Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Yesterday, I went over the top 100 for fantasy baseball in the 2nd half.  Today, I’ll look at some 2nd half hitters who should be better than they were in the first half.  To come up with this list, I scoured the last three years of post-All-Star Break numbers, ran it through a supercomputer that’s bigger than your Peugeot, pasted the supercomputer-generated names to my shirt like dollar bills on a wedding dress then went to a palm reader to help me pick ten names out of the thousands.  The palm reader’s name was Erica Karabell.  Tomorrow, I’ll go over the fantasy baseball pitchers who have been notoriously stronger in the 2nd half.  Anyway, here’s the best 2nd half fantasy baseball hitters for 2009:

Mike Napoli – Last year, he led the United States and Canada in OPS after the break for hitters with more than 100 ABs.  Vlad the ’97 Impaler and Torii are both hurting, which will help Napoli see more time.

Alex Rodriguez – Everyone’s favorite frosted hair 3rd baseman.  Hit 24 homers in 263 ABs in the 2007 2nd half.  Hit 16 homers in 2008.

Jimmy Rollins – In 2007, he swiped 26 bags in the 2nd half.  Last year, Rollins had the third most steals in the 2nd half (23) behind only Taveras and Reyes.

Carlos Pena – 26 homers in 2007’s 2nd half.  17 homers in the 2nd half last year.  This year I say he hits 15 to give him 39 for the year.  Why?  Cause Pena seems like a 39 homer guy.  Yes, it’s that scientific.

Pat Burrell – In the first half of 2007, Burrell looked done — hitting .215 and only 11 homers.  In the 2nd half, he hit 19 homers and .295.  There’s very few cheap outfielders that can hit 20 homers in the 2nd half.  Burrell’s one.  And as any girl from the University of Miami in the late 90s will tell you, whereever Burrell is, Huff’s not far behind…

Aubrey Huff – Hey, it’s Pat the Bat’s fingercuff partner.  In 2007 and 2008, Huff had a .686 and .875 OPS in the 1st half, respectively.  Then .897 and .964 in the 2nd half.

Alex Rios – Did you know that after Pujols Rios hit the most extra base hits in the 2nd half last year?  Stephen Drew (<– Bonus name!) was third.  Both in front of Manny’s crazy, hormonal-fueled 2nd half.

Luke Scott – Career pre-All-Star break numbers .241/.329/.461 — Post-All-Star break numbers .299/.386/.558.  I see it now, next March someone in the comments is going to say, “I’m punting outfielders and taking Luke Scott late.  I’m awesome!!!”

Ty Wigginton – Honestly, not even sure if he’ll get playing time.  So I’m not saying trade for him, but if he’s on waivers, play close attention.  In the last three seasons, his 2nd half OPSs have been .990, .841 and .915, respectively.

Adam LaRoche – What’s Dusty Baker without a 1st base, 3rd base, hitting, pitching and bench coach?  What would a list of post-All-Star break hitters be without Adam LaRoche?  Nada, nada, nada damn thing…

I know, I know, you’re sick of my Haren questions, but he should get Rollins, no? Wanwiright or Bills would do the trick too I’d imagine, but I’d rather hang on to them.

  2. inertiatic says:
    (link)

Is there a worse feeling in the world than being stuck with LaRoche as your 1B? I think not.

  3. Kris says:
    (link)

Great follow up, and I just wanted to thank you for the site, Grey. I’m in 3rd place in my league with Reyes and Beltran sitting on my bench laughing at me (note to self…no more drafting players from your real team in the first 2 rounds). This would not be possible without you and Rudy’s efforts, and I wanted to say I truly appreciate what you guys do here. Fantasy baseball was significantly less entertaining before I found this site in March.

  4. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)

@Steve: does rollins’ owner have a SS to plug in? is he gonna be stuck with evereth at SS or does he have a reasonable replacement? i know rollins hasn’t been much thus far, but not many SSs have, so most rollins owners (like myself) are holding him better that even a hot month or 2 will make him more valuable than all but 3-4 SSs.

  5. Racehorse says:
    (link)

I drafted Adama LaRoche for my roto team for the express purpose of taking advantage of his annual post all-star break-Lou Gehrig impersonation. While I did get some mileage out of him with spot starts during the season’s first half (including his hot June when I ran him out everyday), I’m now stuck in 5th place in my league and need LaRoche to really do his thing the second half. I’ll end up either a LaGenius or LaRoached.

  6. Mike says:

What’s the all-star break if ya ain’t knockin’ boots?

