Dice-K Puts Extra Meat On Gyro
Daisuke Matsuzaka returned from his bout of Terriblitis to pitch effectively vs. the Angels. 6 IP, 6 baserunners, 5 Ks. He almost looked as good as when he won the MVP of the World Baseball Classic. Ah, yes, Selig, it’s a brilliant idea. We’re a global game now. Next time I’m in Italy, my paisans and I will talk all about baseball over our Chianti. I’m not a huge fan of Dice-K (the walks), but he was solid in his rehab stint and he does get the Orioles next. That’s not a terrible match up. I wouldn’t own him, but we can still get along if you do. One love! Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
Jake Peavy – The on again, on again, then off again, then briefly on, then briefly off, then on again comeback is on again for Saturday vs. the Royals.
Victor Martinez – Here’s an SAT question for you. Martinez left the club for “personal reasons.” Grey knows what it means when his girlfriend takes off a day from work for “personal reasons.” So this means that Martinez left the club because of what?
Michael Young – He kept saying he would return on Friday. Then he returned yesterday. Then he was lifted for a pinch hitter after one at-bat. See what happens to liars. He now says he really will be back this Friday. Mmm-hmm.
Andy Pettitte – Will miss a start with a sore shoulder. I wouldn’t be surprised if most of the Yankee team has a “sore shoulder” on and off for the next few weeks as they gear up for the playoffs.
Carlos Marmol – Piniella calls Marmol the closer for 2010. With the amount of walks Marmol gives up, I don’t think Piniella should cancel the Milk of Magnesia bulk order just yet.
Tommy Hanson – 7 IP, 6 baserunners, 8 Ks and his 10th Win. He has a 2.65 ERA on the year with nearly a K/IP. He far exceeded my expectations for him or, really, any rookie pitcher.
Adam LaRoche – 4-for-4, 2 HRs yesterday. Maybe if LaRoche starts playing in Venezuela in the winter, then by April he’ll think it’s the All-Star Break.
Matt Wieters – 3-for-4, 5 RBIs and a homer yesterday. For everyone’s sake, hope he doesn’t have a great final three weeks, so people partially forget about him next year.
Geovany Soto – 2-for-5, 3 RBIs and a homer. Speaking of catchers who drove you mad this year, Soto’s been hot in September, hitting over .350.
Yovani Gallardo - 5 1/3 IP, 7 ER, 12 baserunners. YoGa, why do you stress me? I would’ve totally accepted him getting scratched before this game rather than this start.
Robinson Tejada – 5 IP, 1 ER, 5 Ks. He was highlighted in yesterday’s post about borderline starters. You scroll down. Also, it’s Ta-HEY-duh not Tay-HA-duh, but both are from Baní, Dominican Republic. You think in Baní there’s a lot of people saying, “Is it hey or ha?”
Miguel Olivo – Hit his 20th homer yesterday. He gets so incredibly hot when he’s actually hitting the ball and not striking out. I wouldn’t be surprised if Olivo hits 5 more homers in the next two weeks.
Magglio Ordonez – Went 0-for-3 with a strikeout, but the 3 at-bats will mean he’ll make $18 million next year. Just in case you wanted a reason to run into traffic.
Travis Snider – 2 HRs yesterday. See about 4 1/2 inches above under Wieters for why we don’t want Snider to get too hot. Unless, I guess, if you own him. But that’s just selfish. Think about us!
Nick Swisher – 6 for his last 13 with a homer as he hits over .300 in September.
Cliff Lee – The Adverb threw a shutout with 9 Ks vs. the Nationals.
David Ortiz – HR yesterday. I don’t own him, so, honestly, I don’t pay too much attention to how poor Ortiz is hitting on a day-to-day basis. But, with that said, he’s batting .233. When he bats, the opposing team should move the left side of the infield into the dugout.
Roy Oswalt – 5 IP, 4 ER, 3 Ks vs. the Reds. Charlie Hough wearing a Wolverine Mechanical Claw from Toys R Us could strike out 3 Reds.
Kaz Matsui – HR yesterday and has 4 steals in the last week. I’m guessing here, but I betcha he’s going to be in Friday’s Buy/Sell.
Heath Bell – 1 IP, 2 ER and the Bell has tolled every time in his last three appearances, giving up 7 runs. Meanwhile, Grey notices Luke Gregerson has 15 consecutive scoreless innings dating back a month.
Barry Zito – 7 IP, 2 ER, 9 Ks. He gets the Diamondbacks next. Not a terrible start, but he’ll be facing Haren.
Chipper Jones – Guess what? Glass Chipper’s out for a few more days, might be longer. Punt!
Carlos Beltran – 5-for-20, 1 homer, 2 RBIs, 0 steals and he’s sat out three games since his return. Cust kayin’.
