Whatcha think about me trading JJ Putz and BJ Ryan for Joe Nathan and then picking up either CJ Wilson, Joe Borkowski, Izzy, Franklin, Torres, Brian Fuentes.

I figure Nathan is a + over putz and ryan and Ryan could be as good as any of these guys on FA.

Thoughts? and who would you pick up after the trade.

Yeah, I kind of like this trade. You're hedging on JJ's inconsistency (read: security - health, even) and BJ's health for a solid Nathan.

As for whom (yes, whom) to pick up, tougher call. I'd rule out Izzy because he's not currently getting save opps. Maybe rule out Fuentes, just because of the rumors that he might get moved (which apparently is enough to keep him available as a free agent?). Unless you're already on prescription strength Zantac, I'd ignore Borkowski in this situation. I kind of like Torres... at least for the near term (I think his job is safer than Franklin's - unsubstantiated, only that it's like Izzy comes back stronger than Backne). But you've gotta consider picking up CJ. You're losing JJ and BJ, and you'll be facing a big first-name-acronym-with-a-J gap.

I'd make that trade now. I've got Papelbon and Valverde and Valverde is basically insurance or is in when Boston's not playing. Otherwise, he's just taking up a roster spot.

CJ will hurt your ERA.
I'd pick up Franklin ... no reason why he should lose his job to the kid. He has put up great numbers as the closer.... except for when he had to close out the 2nd game of a double header (after already closing the first)

He's right, but if the other dude is an idiot thats his problem. Definitely do the trade. Its a cold world out there, smoky. I'd go with Torres although I like Franklin personally. If the rumors kicking around Razzball are true LaRussa thinks its Izzy's job still. Aren't they checking his BAC as part of his deal with the State?
