No one carries two catchers in one catcher leagues.  If you do, you probably suffer from mushy brain.  So in 12 team leagues, you have 10 to 15 catchers at any time to choose from.  Hey, Miguel Olivo’s dressed like Johnny Weir and he’s hitting!  What do you know, Rod Barajas looks less Barajas-y!  Skinny Pudge is seeing fat pitches! Most catchers are passed around like blow at a Eric Dane/Rebecca Gayheart clam bake.  That, there, is reason enough to punt catcher.  There’s always available options on waivers.

The top 3 options at catcher last year, who still have eligibility this year, are Mauer, Martinez and McCann.  (Wieters might have to flip his W over to keep with the theme.)  After those guys we have Suzuki, Posada, Montero, A.J. and Napoli.  Three waiver wire pick-ups (Suzuki, Montero and A.J.), one guy who went in the last rounds of drafts (Posada) and one guy who I had to beg with people all year to hold onto (Napoli).  It’s like this every year with catchers.  If you hopped out of a DeLorean to tell me Ramon Hernandez, Ryan Doumit, Chris Iannetta, Jeff Clement and Jesus Flores ended up in the top 10 catchers in 2010, I’d say, “I told you Iannetta was a good bargain,” and I’d ask if I used, “The Resurrection of Jesus Flores” as a post title.  Catchers are unpredictable and bunched together in value.  Open up those little oddly proportioned arms and embrace that fact.

Finally, the last reason why you should punt catcher.  Bengie Molina.  He’s available in every draft.  Always is.  No one drafts this Flying Molina Brother until around the 15th round.  His stats last year were 52/20/80/.265.  Victor Martinez’s stats were 88/23/108/.303/1; he gets drafted 23rd overall, according to Mock Draft Central.  The difference between the two was 36/3/28, some average and a steal.  Flying whoop.  With Adrian Gonzalez, who gets drafted right around V-Mart’s spot, vs. Jorge Cantu, a 1st baseman around Bengie’s spot, the difference is 24 homers.  A shortstop comparison would be Rollins vs. Yunel.  A pitcher comparison would be F-Her vs. Ryan Dempster.  At catcher, you can get away with not having a top one and it won’t hurt your team as much.  No pepper games allowed, but you can always punt catcher.

Any words other than punt for those of us in two-catcher leagues? Is it vital to make sure that you get at least one of the Soto/Napoli/Iannetta/Doumit quartet if you’re going to pass on Mauer/McCann/Vmart/Wieters?

The only league where I will be drafting a top catcher early is in my h2h money league. It’s a standard C,1B,2B,3B,SS,4OF,MI,CI,UT,2RP,5SP league.

In a roto format, you have the whole season to do the Ron Popeil strategy and make up for a month or so of suck. Last season in my h2h league, I can look to the mid point in my season when I traded for VMart as the point at which my team went from just squeaking by for wins or ties, to having healthy 3-4 category wins.

My wife appreciates the new dishwasher I bought her with my VMart winnings.

Thoughts on paying for a catcher in a h2h league vs a roto league?

In my AL only, must carry 2 catchers league the challenge is not punt but to get someone who won’t drag you down. Since its an auction keeper league now I have to decide if I keep VMart who I traded for late last season at $17.

  8. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@sean: Yup, it’s vital to get one of those, then punt the 2nd one.

@IowaCubs: Hmm… Don’t think it matters in either for a one catcher league. I think you found wealth with V-Mart but you would’ve if you took another valuable piece at a different position instead of V-Mart. If anything, I think punting catcher in H2H would be easier, because it’s really about matchups week to week.

  9. Grey

    Grey says:

@Cheese: I’ll probably mention them from time to time, but other than getting one top 5-7 catcher and punting the 2nd, I’m not sure what else needs to be said.

@gaucho: V-Mart’s fine in those circumstances.

  10. IowaCubs

    IowaCubs says:

@Grey: I get it. It would require a case study to explain, but basically in my case, VMart picked up the slack for slumping schmohawks Zobrist and Ibanez. If I had stuck with jerk number 7 at catcher, it would have been more difficult to count on my offense.

