Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

I know how much you love draft strategy (do you?  Yeah, of course you do!).  Whether it’s snake draft or auction draft.  You gobble this shizz up.  Okay, I wasn’t speaking literally, take the corner of your computer monitor out of your mouth.  Auction drafts are the best.  They’re like that time you put in a twelve dollar bid on eBay for a VHS copy of Midnight Madness so your Michael J. Fox movie collection would be complete and you won it, then the Seller started emailing you that he too was a Michael J. Fox collector and he asked to friend you on Facebook and posted on your timeline, “MJ’s gonna be on The Good Wife tonight!!!” and then you had to unfriend him and change your email address.  So, lots of you know my fantasy baseball auction tips already, but some of you just joining us — hey, close the door behind you! — may not.  Lots of the strategy for my snake drafts also applies here.  If you ask me — and you kinda did ask me by reading this shizz — auction drafts are where it’s at, yo!  You get in a room with your best fantasy baseball buddies.  The guys you haven’t seen since last year’s draft.  The guys you don’t want to see until next year’s draft.  A few guys you actively despise.  One guy, and there’s always one, has to show you why the Droid is better than the iPhone.  Then you have the guy who will go the extra dollar for (fill-in favorite player from his favorite team).  You know that’s his favorite player because he’s wearing his jersey.  There’s also the guy who wears a jersey of a player he would never draft from a team he hates just to throw you off his scent, only he points this out to show you how clever he thinks he is, but obviously is not.  You have the guy who brings only Cheetos and turns everything he touches orange, and, if he touches something that was already orange, he makes it oranger.  Finally, you have the guy who made plans at 5PM and begins to yell at everyone at 4PM that they’re taking too long.  And, it always turns out, this day is the best day of the year.  Auction draft day is better than your wedding day.  As for online auction drafts, they’re just a’ight.  Anyway, here’s some tried and true tips to help you through your auction fantasy baseball draft:

1. Early in the draft, throw out guys that you know you have no interest in that will cost others a lot.

Say Trevor Bauer walked into your favorite karaoke club, then hogged the mic for three hours of remixes of Consummate 4sight and now you don’t want to draft him. So the first name you should nominate is Bauer for a $1 and let others overspend on him.  You don’t want high-priced pitching?  Nominate Verlander.  You think Buster Posey is overrated?  Nominate him.  You get the idea.  (BTW, my Jewish grandmother once released a single, Consomme 4 Sight, which was about how matzah ball soup helped her vision.  We’re currently looking into copyright infringements.  BTW II, it’s cool Trevor Bauer is rapping with Turtle from Entourage.  Okay, moving on…)

2. Go the extra dollar if you really want someone.

When you get to the end of the auction, no one has any flippin’ idea what they spent to get a guy.  If you want Matt Moore and every auction value article you’ve read says he’s worth $15 and the bidding’s just gone to $16, go to $17 if you want him.  It’s your team; you need certain guys whether they’re overpriced or not.

3. You want to be “rich” with auction money.

You won’t always have the most money at the draft, but, whenever possible, you want to.  The more money you have A) The better leverage you have attaining any guy you might want. B) You can get great buys late in the draft when no one else has any money.  Invariably, someone will throw out, say, Adam Eaton for a dollar (or some player that they think they can sneak through).  Then you get Eaton for $2 and everyone in the draft room groans, wishing they still had some money.  At your draft, you want to be like the little tuxedoed guy from Monopoly.  In fact, dress like him for your draft.

4. Decent catchers and closers are even easier to acquire in auctions.

In a snake draft, you never know when the Arencibia, Wieters, Putz, Nathan or whoever is going to be drafted.  The beauty of the auction is you can have anyone.  In my experience, you should wait until most of the teams have filled up their closers or catcher(s) slot then you nominate some one dollar beauts.

5. Keep track of who other people want.

The beauty of the auction is you know exactly what everyone else is thinking.  If Joe Schmohawk goes to $10 on Espinosa and you get him for $11, keep J.S. in mind when you’re looking to trade Espinosa after his hot April.  If someone groans when you get Matt Harvey, keep it in mind.  Unless it’s the same guy who’s been eating nothing but Cheetos for ten hours.  Then it might just be gas.

