Draft strategy 3of leagues vs 5of leagues

Postby shutupandball » Wed Feb 12, 2014 4:37 pm

Im typically used to 5 of leagues. How much does an OF player's value change between 3 and 5 of leagues? My current league has the following archtype.
c, 1b, 2b, 3b, ss, ci, mi, of, of, of, util, 9p, 5 bench
I know one usually wants to have 2 top options in the OF before it gets too late in 5 of leagues. Does this change at all in 3 OF leagues? What significant differences would you think change draft strategy from the typical 5of leagues (like the razzball commenter's leagues) in comparison to the one I am in? (full league info in sig) ANY help would be awesome!

Pitchers get a slight bump and outfielders get a slight nudge down... Not wholly significant, your league is just shallower for hitters... I'd have a bench bat too...

If you want me to look at your team, post the team. Don't post a link to another site where the team is.
Have you given me all the info I need to judge your team? The number of teams in the league is a good start for the big overall questions.
Is your league H2H? Roto?
I don't know who's on your waivers. Don't just ask me who you should pick up. Give me names to choose from.
If you only have one team, post your team in your signature with the league parameters.
I don't know every single matchup for next week, so if you want me to choose a player for the following week and you think the matchups are important, tell me who they're facing.

i'm curious why the pitchers would get a bump in this case, because they have a higher share of the impact on your total score? I would think draft strategy would dictate that those 3 OF have to be that much better as a result of fewer options to achieve production.

I have a 3 OF league, with the added trim of not having a CI or MI spot either, just standard positions and 1 UTIL, 5SP, 4RP no swing P position. Would this further swing the pendulum towards drafting pitchers and carrying a bench bat?

Your league looks to play shallow on offense (assuming 12 teams or less.) You can easily punt OF until later in the draft and if someone doesn't work out, replace them off the waiver wire from a pool three times the size of any other position. That's why OF is devalued.

In a 5 OF league, an RCL for example you've got 13 hitters and 9 pitchers. In the 3 OF league referenced above you've got 11 hitters and 9 pitchers. So pitchers simply make up a higher percentage of your roster, and thus become more valuable.
