I’m looking at my 2014 fantasy baseball rankings compared to ESPN’s fantasy baseball rankings and my iTunes is hitting White Walls by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (featuring Schoolboy Q, Hollis and me).

I wanna be free, I wanna just live… Inside my rankings… This is my shizz…
Now throw it up (ESPN’s rankings make me wanna throw up),
That’s what it is (that’s what it is),
In my R-A-N-K-I-N-G-S, Mitch (Moreland),
Can’t see through their love for Kipnis (nah ah),
I’m drafting real slow (slow motion),
In my hot wet dripping love for Giancarlo, he’s 24 (handsome fella),
ESPN don’t got love for the 24’s (nah ah),
But they’re on those oft-injured Jacoby’s,
That’s in those New York short walls,
R-r-round them hundred year old folks (Jeter),
Old school like Old English in that brown paper bag,
Yovani’s rolling in with the same WHIP that my granddad had,
Hello, haters, damn y’all mad,
$30 on a starter, now how backpack rap is that?

I got that off-black Cadillac, with Puig on a midnight drive, got the gas pedal down, leaned back, he’s not taking his time…

I have Yasiel Puig at 19 overall, ESPN has him ranked down at 28 overall.  Those nine spots are huge that early in a draft.  I know what it is, they don’t want any part of Puig because they’re anti-communist like the Indonesians!  Wait, I think I’m anti-communist too…Maybe, I don’t know, I slept through that class.  Teacher, leave this kid alone!  I want Puig on every team.  I want to see him overrun 2nd base because he plays enthusiastically and doesn’t know how to slide or because in Cuban baseball you can overrun 2nd base!  I don’t care the reason; I just want him.  ESPN has Bryce Harper at 22 overall while I have him at 10.  Give me Harper if they don’t want him.  I want to watch Harper run through a wall like the Kool-Aid Man and scream, “Oh, yeah!”  I wanna see him cut his hair like a rooster and say, “Who’s the cock now?”  So predictable who ESPN is excited about… Hello, Jacoby Ellsbury, you’ve only been terrible twice in the last four years.  Who do you think has Starling Marte higher?  ESPN or me?  Do you even need to look to answer?  Then there’s players like Evan Longoria, who I have at 11 overall and ESPN has down at 25.  Well, he was injured again last year and he’s 31 years old.  Oh, wait a minute, that’s David Wright who was injured yet again and is 31.  Longoria is only 28 years old and had a solid year in 2013, so of course they have David Wright at 19 overall and Longoria at 25.  Of course they do!   Maybe when ESPN had their rankings summit, they ordered Chinese food in from Lucky Garden and Mr. Garden ranked all of their 3rd basemen.  Maybe they just throw darts at a rankings board and someone sneezed when they were ranking Longoria.  Your guess = my guess.  Let’s move on before my head explodes.

Getting Segura in the 7th round and it’s like I won the f**king lottery, homes (the f**king lottery, homes!)

They want Jason Kipnis in the 2nd round.  Don’t even ask where they ranked Jedd Gyorko.  “Excuse me, Mr. Berry, I’m the intern sent from Central Casting and I was wondering what you want me to do with Gyorko.”  “He goes with the rest of the jerkos at ESPN.  In front of the camera.”  Why consider the upside of a player when you can rank Ben Zobrist high?  I’m surprised they didn’t just put Pedroia in the top ten and call it a siesta.  They definitely knew what to do with Starlin Castro…Rank him in front of Jean Segura?!  Hold on a second, I need to lay down.  cnsihcsabs… Ugh, it’s too hard to type laying down.  Usually a player does poorly and they’re too far down on him the following year, or a player does well and they’re too high on him.  So, um, I really baffled by the Starlin Castro ranking.  In the shortstop rankings, January Grey was talking about how it was possible he could own Starlin Castro this year.  He talked about how he felt the general consensus on Castro was he couldn’t bounce back after his terrible 2013.  Well, the joke’s on you, January Grey!  Or is the joke on everyone else?  In this snow globe we call earth, there’s a place that looks like an old west town with a saloon.  Inside that saloon, we find ESPN writers doing Slippery Nipple shots and ranking Starlin Castro 71 overall!  Pujols’s ranking is no less baffling.  Sure, he wasn’t good last year, but ESPN usually loves the old and decrepit.  Is it really possible I’m that much more of a fan?  He did only hit 17 homers with 64 RBIs last year in 99 games.  Oh, wait, that means he was on pace for his usual numbers and last year he was limping around the bases while he was playing and now he’s healthy.

