The Fantasy Baseball War Room is back!  I’m not saying the Fantasy Baseball War Room is back, as in, is a butt.  So, if Sir Mix-A-Lot is reading, I’m truly sorry for the confusion.  Our Fantasy Baseball War Room is one part draft tool, one part fantasy team evaluator, one part fantasy junkie’s s’s and g’s tool, one part holy, two parts smokes, three parts… How many parts is that so far?  Cause it’s only really seven parts total.  I think there’s one part kill-your-day-with-this-war-room-thing-a-maboob-as-a-pinwheel-spins in there too.  Essentially, this helps you practice building a fantasy baseball team.

If you’re unfamiliar with our Fantasy Baseball War Room, it’s a draft tool to help you track where you are at any moment in a draft.  It shows you if you have too many steals, homers… Or if your ERA or WHIP are too low.  Or too high.  Or if your lamb is still rare or should be turned (results vary on lamb).  If you’ve already drafted a team, go into the War Room, enter your team and it shows you exactly how stacked/dreadful the team is.  If you’re in the middle of a draft, you can filter which guys are left that have the most home runs according to my projections.  Or the most steals, or the most runs or the most whatever (only applicable if “Whatever” is a category in your league).  If you’re in a bind, go into a Warm Room and take a shvitz.  Ah…That’s better!  There might be some bugs in our Fantasy Baseball War Room, just comment here and we’ll look into fixes.  The default projections are mine from the 2017 fantasy baseball rankings.  Also, Rudy’s projections are now up!  They can be found at my ranking page that I just linked to or here:  hitter projections and pitcher projections.  There, you’ll see rankings for every conceivable league (OBP, OPS, Holds, etc).  Anyway, here’s the step by step instructions on how to use the Fantasy Baseball War Room:

  • Sign up. If you get a message that says your email is already in the system and you don’t remember the password, just use a new email or a made-up email.  It doesn’t really matter.  It says to email us to retrieve your password, but I have to be honest, I’m not retrieving shizz.  Repeat, just make a New User and make up a fake email.  We’re not emailing you anyway.
  • Choose what kind of team you want to draft. How many catchers, outfielders, middle infielders, etc. ESPN and Yahoo are for position eligibility. It doesn’t mean you’re playing there. ESPN is 20 games started; Yahoo is 5 started and 10 games played. So that means ESPN and CBS are the same. Or wherever you play that uses 20 or 10 game eligibility.
  • Now as you draft players, click Draft next to their name. If a player is eligible at more than one position, drop down the menu to the position you want them at.  If you can’t find a player, search for them at the top.  As Jeff Francoeur would say, voila!  Or if you’re a Twins fan, Frank Voila!
  • Get as close to the Totals as you can.
  • Wanna start again? Delete the Team, by scrolling to the right of the player search at the top and a down arrow will appear. Click that, then click the pinwheel under ‘Taken” and delete team or sign out. We got pinwheels! Wanna throw your computer out the window from excitement?  Go for it!  For those that missed it in the first bullet point, if you forget your password, Create New User and make up a fake email.  Do not email me.
  • Note from our programmer, Jamil.  If you get this error page, then your shizz is broke and you need to buy a new computer.  But, if you don’t want to buy a new computer, you should clear your cookies and start again.  Likely what happened is you’re logged into the app still from an old version.  Less likely, you still have the same internet cache from last year and haven’t cleared your cookies once in 12 months.  I’m not judging, Cust kayin’.

    Grey!!!

Another Classic Razzball moment! Can’t wait for April 2.

    a. Did you see all the players responding to the calls from their WBC countries? Crazy. Some weird ones.

    1. Yoga gonna pitch for Mexico for the WBC. Well, there goes their chances of winning.
    2. Oh will be the only player not playing currently in Korea for his WBC team.
    3. Freddie Freeman is the oldest player on his WBC roster. Canada won’t go very far so it’ll be a brief appearance for him and then back to ST.

    b. A couple of missions coming today – one of 3 days and another of 5 days. It’ll be fine, but I’ll be happiest when the second one leaves on Friday!

    c. Was watching NBA TV for the highlights from last nights’ games…Shaq is really dumb but Sir Charles Barkley is rapidly approaching him.

    Cheers,
    Ante

Haha on Shaq. I tried to explain to our son the hack a Shaq rule. He just got caught up on how funny the name sounded so every time I tried to bring it up he would hack me like they hacked Shaq.

