Instead of Cain, I could see Halladay. My thought is Halladay is high, but at least you have an ace. He'll go around there anyway and then you can focus on top hitters which you need. But I can also see taking Cain, then taking hitters and hoping to get value picks for your pitchers, which is probably the route I would take. Depends on how confident you are drafting pitchers.

Thanks Grey, I was thinking along those lines myself. I am very confident drafting pitchers, and even better at recognizing breakout seasons and grabbing pitchers off the waivers. I won Wins, ERA, WHIP and K's last year.

Unfortunately I ignored my own best intentions and drafted Webb in the 4th last year... balls. After losing Reyes and Webb I still managed to take the regular season and place 2nd in the playoffs. Not too shabby.

Halladay in the 4th is certainly solid, we'll see where Cain is looked to get drafted in the pre-season, then I'll decide.

Thanks again for your help!
