Daisuke Matsuzaka returned from his bout of Terriblitis to pitch effectively vs. the Angels. 6 IP, 6 baserunners, 5 Ks. He almost looked as good as when he won the MVP of the World Baseball Classic. Ah, yes, Selig, it’s a brilliant idea. We’re a global game now. Next time I’m in Italy, my paisans and I will talk all about baseball over our Chianti. I’m not a huge fan of Dice-K (the walks), but he was solid in his rehab stint and he does get the Orioles next. That’s not a terrible match up. I wouldn’t own him, but we can still get along if you do. One love! Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
Jake Peavy – The on again, on again, then off again, then briefly on, then briefly off, then on again comeback is on again for Saturday vs. the Royals.
Victor Martinez – Here’s an SAT question for you. Martinez left the club for “personal reasons.” Grey knows what it means when his girlfriend takes off a day from work for “personal reasons.” So this means that Martinez left the club because of what?
Michael Young – He kept saying he would return on Friday. Then he returned yesterday. Then he was lifted for a pinch hitter after one at-bat. See what happens to liars. He now says he really will be back this Friday. Mmm-hmm.
Andy Pettitte – Will miss a start with a sore shoulder. I wouldn’t be surprised if most of the Yankee team has a “sore shoulder” on and off for the next few weeks as they gear up for the playoffs.
Carlos Marmol – Piniella calls Marmol the closer for 2010. With the amount of walks Marmol gives up, I don’t think Piniella should cancel the Milk of Magnesia bulk order just yet.
Tommy Hanson – 7 IP, 6 baserunners, 8 Ks and his 10th Win. He has a 2.65 ERA on the year with nearly a K/IP. He far exceeded my expectations for him or, really, any rookie pitcher.
Adam LaRoche – 4-for-4, 2 HRs yesterday. Maybe if LaRoche starts playing in Venezuela in the winter, then by April he’ll think it’s the All-Star Break.
Matt Wieters – 3-for-4, 5 RBIs and a homer yesterday. For everyone’s sake, hope he doesn’t have a great final three weeks, so people partially forget about him next year.
Geovany Soto – 2-for-5, 3 RBIs and a homer. Speaking of catchers who drove you mad this year, Soto’s been hot in September, hitting over .350.
Yovani Gallardo - 5 1/3 IP, 7 ER, 12 baserunners. YoGa, why do you stress me? I would’ve totally accepted him getting scratched before this game rather than this start.
Robinson Tejada – 5 IP, 1 ER, 5 Ks. He was highlighted in yesterday’s post about borderline starters. You scroll down. Also, it’s Ta-HEY-duh not Tay-HA-duh, but both are from Baní, Dominican Republic. You think in Baní there’s a lot of people saying, “Is it hey or ha?”
Miguel Olivo – Hit his 20th homer yesterday. He gets so incredibly hot when he’s actually hitting the ball and not striking out. I wouldn’t be surprised if Olivo hits 5 more homers in the next two weeks.
Magglio Ordonez – Went 0-for-3 with a strikeout, but the 3 at-bats will mean he’ll make $18 million next year. Just in case you wanted a reason to run into traffic.
Travis Snider – 2 HRs yesterday. See about 4 1/2 inches above under Wieters for why we don’t want Snider to get too hot. Unless, I guess, if you own him. But that’s just selfish. Think about us!
Nick Swisher – 6 for his last 13 with a homer as he hits over .300 in September.
Cliff Lee – The Adverb threw a shutout with 9 Ks vs. the Nationals.
David Ortiz – HR yesterday. I don’t own him, so, honestly, I don’t pay too much attention to how poor Ortiz is hitting on a day-to-day basis. But, with that said, he’s batting .233. When he bats, the opposing team should move the left side of the infield into the dugout.
Roy Oswalt – 5 IP, 4 ER, 3 Ks vs. the Reds. Charlie Hough wearing a Wolverine Mechanical Claw from Toys R Us could strike out 3 Reds.
Kaz Matsui – HR yesterday and has 4 steals in the last week. I’m guessing here, but I betcha he’s going to be in Friday’s Buy/Sell.
Heath Bell – 1 IP, 2 ER and the Bell has tolled every time in his last three appearances, giving up 7 runs. Meanwhile, Grey notices Luke Gregerson has 15 consecutive scoreless innings dating back a month.
Barry Zito – 7 IP, 2 ER, 9 Ks. He gets the Diamondbacks next. Not a terrible start, but he’ll be facing Haren.
Chipper Jones – Guess what? Glass Chipper’s out for a few more days, might be longer. Punt!
Carlos Beltran – 5-for-20, 1 homer, 2 RBIs, 0 steals and he’s sat out three games since his return. Cust kayin’.
Francisco Rodriguez – Left the club to be with his wife as she gave birth. This would’ve been so much easier if he would’ve just knocked up Aaron Hill’s wife.

