Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Raise your hand if you got burned by Justin Masterson‘s last two starts. If you detect a touch of Old Spice deodorant and bitterness that’s because I’ve got both of my arms straight up in the air on this one. Bet you’re wondering how I can still type. That’s a trade secret Sky taught me. I haven’t been this mad at an Indian since I caught my neighbor Joe Charboneau peeing on my rose bushes. Don’t think I can’t see you Super Joe! As our fearless leader, George W. Bush used to say, “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me…you can’t get fooled again.”

That’s why this week I’m learning my lesson and going for the ace instead of trying to get cute with pitching values. Which leads me to this week’s pick, Max Scherzer, whose nice match-up against the Padres and all-around goodness make him a great start today. He’s perched atop the Stream-o-Nator at a $25 value, and while he’ll cost you $11,900 to roster, he’s worth every penny.

As always, the Hitter-Tron and the Stream-O-Nator are your best friends in this DraftKings venture. Their cold, emotionless robot minds are perfect for gambling. Signing up for DraftKings is easy…just click here. There’s also a great contest happening now called the Sweet Spot. Good luck and let’s look at some of the other picks for today…

Tony Cingrani, SP: $9,400 - Stream-o-Nator likes Cingrani at a $15 value, and he’s second only to Scherzer in strikeout value. He’s coming off a bit of a rough start against the Cardinals, but the Rays look to be a more favorable match-up for him in his home ballpark.

Brandon Moss, 1B/OF: $4,200 – Moss is today’s Hitter-Tron darling, valued at $40. Chris Young is on the mound for Seattle. ‘Tron must think Moss will teach the righty from Princeton a thing or two.

Alfonso Soriano, OF: $4,500 – Soriano is on a little hot streak right now with homers on back-to-back days. He’ll look to make it three straight against Felix Doubront. He’s smacked two dingers in just five at bats against the lefty.

Yadier Molina, C ($4,900) – Molina is 12-for-23 with three homers against Edwin Jackson, but keep an eye on the weather for this one, especially with Molina costing you nearly $5K.

Adam LaRoche, 1B: $4,200 – Nothing fancy here. LaRoche is hitting .400 over the past week, and he has hit four home runs in 33 at bats against the Harangatan.

Chris Carter, 1B/OF: $4,100 – Carter hasn’t hit a homer yet heading into Saturday night’s games, so I’m going out on a limb a bit with him. He is 6-for -11 with two homers against Martin Perez.

I’m Only Happy When It Rains

It’s really not looking good for the CLE/CWS game, with a chance of thunderstorms pretty much all day (70%). Elsewhere, there’s the possibility of some precipitation for both the CHC/STL and HOU/TEX matchups (~30%).

Doing Lines In Vegas

I like MIA@PHI (8 1/2) and HOU@TEX (9). Giancarlo Stanton and Chase Utley could produce 8 runs between them, and the Stream-o-Nator isn’t showing much love for Martin Perez or Brett Oberholtzer.

    Skaggs or Jesse Chavez? I have a hard time letting go of lefties who throw mid 90s.

    Mike: O NO!!! You have fallen into the maw of the dark side. I hope my precious, Jay Wrong, is not not mixed up in this.

    How long before a new RazzBall Tower is built offshore – for all the wrong reasons. A place where middle aged men with oily hair, open necked shirts with heavy gold tasteless necklaces on and carrying suitcase’s stuffed with cash frequent

    How long before, you may have to be talking baseball from Aruba or some other tiny island state for avoidance purposes – BE CAREFUL!!!!.

    Over his first three starts this year Masterson has lost 3 mph off his average fastball velocity from last year. 3 MPH is a huge, huge drop. Not good.

    • c0wfunk says:
      (link)

      @OaktownSteve: he wasn’t getting the ground balls at all last night and couldn’t hit the corner with his slider. Even the groundballs he did get guys were punching into holes. Looked really bad. Started to look like he was afraid to throw strikes then when he would have to guys would jump it. I hope he figures it out and its an early season/weather thing. Both pitchers yesterday seemed really uncomfortable.

        @c0wfunk:

        The wind was blowing like Oedipus yesterday. I’ll explain that one. Oedipus was the original motherf**ker. That can mess with a two seam guy.

        But the drop in velocity is definitely disconcerting.

      Yup. It’s not pretty. Never good when you hear the radio guys say “Masterson on the hill tomorrow, who is supposed to be our ace.”

        @Mike:

        Not good at all. And for the second outing in a row. One’s a coincidence…two’s a trend.

    Masterson was recently dropped and I just lost Cobb. Would you pick him up or grab Kluber? Or, is there someone else I should be looking at?

    • Mike

      Mike says:

      I’d rather have Kluber at this point, but watch the velocity these guys are talking about with Masterson. If he finds it, he’ll be solid too.

        @Mike:

        Kluber also has a slightly alarming velo drop. Come on Indians, get it together.

    The Indians pitching has been subpar so far. Couple that with cold bats, and Its amazing that they are at .500 right now.

    Also Aaron harang’s hot start is making the decision to go with carrasco as the 5th starter a poor one. I get that hes out of options, but this must be like his 10th chance to prove hes worthy of the rotation spot, and hes pitching like he belongs in the bullpen (or AAA).

    concerned about Aoki’s performance so far.

    stick it out or go grab someone who can give me more runs with more upside, like Kolten Wong et al.?

      Understandable, but I would stick it out with Aoki for sure.

      Yup. I was really surprised to see that Scherzer line when I got home. I’m going to create a league where you draft only hitters.
