Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Yesterday’s short schedule day reminded me of an old Chinese proverb.  Since a lot of you don’t speak Chinese, I’ll translate it for you.  If you can grab a hitter or two on a short schedule day, you should.  In bed.  I’d take a season of 0-for-4’s from my one day hitter pickups just for that outside chance I get one homer.  There is nothing more rewarding in fantasy, except maybe the one day pitcher grabs that nets you solid ratios and a Win.  Those are kinda sweet too.  So I decided to look at some guys that are probably owned in less than 50% of most leagues who could get you some value in fantasy baseball.  Because it’s just under two months into the season, a lot of names listed are fluky.  For instance, Luke Scott gets hot for 7 games and they’re all at home then suddenly he’s the best home slugger.  Most times picking up a hitter for one day really is about the hitter vs. pitcher matchups, but sometimes more general situations matter.  Anyway, here’s some potential hitter pickups for one day in fantasy baseball:

Best Hitters vs. Lefties – Francisco Cervelli.  Batting .483 in 45 ABs.  As I once told my girlfriend, it may be a small sample size, but it packs a powerful punch.  Some other names to look at include:  Cristian Guzman, Marcus Thames and Orlando Cabrera.

Best Hitters vs. Righties – Mike Aviles.  Hitting .440, but it’s only through 50 ABs.  Of course most of the top hitters vs. righties are just the top hitters overall.  Some other names to consider are Eric Hinske, Ryan Hanigan and John Jaso Jingleheimer Schmidt.

Best Hitters at Home – Miguel Olivo.  Putting up some serious home/away splits through the first two months of the season.  As with the good righty hitters, home hitters tend to just be good hitters, but some other names are Cristian Guzman, Marlon Byrd, David Freese and Cody Ross.

Best Hitters in Away Games – Jeff Keppinger. .350+ away, .250+ home.  And that may be the only time Keppinger is mentioned in a favorable light on the blog.  Some other players are Francisco Cervelli, Austin Kearns and Ramon Santiago.  Wow, that’s a sexy list.

Best Sluggers in Away Games – Mike Napoli.  A lot of catchers on this list so far and Rod Barajas, who I sometimes call Rob Darajas, is another name that appears.  But picking up a catcher on a short schedule day usually isn’t ideal because they tend to sit, so here’s some other names:  Austin Kearns, Kosuke Fukudome and Jim Thome.

Best Sluggers at Home – Luke Scott.  I ignored Miguel Olivo because he was mentioned already and there’s already enough catchers on this list of names.  Some other names are Seth Smith, Josh Willingham and Brennan Boesch.

    Just missed the deadline on this comment-

    A guy in my h2h needs R and SB, and I have Gardner. Whom of the following should I target if I want to net a SP: Gallardo, Weaver, Hamels? Or just stand pat?

    Hey Grey, apologies if you’ve answered this elsewhere, but the Rockies have recalled Iannetta. Choose my adventure: keep Olivio on my team; grab Napoli and set it and forget it; or grab Iannetta? Thanks!

    Would you trade Billingsley for Torii? My outfield is putrid right now with Quentin, Pence and (fill in hot pick-up). I have sufficient pitching to bridge the gap with a loss of Billingsley.

    @ThePoonTycoon: @Grey: Thanks, dudes.

    Anyone have any opinions about Takahashi? Is he gonna stay in the Mets rotation? Did he dominate the Yankees just because I talked trash about another fbb site’s analysis of their OPS v. lefties being like .30 less than righties, and the universe likes to humble me? Is he a better speculative grab than Tillman?

  12. Adam says:

    So somebody in my league (Hi Sam, I know you read these) dropped Nyger Morgan.

    Interesting… in a 12 team league there’s never much tempting on the waiver wires for speed. What do we think of Morgan?

    SAGNOF, Schmohawk, SAGHawk?

  14. Adam says:

    @uncdrew: Is he still hitting leadoff? If so, he could be a bit more than a typical SAGNOF, throwing in a good bit of runs and AVG with his steals…he carried my team for a few weeks last summer

    Set-up guys:

    Coffey, Bard, Moylan

    Closers:

    Cordero, Marmol, Corpas

    Buchholz and Motte are on the wire (same thing with the Oriols relievers). Leaning towards Motte. What to do?

  18. GopherDay says:
    (link)

    @Grey: My bad….makes no difference though, you answered my question. Thanks!!

    @Grey: Apparently the Red Sox are somewhat interested in Iannetta as their “Catcher of the future.” That would inflate his value!! Do you know when V-Mart’s contract is up?

  19. ViagraFalls says:
    (link)

    Is it safe to trust Carlos Pena today @Boston against Lester considering he hits over .300 off him and an OPS of 1.215? I have been benching him for a while because of his obvious poor play, but along with his demotion in the hitting order came some HR’s and perhaps a slight turning of the corner.

    I have been bumping Cantu up into 1B with Pena on the bench, and Cantu has done fairly well. But if Pena is going to start hitting again, I don’t want to miss it…don’t want my team BA brought down by him either. So should I let Pena bat today, or keep him benched, keep Cantu at 1B and bump another hitter from my bench into the Utility spot?

  20. Art Vandelay says:

    @royce!: I’d prefer him over Tillman, just because of the NL and better matchups.

    @Adam: You need SBs and you’re benching Ellsbury? I wouldn’t.

    @uncdrew: SAGNOF

    @Donnie Baseball: I’ll go over him in tomorrow’s roundup. Kinda eh outside of NL-Only, unless he gets hot.

    @Terrence Mann: Not even sure of the question. I’d own Buchholz.

