Adeiny Hechavarria had a heckavagamia against the Phillies on Sunday with a 3-run triple and a grand slam – both against Halladay.  These types of games will be few and far between with this guy’s bat – he’s a glove first SS (though that’s what they said about Brandon Crawford and he’s flashing early power) – but tell that to the old Jews in Miami that think of God when they hear his name.   I just wish Adeiny didn’t take off for the Sabbath as I had him Friday night in the DraftKings “Can you take down Rudy Gamble?” challenge.  I had my worst finish – 15th out of 23 – so I guess the answer to the challenge was “Yes.”  We are doing it every Friday so pay attention to  Twitter and the comment boards on Friday for the contest link.  Anyway, here are some other observations from this weekend’s games:

Yu DarvishK’d 14 Red Sox over 7 IP and 127 pitches.  That’s his 2nd start this year of 14 Ks (first against Houston) and his 4th in 7 starts that he had 10+ (SEA and LAA the other two).  He now has 72 Ks in 45.2 IP and a WHIP of 0.92.  So glad I/we drafted guys like Greinke and Cliff Lee over him – it’s risky having so many K’s coming from one pitcher.

Nolan ArenadoPretty good first week as he hit his 2nd and 3rd HRs over the weekend – the 2nd HR being a grand slam off David Price.   Thanks a lot Colorado for announcing his promotion at like 2 AM my time and allowing Grey to snap him up in the RCL Expert League while I was sleeping.  My one big scoop of the year was Mitchell Boggs….ugh.

Jose FernandezGot his first major league win with a masterpiece @PHI (7 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 9 Ks).  The Phillies video guy made the mistake of giving the Philadelphia hitters footage of the Marlin hitters instead of their pitchers.

Dee GordonLittle Earl’s favorite shortstop got called up with Hanley to the DL and stole 3 bases in his first two games (Saturday/Sunday).  He’s a must own at MI just in case he makes good on his SAGNOF promise.  It’s a shame that Tom Gordon got the ‘Flash’ moniker because it really suits Dee Gordon better.  He should’ve been Stash Gordon.

Carlos GomezCount me among the shocked that the ‘other’ CarGo is actually improving on last year’s performance.  His HR on Saturday gives him 6 HRs, 7 SBs, and a crazy .373/.423/.647.  Of course his BABIP is high (.416) but he has made strides at cutting down the Ks.  If only he hit lefty (note:  the Brewers are almost exclusively righty – Aoki is the only lefty everyday hitter.  I was real close to sitting LHP Jaime Garcia against them today and was afraid to read the box score).

Jake Peavy – Didn’t pitch over the weekend as hoped due to back stiffness.  He might go to the DL if he has a setback, but if he has a set back, why go on the DL?  I don’t know about you but, of the two Jakes, I prefer the healthier one.

Allen Craig – Had a huge weekend in Milwaukee – hitting for the cycle across Saturday/Sunday with 3 runs and 5 RBIs.  Saturday’s HR was his first of the year so he finally added some separation from Mark Teixeira.  Not too worried about the HR-less April.  The HRs will come – for now, enjoy the RBIs (25) and solid AVG (.291).

Marco Estrada 3.1 IP, 6 H, 5 BB, 5 K, and 8 ER.  Now at 6.05 ERA for the year.  More like Carne Estrada, estoy en lo correcto?  The out of character thing in this outing are the 5 BBs – he has averaged less than 2 BB/9 in his previous 170+ IP.  Listen to this Marmolesque summary of a 6-run 2nd IP (or watch it if you’re a bad listener):  K, BB, Single, K, HBP, Bases loaded BB, Bases loaded BB, Double, Single, Line Out.  Estrada’s K-rate is still at a K per inning but I’d bench him outside of easy matchups for now (and drop him in 10/12-team leagues if you have a small bench).

Andrew Bailey – Undergoing an MRI for his bicep which has kept him out since Tuesday.  I think Hanrahan should’ve studied anatomy a little more before using the Bailey voodoo doll that Pedro Ciriaco made him.

Starling Marte2 HRs and a SB on Saturday/Sunday.  Now at .321 with 5 HR/10 SB.  In RCL, I drafted Alexandro De Aza a few picks ahead of him in the 17th round.  I’d feel worse but Grey drafted Estrada in that round.

Glen PerkinsGot his first save in 10 days on Sunday making him 7-for-7 this year.  It hasn’t been easy as this is the 3rd straight outing where he gave up 2+ baserunners and the 2nd of three where he has been scored upon. While I am taking fliers on Jared Burton in a deeper league or two where we’re desperate for saves, I think Perkins will get a decent amount of rope given his strong recent track record, his strong K-rate (15 in 9 2/3 IP), and Perkins has a much better celebration after securing a win (hires a waitress out of the stands who then has sex with Tiger Woods vs. Jared Burton’s lame hand gesture across his eyes to simulate this).