  7. Art Vandelay says:
    (link)

Grey – how far out of your top 100 would you put Lind? Expecting him to come back down to earth in the second half? I’m thinking it may be time to move him to someone hurting for power. Thanks.

  8. Frank Rizzo says:
    (link)

I’m hoping on Huff. Another guy I’ve just got a feeling about in the 2nd half is Milton Bradley. Supposedly he’s claiming now that he’s found the problem in his swing and he’s back now and about to start hitting again. He’s a FA in our league and I’m watching him pretty hard. We all know he’s capable of ridiculous spurts of stats.

  9. Pro Beach says:
    (link)

What about Nick the Stick? Another 2nd half guy, but is it time for me to bail on hopes of .300/30 with 15 SBs?

I have an opportunity in a H2H keeper league to trade Markakis/N.Morgan/M.Latos for N.Cruz/B.J. Upton/Nolasco.

The trade seems like a no-brainer for this season, I am just scared I am sabotaging my 2010 season by cutting bait on Markakis. It is a points league, and strikeouts are -1, so I am also not too thrilled about BJ’s 99 k’s so far, and Cruz and Nolasco are about as streaky as it gets, which can kill you in H2H.

    Thoughts? Anyone?

  10. mgeoffriau

Rank these OFers: Reimold, Cody Ross, Burrell.

Also — any expectation that Kyle Blanks will start hitting, or should I start looking for my next schmohawk 1B/OF?

  11. bobbo says:
    (link)

Who do you like better for the rest of the season: Magglio or Garret Jones?

Neither would be a starter on my team… just looking for lightening in a bottle (BJ Upton, Ibanez, Pence, Ethier, Adam Jones, Beltran already at OF).

  12. I'm Keith Hernandez says:
    (link)

@Steve: Don’t trade HAren for Rollins. Haren’s value is sky high right now, even with an expected decline. I would try Wainwright.

  13. knighttown says:
    (link)

All right gents, it comes down to this. I’ve got a guy I can’t shake at 93 points in an 11-teamer and I’m at 90. No one else is over 70. I need to know whether I have the horses to beat this guy or do I need to be aggressive on the trade front.

    SP:
Me: Oswalt, Vazquez, Weaver, Jackson, Scherzer, Hanson, Harden , Kuroda (+90IP)

  14. Nathan says:
    (link)

Thinking about offerring Wright and Dunn (in an OBP league) for Teixiera and Figgins. What do you think about that deal?

Also, what kind of second half do you think Garrett Atkins will have? Thought I was being clever by trading for him very cheaply a month ago.

  15. bobbo says:
    (link)

@knighttown: It’s really hard to tell without knowing the category standings. You need to know where you can gain points easily and where he can lose points. Without knowing any of that, it’s sort of impossible to tell. I do like your offense much more, but I think he’s got you in pitching. If you aren’t leading the offensive categories, I think you have a good chance of adding some points there in the 2nd half. However, if he isn’t doing so hot in the pitching categories, I also look for him to be able to raise his standings there more than you in the 2nd as it stands. Hope that helps.

  16. bobbo says:
    (link)

@Nathan: I don’t really like that trade unless you can really add some points with Figgins’ steals.

  17. Dingo says:
    (link)

@knighttown: Without knowing your ranking in each category so far, it’s tough to judge your roster, but I’m guessing that you’re ahead in most offensive categories but behind in pitching ones. Your offense is stacked (especially for HRs), while your SPs could be a bit better. I’d try moving Fielder or Teixeira for a stud SP, or maybe try a 2 for 2, like Fielder + Harden for Blalock + SP.

  18. wubbawubba says:
    (link)

I could trade Zimmerman right now for Carlos Pena. Maybe get Huff too with the right throw in. Is it worth the risk? (Zim can be kept next year, Pena can’t.) Pena would replace Zim at DH. Points league. Current totals: Pena 334, Zim 307. Should I could I would I? Gracias.

  19. Nathan says:
    (link)

@bobbo: Just curious, what about it don’t you like? Wright isn’t hitting for power and is getting fewer RBI and R opportunities hitting in the middle of that Replacement Level Mets Lineup.

  20. bobbo says:
    (link)

@Nathan: It just seems a bit like you’re selling low on Wright. I know he isn’t hitting for power right now, but he at least has the possibility to. Figgins does not. Also, once Beltran and Delgado come back I think Wright can only get better. Dunn and Tex will probably hit comparable HR’s from here on out, so really the only huge upgrade I see would be in SB. If that’s going to net you 4-5 standings points then I’d consider the trade. Otherwise, I’d rather bank on a Wright resurgence in the 2nd half.

  21. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@Steve: He could get you Rollins, probably could get you more.