Anyway, mission is back from the field. I escaped chaperoning them this afternoon. Hopefully it worked out.

Yeah, like legs they dug up? We have livestock/cattle here in Chad, even camels are used for meat. This is one MF carnivorous country. You wouldn’t like it. A buddy of mine is a vegetarian and he finds it really difficult to find a good vegetarian meal.

Anyway, I love lamb+beef so I’ll pig out for sure.

I’m in a keeper draft for guys who lost keeper status. Stats are r,hr,rbi, obp,tb,sb,ops. SP stats are w/qs/k/ip/era/whip/k9. I have all of my hitters and my bench bats are Adrian Gonzalez and Tim Anderson. My 2b is schoop. I have 6 starters, top 2 are price & Carrasco. Who would you take out of these 3: Carlos santana, Kinsler or quintana. Do I take the the better hitters to replace either my 2b or dh/if and add depth or do I take quintana who isn’t sexy but reliable for 200 innings and good stats since I have some risk in my top 2 pitchers. This is a head to head league. Thx

    Morning Grey!

Now that Phillips has been traded to the braves and its assume peraza will be playing every day, will you be updating his projections? Top 10 2b?

      • Big W says:
        (link)

@Grey: Thank you Grey… I see you aren’t buying Peraza getting every day ABs still.

Hypothetically, what would be the projection if he leads off every day and get’s 650 ABs?

        Thanks!

        • Grey

          Grey says:

@Grey: Okay, thanks… I have high hopes for Peraza. Was so excited when Phillips finally got traded. I think Billy and Jose will switch spots in the batting order at some point in April.

@Grey: It’s great! …and while not killing in average too.

Taking a chance with Villar/Peraza up the middle and was hopeful of getting 100 SB between them.

I think Peraza will have much better hitting/on base skills than Hamilton and hoping he shows that early so they do the right thing and get him batting lead off.

  8. RePete says:

Replaced a team in a 14-Team H2H Standard League with added OPS and Holds categories. I have to keep 9 and an additional 2 rookies. My first 6 keepers will be Blackmon, Story, Bregman, Carrasco, McCutchen, and Jansen. There’s only 2 players on the team that are rookie eligible so I also know I’m keeping Swanson and Margot.

1.) Pick three more keepers: B.Hamilton, AGon, Bautista, Grichuk, Teheran, Matz, Gausman, Urias, Nate Jones

2.) First time playing with Holds: Around what pick should I start targeting middle relievers?

    • Grey

      Grey says:

@RePete: Hamilton, Grichuk, Gausman 2. End of the draft-ish…After 200 overall

    • goodfold2 says:
      (link)

@RePete: the more holds guys you start though the earlier i’d grab at least 1 or 2 top notch ones (a.miller/betances etc). you can probably easily leave 75% of your holds guys to the later rounds, but i wouldn’t do all of them that late.

  9. goodfold2 says:

for those who get the error even while cleaning cookies, it’s NO problem (and doesn’t mean your computer is broke). just make up a name for a fake email, i’m up to about goodfold78 by now in this thing. but it still works. you probably will need to clean cookies more than once a day though during peak draft or mock draft season as you use it.

    15 team slow draft.

    Had 5th pick, went Arenado-Freeman.

Now looking at Darvish, Odor, Stanton, Pollock. Bunch of picks after this until my next one (obviously).

What are you thinking? I have my thoughts, want to see if they jive with yours.

    • goodfold2 says:
      (link)

@Lance: grab the pitcher at pick 50 (unless darvish is THAT much better than other pitchers left in 3rd round for you). that lineup speaks to grabbing steals now, but which of the other white fish or odor could depend on whether this is a 5 OF/4 OF/3 OF league. if it’s a 5 i think you have to grab OF now.

        Roto

        5 OF

        Pollock there too

Darvish is the best SP on the board, Arrieta, Lester, etc all gone already.

I’m leaning Darvish cause I’m worried Carrasco won’t be there come my next pick.

I have the two pick in a 10 team roto. I know your pairings havnt come out yet but I’m looking at your projections and there is a 99% chance that Freeman gets to me in Rd 2. Even though you have Goldie ranked ahead of Betts, should I take Betts with a Betts/Freeman combo or take Goldie with Springer or Marte? Which combo would you prefer??

