Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

It’s been over a month since we took a look at some pitchers who are pitching over their heads.  Last time, we saw Cueto, Porcello, Millwood, Saunders, Lilly, Cahill and Gallardo were due for a correction.  Since then, they’ve had Liquid Paper dumped all over their stats.  Also, on that list were Matt Cain, Zach Duke and John Lannan.  6 of 10 pitchers pitched poorly since the last time I told you they would, Gallardo’s been marginally worse and Zach Duke’s been marginally the same.  That’s pretty bad odds against the pitchers on this list.  A few are still on here as they’re still pitching over their head.  For a refresher course on what the eff I’m even talking about with FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching), take Exhibit A pitcher who has an ERA of 2.75 but his FIP is a 6.75.  A -4.00 difference.  That means he’s been very lucky and there’s a good chance his ERA is going to go way up.  So here’s a list of pitchers with the biggest difference between their actual ERAs and their FIPs. (If your guy’s on the list, it’s not a great sign.)

Matt Cain – -1.63 difference.  Cain’s regression is defying gravity.

J.A. Happ – -1.23.  Then throw in his home park and the Phils will have to start limiting his innings.  Or, at least, they should.  But after their handling of Hamels last year, they may not.

Edwin Jackson – -1.19.  Ouch!  That was Edwin Jackson landing on top of Aaron Hill in the giant pile of Guys You Already Got So Much Value From That If You Want More You’re Just Being Greedy.

Kevin Millwood – -1.19.  He still has a ways to go before we see the Millwood we know and don’t own in fantasy baseball.

John Lannan – -1.13.  The terrible K/9 and the team behind him makes him questionable anyway.  I recently owned him for his start vs. the Padres.  Got a 8 inning, 1 earned run game from him.  Then I dropped him.

Jarrod Washburn – -1.12. It’s only because his ERA is currently a 2.64.  You don’t really think he’s a sub-3 ERA pitcher, right?  Rhetorical!

Wandy Rodriguez – -1.01.  No!!!  Anyone but Wandy, please.  Here, take my Catfish Hunter 1978 RC Cola Player Soda Can.  Just leave Wandy alone!

Trevor Cahill – -.97. Since he currently has over a 5 ERA, he shouldn’t be on your team anyway.

Joba Chamberlain – -.91. If his mom, Anne Ramsey, catches him on this list, there will be trouble.

From Around The Web

  1. I know chris carpenter wouldn’t be on this list, but does anyone think this guys making it thru the rest of the season????

    The only thing thats helping him was the little DL stint he went on….?

  2. Probable Party Starter says:
    (link)

    So if I get any offers including those guys I should tell them to “FIP off”? Joba isn’t going anywhere from my squad though.

  3. peter says:

    This post has ruined my day. Thanks!

    Should I try to trade a guy like Edwin Jackson for someone like Lackey?

  4. Joel says:
    (link)

    Edwin Jackson looks even worse by xFIP, although Comerica supresses home runs, so I think his FIP is sustainable.

  5. EJ says:
    (link)

    I picked up Josh Willingham this week off the FA list and realized he’s only owned in 23% of ESPN leagues! I find this incredible. Sure, he missed a lot of games early in the year, but the Nats finally realized what they got in this guy and he’s playing every day now.

    I did a quick, simple analysis of what his stats would average out to if he had roughly another 120 ABs:

    70 R, 110 H, 30 2B, 25 HR, 64 RBI, .304, .420 OBP, .598 SLG

    Holy crap, it’s Chase Utley!!! For what it’s worth, his ownership is up 15% in the last couple weeks, but still, I feel like I struck gold with this pickup. Also, I think he could be a nice sleeper pick for next year in a late round, though if he continues to make a name for himself, maybe not!

  6. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Tony Y: I’m very wary of Carp making it through the season, but I think everyone is. Which makes trading him difficult, unless you under sell him.

    @Probable Party Starter: Hehe

    @peter: That trade’s fair.

  7. Joel says:
    (link)

    @EJ: Willingham will look even better if he picks up 1B/OF eligibility.

  8. peter says:
    (link)

    @Grey: Fair? As in, even? I don’t want fair, per se. I want to be a jerk and ditch a falling pitcher for a rising one.

  9. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @EJ: The problem is outfielders that can put up 25 homers are pretty abundant.

    @peter: May turn out to be apples for apples and I wouldn’t do a deal like that.

