The White Sox signed Jose Abreu to the biggest deal in the history of Cuban baseball if you don’t count the time Fidel, J. Edgar Hoover and a CIA operative, who went by the name of Billy, played a game of stick ball for who would be the patsy in the Kennedy assassination.  Middle infielder Lee Harvey’s error let the game-winning run cross home and the rest is history.  Jim Bowden believes Jose Abreu can hit 30 homers and a .310 average.  This was after Abreu came out in favor of everyone driving Segways, so Bowden might’ve been partial.  Oh, who are we kidding?  Jim Bowden’s a gooftard who thought Elijah Dukes was the second coming of, well, Elijah.  Abreu is a wild card like, really, any Cuban player.  He could come in like a Puig and out like an El Duque.  Speaking of Puig, Abreu has been better than him and Cespedes in his Cuban baseball career.  Also, Abreu gets some rave reviews because he’s considered a ‘good kid.’  Yippee, let’s sing For He’s a Jolly Good Fella and let him bring in our mail when we’re out of town.  Doesn’t mean anything.  What means something is Abreu can be beat by 92+ MPH fastballs.  That means he’s going to have to hit a lot of number 3, 4 and 5 starters.  It’s doable, but he’s not going to hit .310 or 30 homers.  Since he’s a first baseman, I see him around the Mark Trumbo level.  Definitely worth owning in all leagues, but depending on where you have to draft him there might be more risk than he’s worth.  For 2014, I’ll give Jose Abreu the projections of 78/26/88/.268/2.  Anyway, in other Cuban signings for 2014 fantasy baseball:

Alexander Guerrero – And the Dodgers signed yet another Cuban raftee.  Those Dodgers there, they are filled to the rafters!  How Alexander Guerrero signed a deal to play in Hollywood and there wasn’t one newspaper with the title, “Showbiz and A.G.” I will never know.  You failed, Los Angeles Times.  Thankfully, Los Angeles isn’t in Miami or it would be a total free-for-all, humid and aquamarine-tinted.  Miami should just formally denounce normal colors.  “We, the people of Miami, would like to declare orange and aquamarine as our primary colors.”  When you get off the plane in Miami International, someone should be stationed at the gate and spray paint your face orange or aquamarine; your choice.  Ever notice how Miami is one of the last cities to ever have race issues?  It’s the pastel colors.  Put people in pastel colors and what are they looting?  Leotards?  Sherbet?  So, Scott Boras said Alexander Guerrero has the power of Dan Uggla.  Yeah, okay.  Take a high school C student and Boras can get him into Harvard Law School through the sheer force of his BS.  Guerrero will replace Ellis next year at 2nd base, assuming the Dodgers don’t still pay one-point-seven billion for Cano.  A.G. has some pop for a middle infielder, but probably won’t hit more than 15 long balls. That’s the sad trombone news.  Alexander takes after his brother from another mother with the same last name — Vladimir Guerrero.  He swings at anything within a yard sale of home plate.  Unlike Vlad the Impala, Alexander might not hit for a great average.  Hey, he’s got that in common with Uggla.  Excuse Boras for mixing up his comparisons!  He also has no speed and I wonder about his motivation.  He sat out last year because he didn’t want to play after not being chosen to play for Cuba’s World Baseball Classic team.  I can understand his disappointment.  He didn’t get to play in a meaningless tournament with 35% of the best players in the world.  Take a ‘lude with your ‘tude, ain’t got time for that.  For 2014, I see Guerrero giving the line of 63/12/68/.240/2.  It’s a’ight for NL-Only play, but he’ll be nothing but a wild card flyer at MI for most mixed leagues.

Off-topic question about keepers. I’m trying to figure out what I have before keeping track of what I’m going to want next year. 12 team H2H with 6 keeps, standard with CI & MI positions and extra cats of BB, TB, QS and L.

Keeping: Goldy, Carlos Gonzalez, Hanley, Kipnis

    Considering: Shelby Miller, Minor

    Other possibilities: Zimmerman, Pence, Cain

I really wanted to go with always keeping bats, but I’ve traded away my 2nd round pick so I only have 1 pick for the first 30ish players and streaming is hard with max 3 adds per week. Thanks, looking forward to your rankings.

