Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Stop me if you’ve heard this before but Colorado is playing at home and that’s a good thing for your DraftKings team.  Yes, duh to the derp degree.  We knows it now!  With that said, you’re always looking for a way to get in on that action on the cheap.  Tulo?  He’s too high at $5,400.  CarGo?  Car Go bye bye at $5,700.  And even Blackmon is nearing blackout territory at $4,600.  What’s a playa to do?  Well, you start looking at matchups and realize Madison Bumgarner is on the mound for today.  Let me indulge you with something you either already know or could look up: MadBum is an LHP.  Just in case you’re five and reading this – and you shouldn’t be, you have been advised – that doesn’t stand for Lego Harry Potter.  Nay, we’re talking left-handed pitchers and that’s one of the few types of pitchers Drew Stubbs has handled well for most of his career.  You see, little Stubby may have issues against righties but he’s handled the southpaw quite well for his career.  In 618 career at-bats, Drew has 24 HRs while hitting .273.  Now I’m no soothsayer but given that Michael Cuddyer is on the DL, I’d be surprised if the Rockies didn’t give Drew a day in right field and bat him in the two hole.  At first, I thought this was lunacy on my part but then asked the Hitter-Tron what he had to say and he ranked him 18th overall for outfielders on the day.  And then he asked me about my tail pipe and I left the room as fast as possible.  You nasty, ‘Tron!  Anywho, even though the Stream-O-Nator is ok with Madison in Coors, I think we all know the drill here.  Get in on the cheap and if he’s in the starting lineup, peeps, cuz that’s the Sweet Spot…oh, did I just drop a promo mid-sell on Stubbs?  Yes I did.  Check the link if you’d like to win around $100K.  You know, no biggie.  With that said, let’s move along.  Here are some other picks for today’s DraftKings contests for 2014 Fantasy Baseball…

Brandon Barnes, OF: $2,900 – Wanna know what I’m about?  I’m about-face!  This is me pointing out that maybe, just maybe, the Rockies roll with Barnes today.  I can only soothsay so much.

Carlos Gonzalez, OF: $5,700 – I’m simply putting this here on the off-chance you actually have $5,700 clams lying around on your DFS team.  But in that off-chance you do, CarGo has a .364/.432/.909 slashline against MadBum in 33 ABs with 5 HRs.  CarGo Vroom, my friends.

Anthony Rizzo, 1B: $4,200 – I’m tired of talking about Rockies players.  You know that I know that we know it’s an offensive hotbed.  Let us move on and take a peek somewhere else, shall we?  Rizzo has been fairly locked in of late, is at home and gets to face a guy with a 7.11 ERA in a hitter’s park.  You need another reason?  Fine, you can rap ‘R’ to the ‘izzo’ when he spanks one out.

Andrew McCutchen, OF: $4,700 – After a night in which Andrew went 3/3 with with 2 walks and a HR, why am I not fading him?  Because in 43 career ABs against Johnny Cueto he has 3 HRs and a .512 slugging percentage.  Sufficient reasoning?  Thought so.  Get in on that Pirate booty.

Nicholas Martinez, SP: $5,500 – Yeah, I’m not suggesting him.  I’m suggesting a Phat Stack yo!  Yeah, Phat is now in a real dictionary that doesn’t start with ‘Urban’ at the beginning.  I don’t know how I feel about this.  Let me ponder for a bit.  While I do, fill up on Athletics hitters.

Jose Fernandez, SP: $12,000 – Plenty of aces on the mound today but I like Jo-Fer’s set up the best.  Braves are still near the bottom shelf for team K rates.  Take a nice, long swig.

Tommy Milone, SP: $6,600 – I see you penny-pinching.  Let me help.  Milone has had a rocky year so far but in 176.2 career innings pitched in the O.Co, Milone has a 3.21 ERA.  There might be a sneaky 4 to 5 K start in here with a W over 6 to 7 innings.  Don’t start if you have heart troubles or if you have issues with Italian gangster movies.

Hyun-Jin Ryu, SP: $9,400 – I’m officially fading this matchup.  It seems right on paper.  But what I also see is that Philly has been fine against LHP so far this year and I don’t want to test the waters to prove it wrong.  Call me chicken if you want to.  Just put me on an organic free-range farm if you do, please.

I’m Only Happy When It Rains

BOSvsNYY is looking pretty dicey as of this typing with a extremely likely chance of a rainout.  If that’s not true, load up on Yanks as they’re straight raking against LHP so far this year.