Also, I’m not cheating but I do listen to the CBS podcast during the JB and Grey podcast bye weeks. Which of you guys were in that mock draft? It was cool to hear you guys referenced.

have been floating porcello out there for over a week, even just for a pick. also was trying to move jones for cole. keep 7-9 (for every less than 9 you get a pick in pre main draft rounds), 7×7 holds/QS/XBH/OPS. 1250 max innings and 5 RP owned at all times (unless you can find a SP/RP then it’d be 6). 20 team roto.

    C sanchez
    1B carpenter (or 3B)
    2B cano
    SS treat urner
    3B
OF (3) cargo 1, piscotty, dahl
    util (1) a.jones
    SP lackey
the guy who i thought was ignoring me just got back saying he’ll do porcello for c-sant. i know on it’s face this is good deal, but
with that roster would you rather do:
    1. trade porcello for c-sant, drop a.jones, keep lackey(assuming no jones for pick can be done)
    2. trade porcello for c-sant, drop lackey, keep jones (this is ridiculously risky in roto league, as my first SP of any kind would come at pick 59 (less than that due to keepers, anybody keeping 8 or 9 wouldn’t have 2 draft picks bfore main draft)
    3. trade jones for cole, and only do the porcello for c-sant IF i can do the cole deal first.
    4. trade jones for cole, don’t do porcello for c-sant, keep either cole while drafting at pick 22nd overall or keep lackey and cole while keeping both and starting draft at pick 59. i realize this one hinges on what level of SP would be around at pick 22nd, which i don’t know yet.

Grey, my man, happy whatever today is! Longtime listener, second time caller. Got a SP strategy related question for ya:

I know you advise erbody to wait on top end SPs in mixed leagues, but does that philosophy change in an “only” league? It seems that the SP depth is stripped away pretty significantly, which would make it tough to keep up with the teams that own the Kershaw/Scherzer types. Your thoughts would be appreciated, thanks!

    Hey Grey,

Need another point of view here. 12-team H2H keeper league. 8 keepers.

So far, I’m definitely keeping Rizzo, Arenado, Miggy, Baez (invested a lot and love the upside and position flexibility), Scherzer, Darvish, deGrom.

Just have to pick one more keeper from the following options: Maeda, Schoop, A. Miller (love the numbers but not the role) or Melancon.

A few of the elite closers will be kept so won’t be available. Schoop has the biggest power and upside out of available 2B. Maeda would give me 4 top pitchers (overkill I know) and wouldn’t have to think about starting pitchers until WAYYYY later in the draft.

    What do you think?

Im glad to see the war room is back!

    I have a question regarding keepers. I’m in a 12 Team CBS H2H Points – Weekly Lineups
    C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, CI, 3OF, 2U
    6SP, 2RP per week

Points: Hitting is standard, +2 for SB, no penalty for Ks.
    Pitching: +1 for K, IP
    -1 for ER, BB
    +5 for QS
    +10 for W
    -5 for L
    +7.5 for SV

Keep 3-5 (years they can be kept is listed). Each consecutive year they are kept decreases by a round. So next year, Trumbo would be a 13th round keeper. Free agents cost a 10th round (if two are kept then I forfeit the 10th and 9th and so on

    B. Dozier – Rd 3. 1 Year
    J. Arrieta Rd 4 1 Year
    S. Marte Rd 7 1 year
David Dahl Rd. 10 2 Year
Jake Lamb Rd. 10 2 Year
    M. Trumbo Rd 14. 3 Years
    J. Hammel Rd. 15 3 years
AJ Pollock Rd 17 2 years

Hey Grey. Another season… Another season I’m going to be hooked on Razzbal.
13 team Roto. Keep 12 forever plus 2 additional NA spots (less than 130 ABs)

I have been offered Trea Turner for
Mazara, Moncada (I still have Brinson, Josh Bell and A. Meadows to fill my 2 NA spots) and my first round pick.

Pull the trigger or hold. I have a ton of upside guys. Dahl, Bregman, Harper, Kepler, Myers, Tim Anderson – so if I don’t contend, I should be set up well for next year.

    Thanks in advance.

Pitcher draft strategy question for ya:

In a 12 team daily H2H (categories) with QS and W, when drafting, how many SPs would you target as “draft and roster all season” guys v. streamer guys? 3 waiver grabs per week, each team typically rosters about 8 SPs at a time.

