Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

These are the leading pitchers in the major leagues for last three July’s.  Do I think every pitcher does the same thing every year?  No, I don’t.  But pitchers do tend to follow patterns.  If these players were good in July for the last three years, there’s at least a chance they will be good this year.  I emphasized last year’s July over the previous years and omitted names that I thought wouldn’t be available anywhere.  Then I wrote the names on bingo balls, threw them in a large rotating cage and had a priest pick them out.  What?  That’s how I always do it.  Anyway, here’s some top fantasy baseball pitchers for the month of July:

Carlos Zambrano – Has an ERA of 1.93 for the last three July’s.  By far his best month.  Except for maybe December when the Big Z can be seen drinking Mai Tais on the white sand beaches of Bermuda.  Keep in mind Z gets so amped up in July that he loses his shizz in August, which is his worse ERA month over the last three years.

Wandy Rodriguez – Over the last three years his July ERA is 3.14, and last year it was 0.75 (2.60 FIP).  June has also proven to be a bad month for Wandy historically.  The only issue with hopping on the Wandwagon is I think he might be hiding an injury or having a mechanics problem because these last two months have been egregious.  Like off the charts tizzerrible.

Tommy Hunter – Only has one year to go on, last year, when he threw a 1.11 ERA in July.  He’s coming off a short start when he was pulled for precautionary reasons and says he should be good to go tonight.  I don’t like non-K pitchers or Ranger pitchers, so I wouldn’t touch him outside of AL-Only leagues.

Edwin Jackson – Last year, Edwin posted a 3.16 ERA in July.  Even in 2008 when he wasn’t particularly good he posted a respectable (for that season) 3.77 ERA.  His next start vs. the Rays isn’t pretty, but then he gets the Cards, Cubs and Marlins.

Matt Garza – Had a 3.12 ERA in July of 2008 and a 3.16 FIP last year.  How’s that for cherrypicking stats?  Hey, I own him so I’m trying to stay optimistic.

Scott Baker – His ERA last July wasn’t great at 4.45, but his FIP was 3.16 and his ERA in July of 2008 was 3.46.  He’s also been benefiting from Hubert H. Homerfree Retrodome.

    Good afternoon Grey!

Quick question, would you drop any of Lilly, Gio, or Nolasco for Jurrjens, Anibal Sanchez, Scherzer or Medlen in a standard 5 x 5 roto?

  2. Grey

    Grey says:

@Howie Met Your Mother: Could see losing Gio after his start vs. the Pirates for Scherzer if you need Ks or for Medlen.

I question the validity of using FIP for only a single month. That is a very small sample size to be relying on a sabermetric that has high short-term variance. Over the course of a season is a much more reliable way to use FIP, in my opinion.

@Grey: My OF (start 3) consists of Cruz, Robot, Boesch, Pacman. Ive tried 2 upgrade thru trades the last few weeks but not one trade has been made in my league yet. I dont wna miss the train on Colvin, so if he gets a secure spot in Louie’s OF, will he b better than Pacman?

  6. Grey

    Grey says:

    @aj: No, don’t start them.

@Jesse: I don’t think ERA’s that accurate either, so mileage may vary with this post, but I felt like it was worth noting.

@Buschfan51: Weird year it’s been for him though so far, because if he corrects his poor pitching from the 1st half then he should be better in the 2nd half, but he is always poor in the 2nd half.

    Hey Grey,

We have a bit of a controversy going on in my uber complicated mixed keeper league.

While it would take a year and a half to list out all of the rules, there are two owners who have made three questionable trades and I would like to get your opinion. If you feel you dont have enough info or dont want to wade into the middle of a shizzy situation, I understand.

If anyone else has some opinions please post as well.

One owner is in next to last and the other owner has won the league four years in a row but currently sits in fourth place. The owner who is next to last is not a newbie and seems to be more stringent in trades with other owners except this owner. And they are quite good friends outside of fantasy baseball. It has become a questionable problem. I will list the trades that have gone down and current status of the player on the fantasy teams roster. We do have minors/DL slots as well.

