Starlin Castro Called up ~ Per ESPN Deportes

Postby Lucc » Fri May 07, 2010 7:35 am

Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes reports that the Cubs have called up prospect shortstop Starlin Castro.
According to Rojas, Castro is en route to meet the club for this weekend's series against the Reds. If true, it represents a surprising change of pace for the club, as Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said Castro was not in line for an early-season promotion as recently as last week. Castro, 20, is batting .376/.421/.569 with one home run, 20 RBI and 20 runs scored over 109 at-bats with Double-A Tennessee. He was ranked as the organization's No. 1 prospect by Baseball America over the winter. His promotion would push Ryan Theriot to second base.

My initial thought was Aram is hurt, Castro plays SS, Theriot goes to 2b and Fontenot plays 3b, especially with what Hendry has said about Castro in the past

Nope. It would be Fontenot/Baker (or the Crappy White Bros. as I like to call them) being replaced at 2B by Theriot while Castro slots in at SS.

I'm a Cubs guy but I'm not touching Castro till I see what he's capable of at this level. Although it can't be any worse than Alcides. Blech.

Kid has been swinging a red hot bat since March - no reason not to buy. However, he is only 20 and will certainly go through some growing pains at some point.

would you take a flier on castro or remain steady on Alcides Escobar? looking at castro's minor league stats it doesnt look like he runs a lot?

His speed is real... he's just starting to learn the art of base stealing though. He is only 20 after all.

Here's my question. I have a FAAB budget of $100. I have a very deep league, so "good" players don't hit the waiver wire often - even more so this year now that Yahoo is "adding" the top prospects before they get the call.

I still have my full $100 and now that it's May, I doubt many more useful players will be dropped.

I don't think Castro is the next coming of god...but he'll obviously be a good trade chip.

How much of my FAAB to I spend on this guy? I was thinking $50 - even $75 to make sure I get him...assuming I won't be making many more sigificant waiver claims the rest of the year...The highest amount anyone has paid so far is like $13 for Smoak (who I dropped)

Thoughts?

I wouldn't spend that much of the budget on Castro with Reyes and Drew already on squad. I'd save that $ and spend it more wisely on the likes of Wallace, M. Taylor, Stanton, C. Santana, etc. when they get the call.

If Castro can be added w/o touching your waiver priority, add him. If he requires you to use a high waiver, then don't use it. Save that for Carlos Santana, Buster Posey, Michael Stanton, Strasburg, or Chapman.

Starlin was a FA in my league, so I dropped Eric Young for him.
