One thing I like to do is throw the fifth or sixth best player out in a certain position early in the auction and then try to get him if that position is deep with good players. For example in an AL only auction I might throw out Konerko or Texeira and then try to get him cheap because everyone might be saving their money for Miggy, Pujols, or A. Gon. That is of course if these players are still in the pool. I find that i get good value this way so I can spend the big bucks on someone in a position that is scarce like Cano or Longoria. ITS ALL ABOUT POSITION SCARCITY!!!!!

to extrapolate a little more … I could have a MI of Tulo, Zorilla and someone like Altuve or Kelly J. OR I could have a MI of Tulo, Altuve, Utley (or Kipnis) and save 5 bucks or so for another position.

Hey Grey: Keeper quandries. 12 max keepers but will have no more than 11 no matter what I do. $300 budget. Do I keep Zorilla for $19, of drop him cuz I can get Kipnis or Ultley for around $15 or under? I like Zo’s OF/2b eligibility, but is he too much at $19? And I have Marcum at $13 … I can still afford Anibal and Beachy at their likely $15 prices, but if I drop Meatball I can probably pick up Leubke or Moore for around $15 instead. No top 20 pitchers are gonna be available. I have Hamels and Hanson as definite keepers.

Grey: 12 team 5×5 roto league, std set up with 5OF, CI, MI etc. If you could choose your draft slot (like I can!) except picks 1&5, where would you go?

I’m considering either 4 or 6. 4 gets me one of M-Cab,Pujols, Kemp or Votto; 6 adds Bats & Tulo to that list.

Not quite sure what either would get me Rd 2/3…

@Grey, Yeah it’s pretty elementary but it’s surprisingly easy to lose track when you’re involved in an especially long auction draft with large rosters – and drinking heavily.

Another thing that I’ve found effective: As I get towards the end, I like to leave $2 for each of my last few roster spots. This way I can gank the guy trying to get the player I like for $1.

Me: “$1 Fowler? oh contrar – $2!”
Other guy: “Damn, I’m broke! Screw you guy with tux and top hat.”
Me: Twists mustache and cackles like a madman

I haven’t yet found a FBB podcast that I could stand listening to. ESPN Baseball today (not Matthew Berry’s show) is decent, but I listen to that more for injury and bullpen comings and goings.

Good stuff with auction strategies. It’s all about nominating (and sometimes even bidding up) the guys you don’t want. Just don’t get stuck with them!

Another useful tip is to SPEND ALL YOUR MONEY. I learned that the hard way – that’s why the all-caps. I’m all about being the Monopoly Man at the draft but don’t go in for so many bargains that you end up with money to spend and no player slots left. Sounds dumb but it’s something to be aware of.

hey grey, i’m deciding between keeping a $20 mike stanton, a $16 cole hamels, and a $2 jordan zimmermann. jzimm and hamels seem to be the better values, but it looks like there are a plethora of solid pitchers and not too many people with a chance at 40+ hr. Also, we get to keep keepers for 3 years (this being the first), and jzimm and stanton will probably pay off more in the long run. Not to mention that i love stanton as much as you do – possibly to the point of irrationality – and would be kinda pissed if he hit 50 hr on someone else’s team…