    Trade 1:

    Owner in 4th Place receives:
    Dustin Pedroia (Active)

Owner in next to last receives:
    Everth Cabrera (Dropped)
    Carlos Beltran (DL Slot)

    Trade 2:

    Owner in 4th Place receives:
    Alex Rodriguez (Active)

Owner in next to last receives:
    Adrien Gonzalez (Active)
Christian Friedrich (Minor Slot but then dropped)

    Trade 3:

    Owner in 4th place receives:
    Adam Dunn (Active)
    Hiroki Kuroda (Active)
    Jose Valverde (Active)

Owner in next to last receives:
    Aroldis Chapman (Minors)
    Jonny Gomes (Active)
    Jesus Montero (Minors)
    Cody Ross (Active)
    Ben Sheets (Active)
    Grady Sizemore (DL Slot)

    Thanks,

    Spartacus

  22. Clyde Prompto says:

  23. Jesse says:
    (link)

Does Colby Lewis keep this up or do I dump his ass?

and is Trevor Cahill’s sweet #s legit?

  24. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@Spartacus: All the trades are in favor of the 4th place team for this year (though the A-Rod one is pretty fair), but you can’t fault a guy at the bottom of the league for playing for next year. It’s the breaks when it comes to keeper leagues. Around now people start thinking about the future and make lopsided trades. Happens in my keeper leagues too.

@Clyde Prompto: Yeah, saw that. Hoffpauir…

@Jesse: I don’t like Cahill. Lewis look like a low 4 ERA pitcher with Ks.

  25. peter says:
    (link)

@Spartacus: Without knowing all of the ins/outs of your keeper rules, the 4th place owner is getting the better end of all of those deals. But I don’t know about a solution. I’ve played in leagues where this kind of thing has been an issue. Nothing was ever vetoed, but the “4th place” team was sometimes penalized an early draft pick, depending on egregiousness.

  28. Bodymore says:
    (link)

Still reeling from the loss of Kendry it seems, my lineup hasn’t seemed the same since. Dropped Smoak and he has been hitting, and Alvarez hasn’t. Do I want to reaquire Smoak for my CI? Grab Kouzmanoff to ride out his hot streak or could actually be my best option down the stretch?

  29. Grey: Are there any of these deals for Volquez you would *not* make at all? Do one or two stand out as particularly attractive? Here are the options:

    Kennedy
    Lowe
    Shields
    Burnett
    Edwin Jackson
    Wells
    Arroyo
    Bondo

  30. tHe ShiT says:
    (link)

    @Bodymore: Get Smoak asap!

  31. So, the Tulo owner has been asking for Alcides Escobar from me…he originally drafted Alcides and then dropped him when he wasn’t hitting or running. I grabbed him to fill in for Rollins.

    So far, he’s offered me:

    Vernon Wells for Alcides

Troy Glaus for Alcides and Adam LaRoche

I feel like I’m being overly stingy (V Wells for Alcides is good value), but I really don’t need another OF (got Ethier, Granderson, Victorino, Stubbs, and Tabata), and I don’t see that Glaus is much if any of an upgrade over LaRoche (especially since it’s got to be even odds or better that Glaus has a broken wrist by August).

Would you guys take either of those offers?

  32. Bodymore says:
    (link)

Smoak is gone…it made sense when I dropped him though. uch…. this season is lost…

  33. Mets fan says:
    (link)

Grey would you trade oswalt for garza and ortiz?

  34. Sorry, Grey, one more thing … I know you aren’t a fan of low-K pitchers, but in a 20 teamer where I’m short on innings would you stream Kyle bleepin Kendrick at home against Cleveland tomorrow? He did well against the Yankees last time out.

Or how about Brian Bannister against the Nats? That’s a 4 p.m. start and Bannister ERA is 5 runs lower in day games this year; last year it was almost 3 runs lower in day games (unbelievable but true).

The main thing for me is getting a win and not destroying ERA/WHIP. I’m in decent shape K-wise.

  35. peter says:
    (link)

@Bodymore: I endured 100 miserable Smoak ABs before cutting him. Now he’s respectable. And my stat sheet’s not.

  36. @Mark Geoffriau: These offers seem decent to me, but neither seems great. And it sounds like you have the other guy over a barrel.

How deep is your league? How about shopping Alcides around to the guy who lost Hardy or who may find out tonight he’s lost Aybar? Could you take Wells and then trade him or another OF to a team that needs depth there?

Thinking outside the box, what if you offered him Rollins for one of his real stud players who’ll make a huge difference on your season?

If none of that works out, and if you know there’s no team with a second SS at Alcides’ level, hold out for more … he needs you more than you need him.

  37. Bodymore says:
    (link)

@Peter Yeah seems to have happened to me with everyone this year (Latos, Rios). I guess the lesson is to hold onto Alvarez and hope he turns it around…but maybe make room for Kouz in the meantime.