Knew Cobb would have a WHIP, but never one like this?

Of course, I’m higher on Alex Cobb than others, but didn’t think I’d be this far in front of the curve (that’s what she said!).  I can’t even see the curve from where I’m at.  I have him ranked 54th overall and ESPN has him 121st.  Julio Teheran is down at 128 at ESPN; I have him at 58.  Have Danny Salazar about sixty spots sooner, Sonny Gray about 80 spots sooner and Francisco Liriano about 120 spots sooner.  The list goes on and on… It’s all right, I’ll shine.  Future drafts never looked so bright.  Backwoods and dope, L.J. Hoes in the backseat with Phil Coke talking about whatever happened to Will Rhymes.

Now on the less-Macklemore tip, here’s a chart of the biggest values from ESPN to me (Thank you!) and the players that ESPN overrates (No thank you!):

    Keeper question…
Lose draft pick to keep player, 3 keepers, 12 team roto, late 1st round pickin this years draft.
Goldy(6th round) and Hanley(8th round) are obvious choices, but who has more value relative to draft pick,
Adam Jones(3rd round) or Shelby Miller(24th round).

Miller has deep value, but I’m guessing stacking Goldschmidt, Hanley, and Jones with another first round bat might be the way to go.
    Thoughts?

  8. TheNewLeaf says:

I do not get the Gyorko love at all. Yes he played at a 25-70 pace last year, but his plate skills are a big problem and I don’t see him bettering last years batting average (and he’s a serious threat to bottom out on average). His power will still be hurt by Petco (despite his success there last season), and his run production will be seriously hindered by his teammates. He’s essentially Dan Uggla, but with less run production potential in a less hitter friendly ballpark. I believe he’ll be one of those second year players that everyone expects to make the logical leap, and never does. I might get excited on a different team. He’s nice keeper player, but in a redraft league, I’m staying away this year:

    ~.245-25-70-65

    • Nate says:
      (link)

@TheNewLeaf: AT 2B the numbers you posted are worth where you draft him. I’ve never been one to draft for AVG – on top of that though, if Uggla really is the comparison, let’s not forget Uggla was a 2nd/3rd round pick at Gyorko’s age.

      • TheNewLeaf says:
        (link)

@Nate: yeah but Uggla didn’t play on one of the worst offenses in recent memory, in the worst stadium for homeruns, particularly right handers. And while I tend to think the batting average category is overrated, I do take note of guys that may hit under .250. Those projections are not 8th round worthy, even at 2nd base. He’s going before Phillips and hill…and I’d even prefer Prado and Utley at their ADPs:

        Phillips ~ .270-18-90-85-10
        Hill ~ .285-20-75-85-5
        Gyorko ~ .245-25-70-65-2

You’re paying an awful lot for those extra handful of homers.

        • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
          (link)

@TheNewLeaf: i’d much rather have Hill at where he’s going, MDC ADP around 125th.

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

@TheNewLeaf: From 2006 to 2010 in his ages 26 to 30 years, Uggla played at Sun Life Stadium which was not a hitter-friendly park. He had a .263 average over 776 games, and a per 162 game season average of 32 HRs, 97 RBI, and 105 runs. If you’re going to use Uggla as a comparative and want to factor in age/ability (Gyorko is 25 this year), you should look back on what he did a bit further. And Gyorko hit 23 in 125 games last year, meaning your 25 HR estimation is going to require him to take a step backward in what he’s already shown he can do. Also, his pace was not 25/70, it was 29.8/81.6. It’s fine if you’re down on a player but not much of your statement is really in line with what has happened and it’s not reflective of Uggla’s actual career in a similarly tough hitting environment.

      • TheNewLeaf says:
        (link)

@Sky: well I may have misspoke with the Uggla comparison. If he becomes Uggla in his prime, that would be plenty good. Uggla was just a quick off-the-top-of-my-head example of a guy with a contact issues and a propensity for low batting averages. I had the Uggla of the last three years in mind, hitting .220-.230.

Also I never extrapolate stats over 162. I think it’s unrealistic. I use 150. It’s a nice round number that allows for pretty much a a full season of at bats, with some games missed for various reasons. At 150 his homerun total is 27.6. I picked 25 because it was a round number (I tend to lump projected stats in increments of 5) and I don’t think he hits 30. Petco really dampens right handed power and I don’t think he hits 13 again at home.