    Grey,

I have some very important auction questions …or I just want to ask you to review my draft strategy. I know how you love reviewing just drafted teams and how you looooove reviewing mock drafts, so I bestow on you one mock draft to critique ( I promise just one …well under this user name at least). Just want to see if my overall strategy is good and whether I’m getting good values for the rounds drafted. If any picks stick out as bad value, I would love to know.

This is a 10 team mixed no CI,MI, 3 OF, 2 UTL league. Let me preface this by saying I’ve been adamantly trying to expand the roster size with the commissioner. Even though this is a money league (100 dollar buy in), he seems opposed to the idea despite my best efforts to sway him.

    C Perez (12)
    1B Goldschmidt (4)
    2B Hill (7)
    3B Longoria (2)
    SS Rutledge (20)
    OF McCutchen (1)
    OF J. Upton (3)
    OF Jackson (10)
    UTL Butler (5)
    UTL Hosmer (13)
    BN Gardner (18)
    BN Frazier (21)
    BN Marte (24)

    SP Latos (6)
    SP Moore (8)
    SP Zimmerman (9)
    SP Samardzija (11)
    SP Harvey (14)
    SP Niese (16)
    SP Estrada (17)
    SP Hughes
    RP Holland
    RP Perkins
    RP Cishek

The only move I would change looking back would be taking Wainwright in the 5th over Butler, and filling that UTL spot later. Would you agree? There were only a few targets I missed in this draft. Notably, I would have preferred Scherzer over Latos, Choo over Jackson, and Wilhelmson over Perkins. I’m not big on Hosmer but he fell quite a bit.

Any thoughts and any advise for my bush league league (stutterer…) would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Grey sorry about asking you to critique a team, but I need a pert with a staches opinion and well you the best god damn fantasy pert with a stache I know.

It is a 14 team yahoo h2h 6×6 obp(not avg). Total bases and Holds are the extra cats. We play LF CF RF specific, 2 util. 1.C standard pitching. Keep in mind I used your top 400 rankings, this is my first dabble in anything larger then a 12 team league, and I missed the big run on C and 3B RP.

    Jaso
    Goldshmidt
    Zobrist
    Rutledge
    Machado
    Jennings
    AJak
    J.upton

    BN: Texiera,eaton,morse,gyorko,lowrie,brown.

    Medlen
    Shields
    Samadja
    Parker
    Miller
    Ryu
    Wihlesman
    Kenley Jensen
    Venters

Out of ten how good is this team?

FA catchers on interest are Flowers,Iannetta,AJ Ellis, Kurt Suzuki, and Wilson Ramos. Who would you take over Jaso? Jaso had a 398 obp in 300 AB’s last year. I know the other C from Oak town was higher in the rankings. It was late in the draft so I figured I could drop someone.

SP of note Romero,Wandy,Bauer,,Penny,Gee,Miguel Gonzalez, Dan Straily, Kyle Kendrick, Clayton Richards.

Be Brutally Honest. And would you drop Brown or Lowrie or Jaso for any of the perviously mentioned free agents?

    Thanks you again!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi Grey,

Long time fan, love the site. Any chance you can do a “perfect auction draft”? Similar to the one you did for snake drafts, using average auction prices? For my draft I usually prepare what I intend to spend on each position and adjust from there during the draft. It would be interesting to know what you folks believe the perfect draft would yield.

Had my first draft of the year this weekend, had to scratch the itch and joined one of the Y! Pro leagues. Only issue was the War Room 3000 was out of commission. Bummer, so I wung it and think I made out pretty well. Any idea when she’ll be back up so I can get a little post draft feedback? In the mean time, if anyone would like to critique, I’ll welcome any feedback 8th pick (draft round in ()):

    C – Wieters (12)
    1B – Ike Davis (9)
    2B – Kinsler (5)
    SS – Rutledge (14)
    3B – Lawrie (7)
    OF – McCutchen (1)
    OF – Justin Upton (2)
    OF – Adam Jones (3)
    UTIL – Todd Frazier (13)
    UTIL – Hosmer (10)
    BN – Kendrys Morales (20), Fowler (21)
    SP – Bumgarner (4), Wainwright (6), Moore (8), Ryu (17), Milone (19)
    RP – Street (11), Perkins (15), Cishek (16), Parnell (18), Veras (22)

Also drafted Luebke to stash and pick up another RP/streaming SP spot. Gee and a few other SPs are still out there, or I’ll just grab a RP and wait for a SP to come out of nowhere to snag.