Cano’s easily the biggest name… Could mean a huge pay day for him, but he needs the Yanks, Angels or Dodgers to do some crazy spending…

      • Gareth says:
        (link)

@Grey: Did you hear about Cano’s transparent Agent presentation to the Mets? You think the Yankee’s are buying that ploy for a second? Oh No! Sandy Alderson’s gonna break the bank!

The Angels are tapped out with Albatrosses and have Howie Kendrick, The Dodgers have Guerrero now, The Mets have multiple needs and don’t want to put all their eggs in one basket. ect ect.

Looking at the other 29 teams there really are no good fits out there based on budget constraints and the 2nd base position being available.

Being the biggest name with those huge wage demands limits Cano’s market somewhat.

        The Yankees know all this.

I think the Yankees will ultimately retain him, and I think his price will come down a decent amount from the 300 million plus that he’s asking for now.

        • Grey

          Grey says:

The Yanks are the only ones that can really pay for him, unless someone else bites and makes the worst deal of their franchise, like an A-Rod to Rangers type deal that they’re still paying for or Vernon Wells to the Blue Jays which the Angels are still paying for…

          • gareth says:
            (link)

@Grey: Totally agree. Theres that backloaded contract deal that teams agree to If they really like a player and are willing to accept the fact that they will eat money at the end of the contract.

Like you said, teams usually end up paying for this choice – sometimes even after the player is no longer on the ballclub. Larger franchises can also become limited in what they can do to improve the team (Angels – we can’t pay big dollars for a pitcher, so who’s up for a joe blanton redux, anyone?).

31 year old 2nd baseman Robinson Cano wants a 10 year 310 mllion contract.

  20. Gareth says:

After splurging on Bourn and Swisher last year and with the bloated inflation of Free Agency this offseason, I’d understand my team the Cleveland Indians largely sitting out of Free Agency. However I’m sure they’ll offer some Minor League deals or invest in some lower end guys. Maybe offer decent money to one veteran starter.

Here are the Lower end guys that personally intrigue me:

Scott Baker, Chris Capuano, Eric Chavez, Rajai Davis, Octavio Dotel, Mark Ellis, Gavin Floyd, Frank Francisco, Rafael Furcal, Franklin Guitierrez, Phil Hughes, Kelly Johnson, Mike Morse, Jeff Nieman, Darren Oliver, Roy Oswalt, Johan Santana, Kevin Youklis, Michael Young.

It does hurt to lose both Kazmir and Ubaldo though. Those guys turned things around at just the right time for themselves.

With all the kerfuffle about the “racist” Chief Wahoo caricature and Indians name, maybe it would be appropriate to rename the team “The Cleveland Lazaruses” or Cleveland Pheonixes.”

Looks like its more reclamation projects ahead. “Sigh.”

I have a keeper question re: my pitching staff-
    12 tm/ $260 auction keeper with +$4-yr contracts after 2nd yr/ h2h/ ESPN pts.

I have so far these ‘for sure’ keepers:
    Scherzer (year 2) @ $3, who I’ll be keeping 2 yrs @ $11
    JoFer @ $4

The rest is a struggle, leaning towards:
    Liriano @ $1

But then there are these guys making it complicated:
    Peavy @ $3
    Gausmann @ $1
    Kluber @ $4
    Lynn (year 2) @ $14

I’m looking to keep 3 pitchers total, but am weary of gambling on Liriano’s health.
Is Peavy or Kluber the better bet? Not sure Gausmann is going to be worth it next year re: IP’s. I also don’t feel Lynn is worth $18.

I don’t really get the Dodgers are big spenders in Free Agency. yes they paid for Greinke, and if not for that piece of s**t Quinten, would have looked pretty brillant. All the dollars tied up on their team come from internal players and those acquired via trade. If you look back at what they gave up for Hanley then you see that was a good deal for them. The Boston deal worked out for them with Gonzo, Punto and Crawford all being major pieces of one of the best teams this past year. Beckett was a bust, but oh well. I think what hurts them most is that they lost the Punto to the A’s. I have this feeling that Cano goes somewhere surprising like the Orioles or the Cubs.