@inertiatic: I kinda agree with you, but he is better in the 2nd half.

@Kris: Thanks for the kind words!

    @Racehorse: LaGenius – Ha!

    @Mike: Hehe

@Art Vandelay: Thinking since he’s at 19 HRs now, and I can’t imagine much more than 30, so 11 homers in the 2nd half. He was just outside the top 100. In fact, I wrote his name then added in Bourn, I believe and had to remove him.

@Frank Rizzo: He’s capable of ridiculous spurts of other things too.

@Pro Beach: Swisher has batted and slugged less in the 2nd half the last three years. I’d want the Upton side.

@mgeoffriau: Those are all the same hitter pretty much. Burrell, Reimold, Ross…. But if one’s hot then they change. I’d lose Blanks if you have options on the wire.

@bobbo: Jones, but he’s not an option for the whole season.

@knighttown: You’re going to beat him. Hope Volquez returns and pitches poorly.

@Nathan: Atkins might do something, but he has to play. That trade’s okay if you’re dying for steals but I do think you can get steals cheaper than Figgy. So Tex to Wright, you win. Dunn to Figgy, you lose unless steals are a big factor.

@wubbawubba: I’m not crazy about in in a keeper.

  22. Pro Beach says:
    (link)

Grey – I might have mislead you –

I meant Markakis, N. Morgan and Latos for Cruz/BJ/Nolasco

    Not Nick Swisher.

Still like the Upton side? H2H points league, keeper league.

  23. mgeoffriau

    mgeoffriau says:
    (link)

@Grey: Thanks! I’m going to hold onto Reimold and Ross unless Burrell shows signs of heating up. And I dropped Blanks for Garrett Jones.

  24. Pro Beach says:
    (link)

@wubbawubba – I would hold on to Zimmerman.

What do you think about my question since you are also a points league guy?

  25. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@Pro Beach: Sorry, thought you had two separate questions, one about Swisher and one about Markakis. I’d still want the Upton side.

@Pro Beach – I prefer the Upton side. Latos is a wild card.

  29. Gubbins says:
    (link)

Dunn and Scherzer for Ichiro and Hanson? Categories are hits, runs, SB, RBI, OBP, SLG.

I really like Scherzer, but Hanson has had decent results from some pretty tough matchups so far: NYY, BOS, @COL, MIL.

  30. @Grey: How much faith do you have in Hamilton for the second half? Is he worth Gallardo? Billingsley?

If I have to throw in an OF, would you add Dye? Holliday?

  31. @Baron Von Vulturewins: Put another way, the guy I’m dealing with needs pitching and has a surplus of OF. He has:

    Markakis
    Adam Jones
    Ludwick
    Hamilton
Luke Scott (yes, the entire O’s OF. Did I mention he’s in last place?)

Who should I target first? He wants Billingsley, I also have Gallardo. (And Slowey.) Is Markakis worth Bills? I need donks, bad. I’m kind of intrigued by Glass Hamilton’s upside.

    @johnson21: I wouldn’t start him anywhere.

    @Scott: Lowrie

  39. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@Mr Baseball: Ah… Was wondering what his name plus a question mark meant.

  40. @Grey: Agreed. I just made the case to the guy to take gallardo, not bills, and ran this comparison which is interesting:

    Bills: 9W, 3.38 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 119K
    Gallardo: 8 W, 3.22 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 123K

Pretty much interchangeable so far. Though Bills has the better track record, it’s true.

    what do you think?

  42. Paul Wilson says:

  43. Paul Wilson says:

@black love Drop. The flexibility of an empty roster spot is more valuable than the shard of hope that Hart will suddenly come around.

  44. @ grey: have been offered drew for wainwright…id much rather trade garza than ww, but he really wants ww and thats the sticking point….would you stick to your guns and keep ww over garza or are they very similar as is for the second half….i just traded haren so am thinking ww can be my new ace and am also kinda set for offense too but have e.cabrera SS and dont mind the upgrade

    what are your thoughts? thanks

  45. Grey

    Grey says:

    Thoughts?

  48. ThePoonTycoon says:

I just traded Quentin/Zobrist for BJ Upton/Scutaro. I’m not really thrilled about Scutaro but I can plug Stewart into the MI slot from U and put BJ Upton in the OF, sliding the Dread Pirate into the U.