Also, outside of power he regressed in every significant indicator as the season progressed, batting .217 from July on. It’s not an encouraging sign at all. I don’t like these all it nothing types because when it goes bad, it falls apart. I expect a slight regression, which given a full season of at bats leaves him at around his numbers from last year. And that doesn’t get me too excited.

        • Sky

          Sky says:
          (link)

Gotcha, RE: Uggla. Though we are talking about 8 years difference when having that conversation. Might be better to project with age/growth in mind.

I was simply extrapolating to reflect pace not for projection’s sake. I get what you’re saying about rounding but you’re down on the guy so you round down :) I round too. But I throw in the 2.5 here and there, especially when a guy has shown power through his career to date. He’s closer to a 30 HR guy than he is a 25 HR guy in my book.

He’s admittedly a flyball hitter. Those guys go through ebbs and flows throughout the course of a season. But of course, in roto they just have to do what they do in a reasonable amount of time. Pedro Alvarez hit 36 HRs last year and was bordering on unownable for a couple of months in the year. You take what you can get in these departments. But he also doesn’t strike out 30% of the time and actually puts the ball in play.

So no discount on his July in which he was coming back from a groin injury and he hit .100 which vastly skews his stats down the stretch? That’s pretty unforgiving. I’m not saying the kid’s gonna come out and hit .280 but I think you’re hanging your hat a bit too much on a small sample size. Kipnis has tanked 2 straight seasons after the all-star break. Would you take him where he’s going? How about Segura? I feel there’s too many examples of that you can bring to the table as your basis for argument. I’m pretty sure people thought Kipnis was figured out too in 2012 but he basically repeated the same pattern in 2013.

I guess in the end the small growth to .260 is possible but you seem inclined that all he is and will ever be is what he did for 125 games of his MLB career in his first season. He may never amass what he did in 352 MiLB games but I think he can get a little closer to it this year than just repeating his 2013 campaign. Either way, good chatting with ya. When does this damn season start, anyways?

          • Cram It says:
            (link)

@Sky: Seriously, I give a rookie a pass for hitting .100 in a month. And to microanalyze “trends” in one year is not fair. He hit .320 across the minors.

            • Sky

              Sky says:
              (link)

Yeah, he had an 8.3% BB rate and a 16.7% k rate in 2012 and he went to 6.3%/23.4% last year. I think he can trend both those numbers closer to his minor league track record. It’ll just take a little bump back to his track record to get him into the .260 range for hitting. Do think he’ll struggle for average if his FB rates stay the same, though. Moustakas needs to play in another stadium for his home games: 44.5% FB rate, 6.9% HR/FB ratio…yikes.

          • TheNewLeaf says:
            (link)

@Sky: when looking a bit deeper in his stats it looks a lot better when throwing out July, an injured month. I’ll give you that. I have looked into his numbers a bit more during this discussion and have come away a more encouraged. It is hard for me to get around him playing in San Diego however. If a polished major leaguer was headed to San Diego, I’d take pause and may avoid him altogether, depending on who he was and where he was going in drafts. So a guy with a small track record who didn’t exactly light the world on fire is tough for me to swallow playing in San Diego, esp with an 8th round price tag, which I feel is plenty valuable. I guess my feeling is that when I can take B.Phillips, a guy who will out produce him in 4 categories, is it wise to shoot for the upside of an extra 8-10 homers? However, I’ll give you that he did have a few .300+ months and if you throw out July and extrapolate the numbers…he looks pretty good.

            • Sky

              Sky says:
              (link)

B-Phun hit .261 last year. Pretty sure Gyorko can match that. Also pretty sure Phillips only stole 5 bags last year and has been declining in that department the last few years. Don’t think you win that category either or if the argument is 5 SB vs 1 or 2. He may get there on RBIs and Runs but I try not to be predisposed to saying ‘this team is going to be offensively bad because they play in Petco’ or whatever stadium. Headley had a 31/115/95 season. Maybe that was his career year but I wouldn’t discount a player just because of where he plays unless his skill set is too weak to get behind. Plus I think the Padres have an improving offensive club. They all just need to hit at the right/same time for it to show. Brandon was a bit of smoke and mirrors to me. Peel away the RBI/R production because of batting 4th between Votto/Bruce, you have .261/18/5. I think there’s too much dependence on other guys in his lineup to make him valuable. Those kind of guys I try to steer clear of, personally.

