Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

I’m a self-confessed/afflicted Mariners fan.  I have been since the days of The Kid, Bones and ‘The Martinez Brothers’.  I remember Mike Blowers catching fire in the second half of 1995 as Seattle surged to take over the AL West pennant from a team led by a guy with a fish for a last name.  Fast forward 19 years – make sure you don’t wear out your VCR doing that, it’ll take a while – and the Mariners are still chasing an Angels team that’s led by a guy with a fish for a last name, only now there is no Blowers, we traded for or signed at least 5 DHs in the off-season and get shut down by pitchers like Brett Oberholtzer, who sounds more like an item at IKEA than a major league ball player.  All this to say, as a man who plays over at DraftKings, I know what to do with the pain of having this kind of struggle from my home team – take advantage of it.  There’s a reason Brandon Maurer is only $5,500 over on the good ‘ole DK.  No, I’m not suggesting you play Maurer.  You think I’d start with this depressing open and then tell you to roll him out there?  His ERA is 6.99.  ERA not predictive enough for you?  How about an xFIP of 5.09?  Or a K/9 of 4.76?  Seriously, trade for Danny Worth at this stage, M’s, and let him run out there in Maurer’s stead please.  But until they do, consider any and all Angels in play.  Consider this your fall-back stack for the day which probably will be overplayed in GPP but should bring reasonable value.  No Mariners fan is safe tomorrow, that doesn’t mean you can’t reap the benefits.  And just in case you think I’m cray cray bae, HitterTron has got my back on this…and now it’s covered in oil discharge…if you’ll excuse me for a moment I’ll go clean up and finish off the rest of calling out these DK values.  Oh and if you’re wondering where J-FOH is today, he called in sick with his own oily discharge going on.  Feel free to Tweet at him random forms of sickness and hashtag it with #JFOHsIllness to make him feel better.  No really, he loves ridicule.  Promise!

R.A. Dickey, SP: $9,000 – The Royals are in an offensive funk and this old Dickey has been firing some pitch and catch spunk…prolly coulda gone with better wording there.  So how about this wording – the Royals just got swept by the Astros at home and scored only five total runs in that three game series.

Dan Haren, SP: $9,500 – Not a value play here at all but for good reason.  So far Haren’s home ERA is almost a run and a half lower than it is on the road (2.39 vs 3.72) and the Pirates have been pretty quiet as an offense on the whole this year but even moreso on the road with a .297 team wOBA.  Plunder that booty.

Josh Collmenter, SP: $6,500 – Clearly against the grain here – rich mahogany if you’re wondering – but given the opponent is the Reds, this could pay huge dividends in GPP tourneys.  Or you could get negative points and have to sell your wife’s wedding ring.  Again.  Not that I’m familiar with this situation…

Jaime Garcia, SP: $9,700 – You’ll notice I’m not going very cheap today.  Paying middle of the road pitching and up should garner you benefits.  Like the benefit of a guy who’s K’d 12 in 12.2 IP since returning from injury.  We might even throw in a dental plan.

Wade LeBlanc, SP: Price Unknown – I’m just throwing him on here in case the benevolent DK Gods change their mind and make him available.  Joey’s less intelligent, uglier brother is a bad pitcher.  But he’s a lefty and the Mariners couldn’t hit one of those even if it were soft ball.

Dexter Fowler, OF: $4,000 – Want a sneaky stack play for the day?  You may want a piece of Dat Astros.  They’re middle of the road at home for team offenses and Ubaldo Jimenez could walk in 5 runs in the first inning.  I’m only half-joking on that.  Dexter leads the offensive charge with his .410 home wOBA but there are plenty of value plays because, well, Astros.  Derp.  Consider filling roster spots that aren’t Angels with some Houston Hombres.

Mitch Moreland, 1B/OF: $3,600 – Can we be Frank?  But you’re talking about Mitch and I’d prefer to be called Ernest.  Uh, ok I guess.  What I meant to say is I’m not a huge Moreland fan.  But what I am a fan of is a guy who’s been batting in the 3 spot of the Rangers lineup for most of the week and is this cheap.  Easy 1B to build around without having to spend much up front to do it.

Adam Lind, 1B: $4,000 – Not quite as cheap as Mitch but he has a great history against James Shields with 5 HRs in 51 career ABs against him.  Yes, I’m usually with you in ignoring BvsP stats but when the bombs are involved blood rushes to my nether regions and I find myself unable to sit comfortably.  Speaking of BvsP, Jose Bautista has 4 HRs in 28 career AB against Big Game James.  But like you said, you don’t care so just ignore this part…while I reap the benefits

I’m Only Happy When It Rains

Only game that looks dangerous at the moment is STLvsSF as there’s scattered thunder storms for most of the day.  If you’re rolling with Garcia, make sure and keep your eye out here.  You may have to remove your Jaime.

Someone just dropped Crawford. Should I pick him up or pick up Joc Pederson?

    • Sky

      Sky says:

Depends on league size. I’d pick up Joc for the upside factor for now.

NL-only 5×5 roto — would you trade my Juan Uribe and Bastardo for his Mark Reynolds? The DL thing worries me on Uribe, or is this just lateral at best? Do you have Reynolds projected as useful in a deep league?

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

Reynolds is still the same up and down player he was the last 4 years. Uribe may not be as flashy but I’d prefer his season end line over Reynolds in a deeper league.

How do you feel about Vogelsong? He’s been terrific last few starts.

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

Depends on what the topic is. We talking DraftKings today? I wouldn’t play him there. Cards offense hasn’t been grand but they don’t K much and Vogelsong has had a nice run in terms of opponent/matchups. Don’t think today is the day to roll him out there. But if we’re talking for a full season, I like him as a stream in RCL leagues and as a hold in deeper leagues.

