I've been trying to negotiate for Miggy Cabrera for some time now from this owner, thinking I can take advantage of our great differences in how we view players and their roles. He traded away CC for V-Mart couple of weeks ago. Well, yesterday he offered me this Miggy, Aaron Rowand, and Polanco for K-Rod and Cano. WHAT?? No problem, would take it in a sec, but that just doesn't seem right to do so. Is there a problem accepting trades that are way out of sync? I fear it would get vetoed and then others will be pouring in with their trade requests to him. Plus, as league commish, maybe not a good thing for my image in future dealings. Or am I missing something here?

I would vote against that trade in a second if I was another manager in your league. Miggy is a 1st round draft pick, and he's playing like a 1st round draft pick. It's not like he's struggling like a Rollins or Upton.

I think vetoes via league votes are stupid. The only time a trade should be vetoed is when it is a clear case of collusion; this is not one of those times. Just because a trade doesn't benefit both teams doesn't mean it shouldn't pass; trades like that happen in real sports all the time. It's no one's fault but the other guy's if a trade he OFFERS to you is unfair for him. Accept immediately and without regret.

Clearly this guy has no idea of player value. I'd try to mix it up on him and present a more even trade (while clearly still favoring your team). Make it a little less obvious and you can usually sneak it by the league.

So I did ask if he forgot to include a player - I hate ESPN - can't make you review what you propose. While he did forget, its not like he forgot a star. So its Cano, Jered Weaver, K-Rod to get Polanco, Miggy Cabrera and know Okajima (who I'd probably drop soon after). Good trade?

Yea but GMs make lopsided trades in real sports because they are worried about the bottom line (e.g., Memphis' salary dump of Gasol to the Lakers for some young guys, picks, expiring contracts, a bag of Skittles, and a high five).

Obviously getting Miggy gives you a trump card and its a good trade for you provided your pitching can take the hit.

I wouldn't veto that trade.

I agree with the consensus that a mutually agreed upon trade should not be voted against regardless of how lopsided. My entire league, including me, at the start of the season let a trade go through that was essentially Sizemore for Meche. They swapped two closers I can't even remember. My thinking is if the guy getting ripped off really sees the value in that for his side, then he's just bad at evaluating and has a bad team. And kudos to the either guy for realizing it.

An instance of a good veto is, as one poster mentioned, collusion. This one guy in our league had been trying to deal someone for a while(Bannister, I think) but he was one of those types who would ask for A-Rod in return and tell you how Bannister had cy young potential. So, no deals got done. Then suddenly, a deal is going through with his friend he had join the league who had clearly stopped paying attention weeks prior and I believe she was sending him Jose Reyes. We immediately saw this was not a meditated exchange by both parties and veto'd it.

Wow, sorry about the grandpa-length anecdote, but yeah there it is. Whatever deal favors you, do it. As long as you know you're not cheating, that's all that should matter.