I went into the draft planning to wait on C and 2B. But when Kinsler was still there in the 5th, I had to pounce (after a google search to make sure he hadn’t broken his leg earlier that day or something), same with Wieters in the 12th. Value was too good I felt. I like my Ike/Hosmer 1B platoon and wasn’t planning on another hitter, but when Morales was still hanging out in the 20th round I felt it was worth it, gives me some power insurance for cheap cheap. I wanted to go top heavy with SP and think I got a nice blend of Ks and ratios. I plan to stream my last SP spot. Also, just a note that I learned during the draft Frazier also has OF eligibility in Y! this year. Bonus.

  7. NatsFan says:

One item I would add is to have a budget sheet of what you want to spend on players. That way you know if you spend (for example $35 on JUp) how much you can spend on the next guy you like without busting a budget.

I’m in a pretty competitive/pretty decent entry fee ($700/team) 12 team NL only and work off a sheet that looks like this:

    Offense: $35, $25, $25, $21, $17, $14, $11, $10, $7, $5, $4, $2, $2, $1= $176
    Pitching: $22, $16, $14, $11, $8, $5, $5, $2, $2= $84

I tend to always have a decent amount of money during the auction compared to my comp (I didn’t buy Jup for $35, Bruce for $31 and Castro for $30, and think I am off to a great auction before I realize, shizz, I got no cash left!) and when the auction gets “soft” whether in the $17-$21 range or the $14-$17 range I can always be a buyer for that “slot”.

I think a “salary plan” is almost as important as a cheat sheet with your values.

    Hey Grey,

Once again, I love the site, and check in every day. Don’t stop!

I’m in a 10 team, 8 keeper league (draft is in 2 weeks) with the following hitting stats: R, RBI, HR, XBH, Avg, SB, Ks against, BBs, OPS.

My keepers are: Votto, Stanton, Trout, Upton, Tulowitzki, Verlander, Price, and Posey. I’m tempted to trade Posey for another keeper, as I’m not a believer in catchers being viable keepers over three years or more.

Who do you think I can and should target for a 1-for-1 deal? I was thinking maybe Adam Jones or Adrian Gonzalez, but I’m not sure if they are wise targets for building a team for years to come. Are there any other players that you would target? (Cano, Strasburg, Miggy, Braun, Kemp, etc. are out of the question)

    Thanks for all your help!

Hypothetical, 6th pick in a 12 tm 5×5. First round, the best value is Pujols, so you draft him, take an OF on the way back in area of Adam Jones. When the third round comes back, A-gonz and Goldy are still there. Do you take one because of the awesome value, even though it kills your flexibility more than a pulled groin? I keep running into situations like this making me think I should just draft Giancarlo around 6th or 7th overall because of the potential value of 1B’s still around in the 3rd.

Auction strategery question, since we’re on the topic.

How do you compensate for people having radically different values than you? Any way to exploit that?

The example I am thinking of is closers – my sheet tells me Kimbrel might be worth $18, inflation adjusted – I get him for $16, and am ecstatic – until an hour later when Axford, Motte, and Papelbon go for less than $5 apiece.

If you know going in that the league does not value closers, but your numbers say that each of the foregoing closers should be going for more than $10, how should you handle it? You certainly don’t want the three best closers for $40 when then next three best closers could be had for $13 total.

I’ve had similar things come up with HRs and SBs. I’ve had leagues where people believe they can pick up SBs late and overvalue HRs.

Aside from “you have to go with the room,” any ideas how to best exploit market discrepancies in an auction environment?