In the end, I do feel 8th round will be reasonable value on Gyorko. I don’t know if he’ll top it and I really don’t know if he’ll sniff 90+ in either runs or RBIs but I do think he’s good enough himself to produce. Just will depend if the other guys in the lineup join him.

I know you haven’t done the Yahoo comparison yet, but I still have a question…

Yahoo is more aggressive ranking Segura (#39) and I have been all over him in the fourth round if he is there, with Desmond as my fallback (ranked 4 spots back). However, there are some some other tasty offensive option right around that areas such as Bautistsa (30), Freeman (31), Upton (35), Choo (41), and Rios (44). Meanwhile, Andrus (90) is available much later and the offensive options at that point are a bit less appealing, such as Trumbo (80), Gordon (82), Hamilton (83), Donaldson (96).

So my question being, with the Yahoo ADP for Segura and Andrus, would you rather take the upside in Segura and settle for a lesser outfielder, or wait for the safe and boring Andrus a few rounds later and pick up a bigger bat early on?

    Thank you sir!

Awesome.. I made a list like is last year and was able to almost write out my draft before it started in my espn league.

One more I’ve found is that bourjos didn’t even make their top 300 and you have him at 133..

What would your strategery be for guys on the good list? Take a round before espn has em? Split the difference between yours and theirs? Or just go with the greynkings n f em? I’ve been grabbing segura in round 4 of 12 team mock pretty safely but wonder if I should let him go to 5 for instance.

    • c0wfunk says:

@c0wfunk: avisail Garcia also left out of the espn list.. I may have a few more I gotta dig up my notes :)

    • c0wfunk says:

@c0wfunk: Asche and Kole Calhoun also missed ESPN’s watchful eye. And they’ve got Hart at 216 versus your 106. Thanks again nice post!

@c0wfunk: Depends how badly you want them… A guy like Bourjos can wait five to seven rounds prolly… After pick 200 everything’s fair game for drafting…

  15. Sherm says:
    (link)

I like that ESPN has so many mocks and you do get the opportunity to draft when you want. Lots of auto-drafters after the first few rounds is lame, but if you go on a high-traffic day and hour you can luck into some good competition.

That said, in one of my first mocks I got Miggy, Longoria, Puig and Bautista in rounds 1-4. Don’t think that’s happening in real life.

    • Chris says:

      @Justin: @Sherm:

I got Miggy, Crush Davis, Tulo, Beltre, and Puig in the first 5 rounds of a $100 buy in, 10 team H2H league the other day. My boner took hours to subside

I’m shocked on the Moustakas difference considering it sounds like he single-handedly imploded some of your teams last season, Grey, but it’s a testament to your craft you aren’t holding grudges like 90% of other fantasy owners do for some reason on guys that have a bad season like that while they simultaneously drink the Kool-Aid on big years readily.

Question on your rankings for draft strategy: I was obviously going to follow your philosophy of waiting as long as possible on pitching but with a twist-I want to draft an “ace” to anchor my staff and then backfill with lots of the young guys you’re high on late in the draft. @B: unless the league’s he’s talking about are for money; here’s the rule, Play the best opponents in free leagues and love yr self the most when you win, play the worst ones in the biggest money leagues you can afford (feel so-so about yourself after winning these maybe) and spend the money you won easily either way.

In yahoo leagues you can have a staff of liriano, foster, gray, Masterson archer without taking a starter til round 12. Why not grab 2 top rp between rounds 6 and 10? It gets you close to 200k and 120 innings of low 2 era sub 1.00 whip. Plus you pretty much win saves.

Strategy question: in a 14 or 16 team league where you start only 3 OFer and 1 util, with few bench spots and limited waiver transactions, do you place more of an emphasis on getting better quality OFers? With the limited moves i gotta get a bench bat or two right?

    20-team, H2H-Keeper League w/$70 cap

My SPs (start 5) are Hamels $8, Cliff Lee $7, Latos $5, Jose Fernandez $2, Tyson Ross $2

Drop Hamels $8 and keep some combination of Aramis $5, Morneau $3, Veneble $3 and Rajai Davis $2 instead?

I don’t necessarily need the bats because my core offense is strong (Posey, Cano, Hanley, Pedro Alvarez, Bruce, Cespedes), but I’m concerned about Hamels’ shoulder possibly wasting $8.