The silly thing is I could have reacquired Smoak up until 15 min ago. I had the transaction open since Sunday…never pulled the trigger. I guess having a sub .200 AVG for the week dampens the motivation to make moves…

I either need a hug or sage fantasy advice that reignites my team…

  38. peter says:
    (link)

@Enrique: Bannister is up against Strasburg tomorrow. Kendrick is a better bet for the W.

  39. John C. says:
    (link)

Grey! no idea you were a yankees fan too. Do you read RLYW by any chance?

  40. @Enrique: Yeah, I thought about the Rollins idea…haven’t pitched it to him yet. He’s got a couple guys I’d really want, like Votto. Don’t think he’ll give me Votto for him, though.

  41. peter says:
    (link)

@Bodymore: If it’s any consolation, Smoak’s just had a couple good games; that’s not “game-changer” status

  42. Bring Back Pluto says:
    (link)

Probably old news to everyone here, but Rollins is in the line-up tonight!

  43. Bodymore says:
    (link)

@Peter Yeah I’ve been telling myself he could easily go back into slump mode… hopefully Alvarez and Stanton heat up and its a non issue…

  44. Okay, so now I have to clear room for Rollins…I’d assumed I would just drop Alcides, but now that he’s hitting a little and the Tulo owner wants him, I think I better hold on to him (plus, Rollins might go back on the DL in 2 days).

Smoak, Stubbs, Tabata, Headley, Heilman….gotta be Headley, right?

  45. Ruah says:
    (link)

Best DL’d keeper: Morales or Sizemore

  46. @Ruah: Morales, Sizemore may not be the same guy ever again.

  47. Derrick says:
    (link)

Who should I put on my DL slot between Volquez and Jurrjens? Who do you like better the rest of the way?

  48. @peter: Good point about Strasburg! I didn’t notice the opposing pitcher. Thanks.

  49. @Mark Geoffriau: You never know … if he’s used to Tulo-level production from SS he might do it. Maybe you suggest something else and mention Voto/Rollins as something you *might* consider. Who knows?

  50. @Enrique: Yeah, thinking of throwing Rollins/LaRoche for Votto out there.

Does anyone know where it’s possible to look up pitch counts for pitchers? Maybe some box score formats show that information?

I was thinking it could be helpful to stream a No. 2 RP if we knew the the closer was likely to sit because that scoreless 9th that looked so clean in the box score actually took him 40 pitches.

  57. Eddy says:
    (link)

    @Eric:
I know that there’s a site that states that, but I can’t remember it. I’ll get back to you on that. But to tide you over in the meantime, I know when you click the score next your player’s name (from the day before) in Yahoo, it’ll open up an article giving a recap of the game, then on the top left there’s a small link that says boxscore. Click that and in the bottom you’ll see pitchcounts from all pitchers.

  58. T-BZA says:
    (link)

    @Eric:
Yahoo box scores give you this data within the “Pitches-strikes” section at the bottom of the box score.

    Example:

    Pitches-strikes – U Jimenez 111-63; M Corpas 9-6; F Liriano 97-58; A Burnett 18-14; R Mahay 10-8.

Not sure if this is exactly what you’re looking for…

  59. T-BZA says:
    (link)

    @Eddy: got it

  60. Just wanted to put a name back on everyone’s radar…Jordan Zimmerman is throwing 20-30 pitches at a time in rehab sessions and is touching 94 on the gun. He’s expected to be back in the majors in August. If you’ve got an open DL spot, grab him next time you make an add/drop.

  61. Bring Back Pluto says:

    @Enrique: I wouldn’t do any of them.

@Mark Geoffriau: I’d take either deal. Glaus one first.

@Mets fan: If you needed a UTIL power bat.

    @Enrique: I wouldn’t touch either.

@John C.: Not really a Yankee fan anymore as much as a baseball fan. I don’t read that, not even sure what it is, to be honest.

    @Mark Geoffriau: Headley…

@Giggles McGehee: Young side, but it’s fair and not a trade I would make if I owned Wright.

  113. Grey

    @Grey: OK Statguy, I’ll retract.

