Whittling away at an innings overage (parked Lilly during his TO win). I'm thinking of starting Sanchez and benching Wolf away from Petco.

sitting wolf @NYY is a no-brainer. sitting sanchez @ home against DET isn't a bad idea either. he might get 8 Ks...he might get lit. suppose it's worth a chance but if you're over on innings...

I'd say hell no and no.

I spot started Wolf last week and he paid off big time. But I would ONLY spot start Wolf if he were pitching at Petco, and even then I'd be wary of what team he was up against. The Yankees have some pretty potent lefties in their lineup.

You may not want to gamble against the Tiger's lineup right now. They even got to Lincecum who gave up 4 ER, and only struck out 3 while walking 3. He almost doubled his HR's for the year as well. Sanchez has been solid but he could blow up in any outing as well. Maybe he's totally turned the corner but I wouldn't want to chance it against Detroit.

Yeah, I'd bench Wolf.

With regard to Sanchez, if it was the end I was also looking to protect WHIP/ERA, I'd consider benching him, too. Even though - as Sr. Gamble said - he could get 8 Ks. While the Tigers aren't the dangerous lineup everyone expected, they're still hitting lefties at a .287 clip - #4 in MLB. (Probably because Granderson's not in the lineup on those days! Zing!)

But if I was 1) in a head to head league and 2) it was early in the week (which it is and I'm not too worried about protecting ERA/WHIP yet), I might start Sanchez. He's at home, where he's got a 2.57 ERA (vs. 5.97 on the road). That split = Magic Wandy? Hmm... Maybe that's something for the glossary.

It's tough to stay disciplined with this spot starting stuff. I parked Lilly and Kershaw on the weekend against the Jays and Tigers and they combined for like 12 scoreless innings, >1k/IP and a sub-1 WHIP. Thanks for the info against lefties...which other teams are monsters against southpaws. I'm thinking I'll sit both and cross my fingers.

I like looking at OPS. All these teams have >.800 OPS against left handers (from high to low):

Cubs
Sawx
Phils
Reds
'Stros

Tough loss for Sanchez. He looked great going into the 8th, but gave up a homer, a walk and a single, and couldn't get an out.