Once again doing a great job Grey!!! Got a quick keeper question… 6 by 6 16 team OPS and QS get to keep five with no limits but only three outfielders. I’m pretty set on Miggy, McCutchen, Price and Shelby Miller but my fifth guy is up on the air. I’ve got Billy Hamilton, Michael Wacha and Matt Adams. It’s hard not to go with Wacha but as you’ve stated over and over pitching is about as deep as if gets. Which one of these guys would you pick and am I bat shit crazy to think about going Wacha over Miller?

    Great work as usual.

I have a question for those of you who play in leagues that limit transactions. My league is switching from no limits to some limits, and we’re arguing on how many weekly transactions should be allowed. Anyone who uses limits care to chime in on your opinion of them? No one knows what that arbitrary number should be.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Thanks! I hate waiver limits… I’ve heard anywhere from 1 to 7… Push for more…

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

@Grey: yeah, I don’t like them either, but some people in the league are pushing for it so I set it at 9. I averaged around 10 moves a week last season, so it won’t really change a whole lot about how I play.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

          Yeah, that’s not bad

          • Wilsonian says:
            (link)

@Grey: we’ve also added 5 roster spots per team (OF, IF, P, 2 BN) and an N/A slot, so that will take some people out of the F/A pool so there aren’t SO MANY All-Stars available on any given day. That would help streaming a little bit.

            • Grey

              Grey says:
              (link)

              Yup

              • goodfold2 says:
                (link)

@Grey: there’s a big difference from 5 to 7. So i’m guessing from 7-9 is similar to not as much so. i’ve lost out on very many up and comers due to running out with 5 hunting closers and/or streaming (PUIG! Sonny Gray the 2nd time he came up) last year in 16 teamer.

    • MattTruss223 says:
      (link)

@Wilsonian: I use ‘em in a few leagues (H2H only though). We use 4 for all of them. If it’s a roto league though, push for as many as possible. H2H leagues kinda make sense so people can’t stream like crazy against a particular opponent or something like that. Just dumb in roto though…

    • Fungazi says:
      (link)

@Wilsonian: We go with three per week in H2H. It avoids streaming, but still gives you a couple of 2-start pitchers if you want and makes you consider your transactions more carefully.

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

@MattTruss223: @Fungazi: yeah, it’s definitely H2H. It’s an insanely shallow league, so you could stream 2-3 pitchers every day. People complained about me and one other guy who pretty much equaled the rest of the league in moves. I set it at 9 since we’ve never done anything and this is a transitional time period. We can always change it next season, if need be. I’m ok with having to think a little more about moves, but if I pretty much just have to set it and forget it all week, it kind of defeats the purpose of fantasy to me.

        • goodfold2 says:
          (link)

@Wilsonian: my big league added losses as pitcher category to combat their streaming. they still only have 5 adds per week too, which is really shitty. Run out very easily with injuries/closer specs/ call ups/streaming.

    • Todd25 says:
      (link)

@Wilsonian: My H2H league runs with 5 per week. Was added a few years ago when one guy was streaming like 20 pitchers per week. 5 works for us, lets you make manager decisions, but prevents people from going ape-shizz crazy.

      • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
        (link)

trying to work a trade from one owner for either Leonys Martin ($8) or Adam Jones ($29). He also has Jonathan Villar ($2), but not sure if he’s willing to part with him.

I’m offering Perkins as you only need two solid closers to finish in top 3 in saves. Do you think Perkins for Martin is an even swap? Who should I offer with Perkins to get Jones? Should I press for Villar in one of these trades too?

He’s said he’s interested in Perkins, Holland, Gray, Griffin, Tillman, Arcia, and Ortiz… all my best value guys. I’d like to offer 2 for 1 or 3 for 2 or even 4 for 2, as I like the value of the two on the outside of my current 15.

I’m in a 10-team H2H 5×5 league, we keep 18 and keep forever (no $ amounts or anything). Pitching is at more of a premium because we all carry 10 SPs, if not more. Which combo do you prefer? Lawrie+one of Masterson/Cashner/Porcello OR two of Masterson/Cashner/Porcello+an extra pick. Lawrie right now is in my UTIL spot but I have an offer of a pick for Lawrie. Since I have some pitching I’m trying to decide between, it might not be the worst idea. Thoughts?