His merch is everywhere and with eyes like that who could resist….he’s dreamy and he falls into the class of brotha’s ” I’m not really into black guys but i’d f**k him” territory. @J-FOH:
                .329 OBP/ 435 ABs -Crawford vs
                .360 OBP/ 482 ABs -Ethier

Ethier prolly the better leadoff hitter too…and he played the harder def. position and he made $6.5M less…

just think that a 32yo who relies on speed and makes $20M is going to be very difficult to move…

@Grey: I’m def. not a fan of Ethier just demonstrating how bad Crawford was/is…

Yup, thinking it’s more about the Dodgers needing a leadoff man more than yet another number #6 type hitter…

                    (link)

@Grey: my line of thinking, what it boils down to is numbers don’t always tell you about the worth of a man. If you can’t cut it when the pressure is on then it doesn’t matter if you hit .300, you’re still as worthless as tits on a bull

@J-FOH: it is sad that the headliner in that megadeal with boston has signed with the A’s.

  23. gareth says:
    (link)

The indians will most likely go after kevin youklis (francona / boston connection) to spell lonnie chisenhall at third and be a bench guy and occasional DH.

I see them also taking a flyer on one of baker, Floyd, nieman and hughes as they need pitching depth with the departure of 2 key starters.

They may have to add some bullpen free agents or trade for relievers as they will lose smith, albers, hill and perez.

it’ll be an intriguing offseason for them and other small market teams like the rays who have to use savvy and guile over big pockets to improve and return to the postseason.

HA… But who’s gonna platoon with every fifth outfielder the Rangers bring in?

    • gareth says:
      (link)

@SteveNZ: I’d rather have johnson at 1 year 8 million than murphy at 2 years and 10 million. Its a pipe dream anyway as johnson wanted to be in a pitchers park in the NL to rebuild his value.

I’m guessing drew stubbs will now be packaged in a trade for a pitcher as there has been mild interest in him and he fits as more of a center fielder than a right fielder on a ball club.

This deal makes me shudder a little as the last outfielder we acquired who had previously played for Texas was david delucci. I still have nightmares about his ill fated left field platoon with jason Michaels in ’07. Yuck.

LaTroy Hawkins signs with the Rockies..oooh the drama builds for who will be closing in Coors. I got some material for the coming bullpen report

If LaTroy is closing in Colorado then there’s gonna be a lot of openings for opposing teams…

      • J-FOH says:
        (link)

@Grey: He looked decent last year and we all know how teams feel about lefty closers. I think what they do is either start the year with him and see where it goes, probably no where, and then back to Brothers or it’s Brothers most the time and LaTroy comes in for some rouge saves in bad match ups.

          Grey says:

Yup… The issue with the Rockies is pitchers don’t want to go there, so they could look at Nathan, etc. but it doesn’t mean those closers would look to go there…

@Grey: One of those why the f**k did they expand baseball their. Same with the state of Florida.

Walt Weiss has shown us that he does things in a form of logic that only makes sense to him and this guy http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mo/teamamerica250b.jpg

Hey, just like a tabloid I have to cover all posibilities and one might be they use Hawkins. He can be the great Bullpen Zombino of 2014. If that occurs a new term could be on the horizon for teams that take old dudes that should be on the cusp of a midlife crisis and turn them into closers…again.

12 team h2h 6×6 dynasty league, keep 5 year from year. The round of pick each player costs is determined by the average of ADP (espn I think) and what round he was drafted in our league last year. Who should I keep? I’m thinking there’s 3 that are obvious since they are ranked in the top 5: Trout, Goldy and Cutch. These are my options for the two remaining spots:
    Dozier (no)
    Zimmermann (probably not)
Segura (thinking probably since he would cost me a very late pick)
    Alex Gordon (no)
Jayson Werth (maybe, had a great year)
Matt Moore (maybe, kept him the last two years)
Cashner ( I love him but think it might be crazy to keep him)
Ryu (better stats than Moore but not as exciting)
or wait a full year and keep Matt Harvey (tragic I know, I had an absolutely dominating team until he went down)
    I appreciate any input, Thanks.
Great writeup as always on the Cuban players.