Edinson Volquez – Won at Petco vs. ARI with a 6.2 IP, 1 ER, 7 baserunner, 3 K start.  While the light bulb still hasn’t gone off in terms of limiting walks (16 BBs in 37.2 IP this year) and his K-rate has been subpar this year (only 21 Ks), I still start him in 15+ team leagues during weeks when he pitches at home (2.95 ERA last year at home, 2 QS now in 3 starts at home in 2013).

J.J. Hardy – Went 4-for-9 with 2 HRs on Saturday/Sunday as he eschewed the Oriole jersey for a busy, form-fitting t-shirt that turned on all the Orange County housewives at the Angel game.  His ratios still look awful (.210 AVG with a .244 OBP) and Machado’s ascension will keep Hardy out of the top of the lineup (and likely his SS job at some point in the future) but he’s still a solid power source at MI.

Zack Greinke – Word from the LA Times is that Greinke is 3 weeks ahead of schedule in his recovery from his collarbone fracture and could be back by end of May.  It’s a Greinkevus clavicle!

Justin Verlander – Toyed with the Astros but spared them the ignominy of a no-hitter (7 IP, 2 H, 9 Ks).  Then again, the Astros gave Altuve the day off so they spared Verlander an extra 2 hits and some bites around his ankle.

Eduardo NunezLeft Sunday’s game early with pain in his ribs.  The trainer reflexively diagnosed it as ‘fossilization’ until he realize it was one of the Yankee youngins.  He’s day-to-day.  I decided to make to-day-the-day to drop him in RCL – not convinced his SBs in 2011-2012 carry over now that he’s playing full-time.

Roy Halladay – Speaking of pitchers taking advantage of weak lineups, Halladay faced the MIAmi Marlins at home on Sunday and was dominating them with 4 Ks in 2.1 innings when Charlie Manuel took him out….wait, is that 9 ER?  He is now going on the DL (Disgraceful List?) with a sore shoulder.  The Phillies should have known better to start him when he told Juan Pierre before the first pitch “I’ll be your huckleberry.”

Ryan ZimmermanBack off the DL and the Nats must’ve been happy to see him back and he scored 5 runs on 2 hits and 3 BBs.  He even stole a base.  Where was that last year when the Nats were desperate for a leadoff hitter?

Jon Niese – Saturday’s rainout only delayed the beatdown (4 IP, 7 ER, 13 baserunners) as @ATL feels like a brutal matchup these days for a LHP (Uptons, Gattis, Uggla, the lefty killing Johnson brothers – Reed & Chris).  And then the one lefty in the lineup – Freddie Freeman – goes 3-for-5 and a triple short of the cycle.  I think that – other than Harvey – the Met starters are similar to Padre starters.  Start them at home and be wary about road starts (FWIW, Niese pitched well outside of Metco last year).

R.A. DickeyEarned his 5th loss of the year as his knuckler got sandwiched in a 3-tater, 7 ER performance in 6 IP against Seattle.  He could win 15 or lose 15 the rest of the year and I wouldn’t be surprised.

Brandon MorrowAt least one struggling ex-Mariner/current Blue Jay pitcher fared okay against his former team this weekend as Morrow went 8 IP, 8 baserunners (5 BB), 2 ER, and 8 Ks for his first win.  I agree with the Streamonator‘s lukewarm opinion of his next start ($1.6 for his 5/10 @BOS) but like him in general – especially when he’s flashing Ks.

Emilio Bonifacio – Stole his first 2 SBs of the year…Bonifaci!  Against Jesus Montero…oh.  He steals bases in bunches so maybe this is the start of something.

Matt Cain – The ‘buy low’ window on Cain may be closing after a 7.1 IP, 8 baserunner, 4 K, 1 ER win against the Artless Dodgers.  He’s been done in this year by HRs and poor pitching with men on base – neither of which had been issues in the past.  Then again, until Jered Weaver pitches again, I still think this may be the year that FIP seeks revenge on all the pitchers who keep outperforming it.

Melky CabreraJoined Allen Craig in the ‘1st HR of the year’ club.  Going into the game, he had one double, 2 triples, and 0 HRs.  His ‘isolated power’ (SLG-AVG) was the 5th worst among those qualified for the batting title beating only Revere, Pierre, Polanco, and Blanco Polanco.  If only there was something you could take that would give you more power.