    Grey,
Great as always. For a cumulative points league with no bench, would you change your draft strategy at all from what you posted? League details:
    10 teams. 18 man roster, no bench… C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, 3OF, DH, 2Util, 5SPs, 2RPs

    Basic scoring summary:
Hitters: S-1, D-2, T-3, HR-4, RBI, SB and BB are all 1, KO is minus 1
Pitchers: IP-1.5, K-1, BBI and HRA is minus 1, ER and HA is minus .5, W-5, L- minus 3.

I know this might be a lot but any general insight is much appreciated!

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I’d go heavy on power guys and make sure there’s no position battles for any of them since you don’t have a bench… I’d go heavy on top flight pitchers… I’d take a top five SP type guy in your league…

  73. Cram It says:
    (link)

As much as I wasn’t buying into Puig not too long ago, I’ve since done a complete 180. He’s been going in the high $20’s/low $30’s in my mock auctions. I think that’s an excellent price point and I’m going to get me some stock in that. You’re right, I’d hate to miss out on what could be when guys like Rios/Choo/Stanton are going for the same.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Plus, he’s fun… Seriously, it’s nice to have a guy you can get excited about with upside… If he had a 35/20 season it wouldn’t shock me… If he has a 20/15 it wouldn’t either, but that’s not a complete bust…

      • Cram It says:
        (link)

@Grey: Truth. Having guys you’re excited about goes a long way. There’s nothing worse than looking at your team post-draft, and thinking “I don’t like ANY of these guys!”

        • Grey

          Grey says:

Yup… We all need something to believe in…

  74. malamoney

    malamoney says:
    (link)

Ok, so I completely understand (and agree) with the philosophy of drafting hitters over pitchers in the early rounds. However, in our H2H points league the scoring is a bit skewed towards pitching.

Our scoring system for pitching is:
    +10 points for a win
    -5 points for a loss
+1 point for every out, strikeout and pickoff
-1 for a walk, hit, earned run, hit batsment, balk and wild pitch
+10 for save (-5 for a blown save)

So in our league having some good starters is rather valuable.

I am keeping Braun, Tulo, Goldschmidt, Longoria and King Felix. Pretty much all of the top starters are keepers. I actually have two first round picks and 2 second round picks. What do you think about using my two first rounders for pitchers and my two second rounders for hitters?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I’m talking general when I say no early pitchers… I’d absolutely take top pitchers in your league… 2 in your first two picks makes sense…

  75. Kobayashi Maru says:
    (link)

Maybe you think you covered it adequately in your catcher ranks, but what the hell is their issue with Rosario? Their video in him is like,”oh he strikes out too much…” So what, he drops from .290 to .270 and still finishes as best catcher with 28/80. I’ll take the guy crushing homers behind Cargo and Tulo, who, by the way, will have the most at bats of any catcher except Posey if healthy.

I’ve got both in a keeper league and I’m rolling with Roasrio for $6 over Lucroy for $1.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Yeah, that’s why I ranked him number for catchers… I don’t get their dislike of him at all… He has 30+ homer power…

what kind of combination would you be aiming for at 2b/ss in an auction league? I know you’ve said you’re impressed with the depth at SS, but neither position really seems intriguing to me. I’ll probably resort to Miller at one of those positions…would you be confident filling the other spot (since Miller is 2b/ss elig) with another guy at or near his level, or do you feel like you need at least one of those positions to have an upper tier guy?

      • bozo says:
        (link)

        @Grey:

With speed seemingly not being an attribute of most of my targets, would you be okay ‘overpaying’ for a guy like Andrus ? Fills a MI hole with a quality guy, and also fills SBs. I’ve been slowly convincing myself to pay whatever his price is at my auction (within reason)

seems like it’s time to get worried about a league maybe when trades like this happen?
miggy 22 mil for this year and next
kluber .4 mil just this year
    for
zunino .4 for next 3 years
tim hudson 9 mil just this year
wong .4 mil for next 4 years
100 million budget league where the team that won this trade is a brand new member.

@Grey: me and 3 other guys are now throwing shit monkey style at our comish in message board, one owner def out, i’m trying to get connections from other owners for similar leagues, (where the loser of that trade and comish don’t comish). Comish is trying to explain it as Wong and Zunino top 2 prospects at their positions. I don’t see how getting Kluber makes any sense.

        • goodfold2 says:
          (link)

          • goodfold2 says:
            (link)

@Grey: there’s a lot of other bad trades in this league, but i simply can’t come up with even imagining somebody honestly believing that deal makes their own team better. in the other ones i could at least believe it. Comish (who is not one of the teams in this deal) claims due to Miggy’s age (30? that’s not too old) and cost, and zunino/wong being top prospects at their positions, but no explanation as to why kluber was also added to make Miggy’s side even better. Scary thing is that the winner is a “new” team, that i’m betting looks strangely familiar in the mirror to an already existing team in this league, likely the other trade partner.