I’m toying with the idea of putting 75-80% of my auction budget into hitters, grabbing 2 top 12-20 pitchers, 1 Edwin Diaz type, then rolling with a mix of $1-$2 upsiders and boring guys the rest of the way.

    A little too extreme?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I think you’re thinking too far in future… I’d want all my guys draft and hold, but it doesn’t work that way so you go with it as season goes…

      • Duda Want to Build a Snowman? says:

@Grey: Good advice. I could see myself quickly screwing myself over with this strategy if my one or two legit pitchers go south.

            (link)

@Grey: Yeah, I’d much prefer to spend my 25-30% of the budget or so on a staff headlined by C-Mart or Duffy + Maeda and rounded out by the hopefully $3-$8 guys like Cullers, Nola, Pineda, Paxton, Shoemaker, Nova, etc.

I typically target Rizzo in this league, but Freeman and Santana both seem like they’re projected to do what Rizzo’s doing (.370+ obp, .850+ OPS, ~30 HR, 5-7 SB, 90-100 R and RBI), no?

Would you keep 3 bats and 1 pitcher or 4 bats?

My goal is to draft a top 3B, SS and OF. But do I aim for a 1B or 2B too instead of a potential top 10 pitcher?

My guess is most guys will keep 3 bats and a pitcher with a few keeping 4 bats, what would you do?

  34. ebudz says:
    (link)

hey Grey remember me?! you helped me win my h2h points league the past 2 years thanks to your all advice in these comments!

maybe it’s too early but i want to make sure i’ll be drafting the right way this year so what strategy should i be using for my h2h points league:

10 team (3 keeper) ESPN H2H Points (weekly 12 start pitcher limit)

    Hitter Scoring: HIT (+1), RUN (+1), RBI (+1), 2B (+1), 3B (+2), HR (+3), BB (+1) SB (+1)
    Pitcher Scoring: WIN (+3), LOSS (-3), IP (+3), K (+1), BB (-1), SAVE (+3), HOLD (+1), ER (-2), HIT (-1), SO (+3), NH (+10), PG (+15)

it’s also important to note that we can keep up to 3 keepers which consume draft picks in the first 3 rounds and as of right now my old team looks like this:

    (1) C: Posey
    (1) 1B: Abreu
    (1) 2B: Odor
    (1) SS: Correa
    (1) 3B: Seager
    (3) OF: Harper, Braun, Polanco
    (1) UT: J.D. Martinez
    Bench: Stanton

    (1) DL: n/a

    (4) SP: Carrasco, Price, Salazar, Duffy
    (3) RP: Robertson, Osuna, Giles
    (5) Bench: (streamers)

so my idea was to keep harper, correa and maybe odor? and then just pick the highest available player based on your ranks through the draft? or am i on my own because it’s a points league and not roto?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

What’s up, ebudz? Yeah, Harper, Correa and Odor and then highest bat, then an SP and you’re off

      • ebudz says:
        (link)

@Grey: just procrastinating shoveling! but word that sounds good! thanks!

also this question might have an obvious answer after reading your ranks but believe it or not there might be an orphan team that i can take over instead that already has goldy and altuve on it so if given the opportunity should i start with that team this year instead of the one above? i can’t see the rest of that roster yet so not sure if there’s anyone else worth keeping as a third keeper but are those bats + a best available third round pick better then harper, correa, and odor?

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

Just wait til spring, the snow will melt… Yeah, I’d want Goldy/Altuve

          • ebudz says:
            (link)

@Grey: hahaha i wish spring was here already!

and yes i was leaning towards doing that plus if i don’t keep a 3rd keeper then maybe there’s a chance i still draft someone in your top 20 with that 3rd pick from non-kept players? like miggy (hopefully not kept), turner, odor, freeman, springer, blackmon, marte, desmond, etc… not sure how likely that is and it might be the jazz cabbage talking about assuming i start with goldy/altuve then it’s still a good idea to draft another infielder there right who can play UTIL? worst case i start building my OF out of those guys hopefully?