  10. Cain Fan says:
    (link)

    Cain, while defying gravity does have pretty normal peripherals based on his past. The only things that are different are his BABIP (30 pts lower) and LD% (~10% lower). I wonder if Cain’s stuff is improving, especially his Change-up. This would case more groundballs (like he is seeing) and weaker contact, causing both BABIP and LD% to drop. In addition he has solid defenders behind him and is pitching in a weak division.

    FYI his remaining starts (if he stays on track w. rotation) are CIN, @NYM, @CIN, @COL, COL, @PHI, SD, LAD, @LAD, @ARI, ARI, @SD (7 no brainers and 2-4 more ok starts). I wouldn’t sell and think he actually makes a decent keeper.

  11. EJ says:
    (link)

    @Grey: Well those numbers are a projection where he would be right now if he hadn’t missed 30+ games early on, and assuming he kept the same pace of production. Right now there are 4 outfielders in all of baseball that have more than 22 homers. Cust kayin’.

  12. Dingo says:
    (link)

    One note on Joba – he’s given up a ridiculous amount of unearned runs this season (10 unearned vs. 45 earned). If you compare his total Runs Allowed to his FIP, there’s only a 0.10 difference. I’m not sure how errors influence FIP, if at all, but you can imagine how a misplayed ball could give Joba the opportunity to give up a costly home run, which would influence FIP.

    More importantly, since the all-star break, which he claims helped him regain his focus, his FIP has been around 3.20.

  13. mike says:
    (link)

    he won’t keep up current pace!

  14. Paulie Allnuts

    Paulie Allnuts says:

    @Grey: Who gets the best of this trade in a keeper league: Lackey/Vasquez for Lincecum?

    Also, is it time to drop JJ Hardy? The season is 2/3 over, and I am getting tired of waiting for that elusive hot streak. The pick ups would be the usual MI rotatable schmohawks.

    I think that the correction is actually occurring with Edwin Jackson. He has been less then stellar in the last month.

    Thanks!

  15. Prince says:
    (link)

    @Grey: Yeah, I hated seeing Wandy on that list too. He’s my binky. What are your thoughts about Alexei vs. J.Lopez? It seems Alexei isn’t really living up to expectations, whereas Lopez has really turned it on. Thanks…

  16. Ceasar says:

    Starting Cueto against the Cubs tonight?

    Relatedly, my Chipper for his D. Lowe?

    Thanks.

  17. Critter Nagurski says:
    (link)

    ehhhh.. A little bold to make those kind of claims based on FIP alone. If you’re using xFIP or some other variation to make that claim you should at least toss their HR/FB rates up there too.

  18. Martin says:
    (link)

    would you start kuroda today V MIL?

  19. Critter Nagurski says:
    (link)

    @ cain fan: 87.4 LOB% so far this year. high.

    still, you have to like those matchups for the rest of the year..

  20. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @EJ: Sure, but you’re assuming he keeps his current production for an entire season.

    @Dingo: Fair points.

    @Paulie Allnuts: Drop Hardy. I’d want Lincecum.

    @Prince: Alexei

    @bobbo: He is indeed.

    @Ceasar: I’m not starting Cueto. I’d want Chipper.

    @Critter Nagurski: It’s but one way to look at guys.

  21. GTS says:
    (link)

    Yeah, I owned Lannan for a few starts. He ate some innings for me and that’s about it. Terrible defense, terrible K/9, so that leaves ERA/WHIP… definite drop.

  22. @Grey: Im in a league thats very tight 1-8, so its hard to make deals…would you be hesitant to make a trade with the team immediately ahead of you in the standings? I have an excess of SBs and he has excess of SPs….

    Thoughts on Ellsbury for Johan or McClouth for Felix, prefer either side, if any?

    He could potentially gain 5pts right away from SBs from ellsbury and get a few from runs…

    Do you think the 100 innings or so left in Johan or Felix can lower my ERA from 3.81 to 3.60 range and my 1.29Whip to 1.25 range with the proper lineup calls

    Id also start wainwright shields garza too

    Thanks…

  23. brad says:
    (link)

    Would you rather keep Votto (costs a 6th round pick) or Reynolds (costs a 17th round pick)?

    In other words trade my Votto for his Reynolds, knowing the keeper rules?

  24. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @GTS: Yup

    @matthole: I wouldn’t be hesitant if I were getting the best side of a trade in my estimation. I’d prefer the pitcher in both trades, but it depends on what you need, they’re both fair. If you need steals, grab Ellsbury. McLouth’s not going to give you that many steals.