    * Jacoby Ellsbury

Hey Grey, more great advice… lovin’ what you’re bringing to my draft prep this year, thanks sir!

Quick question for you, or any other razz-ballers… is there a place I can get a printable list of yahoo’s rankings? (Specifically O-rank since I’m in a yahoo league and one of my leagues is a snake draft, ew, and alot of guys go off the yahoo o-rank)

I am just looking to find something I can cut and paste so I can have the yahoo rankings up in my war room…

        @Grey:

Personally, I would recommended printing out their adp listing. On the main draft page, its at the bottom. It’s not the O-rank but assuming thousands of drafts brings it to a mean, it gives you a good idea of where guys are being drafted.

Gack, I’ve already asked this question from a different angle in the past, but recent news has me asking again. Oh no, I don’t need anything, just wanted to spend some time with you! Now, here’s what I need to know.

H2h, 5×5, 12 team, pretty standard setup. I can keep one of the following along with my six other keepers who are locked in.

    David Wright- 1st round
    Bill Butler- 5th round
    David Ortiz- 13th round

I was going Ortiz, but I’m overreacting to his heel pain news, and need to make an Executive Decision by tomorrow. So, as a strong, decisive leader, I’m asking Mustache Guy on the Internet.
    Thanks!

Hey, I have a comment that’s actually sort of relevant to today’s post! Cashner looked good in his first ST appearance yesterday, but he probably won’t be able to start the season in the rotation. Hopefully that will result in a draft day discount (except in the RCL, where no one you like gets any discount, ever).

BTW, and also relevant, what the hell did Raekwon mean when he said he grew up on the “New York Times side”? Also, did they really roll in MPV’s? Was he taking his kids to soccer practice?

Ha… That was on topic (kidding!)… I think Rakwon meant that he grew up in Manhattan rather than Shaolin like the rest of the Wu… But Rap Genius tells me different: http://rapgenius.com/Wu-tang-clan-cream-lyrics#note-971 Be careful, if you’ve never seen that site before it’s addictive…

    Grey,

In a 12 team 5×5 (OBP)auction with mostly standard slots (29 man roster) and $265 budget main rule quirk is SP GS window of 135-175 with five RP slots (inflates value of top SP and at auction almost all opening day closers go for $10-15 at least with all viable setup men taken by the end of the draft) . We get to keep five guys at +$5 over last year’s price.

I know that I’ll be keeping Goldschmidt (keeper salary of $11), Wainwright ($11), and Perkins ($5).

I’ve got two more slots to fill after that. My options (in the order I’m currently ranking them) are Kimbrel ($15), Aoki ($5), Nathan ($14), Heyward ($19), Cuddyer ($5), Kipnis ($12),, and Willingham ($13).

I think I’m pretty solid on keeping Kimbrel at $15, he would likely go for $25+ at auction. But then I’m torn between taking what I think is the biggest profit but whom might fall through the cracks at auction for around the same price (Aoki at $5), locking in my top 3 closers at prices I can live with (Nathan at $14), or going with the guy with the most upside (Heyward, $19–almost certain to give me this level of production, but if he somehow puts it together could be worth $25+).

    Thanks

  35. Jacks says:
    (link)

Hey Grey, back for the new season! Our league was reduced thru misfortune to 10 teams, so I’m a little more clueless than usual about who I should keep. $300 budget, $2 minimum, 14 hitters, 9 pitchers, limited free agents .. and 4X4, no runs or Ks.

I’m on the fence about keeping Jose Reyes, who will be $42 this year. I’m already keeping Braun at $54. The best avail guys this year will be Miggy, Trout, Longo and Hanley. So i will punt a shot at them if I keep Reyes. I have no other MIs. Great MIs avail will be: Starlin, Kinsler, Pedroia. I’ll be punting a shot at them as well. In the draft I bet Reyes goes anywhere from $35-45. Keep? Also how about a $20 Putz? Thanks!