Hey Sky, I’m looking for buy low candidates. Any idea whats up with Gerrit Cole?

I’m offering EverCab and Eovaldi. Would you do that trade?

My staff is: Teheran, Gray, Cobb, Keuchel, Eovaldi, Heaney (N/A)
And my SS/MI are: Andrus, EverCab, Alcides, Baez (N/A)

    • Sky

Hey Thumb! Here’s what I’m seeing on Cole

Little lucky in LOB% at 79% but also a tad unlucky on HR/FB rate at 15.7%; I think he’ll normalize a bit down to about a 3.50 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. He’ll regress to what he should be over time but what he is is not the top 20 starter some were predicting. But a top 30 is definitely possible. GB rates are healthy and the K rate is good. I’ll buy if someone is ready to move on from him.

I think you might be overpaying a tad. Alcides I’d move sooner simply due to lineup situation. Reasonable trade for ROS, IMHO.

  6. Thoughts on playing Shoemaker tonight against the Mariners as a value pick?

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

@WNWDOTCOM: Definitely a risky go. Mariners aren’t a good hitting team admittedly but don’t think the value will be there with Shoemaker. In GPP, any pitcher is a go but I’d avoid in cash games and in regular fantasy.

I am in the need for speed in my 16 team league.

My Of is Bruce Cin, Marte Pit, Choo Tex, Arcia Min, Calhoun LAA, Dickerson COl, & Hunter Det

Am I selling low on a Marte Pit for Gordan LAD trade? Or buying high on Gordon?
Of note this is a keeper league & I can keep Gordon next year, Marte is a FA.

I would place Gordon in my UTL slot. Gordon would also provide a good back up to Hanley LAD/Simmons ATL SS & Utley PHI/Kenderick LAA 2B.

    Thanks Sky!

    • Sky

@Hewhohesitates…is LOST.: If you’re looking for speed, selling Marte doesn’t help you. I’m fine with the move but if it’s about speed, it could be fairly lateral. Like it besides that part, though.

SKY!!! Long time no harass. Quick Question here… WTF is going on with the emoticon (Smyly), he starts, he comes of the bench, blah blah blah, is this dude worthy of a roster spot in a 10-team 5×5 Yahoo! roto league with a 25 man roster. Best pitchers not rostered include E. Santana, R.A. Dickey (whom I swear I will never own again, hear that Jay!), Wily Peralta, Garza, Masterson, Wheeler to name a few. I have been streaming the emoticon with success as my pitching is pretty damn good (Scherzer, Yu, Teheran, Porchello). Thoughts… Also, I have Vogelsong right now (streamed him in his last start, and benching tonight against STL), is he worth keeping or should I just stream him (recognizing the options I presented previously).

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

@Count de Monetball: Count! Glad to have you stumping around here again. Smyly had his name changed to frowny face. I just dropped him in a 10 team for Colin McHugh. He’s let-goable in my book; use the spot to stream and don’t waste a night’s sleep over it. Vogelsong is very much about matchup to me. He’s gonna get shelled in STL tonight, I think. Has had a great run of matchups. Good not great. You could probably cut down to Scherzer/Yu/Teheran and be just fine and stream the rest with that setup.

You didn’t just put the jinx on Haren, did you? I’ve got him going in the FCL tonight. Dammit, Sky (apologies if he throws a gem).

Drinking Sam Adams Boston Ale tonight. Pretty good stuff, but not great. What’ve you been throwing back in the great Northwest?

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

@Big Magoo: Haha, I hope not! Have him in most my DFS for tonight.

Right now, just going with a Deschutes IPA cuz it was on sale. Recently had a Saison that was smoked cherry, though, at a local Growler shop. The smokey flavor really takes over the cherry flavor. Normally not a Saison guy but that one was awesome.

      • Big Magoo says:
        (link)

@Sky: I’ve been on an IPA kick lately. Sierra Nevada Torpedoes (always great), Otter Creek White (decent), Smuttynose Finestkind (solid), and a few others.

On sale is always good. Doesn’t razzball fill your coffers? You should be able to afford a few bottles of this: http://www.indyposted.com/34470/brewdogs-the-end-of-history-beer/

@Sky: @Big Magoo: jeez, I cut myself off there. Was gonna say there’s just a huge amount of local or at least PNW local on sale at any given moment so I find myself having a BridgePort Hop Czar IPA as my go to more often than not. Really crisp IPA, good stuff.

Wutup Sky how u been..? should I stream Ruby De La Rosa or Tomlin vs Chacin ( SON likes it)?? The thing is if De La Rosa pitches well then there’s a chance he can be a keeper anD I sure need that. I guess same goes for Tomlin.. Maybe

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

@Frank White: Hey Frank! If I have to choose, I’d choose Tomlin but I’d prefer not to roll either out there if that were an option. Rubby has keeper potential but he needs to get his walk rate down before he’s all that enticing.

  14. Frank White says:

Is it time to cut ties with Cingrani or wait to see what happens??

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

@Frank White: Depends who you’re cutting Cingrani for. If it’s Tomlin or Rubby and you’re hoping to hold onto one or the other for the rest of the season then no but I’m not opposed to moving on from him. See what trade value he has before you go that route, though. He’s still good for K’s.

      • Frank White says:
        (link)

Well I’m 1-3 ( league started late) and I’m close this week in scoring but he has a lot of pitchers left. Anyway I don’t have a stream spot and if I cut him then I can stream pitchers from TODAY TO Sunday and then all the time. What you think??
