Don't be shellfish...FacebookTwitterGoogle+

The other day I looked at the pitchers that were getting lucky for fantasy baseball.  Today, we put on our miner’s helmet and pan for gold where the rest of the prospectors have abandoned.  In our last look at pitchers that should get better, I pointed out Gavin Floyd, Haren, Randy Wells, Edwin Jackson, Pineiro, Harang, Correia, Masterson, Peavy and Morrow.  Morrow’s ERA went from 6.52 in May to 3.35 in June/July, Floyd’s went 5.63 to 2.21, Haren went from 6.08 to 3.05, Edwin from 5.58 to 3.37… You get the idea.  Even Justin Masterson was better (barely).  You can argue that some of these guys had no place to go but down, but you’d be arguing with a computer screen.  You’re just reading my words, we’re not in the same room.  OR ARE WE?!  Anyway, here’s a list of pitchers with the biggest difference between their xFIP and their ERA. (If your guy is on the list, it’s a good sign.  Some would even say you could go out and trade for some of these guys, you educated fantasy baseball owner you!)

Francisco Liriano – 0.89.  There’s guys with bigger differences that I could’ve put first but A) Liriano’s xFIP is below 3.  Aw, sookie.  B) I own Liriano on a few teams and this is after all about numero uno.  C) B was already forced, there’s not going to be a C.

Scott Baker – 1.16.  You know what’s nice about Baker?  And by nice I mean extremely frustrating and annoying.  He pitches well and follows it up by lying in the corpse position as hitters kick dirt on him.  Pitch well or pitch terrible; don’t make me come back there!

James Shields – 1.32.  It is just like Shields to force me to say something about him in a favorable light when all I want is to pick up the world and drop it on his head.  I wouldn’t go out and trade for Shields, but if he were sitting on waivers I’d point and laugh… Then I’d pick him up after he apologized for last year.

Brandon Morrow – 0.93.  Smooches on his K-rate.  Squatting pooches on his walk rate.

Dan Haren – 0.92.  His stats should be better in the 1st half so you can argue he’s due to fare better….but he’s always worse in the 2nd half so he’s due to do worse…consider it a Catch Deux-Deux.

Randy Wells – 0.91.  During my Blue Period, I drank nothing but blueberry milkshakes and talked of nothing but Randy Wells’ eventual turn around.  The same mood can also be found in some of my early Jeremy Guthrie posts.  Now I feel like Baby Jessica whenever I look at Wells.

RE: the league size discussion from the previous post

if i wanted my fantasy fate to be decided by pure luck, fantasy football would be my #1 fantasy sport of choice.

i think 12-14 team leagues are the best for balancing luck and skill. i’ve done some 10 team leagues are too shallow, but i think 16+ would be too luck reliant on injuries.

normally, @BOS is a no-no, but Doubront is fresh fish.

Just to follow up with the post about roster size. I agree with the last poster and Grey that it’s good to have some quality FAs, lower end every day players and spot starters. I don’t like it when it gets so deep that you constantly have to check to see who the latest rookie flavor of the week is, or who on another team just got hurt, so now they’ve been replaced, etc., so you gotta snag that guy before someone else does. Contrary to popular belief, some of us do have lives outside of this, and constantly searching, waiting, watching, is a bit too much. My problem with too deep of rosters, as well, is that when a stud gets hurt and you blew your first round pick on them, and now you’re out of competition because there isn’t anything to replace them with. Or now you have to decimate another part of your roster to get a comparable replacement. I agree, as well, that 8 Teams can be way too short. I’m in an 8 Team H2H league. It’s still fun, but it’s also a pain in the ass because there is TOO much talent in the pool. I prefer the 16 Team league I’m in (just took over 1st with the help of Grey and many of you), but I tend to focus on the 8 Team league just because money is involved. Just continuing on with my two cents…

  7. Ciao Grey: in a deeeepp roto league, do you see any value in Vin Mazzaro as a matchups guy? I most need the hardest pitching stats to get: Ws, ERA, and WHIP. Looks like his next four starts are @KC, CHW, @CHW, and KC.

Even in a 20-team league there’s gotta be somebody better, right?