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Punt Reyes unless your next best option is Putz, because that’s worse…

      • Jacks says:
        (link)

        @Grey:

Oh, let me clarify, I don’t HAVE to drop either of them. I’m well under my keeper cap (12). Just questioning their value. Reyes at $42 is a little high. I’d love him at $30-35, so do the few extra bucks matter? He could have a top 10 year, I suspect he’ll love Toronto, but that’s a guess of course.

With Putz my concern is age and stability. He’ll probably go for $15-20

This sing really has had a big impact on my life…I realized that no matter how bad I suck at something that it always be O.K. because nothing could be worse than this song. I can’t screw anything up that bad in my life. I even listened to it stoned and…nope, still sucks.

Now for some baseball shizz…Being my first auction keeper draft ( I took over a team mid season) and knowing I will have good dollars to spend, do I try to block other teams pairing abilities? and if i have a lot of dollars, do I try to run the price up on someone I know they like?

just read Rudy’s article, more useful content, less jokes…in his “Stars ‘n Scrubs” approach, if i have a lot of money then I grab all the $1-3 dollar guys for just a buck or two more than my opponnents to beat them at the SnS approach?

@Grey: sounds like a good trade, I would of sent you five movies for that one….yes!

another movie question. I have been trying to figure out a movie that came out in the late 70′s/early 80′s where these rebellious kids live in the this new suburban wonder called New Granada. one kid is a mute and does lots of drugs, they show them on acid. Typical angry youth against the failed dream of suburbia thing. The hang at the rec center to hook up with chicks and score drugs. At the end they lock their parents in the school auditorium and light all their cars on fire.

It use to play on TV all the time when i was kid on the weekends during the day

Nice Luebke stash. 23rd round is pretty cheap considering Beachy went in the 21st and isn’t expected back as early as Cory is.

Yeah, I could see that; Tolberts beware. From some of the reading I did on Hillman, he did a lot of dancing and ‘waiting for the hole to open up’. You either learn or don’t learn on that front and with his size, he’s not gonna break many backfield tackles. Reggie Bush finally learned not to do that but it took a few seasons.

Ha, well yeah there’s that. Any fan of NFL/fantasy football just has to take with a grain of salt that some of the heroes would be vilified in the baseball world. AP’s dramatic recovery and playing game 1 of the 2012 season? Puh-leaze. But of course he put the off-season work in to be successful on top of it so there’s that. But really, anyone who saw that return timeline and doesn’t think something strange happened is fooling themselves.

                  • Jack Full of Hate says:
                    (link)

@Sky: for some reason i could care less if they roid up, I don’t care, just entertain me. Football has never been about records or players, just how great my team is, actual not fantasy, the fantasy games just makes watching it better. I’ve played football, it hurts a lot and you get banged up harder than any other thing you do. So in regards to the “PED’s”, I get it. I’m a big fan of personal responsibility, if they want to do that to themselves then so be it. baseball is different, records has always mattered long before ESPN was even a thought. Thats what kills me about the roids in baseball. It’s always been about the great individual achievements before any teams.

                      Sky says:
                      (link)

Yeah, I’m in the same boat as you. I guess the big thing in terms of PEDs is there is so much history behind drugs on the baseball field at this point. Cripes, Doc Ellis pitching a no hitter on LSD? It’s not a performance enhancer per se but you could easily say it puts you in a focused mindset. Do we put an asterisk on it? Meh. Overall, my stance on PEDs is my same on drugs in general: people are trying to make something illegal based on moral principles. Can’t get behind any concept like that. And define cheating? Kobe Bryant goes and gets his ‘blood spun’ in Germany by the same guy that did it for A-Rod. Why no questions about Kobe? He’s 34 and putting up his usual numbers while averaging almost 39 minutes a game. It’s just people trying to dictate their moral stamp on a subject that has nothing to do with morality. The moment you start paying people millions to perform, you’re telling them to do everything within their power to do so.

                  • Jack Full of Hate says:
                    (link)

@Sky: Kobe also trains like few before him and never takes a day off.

PED’s in baseball is tough, its not a morality thing for me but its a numbers thing. They have basically been doing speed forever so that doesn’t bother me. It’s the gaudy numbers of the steroid era, nothing more. Thats all the evidence for me to says its wrong. i was never one to cheat when I played, not my style. If these guys want to get all spun out then that is ok by me. You want to juice, then you can leave.