    @GopherDay: 2011 Free Agent

    @ViagraFalls: I’d start Pena.

    RHP Chris Tillman could be promoted from Class AAA Norfolk to take the rotation spot of RHP David Hernandez in time for Saturday’s start in Toronto, The Sun reported. Tillman was in the hunt for final rotation spot in spring training and ultimately lost out to Hernandez. Tillman struggled early with Norfolk, but he has regained his top-prospect presence within the organization. He is 4-4 with a 3.31 ERA in nine starts. Tillman likely will get the top nod because he’s already on the 40-man roster, unlike fellow RHP Jake Arrieta

  28. Hi Grey — I know you said earlier you’d lean toward Meredith over Ohman for the temporary Baltimore closers’ gig, but most of the news stories since then seem to indicate they think Ohman’s the O’s Man. Does that turn of phrase work?

    Anyway, I’ve noticed it’s all based on speculation — all the stories seem to stem from an MLB.com blogger and not from anyone with the team.

    My question: I’m desperate for saves in my 20-team league and can pick up just one of those guys … which would you pick at this point?

  29. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Enrique: It did work. It’s a coin flip at this point. I think it’ll depend on whether the O’s are facing lefties in the 9th. Chances are they’ll be facing righties, hence my Meredith tendencies.

Your coin toss remark confirmed my thoughts, and in looking over the two records, it just seemed Ohman was the better pitcher. A handful of saves a la Alfredo Simon would be nice, though ….

    NJ man admits to vomit assault at Phillies game -UPDATE

    A 21-year-old New Jersey man pleaded guilty Tuesday to vomiting on another spectator and his 11-year-old daughter in the stands during a Philadelphia Phillies game.

    Matthew Clemmens, of Cherry Hill, N.J., pleaded guilty to one count each of simple assault, disorderly conduct and harassment for his conduct during an April 14 Phillies-Nationals game at Citizens Bank Park.

    Clemmens stuck his fingers down his throat and vomited on Michael Vangelo, an off-duty Easton police captain, and one of Vangelo’s daughters after Clemmens’ companion was ejected from the park, Assistant District Attorney Patrick Doyle said.

    Clemmens and his friend were spilling beer, cursing and heckling Vangelo and his daughters from the time they arrived at their seats, according to a statement of facts read in court.

    Vangelo’s 15-year-old daughter asked the pair to stop the profanity, and Vangelo complained to security that Clemmens’ friend was spitting, with some of it hitting his 11-year-old daughter, Doyle said.

    After the friend was ejected, Clemmens was sitting alone behind the Vangelos when he answered his cell phone and said, “I need to do what I need to do. I’m going to get sick,” the prosecutor said.

    Clemmens then put his fingers down his throat and threw up on the father, with some vomit splashing onto Vangelo’s younger daughter, Doyle said.

    @mauledbypandas: Yes, he did.

    Hey Grey Rickie Weeks just became available. Should I pick him up and drop Beckham. I have Cano as well and I am kind of platooning at 3rd.

    So, I trade Vlady and Oswalt for Ryan Howard. First day out of my lineup he hits 2 jacks and has 4 RBI. Isn’t that always the way? Sheesh.

    Grey,
    I actually think Johnny Gomes, with a full season, could have a studly season in Cincinatti. You’ve said yourself that average can be fluky. His numbers since last season have been really good.

    With all that said, what side do you want: Gomes/Headley/Pierre for Stewart/Freese.

    Victorino

    I was watching the Twins game at the time, even the announcers were criticizing the ump for a couple innings before Craw got booted.

    In addition to the splits mentioned in the post, Berkman is a guy whose lefty-splits are way off this year. He’s always batted better as a lefty, but this year his OPS as a righty is .481 vs .830 as a lefty. I wonder if it has to do with more twisting on the left knee when batting righty or is unrelated. Small sample, but he’s also got an OPS of .956 in away games (only 32 ABs).

  101. Griffey24 says:
    (link)

    Well I have Util and I like to have a couple of guys on my bench just in case. I just think Weeks being in a better lineup has more potential this season then Beckham. What do u think?

  102. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Griffey24: Weeks has been absolutely atrocious, but sure give him a shot. not like Beckham’s killing it.

    EDIT: Word.

    Does anybody understand why Doumit was dropped to 7th? I saw via rotowire that John Russell said he did it in order to get his “hot bats” higher in the order…

    Is that in any way plausible? Last I checked Pearce and McCutch were the only guys on the team other than Doumit that were averaging over .265 or had an OPS over .750.

    I can only think he’s referring to Pearce and his one good game? I haven’t been watching any of these games, and have been happy with Doumit, who I own in both my leagues. Is there something I’m missing, because everyone seems to be down on him.

    Hmm… Adam Jones now with an 11-game hitting streak (9 of those are just 1-hit games, but still). Any chance he’s figuring things out… about to turn a corner? He’s in the FA pool right now, but probably only one “noticeable” game away from getting picked up. Ibanez and Gomes are my bottom two. Would you drop a quarter in Pacman over either of those guys?

    @BSA: Just joined the party as well, voted!!

    @Grey: In a league where I am dead last in steals, but in second place behind by 2 points. (Dead last in WHIP as well), would you trade Rollins for Reyes? (Reyes could be kept next year for a second round pick, Rollins can not be kept)

  116. GopherDay says:

    @Awesomus Maximus: I’d lose Gomes for him. He’s already turned a corner.

    @NukeLaDouche: Garcia, Kennedy, Cecil, romero, Medlen, Wilson… This isn’t a pitching staff, these are matchup guys. You’re missing a number one.

    @GopherDay: I’d want Reyes over Rollins.