Also of note: Ubaldo Jimenez got rocked for 7 ER in 2.2 innings, ending his streak of 12 quality starts. Even more impressive – it was the first time since April 25th that he’d failed to pitch at least 6 innings. Dude’s solid … except for last night, that is.

Are there any Brewers fans out there who actually watch YoGa pitch? He’s never had control issues throughout all levels of baseball (his highest BB/9 at any level was 3.26), but he is walking EVERYONE since May and his current BB/9 is 4.50 and climbing each game. He’s walked three or more men in all but three outings since May 3 (and two of those outings were only 5 innings). Is he trading velocity/Ks for control?
The high K/9 is great, but he has regressed in his walks and HR allowed since his masterful rookie campaign in 2007. The good news is he’s missing more bats and he seems like he is built to handle 200 inning seasons, but I am wary of YoGa for 2010. The Ks will be there, but a K/BB of 2.0 and no special gifts for suppressing HR means he should be a 4.00, 1.35, 13-13 pitcher. Not a top 20 pitcher, but he will be drafted like one. I much prefer Ubie for 2010.

@mr baseball: I wouldn’t be surprised to see BJ Upton have a profitable 2010. He’s proven that he is a true 40 steals guy. So even if he is only a 12 HR player, that’s a total of 52 HR and steals, which will make him very valuable as long as he can hit around .270.
.270, playing every day at the top of any lineup with great speed and a 9% – 12% BB% means that he should log 90+ runs. He could be a faster version of Victorino, but with a lower AVG.
That being said, he burned me this year and I will wait until round 8-10 for someone like Morgan, Bourn, etc. Or maybe Pierre will get a starting job somewhere.

i have a tough decision to make going into playoffs. I’m in a h2h cbs league so lineups lock weekly. I want to drop spare hitters that I wont use to stock up on 2 start pitching and cock-block my opponents.
I need to decide to keep either Pence or Cruz down the stretch and either Ar-Ram and Votto. I’m pretty sure i’d drop votto, but the OF decision is much more difficult.
Do you like this strategy? and if so, who should I drop out of those guys?

@Jo: Something I do in my weekly league when I’m deciding between two guys is to look at who the hitter will be facing the next week. You want to see favorable lefty/righty splits and you want to be wary of hitters facing tough pitchers. Similarly, if your hitter is facing junky pitching (e.g. the Mets), jump on that!
That being said, anything can happen in a week so it doesn’t really matter who you choose.

@Jo: and count the number of games in the week. A 6 game week is much worse than a 7 game week. Over the course of a season you never bench your stars, but in those H2H weekly battles, so much is about logging the at bats.

@Jo: They are two diff’t types of players. Bourn = AVG, speed, runs. Cruz = power, RBI, some speed.
And in a one week period, anything can happen. You look at matchups, splits, ballparks, etc. but it’s out of your hands.
I like both those guys…I would be using both.

weekly leagues make each matchup fair, similar to a real game. The lineups lock so its set in stone for that week, people cant change their lineups to get more at bats or pitcher starts then their opponent.. just like in a baseball game, you get the same amount of batters/pitchers

@Jo: I like weekly leagues because you can set your lineup and actually go on a vacation or spend a weekend away from the computer without worrying that one of your players is going to get a day off and you didn’t get a chance to cycle in your bench player. Same for rain-outs, day-to-day injuries, etc. Less daily maintenance and gamesmanship.
But I don’t like H2H leagues because baseball is a sport that needs a full season to shake itself out. The annual difference between a player that goes .280-20-80-80 and .300-30-100-100 is huge, but in any given week, the first player can easily outperform the second. I would never be surprised to see LaRoche have a better week than Miggy, but that’s not going to happen over a season.