            • Grey

              Grey says:
              (link)

Jazz cabbage is my new favorite expression… A SS or OF would be fine with Goldy/Altuve…Don’t take another 2B or 1B immediately

              • ebudz says:
                (link)

@Grey: ha! glad you enjoyed that!

and what about taking turner then assuming he’s 2B/OF eligible in ESPN? or would it still be better to go with a SS or different OF instead? sorry for all the hypothetical questions!

    for a
$15 Nolan Arrenado, $15 Starling Marte, $20 Ian Desmond

Other five keepers would be – Machado, Harper, Stanton, K. Seager and a flyer on Buxton. If keeping Trout, still would also have Justin Turner and Chris Archer at $10 to keep.

Can keep 6 players (max 4 batters). Here are my players I’m considering and the draft round they’ll be kept at (i.e. the later the round the better my value; if 2 kept players at the same round it bumps one of them up a round; 23 round draft).. please assist:

Hey Grey – in a keep 7 forever league, which side do you like in these trades?

    A. $20 Machado or $3 Moncada and $18 Yu

    B. $20 Springer or $3 Moncada

    Thanks!

Cam Bedrosian currently is being credited with 60 wins in the War Room. I am no historian or anything but wouldn’t that be, like, a record or something?

Maybe I misunderstood. Are there the final statistics from 1000s Yahoo roto baseball leagues available somewhere for Fantasy Master Lotharios such as yourself to pull those averages?

Since reading this site, I’ve been three for three in my fantasy league. So thanks for that. Also, it’s made me overconfident and for the first time I’ve joined a friends 16 team (!), 9×8 (!), $200 entry fee (!) H2H league that he’s been asking me to join for a while. So, um, thanks for my future divorce too. :)

Anyway, I wanted a second opinion to see if my gut was right about pitching in this new league. The nine pitching categories are:

    ERA Earned Run Average
    HD Holds
    INN Innings
    K-BB Strikeouts Minus Walks
    QS Quality Starts
    S Saves
    W-L Wins Minus Losses
WHIP Walks + Hits / Inning

You set your lineup daily and you start 5 pitchers daily (either 3 SP and 2 RP or 2 SP and 3 RP). When I look at those eight categories and reflect on it being a 16 team league, my gut says to punt saves just roster SPs and quality relievers. What are your thoughts?

    • Grey

      Grey says:

Haha, meh, who needs wives? I agree with your strategy… you can dominant with great MRs and decent SPs

Always good to hear your thoughts. Thanks.

Two more questions. In this league, you can keep 7 – 13 players. Before the real draft, there is a mini-draft to make sure each team has thirteen players. As I’m taking over the team that finished last last year, I would get first crack in the mini-draft, UNLESS I keep more than 7 (e.g. – if I kept 8 players, I don’t get that first eighth round pick — consider it around 112 overall). So my thinking is to only keep seven to ensure I get first crack each round of the mini draft as it’s not a snake draft. I’ve listed potential keepers below and was wondering if a.) I have the right keepers and b.) if I should keep more than 7. The offensive categories are:

        BA Batting Average
        HR Home Runs
        KO Strikeouts (Batter)
        OBP On Base Pct
        R Runs
        RBI Runs Batted In
        SB Stolen Bases
SDT Singles + Doubles + Triples
        TB Total Bases

Daily, you start one player at each position and there are 3 OF (no UTIL, MI, CI, etc.)

        Potential keepers:
        Mookie Betts
        Joey Votto
        AJ Pollack
        Corey Kluber
        David Price
        Max Kepler
        Dansby Swanson
        Marcus Semien
        Brad Miller
        Domingo Santana
        Micheal Pineda
        Steven Matz
        Micheal Conforto
        Jim Johnson
        Brad Maurer
        Alex Dickerson

I was thinking of just keeping the first seven, but I wonder about Matz, Pineda, and Santana, Semien (especially since the vasectomy), and Miller, but I worry about BA, OBP, and batting strikeouts. Does it not matter than much in a 9 category hitting league? Am I only keeping Swanson since you can keep seven to thirteen players every year and even if I think he’s gonna be average this year, he could be a stud keeper down the road? What to do?

Help! To make a short question out of a longish post — how many would you keep? And which ones?

Bonus — would you trade Corey Kluber and David Price for Trea Turner and Kenta Madea in this league?

        Thanks so much.

@Brian: wow… that was a lot to digest. I know you were asking Grey but I’ll throw my 2 cents in. #1. I would keep those 1st 7 and #2. I would take that trade since you need the young players and expect a tough year either way. Price is that blind horse and who wants to rise on a blind horse?