NYMvsSTL has some similar East coast weather problems.  You’ll live without getting in here so move along.

PITvsCIN has no weather problems…unless you’re a pitcher.  Current wind projections out to RF are at 15 MPH.  Ike Davis?  Check.  Pedro AlvarezDiscount Dooooouble check.

Doing Lines In Vegas

COLvsSF at 9 1/2 for the day which just makes me shake my head.  10 1/2 yesterday but a run lower today?  Because MadBum is really gonna shut these guys down I guess?  Rhetorical?  Sarcasm?  I don’t even know anymore.  As I’ve already covered, you know what to do here.  Get in on the cheap on both sides of the home/away slate here.

BOSvsNYY is at 7 1/2 and I’m saying over here.  Like I mentioned earlier, Yanks have been all over lefty pitching so far.  Be wary, Jon Lester starters today.  You might get moLestered.

Yeah, that was cute but it didn’t make sense. You’ve already asked that question before and it was answered. And for what it’s worth, Stubbs is in the starting lineup tonight but is only batting 7th and Barnes is batting lead off so Barnes by sheer opportunity is now the better play anyway.

What’s up Sky?! I kinda LOVE Ian Kennedy today. The guys advanced metrics look great this season. His velocity is up too! $8,400 on DK. I paired him w J-Fer and stacked w TB going against Kyle Gibson today. I just can’t buy what Gibson is selling right now.

    • Sky

      @Nico: Hey Nico!

Gibson is tossing junk up there. TB stack makes a lot of sense.

I like Kennedy ROS but don’t like the matchup, personally. Flyball pitchers in that park can get rung up pretty fast.

      • Nico says:
        (link)

@Sky: Thanks, Sky! Kennedy’s GB% is up about 10% this year, though… close to 50%. I figured this would normalize, but with the velocity increase (1.5 mph) and what looks like a change to his pitching approach (looking at his Pitch/FX here), I’m wondering if it’s sustainable. I’m sure you’re more correct on today than I am, but I wonder if the changes could significantly impact his stats RoS (Like low 3′s ERA, w good whip and K’s!).

It could very well be, can’t argue it. I was with Jay on liking Ian Kennedy this year so you’re preaching to the choir. I think he can get back to being a 3.50 ERA or lower guy with solid WHIP and 8+ K/9 if he stays the course.

Not crazy to turn down. Singleton isn’t anything really special. Good average, maybe low 20s HR power but not game changing. But E5 for Votto isn’t crazy in and of itself. If you need help filling out your hitting squad, take the E5 side.

Another great article yesterday breaking down Jesse Chavez. I think he’s enjoying his first go-around against teams and is bound for a little regression as his “stuff” isn’t overwhelming, but will end up being one of the better “finds” of the season. On a side note, I bailed on Tyson Ross as well last Friday at home against San Francisco and now he’s been picked up by another team in my league and probably won’t be let go.

I have two questions for you (et al.), if you don’t mind providing me a little input on my 10-team H2H Keeper League…

First, I already have Duda playing 1B/3B for me (i.e., for Ryan Zimmerman) but are any of the following waiver wire guys a better option going forward: I. Davis, Morneau, Chisenhall or Castellanos? I can get them all for $1 or less off waivers, so auction money isn’t an issue.

Second, the bottom two on my pitching staff are currently Wily Peralta and Trevor Bauer. I like Peralta’s upside and his next start against CHC on Sunday, but he might be able to float through waivers one more time before the rest of the league catches on. I’m holding onto Bauer cause I think he get’s the permanent call within the next two weeks. Anyway, do you potentially drop either and put in a claim for Matt Garza (recently dropped) or Drew Smyly?

Keep on keeping on, and thanks.

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

@Gene Parmesan: Hehe, I think you’re confusing me with JB with your lead there. It’s all good.

I like Morneau/Davis/Chisenhall over Duda moving forward and in that order.

I like Smyly more than Peralta but I’d hold on Bauer as well. The potential for greatness is too good to pass up right now, especially with that Indians rotation in such flux.

      • Gene Parmesan says:
        (link)

@Sky: My bad on the “Pitcher Profile” mix-up. I really only follow your’s and JB’s stuff on this site, so just made the mistake. I agree on your 1B/3B assessment(s). I think Chisenhall could be a sneaky good pick-up given his pedigree (i.e., 1st Round pick in 2008 and now getting more regular AB’s), but probably not over Morneau or Ike Davis at this point. I agree with Bauer as well. Not sure what I’ll do with Peralta/Smyly, probably toss a coin. Thanks for the feedback.