I remember seeing a Q asking about Eric Young’s recovery- just found this:

Eric Young Jr. (broken leg) began playing catch, riding a stationary bike and hitting off a tee a little over a week ago.
Young fractured his right tibia in May and plans to take baby steps in his recovery in order to avoid further injury. “It feels good,” he said in mid-June. “But I have to wait to the break heals or I could risk being out for the season.” The utilityman was hitting .250 in 32 at-bats for the Rox. Jun. 22 – 11:15 am et

So it looks like he may be returning later rather than sooner.

thats prob what id try for first…would you do that? if the other guy doesnt take that would you do kemp for holli and baker (or equiv?)

thanks…i just look at it and there isnt TOO much difference in hollidays stats and kemps, right? or am i missing the big deal w/ kemp.

  132. Grey

    Grey says:

As of today, notable NL vote leaders for the ASG-

    At C- Yadier Molina
    At 3B- Crapolanco
And 2nd to Braun at OF- Heyward (he of the .205 June AVG (with a .306 June BABIP))

There are no AL vote leaders that are anywhere near as asinine. Ichiro is leading the OF votes, but I’m cool with that.

So… are NL fans less informed than AL fans? Or is it a product of the top players in the AL being on big market teams? I’m not sure. But there is a lot wrong with the NL voting, and I really wish that MLB would get rid of the whole home team advantage to the winning league thing.

  138. Howie Met Your Mother says:

@Howie Met Your Mother: Your question’s confusing, but are you asking for pitchers you’d trade Leake for? A #4 SP. Slowey’s in that group. Maybe a pitcher who just got rocked, like Verlander or Hanson, though it’s doubtful.

Amidst all the mourning over sonavabenches and horrid performances, I feel the urge to boast about my best day of the season so far in my 12 team H2H:

    13 runs, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 1 SB, 8 BB, .457 AVG

    18.2 IP, 1 W, 1 SV, 16 Ks, 1.93 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 2 QS

And Kershaw isn’t even done pitching.

  168. Steve says:

@Grey: One of us jinxed League…

  169. @Grey: Seriously. We Mets fans need to be proactive and go to the games with pretty women in angel outfits to support the Mets MVP.

On a side note – with the team doing well, watch them trade Mejia after stretching him out to start. It’ll be Scott Kazmir all over again, but worse since Meija’s got 4 pitches and isn’t made of glass.

@chrisbenson: FeLo was a nice boost in the second half for me last season after rostering the dreadful Jhonny Peralta (or however he misspells his name). Lopez scored a lot of runs and surprisingly drove in his fair share. Surprisingly though, he did not steal a base. I have the Death (to my ratios) Cab sitting on the DL and need speed, so I’m considering dumping FeLo, if I can’t make a trade a free up a roster space.

  170. Steve says:

    @Steve: Which duly turned into a reverse-jinx!

    Evening, Grey.

    1. League or Putz the best bet for future saves? both FAs.

    Thanks!

Wondering if anyone else did this or if I’m the only random–

Does anyone else have superstitions in what roster spots they play their players? For example, I have Werth, Holliday and Choo in that order of my OF slots (from top to bottom) and I refuse to move them out of that order to prevent any “bad mojo”. Same with SP, I can only have them pitch out of the top 3 SP slots.

So does anybody do this or did I just profess that I have taboos for fantasy baseball?

  173. Martin says:
    (link)

@grey- would you drop beckett in a 12 team mixed league if i have tulo and DLR on the DL? I would pick up clayton richard with the extra roster spot. I’m just concerned because beckett doesnt have a time table and he just got a new contract.

  174. @Eddy: I don’t do that, but I do tend to change my teams name when I’m doing badly.

Wow, I learn something every day. Silly me, I didn’t realize that the LaRoche brothers were the sons of former Yanks pitcher Dave LaRoche – he of the infamous LaLob. Man I haven’t seen an eephis pitch in years!

Hope I’m not imposing, but I wanted to share something that I thought was really cool. A filmmaker buddy of mine in my keeper league has just put out this great short documentary, called “The Bowler.” If you’re a degenerate gambler like me, you’ll love it. Even if you’re not, you’ll probably still love it. It’s about a bowling hustler in Staten Island, named Rocky. This needs to be a feature starring Steve Buscemi, even though he looks like John Turturro.

I wouldn’t share this if I didn’t think it kicked ass. Check it out, it’s 15 minutes long.

  180. @Steve: That there is big a superstition for me. I don’t talk my pitcher until his day is done. That and I try to sit in the same position if a guy is doing well – I guess I got that from Mex after the story of the Game 6 comeback in ’86 from “The Bad Guys Won.”

Speaking of ’86. I got a chance to see Wally at work over the weekend managing the Cyclones. Unfortunately he wasn’t given a reason to flip out. Maybe next time.