    @brad: Reynolds

  25. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)

    @brad: reynolds

  26. @Grey: Id be dealing Ellsbury for Johan or mcclouth for felix….which side would you push harder for?

  27. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @matthole: Ellsbury if you need steals.

  28. @Grey: I could be confused or have misworded it…

    Im the one who has a lead in steals and is looking for pitching help……

  29. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)

    @matthole: if the guy in front of you would gain points from steals, i’d try to sell him on mcclouth who won’t give him nearly the SBs that ellsbury will

  30. @ThePoonTycoon: Thanks, so you think theres still enough time to make up ground in pitching cats with an ace like felix..

  31. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)

    yeah, maybe not in era if you gotta climb .20, but in whip since you only gotta drop .04, sure (plus you never know when the other guy will fall back to you and meet you in the middle too). you’ll need a great 2 months from felix if you are largely relying only on him, but he’s got the skills. injuries/possible skipped starts would be my primary concern with felix just because th mariners are gonna be out of it, so any issue whatsoever will probably result in him having starts skipped/being shutdown.

  32. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)

    the main question is that if you don’t think you can win with what you got now, what’s the harm in making a move? personally mclouth is a #3 OF/util guy in most leagues, so i would definitely move him for a felix type.

    @Grey: Do you like Kazmir over Bedard, Danks, Wolf or Jurrjens? He is a free agent in my 10-team league, but I’m guessing not for long…other potential free agents include Happ & Floyd…or sit tight?

    Also I noticed Reyes status is at yet another setback and Yahoo is saying it might be best he sits out the rest of the season…I don’t want to waste a roster spot, when is the right time to cut him loose?

    Last question, Napoli will be splitting catcher time with Mathis once Vlad returns, Montero has been hot recently but is also splitting time. I don’t want to drop Napoli but would it be worth holding 2 catchers (what if Montero keeps this up) ?

    Thanks Grey!

  47. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @Nick: i’d take him over bedard unless you have a DL spot. bedard is probably better…when healthy though.

  48. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Tony Y: Yeah, I feel ya, Miguel.

    @RIP Harry: Yup

    @Nick: Kaz over Bedard. Cut Reyes loose if you need the DL room. Just hold one catcher. Choose one of those two (I’d take Napoli, but can’t go wrong with either).

  49. Nick says:
    (link)

    @Grey: Ok so I’m going to drop Bedard for Kazmir…I don’t necessarily need the DL room if I drop Bedard because Hunter should be back soon so I guess sit tight with Reyes on the DL? or cut Reyes loose and grab Bourn off waivers (I dropped him for Peralta but now will regret it if someone grabs him)… what you think, might as well do that right?

  55. Nick says:
    (link)

    @Grey: Problem! If I do all these moves right now I won’t have anyone on the DL (with Hunter coming back) which means I will be over roster limit… who do you cut?

    C-Napoli
    1B-Gonzalez
    2B-Utley
    SS-Peralta
    OF-BJ Upton, Ibanez, Hunter
    U-Pena
    BN-Bourn, Alexei, Pence

    SP-Beckett & Bills
    RP-Franklin & Hoffman

    Grey,

    I am currently in a keeper league (keep 5. 5×5) and am massively overmatched in pitching so going the ratio route with MR and closers. Seeing as this is the case, i’m debating trading Halladay for a 3b. Who would you prefer between mini donkey and longo? Do you feel like reynolds has a chance to repeat this next year, or is this season just to re(mini)donkulous?

    Going into next year, have Crawford, Tiex, Jroll, Halladay, Howard, beejay upton as potential keepers.

    Some Cubbie updates: Theriot HBP in the underside of his right arm, stayed in to run but it looked like it hurt like hell so I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s removed at some point as it may affect his ability to throw. Also, Gorzo looking pretty good so far in his Cubs debut, overcame one of Soriano’s trademark defensive “adventures” to get out of trouble in the first

    Also, I would like to thank Pineiro for finally remembering that he’s not good

    I realize Napoli might be able to handle the rigors of a full season, but why would you sit him during a hot streak for a guy thats hitting .197?

  98. Nick says:
    (link)

    @Robert: While Napoli doesn’t start every game he is an excellent hitter and provides good stats from the catcher position. If you can handle seeing him benched a few times a week then go with him because the days he starts he’s bound to hit a home-run (or at least it seems like it).