                      Sky says:
                      (link)

Sure with regards to Kobe but I think the same can be said for AP and how he’s come back. But it doesn’t negate the fact that there could be questions raised there just like in baseball but there’s not.

Overall, I can’t get behind calling roids cheating if we can’t call any other drug the same. Honestly, I think it shortened more careers than it lengthened and no matter how we look at it, Barry Bonds didn’t do all of what he did because of them. I mean, Jason Giambi was on the Mitchell Report but so was Jeremy Giambi. Remember him? Yeah, neither do I.

And because the conversation is fun, I’m gonna play Devil’s advocate and look at cheating from a different perspective: natural physical attributes that make you better/more advanced than others around you despite not necessarily being as good at said sport. Shaquille O’Neal was a physical force when he entered the NBA. Seven foot and 300 pounds and agile. Do you honestly believe he was a better basketball player than, say, David Robinson or Hakeem Olajuwon even in his prime? Or did his physical makeup simply make him unstoppable and along the way he learned how to play? What about Cam Newton? I know the verdict is still out but he’s a QB built like a linebacker. Basically what Michael Vick wishes he could be. Is it cheating to be more physically blessed than others around you and yet you still get to play on the same field and we all call it equal? I think in the end, you still have to be good for any of these things to matter and so that’s why I give steroids/PEDs a passing glance and don’t have it matter for me.

@Sky: Ones physical attributes are what they are. You’re playing that DA to the most hair splitting level. I know, by knee jerk reaction that if someone asks me who the home run champ is i say Hank Aaron, when someone asks who the single season champ is I say Roger Maris and Babe Ruth. I think Bonds was one of the best hitters I saw, but when you take his talent and mix that with the roids, which he admitted to indirectly using, cream and the clear, I just get left feeling empty. I don’t go wow, that guy is amazing, I say damn he really needs a therapist to work through whatever complex created that monster.

I know a lot of people that grew up with the Giambi’s. I grew up a city north of them and knew of them in high school. I know who Jeremy is. Also knew a chick that went to homecoming with Dan Haren. Also know a lot of people that knew Michael Young too. Hell i went to high school with Aaron Rowand. Since I’m being a jack ass now, i lived a couple doors down from a 1st round NBA’er and also knew another first rounder who grew up with my bro. I’m so cool I’m putting on my shades.

Don’t think it’s hair splitting if we’re talking about level playing field. Boxing has height and weight classes so that you play against/fight people of your own physical stature. Is Mike Tyson a better boxer than someone in the welterweight class because he could outsize him in the ring? I’m simply saying that for all the talk about steroids being cheating or an unfair advantage, the reality is the playing field is rarely level to begin with. However, all the roids or the natural attributes that you have that make you better than the next guy still doesn’t make you good at what you do. The work/dedication/effort still has to be there. Again, I’m not condoning PEDs I’m simply stating it’s an all or none for me if we’re going to talk about fairness of the game.

My lone claim to fame was a High School trip with friends to Portland and in the hotel we stayed at, I rode in an elevator with Kevin Willis. I was the only person on there who recognized him and I stared up at him for a little bit. When he looked down, I smiled and then turned my head back towards the elevator door.

10 Team Auction League with 4 Keepers. Third year with only one owner change. One owner suggests adding $25 to the entry to pay top team in each of the 5×5 categories $25. Some apprehension about owners making roster moves to win a category adversely affecting the outcome of the league. Any experience with this?

    Josh Hamilton - 7
    Max Scherzer – 8
    James Shields – 16

Just finished my 8 Team H2H draft, which is why my squad looks so ridiculous. Here are the stats:

H, R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG, OB+Slug, W, QS, SV, Ks, Ks/9, ERA, WHIP

    C – Perez
    1B – Fielder
    2B – Rutledge
    3B – Longoria
    SS – Tulo
    OF – J-Up
    OF – A.Jones
    OF – BJ
    UTIL – Jennings
    UTIL – Ike
    BN – Frazier
    BN – Ethier

    SP – Gio
    SP – Scherzer
    SP – Moore
    RP – Holland
    RP – Hanrahan
    P – Broxton
    P – Pestano
    P – Gallardo
    BN – Minor
    BN – Lester
    BN – Burnett

I’d take any feedback. Obviously the teams are stacked. It looks easy, but because there’s so much available, I think it’s actually a little harder than deeper leagues.