          Sky says:

Not a worry at all, my friend. Just didn’t wanna ‘lie’ and roll with it.

Yeah, like Chis and the pedigree but Morneau has looked great and I think the Mets are in many ways one of the worst run orgs in baseball right now and don’t know how to use what they have. Pirates are on the opposite spectrum of that world.

          • Gene Parmesan says:
            (link)

@Sky: Final question(s) of the afternoon and then I’ll promise to stop prodding you: (1) Which side would you rather have…Scherzer and Billy Butler or Samardjiza, Cashner and Belt? (2) I’m big on team names as being a precursor to fantasy baseball success. Which is better? “Truffle Shuffles” or “Choo-Tang Clan”? I’ve done both movie/tv (i.e., Pawnee Rangers circa 2013) and music group (i.e., Ich-I-Ro Speedwagon) references before, but I’m stuck on this one. Much appreciated.

Ha, you’re fine Gene. I actually don’t mind the Belt side but only if you need pitching depth. I’ll go Choo-Tang Clan there.

I posted this earlier, but the message was deleted. I apologize if it is bad form to repost.

I am getting impatient with Miggy, worried about lingering injures, so I have a trade offer for him.

League overview:. 16 team keeper league ( I have Cabrera for 3 years).
5 X 4 League: Usual categories, no WHIP so pitching is devalued. Weekly lineup.

Am I being impatient with this trade? My team is slumping right now……

    Here is the offer:
I send M. Cabrera DET, Belt SF (walk year) & Salazar CLE (own for 2 years cheap), Walker Sea ( 2years)

I get McCutchen PIT (final year w/ matching rights), Headley SD(cheap, last year), Latos SD(final year), & Abreu CHW (own for 2 years cheap)

    Here is my line up:

    C: Gomes CLE
    1B: Belt SF
    2B: Utley PHI
    SS: H. Ramirez LAD
    3B: M. Cabrera Det
    UTL: Donaldson Oak
OF (3): Choo Tex, Bruce Cin, & Marte Pit
Bench: Simmons SS, Arcia CHW, Calhoun LAA, Hart Sea, Kenderick LAA, Baez CHC

SPers (start 4): Bumgarner SF, Gray Oak, Fister Was, Minor ATL, Masterson CLE, Kluber CLE, Estrada Mil, Porcello Det, Walker Sea

RPers (start 2): Romo SF & Reed Ari, Storen Was

Does this trade make sense for my team? Latos & Headley must be a part of this trade because they make the money work or else I would ask for a better player.

Sky, any input would be greatly appreciated!

@Hewhohesitates…is LOST.: Not an unreasonable trade but you’re on the sell low side of it. I’d prefer not to 1) make that move and 2) make such a big move. Typically the bigger it gets, the more lopsided it gets (that’s what she said).

        HA!

Agree on your overview. I am too “close” to the players on my side since I targeted all of them, so I wanted a more balanced view of the trade. What potentially evens out the trade is the $$$ piece, but I am more worried about talent & winning now.

I just pulled a trade off in a points league that is really focused around OPS the way its built

    I gave up-
    Aramis Ramirez
    Matt Kemp

    I get-
Carlos ‘Stares at Fly Balls’ Gomez
    Neil ‘Hometown Hero’ Walker

Now I feel I won this trade since my 2B is Brett Lawrie and Kolten Wong and with Mark Ellis back I felt uneasy with Wong and his reliability. Now I have an opportunity to acquire Daniel Murphy (NYM).

Do you think Daniel Murphy is better than Brett Lawrie in a situation like this? I know you have Murphy ranked 21 overall 2B (76/8/59/.282/12) and Lawrie 19th overall 3B (69/14/74/.268/12)..

Also do you still feel confident about Kolten Wong to be relevant going forward?

Haha, mas cerveza my friend! Murphy is gonna put you to sleep. I’d rather wait for a Lawrie hot-streak before I make that move. You already have one boring but effective 2B, I wouldn’t go after another one right now.

I’m not confident in Wong at all and personally wasn’t a fan heading into this season of him. Cards have a way of sucking the fun out of owning rookie hitters on their teams. They’re never in rebuild mode so those rooks have to have zero competition and get off to a great start to keep out of timeshares.