@mr baseball: @Neil: I agree with Neil in looking ahead (and behind) to matchups. Cruz faced Oak and Sea in September, two teams he will be facing again in the last 2 weeks. He slugged .438. Pence will be facing Phi and Cin whom he faced in September, slugging .857. Those are the most telling indicators that caught my attention. Yes, anything can happen, but you want to go with the side with the less risk/greatest upside. I’d run with Pence. (For September, Pence slugging .592 to Cruz’s .519).

Soriano is out of the question, unless you are hoping for a Derek Lee’s 09 kind of season. B.J. Upton’s body-build suggests he can’t be rely on providing any sorts of power. Josh Hamilton and Quentin are power bats but they have to prove they can stay health first before we draft them at round 5 or 4. Carlos Beltran…I don’t know nothing about him.

@Jo: @Neil: @mr baseball: What I gave you was the shorthand version. Much better is to matchup individual pitchers. It makes a difference if they faced the top end of a lineup, say Seattle and King Felix or the schmo end of the lineup. I go to these lengths:
TRY to project the exact pitchers that a player will be facing (at least for the next week). Then I record in a spreadsheet that pitcher’s road ERA or home ERA as the hitter will be facing them. When I get all six pitchers ERA’s, I average them. At this point I have projected ERAs that each player will be facing. Then I look at the players’ slugging (or important stat that you need) home and away. Most of the time I get a pretty clear picture of who is projected to do best. If the players perform to expectations, I get a clear edge (or at least avoid the mistake). If the one with poorer projections does better, and the one with better projections under-performs, well, they come out about even, no great loss.
Don’t have time to do these for your for Pence and Cruz (watching the grandkids).

Jo – .. just like in a baseball game, you get the same amount of batters/pitchers – what planet are you playing on – beleive me one team is going to have more inning pitch than the other that week and one team is going to get more atbats – and in the real world of baseball if a players gets hurt on monday – the major league club doesn’t leave that position vacant – this format does not make the match up more fair for the week since you can’t pickup players during the week

Do I start De La Rosa vs the G-men tonight? My thoughts on it are that De La Rosa is facing Cain at SF, which means the Rockies will likely not score very often, lessening the chances of a win. The Giants have scored over 7 runs their past 3 games, hammering Billingsley and even Ubaldo. Several of the Giants fringe players, like Uribe, are on fire right now. All of this increases the chances of a 3IP 5ER line that I cannot afford right now. I am leaning towards sitting him, but it is tough to sit someone who has been so profitable. Any expert opinion appreciated.
Background: Yahoo 12 team league. I am at +40 IP. I reside in 2nd place, 5pts behind leader.

Go on to say neither has shown much power (Pence slugging .592 in September to Cruz’s .519). Then say “pick up the hot hitter”. If Pence’s .592 isn’t hotter than Cruz’s .519, what are you relying on?

Grey or ANYONE- is it even possible to set yahoo settings so that the draft goes 1 thru 12 picks then the #1 pick picks again at #13????
Some idiot in my league suggested this, its a super competitive league, of course its one of the idiots in the losers bracket, and he has three other ding dongs agreeing with him, of course all in the losers bracket, i mean hell why wouldnt they want to take albery pujols or hanley next year and then get the 13th pick as well rather than wait til 24???????
please help with this, i would never want to do this, if i win it all this year i draft 12th and would then get the 24th pick? thats horse puckey!!!!

oh and we’re doing a redraft and contracts next year to fix our keeper league problems, so they’d be able to contract these guys for 3 years then as well, which makes it even more bogus

this type of draft is used , somewhat successfully , in keeper leagues .
it is designed to speed up league “parity” , and can be a selling point when trying to recruit replacement owners to take over teams that have been run completely into the ground .
i would caution that hold-over owners looking for a “do-over” are perhaps not competitive enough for your level of play .

@Simply Fred: Are you kidding? That game epitomizes what the LAA-BOS playoff games are always like. Multiple lead changes, weird baserunning plays, infield hits everywhere, the LAA closer blowing it at the end, possibly with the aid of some weird calls.
I still can’t believe they called the baserunner out on the botched squeeze play even though Varitek dropped the ball applying the tag.