    Lineup is now:
    C: Salty, RHernandez
    1B: Fielder
    2B: Phillips
    SS: Drew
    3B: Wright
    CI: Votto
    MI: Stewart
OF: Kemp, BJ Upton, Rios, Victorino, Ludwick
    U: McCutcheon
SP: CBills, Josh Johnson, Wainwright, Shields, Washburn, Wolf, Randy Wells, Correia, Hammels, Smoltz
    RP: FCordero, Downs, Rodney
    BN: Taveras

Before I hear about being stacked, it’s a 10-teamer. I’m currently in 2nd place but 16.5 points out of the lead.

  50. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@GTS: Eh, I wouldn’t do that, but it could work out for you.

@PhillyYorker: Why Hughes? For Holds? You can get Holds off waivers.

  51. PhillyYorker says:
    (link)

I guess I need to be disabused of the notion. But his last 7 outings he has amassed 4 holds. I have found that holds per innings is the best ratio to use when judging holds pitchers. 1 hold for every 2 innings seems to be the gold standard. If Hughes is gonna be a regular late inning pitcher he might just gain the most holds in the second half of any pitcher (due to Yankees winning more often than others). Plus, he has SP/RP designation in Yahoo which will allow me to amass more holds in a shorter amount of time. I think I lose less replacing Lind with Ross than I gain having an extra holds guy everyday. Ah, tough choices.

Bay and Cueto for Kemp and Qualls?

Bay and Cueto for Markakis and Howell?

@Tom: Burrell if you don’t need Stewart’s eligibility. I’d take Kemp’s side, then I’d take the Bay side in the 2nd one.

    Odd deal: Bay/McCutchen/Stewart for J.Upton/Lind/Wuertz?

@Tom: I’d take the Bay side.

@G: I’d go with Cook out of those two.

    @Martin: I am.

@Grey: You starting Wandy at LA tomorrow?

I’m thinking no but I don’t think well on sleep deprivation.

  96. Steve says:

@BigFatHippo: You should. I can tell you from bitter experience that the Dodgers score f***-all runs for the Wolfman.

ibanez/chipper for crawford is a no brainer right? i need steals and chipper doesn’t make my lineup.

So… this guy in my league has a huge man crush on Mark Teixeira. So much so, he offered me this trade for him:

Mark Teixeira and Rafael Furcal for Miguel Cabrera

I have Alexei Ramirez in at SS and have Chone Figgins at MI, while Furcal has been on my bench for a while now… DO OR DO NOT???

  99. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Martin: Burrell, Willingham…

    @BigFatHippo: I am starting him.

    @paulzone: Yeah, Crawford’s side.

@Joe B: Sure, you can take Miggy there. It’s not exactly a huge slam dunk for you though.

  100. BigFatHippo says:

@Steve: Haha, but they might score a fuck of a lot off Wandy……………

    I’m torn.

@Grey: Dammit, there you go making me think on my own again.

OK, but remember, I have access to some stealth shizz now. I will hunt you down…………….

  102. Steve says:
    (link)

@BigFatHippo: Nah. The entire Dodger offence and bullpen hates the Wolfman and thus does nothing to help him – regardless of who the opposing starter is.
I have Wandy in my H2H and I’m starting him but in a short week I don’t have much choice.

Could I get anyone’s thoughts on Morneau’s usual 2nd half stats. Looks to me like he takes a bit of a dive in power and avg. Any thoughts on if that is a possibility again, and maybe I should maximize his value now?

Hey Grey, after reading the section on Napoli I would like your opinion: I bought the Wieters hype and he has not done much. Still feel like he will get better, but for the rest of the season H2H 10 teamer, should I stick with Wieters or drop him for Napoli? Thanks for your help.

  108. Grey

    Grey says:

@Robert: Depends what you can get for him, but I’m not too worried.

@Steve: Ha, what are you smoking?

    @Martin: Burrell

    @Robert: I’d hold tight.

@Grey: I’m smoking hot if that’s what you mean.

Don’t know if would allow myself to trade Morneau, but a guy offered me F. Hernandez and Soria for him a few weeks ago and then retracted the offer before I could even think about it. If I could get him to give me F.Hernandez and Sandoval for Morneau, is that a deal that I make? I would still have Votto for 1st base.

@Robert: If you need a pitcher and a catcher, then it’s fair. I’d prefer Morneau.

@big o: You can offer him both, I don’t think he goes for it.

    Strategy/Probability/Bleh Question:
I have Jake Fox, Garrett Jones and Josh Willingham on my bench in a daily dynasty league. Should I do a 2-for-1 to obtain solid past performers like Burrell or Huff,
OR I got a greater probability to have a hot hitter by trying keep those three as long as I can?
I will have Quentin and Reyes coming off DL in the future(or never?), but I will deal with that later.
Thanks for any kind strategy, advice, or bleh in advance.