  8. Wilsonian says:

@ThePoonTycoon: re: the 16 team leagues…I’ll agree that injuries play a huge role. There are a few teams in my league that should be way ahead of me in the standings, but they aren’t because they’ve lost 2-4 studs and just missed the boat on some quality/decent pick-ups. I’ve just gotten lucky to this point that my guys have been healthy…

  9. Commish Cauda (formerly Mike) says:

In a short week, is it automatic to start the guy with 4 starts vs the guy with 3 starts?

    Pick 2:

    Chris Davis: 4 @BOS
    Jay Bruce: 3 vsCOL
    Gomes: 3 vsCOL
    Coco Crisp: 3@KC

  10. Wilsonian says:
    (link)

@ThePoonTycoon: oh, and those guys have seemingly quit caring about the league, quit making moves, don’t respond to trade offers, etc. And that also really kills the fun when teams can’t get any better because the league is too deep that they quit on the league and just wait for next year. If the league is a bit smaller, they might have had a chance at a decent pickup and could still be competitive.

  11. Grey

    Grey says:

@Nuke LaDouche: A bit too much.

@ThePoonTycoon: There’s also 14 team leagues that are shallow and 10 team leagues that are deep, but in general, agreed.

    @Commish Cauda (formerly Mike): Lilly

    @Anonymous: Nope

@Wilsonian: I tend to think 5 OF, CI, MI in a 12 team league gives people a chance to still compete if they lose top guys, while not making it seem like there’s always guys available.

    @Enrique: I wouldn’t touch him.

@Commish Cauda (formerly Mike): I’d start Davis for the 4 games, yeah.

  12. @Wilsonian: @ThePoonTycoon: I disagree about the smaller leagues. I think it takes more skill to manage a team in a deep league, where talent is so scarce.

I played in an 11-team league last year and won going away — it was too easy to find suitable replacements when there was bad luck, and after a few years with only deep leagues I felt like a big leaguer facing minor league pitching in such a small league. That seemed like luck to me, just playing your studs and riding hot streaks.

I’m in a 20 teamer this year, and while I admit I find it a little frustrating because the pickings can be so thin, I do enjoy it and I’ve found some great talent on waivers (thanks in part to Grey and my fellow Razzballers). I think 16 to 18 teams is about right for me.

Last thing: I don’t buy the argument that losing a first-round pick is disaster in a deep league. It certainly helps to have a healthy and productive first round pick (I’m in third in my 20-team league, thanks in part to Miguel Cabrera), but the guy in first picked Chase Utley in the first round, and the guy right behind me had Kinsler. I think it’s more about how you fill in the positions with non-studs — more like managing a real team rather than an all-star team.

    VERY small sample sizes:
Davis .294 SLG in 8 games in 09&08 at Boston. Not a HR in 24 ABs.
Gomes .564 SLG at Home this year. He faces Hammel (who has been poor away), DeLarosa (poor last outing), and Cook. I’d take my chances with Gomes, but maybe Davis finds lightning (he has hit well, again, in the minors).

I don’t think the small leagues are more competitive and I definitely think it takes way more skill in the larger 16 team+ leagues. In fact, I said I like my 16 team league the most (I’m in a 16, a 12, and an 8), but I pay attention to the 8 team a lot because it’s a money league. I was just saying that a part of the issue with those large leagues is when injuries really decimate a team and they’re basically out of it early and then don’t pay attention, trade, make pickups, etc. This has happened in my 16 team league. And that’s too bad, plus it kinda diminishes the competition. That’s all I was getting at.

  18. Arrgh, tough day. Just got offered Liriano for my Rafael Soriano. I really, really want Liriano but I’m loathe to give up one of my 3 solid closers (Marmol, Soriano, and Nunez)…all I have other than those 3 is Gutierrez.

Trying to see if I can get a brainfreeze for Scott Baker, that’d make me feel better, but no bites so far.

  19. Commish Cauda (formerly Mike) says:

    Another strategy question…

H2H-Points league…considering the short week, is it better to go with a starter instead of a closer with only 3 games?

It’s between Colby Lewis @BOS or Soria: 3 vsOAK?

  20. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)

@Wilsonian: also think a larger/deeper league starts feeling like you have to be on top over everything instead of giving you buddy shit for making a crappy trade or drafting grady sizemore or something like that, which is why most of us like fantasy baseball to begin with.