  99. Nick says:
    (link)

    @Robert: With that said, I do think Wieters may be picked up in your league (depending on # of teams). Maybe turn a quick trade involving one of your catchers?

    What round do you see Jose Reyes going next year? It seems like with him Everything Falls Apart. I’m in the running for the last playoff spot in my league and would love to trade him to someone who’s out of it, someone looking for a New Day Rising, but not sure what kind of value is fair. Any suggested targets? I’ve got 2 spots to move up but only behind 2 and a half games, it seems my chances are sort of Candy Apple Gray.

    @Nick: You are reading my mind. Does seem like when Nap is in there he does some damage. And I do think Wieters would be claimed if I let him go. I have tried to trade one of them without success. Owners in my league are afraid to trade, like the guy they trade might be their downfall or something.

    @Commish Cauda (formerly Mike): There’s no reason to keep a player who’s not starting. He’ll go in the last round next year.

    @mrbaseball: Thanks!

    @Robert: Yeah, Jones is coming down to earth.

    @Robert: Napoli

    @Charlie: Nice run. I’d look to get at least a 2nd tier 1st baseman – say A-Gonz – or a bottom level 1st tier SP, think CC, but I have no idea what you need. I see him going in the bottom of the 1st round, beginning of the 2nd.

    will this neftali feliz get holds in the sp spot for the remainder of the season? is he worth picking up?

    J. Pineiro MET his match

    I know it’s a little late, but I like “McUpton” as a nickname for McCutchen. It kind of sounds like a hamburger with 30/30 potential.

    Mini-Donkey seems even more appropriate now that he’s carrying my team on his back.

    Neftali Feliz Frank Francisco/ C.J. Wilson – this will be your Brain Freeze update – when? soon – how soon your ask – soon – it might have already happened but that would be too soon

    I got WHIPped hard tonight..Stauffer, Aardsma and Howell

  111. currently have Kinsler and have been offered Brian Roberts for Heath Bell, and I have Bailey, Howell, Rodney, Nunez & Frasor…..do you think this is a fair trade or would one of these guys more equal? Thx

    rank the following dodger rp’s for holds potential – sherrill, troncoso, kuo. thanks…

  113. in regards to above….or should I just pick up M. Izturis, either Lopez, Casey McGehee or Matsui until Kinsler gets back or is it worth trading away a donkey-corn closer to get Roberts?

    @AL KOHOLIC: The Mets as a team should be put on the disgraceful list. They are almost unwatchable. I find myself switching to Phillies or Yankees games.

    @Nick: I will never switch allegiance from the Mets, but I am at a point where I can’t stand to watch them. They are David Wright and 7 Triple A ball players. But tonight even K-Rod faltered.
    @Steve: Look on the bright side. At least you didn’t have Contreras and Ho Che Var

  116. start Gaudin and Price tomorrow or leave em on the pine?

    @kR Express: I’d sit them both in 12 team leagues and shallower.

    @Grey: The guy I am up against this week has the same number of pitchers going than I do and his match ups are more favorable. His era is almost 3.00 better than mine because of Hoffman and Hughes blowing up. If I sit Price and Liriano I lose the innings category. Do you like my chances to improve era with Nolasco@Phil, Wainwright@PIT, Vazquez@LAD,Lackey vs TEX, Jurjens@LAD, Kaz@SEA going this week? The other guy has Cook@Phil, Saunders vsTex, Garza@SEA, Wells@Col, Porcello vs Bal, Hanson@SD, Feldman@LAA, Buchholz@NYY, Lester@NYY. Thank you.

    Hey Grey, what are your thoughts about Randy Wells? I know you posted about him once before, and since then he’s stayed remarkably consistent.

    haha I want to fall back in his arms, but is it too late to expect him to continue to produce like he has?

    @NickG: He should be owned in all leagues.

    @Grey: Muchos gracias

    He just hit waivers, I will have to drop either Shields or a slumping B.J. Upton to get him. I’ll have to sleep on it.

    What do you guys think…just got offered Gallardo and Justin Upton for Carlos Lee and Gallardo in a 10 team 6×6 (ops and QS) league. I could use the most help in avg/r/ops and pretty much all pitching categories other than Ks.

    I want to counter because this trade doesnt seem to do much for me, but the best pitchers he has are wainright and shileds. He does have kemp, which would help. Anyone see a match?