I just looked back at the trade, and here’s what I did:

Victor Martinez and Adam Wainwright for
Jermaine Dye, Chris Iannetta and Brandon Phillips.

So it makes sense that I improved.

***20-team dynasty H2H-points salary cap league***

Team salary is $70. I need to choose between a $2 Brett Myers and a $2 Ramon Hernandez.

Posey is my only other catcher, so I’m worried I’ll be without one if I drop Hernandez and Posey starts the year in AAA.

I could roll the dice and drop Hernandez and try to get him (or someone like him) in the draft for a $1. But it’s a deep league, so there are not many catchers out there.

That being said, I just think Myers is more worthy for his upside.

Or should I just drop them both and save the money?

  14. Grey

  15. Grey

  16. sean says:

@IowaCubs: I’ve always thought that building a H2H league team was more like drafting for fantasy football than baseball. You need to build the best starting lineup rather than compile stats. So, this trade is awesome for you because you traded a bench/marginal OF, a weaker catcher (Iannetta), and a solid 2B for a guy who finished 3rd for the NL CY and the second best catcher in the league.

  17. Frank Rizzo says:

Is McCann the only one that could be worth it? His ADP is around 50 so that’s 4th/5th round. And there’s a lot of stud pitchers at that point of the draft but C is much more scarce than SP. He usually comes off the board after the premium offensive talent is gone. If he hits 25-30 hr’s with 80 R’s and 90 RBI, isn’t that worth it?

Need some advice on a possible trade. Could trade away one more year of Ian Kinsler for three possible years of Ryan Howard. My other keepers are Kemp, Hanley, Jay Bruce and Gordon Beckham, who will be 2b eligible. I also have a good shot at Zimmerman in my redraft, which would solidify my IF. Most of the other top 1B are being kept. This is a good deal, right?

  19. Grey

    Grey says:

@Frank Rizzo: Would be hard for me to take McCann in a one catcher league around that spot because that’s usually when I’m looking at outfield or starter, but I could see it. I do like me some McCann and I have him ranked above Martinez.

    @TJ: I’d want Howard there.

    EDIT: Word.

    ***16-team H2H-Points Keeper League***

Each team has a $23 budget for keepers. Player’s cost increases every year.

My keepers are Lincecum (costs me $10 plus a 5th rounder), Braun ($9 & 6th) and Gordon Beckham ($4 & 13th). (No, not everyone has sick keepers like me) I also own Adam Lind (8th), but I can’t keep him.

I have the 14th overall pick in the draft. The team with the 3rd overall pick has offered me the following:

    Pick #3 and Pick #30
    FOR
    Pick #14, Pick #19 & Adam Lind

All of the major names…Pujols, A-Rod, Utley, Hanley, etc…are available in the draft, so I’m probably looking at A-Rod or Utley. But I see some really nice options like Rollins and Sizemore being available to me at #14/#19.

    What say you Grey? Anyone?

    Thanks.

Great site and content. I go back and forth on the position scarcity argument – I think there is more merit in it than people realize, especially for catchers who play everyday. Simply using your example of players demonstrates why position scarcity is important. Using last year’s stats and the metrics from baseballmonster (one can argue about its “value” accuracy separately), and you can see that the combo of Vmart and Cantu is actually better than the combo of Adrian Gonzalez and Molina (or even Suzuki). Which side would you rather have:
    A).296/39HR/155R/208RBI or
    B).271/60HR/142R/179RBI?
I say A, even though it is short 20HR, it wins the other categories by a substantial margin. Baseball Monster agrees – VMart had a value of .40 last year, Cantu (-.16) vs. AG’s .45 and Molina’s (-.68). With catchers, the lack of R and RBI (because they miss so many games) gets overlooked.