@Grey: yeah, it all comes down to roster sizes really more than teams, guess i could be more specific on that.

  21. And he just told me he could toss in Mike Gonzalez…

Soriano for Liriano and Mike G

    Gotta do that, right?

  22. BookieBob says:

    @Enrique: @Wilsonian: @ThePoonTycoon:

How about daily vs weekly leagues?

My money league is a weekly transaction league. Free agent pickups are awarded in reverse order of the standings. There’s no bench, so your active players are just that – active.

I don’t care for daily transaction leagues. Too much reward for 14 hour a day web addicts.

Weekly also minimizes the advantage desk jockeys like me have over players like my brother-in-law, who actually has a real job to do everyday. I can sit here all day reading/posting about fantasy baseball (sorry bossman!), while other owners can still compete even with limited time on the ‘net.

    (Great discussion btw!)

  23. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)

@BookieBob: i think in h2h, weekly is the easy call. you start your lineup and you deal with it. you can’t manipulate the stats by pulling all your SPs once you think you have era/whip wrapped up or whatever, your team as to perform mon-sun in order to win. some call it strategy, but with only 7 days of games, i think it’s too small of a sample size to derive any skill in a manager’s abilities by him getting 3 decent starts and you get shelled so he benches the rest of his guys all week to sit on the ratio cats.

for roto, i think daily has to be the call. that way you can make your SP decisions based on innings limits (different from h2h because the numbers are calculated over 1300 or so innings v. 35 or so you get in a week). you can rotate hitters in for short schedule days. things like that.

@timSTi: in my 12 team, 5 man keeper, one of the guys is convinced he’s gonna be able to trade sizemore to a bottom feeder for good SP help for the 2nd half. i told him he’s a fool if he thinks anyone is gonna take a chance on keeping sizemore when he hasn’t been fantasy relevant since 2008. so i guess take that for what it’s worth.

Was reading a Yahoo! article about Beltran and found this gem in the comments:
“Here’s the thing I don’t get, and it’s a common theme in RotoArcade….you point out (in so many words) that a player sucks. Then you go on to state that you will trade the player. If you know that the player sucks, doesn’t it stand to reason that the other GMs in your league also know that the player sucks? If so, then why would they want to trade for a player that sucks?
You make is sound like a foregone conclusion that you will be able to unload Beltran (presumably for a player of value). In actuality, every competitive player already knows Beltran’s limitations, and you won’t get anything of value for him. ”

Andy Behrens responds with “Kurt C, you’ve been traded to Razzball for a second-rounder in 2012. Thank you for your service to the organization.”

Ok cool I’m gonna try to grab laroche, unfortunetly there is no space on my DL, who would u drop: Clayton richards, marcum, adam Lind or medlen?

Geez this is two years of crap from Reyes –
Mets manager Jerry Manuel said Thursday that Jose Reyes (side) will not return to the starting lineup until he is 100 percent pain-free.

Lilly or Pineiro for the 2nd half?

I’d be more frustrated with the Angels for the possible blahtoon of Paul McAnulty and Napoli if I wasn’t so confident that McAnulty’s not very good. But then again, how bad does a player have to be for Scioscia to start them over Napoli? Rhetorical!

  88. royce! says:

edit: to NOT start them over Napoli

Good to see the old Kershaw make his reappearance…right after I picked him up over the break…

    Guh…

    @Wilsonian: Yep…it’s the g-g-g-g-ghost of B-B-B-B-BBershaw!

  91. @ThE sHiT: I’m in much the same boat – althought there’s no mid-season prize in my league. Just playing the first place team and my pitching is way over-matched… and Slowey started me off just dandy (god I hate him). Lets pretend we’re in the NBA and form a prayer circle.

Good news is finally pulled off Hart + 7th and 15th rounders next year for Gallardo and Donkey. I suppose I’ll rename my team “Donkey Punch” now.

Dropping DeJesus to make room – hate that you have to make a roster space for a guy who’s on the DL. After I DL Gallardo, I may just grab DeJesus back up if he makes it through waivers – or just use the spot to stream.

