What are your closer drafting rules?

Steals/Saves Ain't Got No Face. Closers and speed talk. Which MRs are moving in? Which schmohawk speedster is getting steals at MI?

What are your closer drafting rules?

Postby rightwingjedi » Tue Mar 25, 2014 5:00 am

Every year I only draft 2 closers and it seems to work out ok. It just seems with the first come first serve WW I always snag a closer eventually.

Anyone else do this?

On a side note I never finish above 5th in saves but.......

Can you post the 2 closers you have drafted in recent years? It seems kind of lucky, to me, but who am I to judge? I draft about 3 closers and 3 hope-to-be-closers in every draft since my first (the year of the closerpocalypse).

I typically draft 2 closers as well, occasionally will draft a very low end 3rd if I'm "forced" to with no other hitters I want left on the board. I finish in the top 3 of my 12 teams leagues every year. As the season goes, if I have the opportunity to grab a guy who's next in line when the official closer goes down, I will do that if I'm not giving up anyone who's performing well. But, at draft time I typically do 2. I cannot imagine allocating 6 roster spots to RP's.

I typically draft one decent closer (ranked around 10) and two lower end ones (20-25ish). Try to avoid the real dregs (27-30).

When drafting stoppers I pretty much go by K-rate. Below 1K/IP and they're off my board. Low WHIP and fastball velocity are the secondary considerations. I don't care much what team they play for, bad teams get saves too.

I'd rather draft an elite setup guy in the last couple rounds than a dirt closer. Especially if they are more talented than whoever is manning the 9th for their team.

You don't tie up 6 roster spots the whole year or even after the first 2 weeks of the season. You do it so that you have Lindstrom before everyone else does (between 1:05 and 1:25, yesterday, he was gone in 8 leagues...good luck if you have meetings mid-day)