    Thanks.

@Wilsonian: You don’t have to apologize for having the best team anyone’s ever laid eyes on… Yeah, the team looks good, but like you said you have to play the waiver wire game non-stop… Which is why we’re here! Pestano went today in my my 15 team draft around the 2nd to last round so I he’s probably not worth holding there… Same with Burnett and Ethier…

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

@Grey: yeah, I win by stalking the waiver wire. Ethier, Burnett, and Pestano were taken just for shits. They were actually my last three picks and only taken because they were there. We have Ks/9 so I like Pestano for that, and I don’t think Perez makes it long in the closer’s role. But I’m definitely not married to any of them.

There are a few options I could move them for as-is, but I can hang on to them for now. Good options right now are:

Utley, LaRoche, Jesus, Pedro, Espinosa, Middlebrooks, Homer, Milone, Hellickson, McCarthy, Marmol, Frank Frank

        • Jack Full of Hate says:
          (link)

@Wilsonian: Espinosa for Burnett. Ethier always starts hot. might be worth a hold

          • Wilsonian says:
            (link)

@Jack Full of Hate: I was actually thinking the same thing. May actually lose Pestano for Espinosa. I was leaning Ethier, but you do have a point that he starts out hot.

            • Jack Full of Hate says:
              (link)

@Wilsonian: with k/9 i like Pestano, and if someone is fishing for saves he would be the first to go. Most likely you will be streaming guys like burnett, unless you have those whack ass limits on moves

@Jack Full of Hate: no limits, so we can make moves all day long. It’s part of the reason I’ve won this league three years in a row…the other is Razzball.

Grey, hadn’t seen your Top 400 before I had my first draft, but with some minor discrepancies…….12 team H2H

R, 3B, HR, RBI, SB, TB, AVG, OPS
    C-VMart
    1B-Butler
    2B-Pedroia
    3B-Miggy
    SS-Reyes
    OF-Choo
    OF-Aoki
    OF-Crawford
    Util-Dunn
    Util-Kendrys

With Soriano on the bench, as I need to drop a pitcher and add another batter.

    As concerns the pitchers:

W, CG, SHO, SV, K, HLD, ERA, WHIP, K/9, NH
    SP-Darvish
    SP-Kuroda
    SP-HellBoy
    RP-Soriano
    RP-Romo
    RP-Balfour
    P-Uehara
    P-Adams
    P-Fujikawa
P-Tazawa (I’m dropping him, just wandted to say that I drafted him)

    BN-W.Y. Chen
    BN-Iwakuma
    BN-Billingsley
    BN-Lohse (Jebus wept)

Lohse was supposed to be Beckett, but the young ‘un that I had present as a UN draft observer was allowed to make a pick and, well, Lohse is either immediately above or below Beckett there on the Yahoo list, and so the young ‘un made a boo-boo and picked Lohse instead of Beckett. 2 part question:
I play in a 6×6 (add OPS/Holds) 12 team auction league ($300 cap) with 6 keepers (we start 15 hitters/12 pitchers and have 3 man bench). My current keepers are Rutledge -5, Castro -17, Ike -7, Wainwright -5, Sale -5… because I sold my cheap potential keepers last year to acquire expiring contract stars to win the league, I’m hurting for keeper #6. My choices are J. Parker – 3, Melky – 13, Saunders – 4… Thoughts on which one I should keep?
Also, I basically punt Catchers and Saves (I focus on Holds as they are cheaper and often just as good as a closer)… I’m thinking of spending $230 on Hitters and only $70 on pitchers. With 2b being weak, should I go big on a guy like Cano (he’ll probably approach $50) or go cheap and spend huge on 1b/3b/OF?