Why did I draft Bay I even felt bad after I did it. Batting 6th behind Davis lol? Is he droppable in 10team Roto with Vlad Holliday Jones Quentin

  93. Dumbmutt says:

Ahh forgot I had Beltran on DL

@royce!: haha I like it! I hope that ghost gets the hell outta here real quick, though. It scares the shit outta me!

@Grey: currently have Lind, Fowler, Davis, Torres to take up 2 UTIL spots and 2 bench spots in my 16 Team H2H league. Beckham is available (dropped him for Davis last week)…would you move any of them for Becks? He looks like he may have turned it around a hair…

    Question:

Who would you start at 2B right now (I lost Utley):

Sean Rodriguez, Casey McGehee or Ian Stewart?
They are all basically sucking over the last month or so.
Don’t need any stats in particular.

  96. Grey

    Grey says:

@Dumbmutt: Depends who you’re dropping him for.

@Wilsonian: I’d move Torres for Beckham if you don’t need steals.

  97. Wilsonian says:

@Grey: my only guys with any speed at all are Wright, Fowler, Torres, Hunter, Hamilton, Kelly Jo. Still move Torres for Becks?

  98. Grey

    Grey says:

@Wilsonian: Fowler and Torres are the same player, so you have to choose one. I’d go with Fowler.

@Grey Napoli or Montero for the rest of the season?

I’m not sure what the proper Razz Term would be, but Jose Contreras certainly crapped all over my ratios. I’m talking 67.50 ERA and 7.50 WHIP… Luckily, my opponent had WalKershaw going, so hopefully the two even out.

CarLOLs Beltran caught stealing 2nd by Posey. I’m wondering why Beltran even tried…

  102. Wilsonian says:

@Grey: you aren’t worried about Fowler losing any PT? That would be my only issue with him, possibly…other than that, I totally agree with you.

Which side? CC Werth Rivera or Wainwright Manny Lidge.

@Grey: this is probably very true…thanks, yet again, for your sage advice.

@Grey: since the catcher talk is rearing its ugly head again I figured I would throw my hat in the ring with this nugget:
Victor Martinez underwent a scan of his fractured thumb Thursday.
“It shows it got a lot better,” he said. “I think from this point it’s just seeing how it feels every day. Hopefully I can wake up tomorrow with no pain. I’m just taking it day by day and just seeing how it feels.” Martinez also took a few swings with a bat and put a glove on his thumb for the first time. The hope is he will be able to rejoin the Red Sox in about two weeks.

@Grey: Have fun writing your round up – Tonight was a funny one as I had my finger on the add/drop to add Beckham and drop FeLop as he was hitting his homerun. Lets hope he brings that average and power back up all in the second half. I am sure Steve will see your write up, go look to grab him, and BINGO. Awwww the CT Yankee beat the Kiwi.

Ah well, maybe not that much drama.

  109. @Anonymous: Yeah that was silly. Wonder if it was a blown hit & run. Wasn’t even close.

@BSA: Yeah, give yourself a cold shower there, fella. Saw you grabbed him earlier.
In any case I’ve already got Freddy Sanchez playing that You-Think-I’m-Helping-But-I’m-Actually-Draining-The-Life-From-Your-Team role.

  111. BSA says:

Is Freddy still yours? I know my drain. I think I am really screwed if all the DLs come back or the typical producers actually wake up. It made me chuckle as I went through the top 100 for the second half and realized how spread out they are around our league.

After I grabbed Beck I checked your 2nd/3rd and other than falling into the Barmes you looked ok with Swish/Zimm/Uggla.

@Grey: Is Beckham getting more fruitful by the day? Or still the same since i last asked u like……….i think yesterday? BTW, since ive started wkin at LAX last wk, ive had Sinbad, Louie Anderson, Gary Payton n Ryan Kalil (USC football) pass thru my ckpt. Pretty koo 2 b seeing celebs on a daily basis : )

  117. DrEasy says:

OK, so yesterday after days of hesitation I finally dropped Glaus for Aramis, and picked up Mike (oh pardon, Michael) Gonzalez for my DL spot. I think the closer-in-waiting pick-up (especially as a handcuff for Simon) puts this over the edge. Given today’s boxscores, looking good so far! Emoticon!