    Grey,
Don’t ask, but, we auto drafted a 14 team league on yahoo and I had your rankings in and every one else had yahoo draft order. My team had pick 6:

    Jones
    Longo
    Pujols
    R Zimmerman
    Andrus
    Gordon
    Cobb
    Liriano
    Gyorko
    Fister
    Masterson
    Gray
    Moss
    Corbin

    Griffin
    Salty
    Hart
    Asche
    Bourjos
    Smyly
    M Perez
    Byrd

Yahoo 12-team 5×5. I have solid R, HR, RBI with okay SB and AVG. De Aza just hit waivers. Do I drop bench bat Hart or Bourjos or hold? (I know you hate bench bats but pitchers went ridiculously early this draft) Hart was complaining about his knees already and I haven’t heard anything about Bourjos being more than just part of a committee. I can platoon Aza with Rizzo at UTIL to boost my SBs. Thanks!

Pumped about what I got in 1-4. OK with Cespedes. I’m not excited about Zimmerman, but felt like that was nice value getting him at 70th. Staff looks good to me. starting with Sanchez in the 7th round, then Shields, Cobb, etc.

Waited quite a while in catcher. Got Gattis late, then waited a looooong time on 2B, and got Dozier, which I’m happy with. snagged Springer, Polanco, and Syndergaard at the end.

    what do you think?

    Round Pick Player
    1 3 Goldschmidt
    2 22 Gomez
    3 27 Segura
    4 46 Rios

@Grey: looks like the War Room likes this draft.

        R – 92%
        HR – 101%
        RBI – 96%
        SB – 99%
        Avg – 98%

        W – 83%
        K – 93%
        ERA – 100%
        WHIP – 102%
        SV – 61%

I think what was tricky a little was that the early guys got a ton if SBs, but I was able to get some power later from Granderson and Belt.

I’d be streaming, which would build up more Ws and Ks, and would have to speculate on closers, which was the plan. War Room is a great tool. Would be awesome if it allowed customization for different commonly used stats like OBP, k/9, etc.

        Thanks as always!

SP Cobb, Bailey, Zimm, Harvey (IR) (during the season I’ll carry 10 SPs)
    RP Jansen (5 RP spots)

I have 5 more keeper spots and a some more good options: Posey, Lawrie, Jennings, Victorino, Avi Garcia, Masterson, Porcello, Cashner

If I go by your rankings, it’d be Posey, Jennings, Victorino, Masterson and Porcello as the last 5. Follow those exactly, or make any changes? I’m inclined to lean youth/upside since it’s a keep forever league, so I’m wondering if Garcia could sneak in, or maybe Lawrie/Cashner. 10 teams (if you couldn’t tell already that it was shallow), H2H 5×5 scoring.

Howdy Grey! I have a keeper question. I need to pick my last keeper. It’s a 12 team h2h league that counts R, HR, RBI, Avg, Slg, BB’s and Net Steals and pitching is K, BB, ERA, WHIP, Quality Starts, Holds and Net Saves.

My lineup right now before setting my last keeper is:
    C:
    1b: Votto
    2b:
    3b: Zimmerman
    SS: Hanley
    OF: Jones
    OF: Marte
    OF: Jennings
    Util: Pujols
    BN: Grandy, Montero

    SP: Wainwright
    SP: Lee
    SP: Bumgarner
    RP:
    RP:
    RP:
    P: Garza
    P: Haren
    P

Options are Lucroy, D. Murphy, Kazmir, Robertson, and Rodney. I won the league last year so I get the last pick of every round, so I won’t pick till at least 24. I’m leaning Lucroy, Kazmir or Robertson. Who do you think would help my team the most given what i have?

just joined a money (small) league H2H 20 teamer 7X7 with QS and losses for pitchers. we also only have 2 RP spots per day with 5 SP slots. only 3 OF, thank god for a 20 teamer. any deviations from 12-16 teamer as far as drafting types of players? 5 pickups per week, so i’ll likely have to use more of them on streaming/closer prospecting. We do not have holds here. QS would seem to indicate drafting earlier pitchers, but that would go against the likely more important make sure you get a decent offense, since it’s so deep (only 22 man rosters though, so 450 players deep)

    Oscar T. question…

NL 4×4 Roto auction league. I bought Taveras last spring for $1 and can get him for $2 this season (next year for $4…3 yr. max on keepers…but I have to acquire him this season to get him on the cheap again next year).