Francisco Rodriguez – Left the club to be with his wife as she gave birth. This would’ve been so much easier if he would’ve just knocked up Aaron Hill’s wife.

Great roundup!
Also of note: Ubaldo Jimenez got rocked for 7 ER in 2.2 innings, ending his streak of 12 quality starts. Even more impressive – it was the first time since April 25th that he’d failed to pitch at least 6 innings. Dude’s solid … except for last night, that is.
September 16th, 2009 at 7:34 am
Ubaldo Jimenez – Fantasy owners only remember the pitchers last start – so what Jimenez been lights out for 12 starts in a rwo
September 16th, 2009 at 7:38 am
Ubaldo Jimenez – I don’t think he is going to on anyone radar next year as one of the top pitchers to be taken in the draft – so I will wait and grab him when the moment is right
September 16th, 2009 at 7:41 am
looks like there are no problems today – RIGHT ! they are all in panic mode waiting for the return of the man call Grey
September 16th, 2009 at 7:47 am
some of Greys top 10 Outfileders listed this year – its not his fault for the ranking he was under pressure from matthew berry to list them in the top 10
Carlos Beltran
Josh Hamilton
Alfonso Soriano
Carlos Quentin
B.J. Upton
LOOKS LIKE THERE IS GOING TO BE A CHANGING OR THE TOP 10 OUTFIELD GUARD NEXT YEAR
September 16th, 2009 at 7:50 am
So since Grey is not here today – what do you guys think of the outfielders I listed above on how they will perform next year? Make Grey proud of you !

Are there any Brewers fans out there who actually watch YoGa pitch? He’s never had control issues throughout all levels of baseball (his highest BB/9 at any level was 3.26), but he is walking EVERYONE since May and his current BB/9 is 4.50 and climbing each game. He’s walked three or more men in all but three outings since May 3 (and two of those outings were only 5 innings). Is he trading velocity/Ks for control?
The high K/9 is great, but he has regressed in his walks and HR allowed since his masterful rookie campaign in 2007. The good news is he’s missing more bats and he seems like he is built to handle 200 inning seasons, but I am wary of YoGa for 2010. The Ks will be there, but a K/BB of 2.0 and no special gifts for suppressing HR means he should be a 4.00, 1.35, 13-13 pitcher. Not a top 20 pitcher, but he will be drafted like one. I much prefer Ubie for 2010.

@mr baseball: I wouldn’t be surprised to see BJ Upton have a profitable 2010. He’s proven that he is a true 40 steals guy. So even if he is only a 12 HR player, that’s a total of 52 HR and steals, which will make him very valuable as long as he can hit around .270.
.270, playing every day at the top of any lineup with great speed and a 9% – 12% BB% means that he should log 90+ runs. He could be a faster version of Victorino, but with a lower AVG.
That being said, he burned me this year and I will wait until round 8-10 for someone like Morgan, Bourn, etc. Or maybe Pierre will get a starting job somewhere.
September 16th, 2009 at 8:04 am

Yovani Gallardo was secret agent 66 at Control
He left CONTROL due to the fact he had some differences with Maxwell Smart when he over heard the Chief and Maxwell Smart speadking about him while using the Cone of Silence and Joined KAOS – since then his Control; went down hill
September 16th, 2009 at 8:10 am
@Grey: It comes down to next week, the championship matchup. What catcher do you pickup off waivers to replace John Baker…Olivo, Martin, Ruiz, Barajas, Laird?
September 16th, 2009 at 8:11 am
Grey is going to Beantown to scout – P. Byrd for his next update
September 16th, 2009 at 8:11 am
i have a tough decision to make going into playoffs. I’m in a h2h cbs league so lineups lock weekly. I want to drop spare hitters that I wont use to stock up on 2 start pitching and cock-block my opponents.
I need to decide to keep either Pence or Cruz down the stretch and either Ar-Ram and Votto. I’m pretty sure i’d drop votto, but the OF decision is much more difficult.
Do you like this strategy? and if so, who should I drop out of those guys?
September 16th, 2009 at 8:15 am
Russell Martin – you are going to get one or two hits a game from him – some power and maybe be will even steal first base for you – Martin is heating up
September 16th, 2009 at 8:19 am
I need to decide to keep either Pence or Cruz – I just flip a coin – it says drop Cruz – should I make it 2 out of 3
September 16th, 2009 at 8:20 am
@Jo: Something I do in my weekly league when I’m deciding between two guys is to look at who the hitter will be facing the next week. You want to see favorable lefty/righty splits and you want to be wary of hitters facing tough pitchers. Similarly, if your hitter is facing junky pitching (e.g. the Mets), jump on that!
