Goldschmidt or Hill?

Who to start, who to bench. Grab that WW guy? Low priced rookie or high priced stud?

Goldschmidt or Hill?

Postby raffy's stache » Thu Mar 14, 2013 3:05 pm

Hey guys. 12 team, H2H, ESPN, 5X5 (with pitching Losses and hitting K's).

Keeper league...each team gets 3 keepers. Keepers are drafted 3 rounds earlier than the previous season. Can be kept until they can't be drafted anymore (round 0).

This season, I have Mike Trout in round 12 and Adam Wainwright in round 16.

Do I keep Paul Goldschmidt in round 11 or Aaron Hill in round 21?
If I take Hill, I can probably redraft Goldy in round 5 or 6 considering my league's penchant for following ESPN's rankings. He has nice future value (round 18 next year, etc.)
If I take Goldy, I could target a 2B sleeper at the end of my draft like Rutledge (ESPN rank 247) or Gyorko (ESPN 279). Those dudes could even wind up with nice keeper value next year.

Keep Hill if you are pretty sure you can get Goldy back. I would still think about grabbing one of those MI late in the draft as well though.

If there is any question about Goldy though, I would keep him over Hill.

Agree with above.

Goldie is the keeper.

2B is slim pickings but Goldie is still in a growth stage. There is a good chance he will move up steadily as he loses 3 rounds per year in your league so I wouldn't be worried.

Odds are you will be able to pick up Hill or a Rickie Weeks in your draft (not in the 21st round) but after you've landed some studs...

I would consider getting a guy like Jose Altuve...Altuve might be a little undervalued...will get you SBs and AVG, a few runs...I know Grey isn't high on a guy like Kipnis but he's a guy that's probably a little overvalued with some of the hype.

Good luck!

Thanks for the good (and conflicting) input, Mauddib and BluePulaski. It looks like an easy decision on the surface. I think it really relies on Goldy becoming a 5 star stunner immediately (since he would be round 8, 5, and 2 in the next three years) vs. Hill being a solid, if unspectacular performer for many years (round 18, 15, 12, 9, and even 6) moving forward...

Did you read Grey's outlook on Goldie?

Blue - read Grey's outlook, which got me all tingly and committed to Goldy this year. The thought of having him at round 11 in 2013, rd. 8 in '14, rd. 5 in '15, and (if he's worth it by then) rd. 2 in '16 is very exciting.

rightwingjedi - I'm pretty confident I can snag him in round 5 in this year's draft. If he is indeed keeper worthy (Grey's forecast is like a weatherman calling for a 99% chance of snow), I'd at least get a second year out of him at rd. 2.

Then again, Aaron Hill is 30 years old. Will he even be worth keeping 5 years from now? Last year he went undrafted in our league...