Is he worth the $2 and the roster spot? In my league, if a player isn’t hurt you can’t replace so Oscar might not contribute for awhile. Does the potential value of him contributing stats for a portion of this season and, presumably, all of next justify this move?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I’d hold him for $2 if you have bench room…

      • Howie says:

Awesome article Grey. I took your rankings last year and juxtaposed them alongside ESPN’s and created a list similar to what you did above. I got some really good players later in the draft (i.e., Gomez, Pence, Samardziga, Romo and Perkins) at good value before my own skewed analysis got in the way (I think we both shared a mutual pain in Salvador Perez in 2013). Stay Classy.

      • Peter Nincompoop says:
        (link)

@Grey: I lied, in that, I can’t just give a well-deserved compliment and must ask for your analysis. I’m in a keeper league were you get to keep six year-to-year with the restriction that two players must be hitters and two must be pitchers. I had a championship roster and consolidated the excess for mid-to-late round picks and ended up with McCutcheon, Cano, Fielder, Puig, Scherzer and Price.

Is there anything left to do in your famous pseudonym’s opinion? I really like McCutcheon & Puig going forward. I kept Cano because he’s the best 2nd baseman even though his #’s will assuredly drop in Seattle (I’m in a NW-based league so there could be some “homerage” with regards to his market value). Then I got Fielder whom I can’t seem to get fair value for his inexplicable vegan rotundness (seriously, how much tempeh can one man eat?) Price and Scherzer fill out my pitching requirements, and are good, but I’m not really attached to either. I know you don’t know the league I’m in, so basically, is there a reason for concern in your opinion with how I have? Draft strategy’s early on (I pick 10th in a snake draft)?

Thank you for continually lending your expertise to owners of teams who you care nothing about. Stay Classy.

I’m a newbie when it comes down to drafting pitchers… I’m in a 12 team mixed league. SP and RP are combined into P slots (9 of them). What is better for my team? Should I focus on getting more RPs since they might come into play more regularly than your typical SPs? My league scores 5pts for Wins. Also 5pts for Saves. 3pts for Ks, 0 pts for IP. Negative pts for hits allowed and so on….

    1) Trade $12 Moore for $7 Beltran. I have no OFs going into the draft.
    2) Trade Moore for $2 Mccann and then ship off my $2 W Ramos for a $14 Nelson Cruz. I really like Ramos this year, but injury risk is there. Mccann could be great but league switch. And Cruz, now with the Os and DHing but who knows?

Grey, need help with my last keeper spot . We keep 5. H2H Custom points league.
Batters get negative points for K’s. Pitchers get points for innings pitched and negative points for ER and Walks.
So to put into perspective, the top 10 point scorers last year based on our points setup were – Trout, Miggy, kershaw, Goldy, Davis, mad max, waino, Cutch, Votto, Jones. Reason behind our scoring was to make pitchers just as valuable as hitters.

    I am already keeping Goldy in the 4th, Harper 13th, Segura 25th, Jo-fer 26th.
Here are my options for consideration for my 5th Keeper:
    Waino – 4th
    Scherzer – 5th
    Machado – 19th
    Pence- 8th
    Billy Hamilton- 26th

  130. Peter says:
    (link)

    Hey Grey,

Peter here again. Thought I was set on my keepers until I got a trade offer yesterday that I wanted to run past you. This is a 12-team, 5-man H2H keeper league.

I have no picks in the 1-3 rounds (my current keepers are: Goldy, Stanton, Puig, Wainwright and Scherzer). He’s offering:

Adam Jones, his Round 7 (Overall 84) Draft Pick and his Round 9 (Overall 108) Draft Pick for Giancarlo Stanton, my Round 5 (Overall 49) Draft Pick and my Round 8 (Overall 93)
    Draft Pick.

Thoughts? Is the upgrade from Stanton to Jones enough to give up these two picks as well as long-term because I will be keeping Jones instead of Stanton in the future? Just hate to see Stanton get traded soon and go off for like 55 HRs on a regular basis, plus he’s only 24.

Thanks, and again, sorry about your vomit mess ESPN created for you. Bastards.

@Grey: I was thinking utility and drafting an available 1b in the first round