  22. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@gunhus: I hear what you’re saying… But Point Shares has V-Mart at 1.87, Rollins at 2.97 and A-Gon at 2.10. Rollins a full point plus over him is pretty big. A-Gon’s close. And Molina was one example, catchers can also be fluid in 12 team leagues. You want Doumit in June, he’s there. You want Iannetta in July, he’s there. Etc.

The keeper league that I am in has an “undroppable” rule where you can’t just drop a person. With this rule in mind, having a $50 cap with 2 C and Wieters being one for .90, should I also keep Kelly Shoppach for .01 and ride out the season with him? I think with Fielder, Arod, Kemp, and Pence, they should help alleviate the hit on ave. *I know you don’t draft with ave in mind*

With that same rationale, would you keep John Maine for .01? other pitchers kept are Broxton (.90), Nolasco(.99), Price(.90), and no longer keeping Jurrjens(.30)?

  24. Grey

    Grey says:

@Real Tom: Few things there. Dunn is not a .267 hitter. He’s a career .249 hitter. He’s also a 100 RBI, 80 Run, those are steep drop offs. Is Dunn horrible at first base? No, but he’s not in the same class. Finally, what if the person in front of you took Dunn, then who’s your first baseman? Butler? What if he gets taken? Then you have Garrett Jones? It’s playing with fire at a position you really need to be strong on.

@Nate Marcum: I’d keep Shoppach there. I’d keep Maine depending on when you have to make the decision and what his latest status is.

Seems as though ever mock I’ve done, every ranking I’ve looked at, and every blog I’ve read this year has Yadier and AJ pretty much back to back between 11-14. So if you were to punt C entirely, you’d end up with a catcher who’ll hit at least .280 for the year.

I can deal with that until a trade opportunity presents itself.

Can I deal with it all year? Hmm, dunno. That 40-50 run & rbi differential between those two and the top 5 or so would be tough to swallow.

Depends on how the draft plays out, I suppose.

  27. Nate Marcum says:

@Grey: The beautiful part about this situation is that we can only draft players on the opening day roster, so we don’t have to decide on our keepers until opening day, so I will have all of spring training to see if Maine’s arm is looking good.

Given that 2B has some interesting upside plays this year, and some like Coghlan might get availability at some point during the season, is McCann worth essentially a third-round pick over the spunky Sox sparkplug? I would say, “no,” but I feel either side kinda stinks.

I’ve started doing some mock dreezies on ESPN, and it just makes me realize how superior Razzballians are to the common fantasy man. This one guy in a draft took Crawford, Mauer, and Pedroia (the most over-rated player in fantasy history) with his first 3 picks…. All I can say is I wish I was in a money league with that guy and his friends haha.

@Asdrubal Bastardo: you said it right on…. i just did a yahoo mock (when am i not doing a mock?) and i took miggy, then wright and some other awesome alignment of awesome players drafting from the 12th spot. There were 9 of the 12 drafters present for AT LEAST the first 12 rounds… it was stupid the team i assembled. ONE GUY took scott sizmore in the mid 11th round, and about 4 picks later I took mini-donkey part Deux… i asked how he could take S. sizemore that early and said he’d be there 10 rounds later and he argued his upside, etc etc etc, and i said how could you NOT consider IAN STEWART, and he said because of his .200 some average, OF COURSE LOL…. god why do i argue for stewart and try to get them to buy in? I DO NOT KNOW.

    .293 in the minors
25/7 last year and not even a full time gig has me semi-sold.
The fact he’s 25 and the above…. SOLD SOLD SOLD. Taking Stewart in the 10th, 11th, and 12th ish rounds is golden. If he busts he busts, its not eff’ing chris davis in the 5th when you shoulda been taking votto or tulo last year ( i took both back to back in the 5th and 6th, wont claim all the credit it was basically by default bc alexie, davis, etc all went before i got my “turn”).

YA anyways, i’m not seeing alot of QUALITY drafters out there, if there’s as many MILLION fantasy baseball players as said, then some of them need to get better versed in their game, or if they’re playing for MONEY, they need to call me…. I will gratefully take their money and donate 20% to Daiquiri’s!!!!