That being said, anything can happen in a week so it doesn’t really matter who you choose.
September 16th, 2009 at 8:22 am
what is the deal with a weekly league anyway – how about a league that has no moves in it at all – all you do is draft your team and check your team on the last day of the season
September 16th, 2009 at 8:24 am
@Neil: I was looking at that, and the matchups are pretty much a split. Who do you like between Nelson Cruz and Pence?
September 16th, 2009 at 8:24 am
@Jo: and count the number of games in the week. A 6 game week is much worse than a 7 game week. Over the course of a season you never bench your stars, but in those H2H weekly battles, so much is about logging the at bats.
September 16th, 2009 at 8:28 am
you guys put too much pressure on Grey with all of your tough decision – you are driving the poor man to drink
http://www.lisashea.com/lisabase/cocktails/images/strawdaq.jpg
September 16th, 2009 at 8:30 am
@Jo: They are two diff’t types of players. Bourn = AVG, speed, runs. Cruz = power, RBI, some speed.
And in a one week period, anything can happen. You look at matchups, splits, ballparks, etc. but it’s out of your hands.
I like both those guys…I would be using both.
September 16th, 2009 at 8:32 am
In my 1st week of the playoffs after getting a bye last week. I’m loyal to no one on my team right now…..with that said, is Laroche going to be a better 1b option than Votto for the next couple weeks?
September 16th, 2009 at 8:34 am
@Frank Rizzo: could be, but I wouldn’t do that move.
September 16th, 2009 at 8:47 am
weekly leagues make each matchup fair, similar to a real game. The lineups lock so its set in stone for that week, people cant change their lineups to get more at bats or pitcher starts then their opponent.. just like in a baseball game, you get the same amount of batters/pitchers
September 16th, 2009 at 8:49 am
GREY-hamilton surely hasnt been taking any batting practice and crawford the last month is .207 ave. 7 runs and 3 steals,(i have raja davis)im in a tight race for the money,i have seth smith garrett jones ,j.d drew and kemp just picked up soto,3 of`s and a utility,crawford and hamilton cost to much to keep,so should i drop 1 or both of them or do you think either will help me,i need hr,s,runs ave,and obp,if i improve even a little in these cats. i could win this thing,any thought?
September 16th, 2009 at 8:56 am
@Jo: I like weekly leagues because you can set your lineup and actually go on a vacation or spend a weekend away from the computer without worrying that one of your players is going to get a day off and you didn’t get a chance to cycle in your bench player. Same for rain-outs, day-to-day injuries, etc. Less daily maintenance and gamesmanship.
But I don’t like H2H leagues because baseball is a sport that needs a full season to shake itself out. The annual difference between a player that goes .280-20-80-80 and .300-30-100-100 is huge, but in any given week, the first player can easily outperform the second. I would never be surprised to see LaRoche have a better week than Miggy, but that’s not going to happen over a season.
September 16th, 2009 at 9:03 am
@mr baseball: @Neil: I agree with Neil in looking ahead (and behind) to matchups. Cruz faced Oak and Sea in September, two teams he will be facing again in the last 2 weeks. He slugged .438. Pence will be facing Phi and Cin whom he faced in September, slugging .857. Those are the most telling indicators that caught my attention. Yes, anything can happen, but you want to go with the side with the less risk/greatest upside. I’d run with Pence. (For September, Pence slugging .592 to Cruz’s .519).
September 16th, 2009 at 9:04 am
@Jo: Sorry, previous for @Jo.
September 16th, 2009 at 9:15 am
oivo or piersynzski?
September 16th, 2009 at 9:22 am
How many of you Andrus owners out there will be dropping him when he goes back to the 9 spot? I can pick The Riot back up, and a no. 9 hitter in a lineup that’s going belly-up doesn’t really appeal to me. Granted, the Cubs just flat-out suck, but at least Theriot hits near the top of the order…
September 16th, 2009 at 9:24 am
@mr baseball: I’ll take Curz over Pence, more speed and more power…
@mr baseball:
Soriano is out of the question, unless you are hoping for a Derek Lee’s 09 kind of season. B.J. Upton’s body-build suggests he can’t be rely on providing any sorts of power. Josh Hamilton and Quentin are power bats but they have to prove they can stay health first before we draft them at round 5 or 4. Carlos Beltran…I don’t know nothing about him.
Sam Fuld is awaiting the results of an X-ray and MRI on the wrist he injured. Foxy Man is getting some momentum…
September 16th, 2009 at 9:26 am
Ryan Howard sucks at his job
September 16th, 2009 at 9:29 am
@Martin: Olivo for power. A.J. for BA, but in this stage of the season, unless you are in a large roster H2H and looking for lineup stable…Olivo is the better bet.
September 16th, 2009 at 9:30 am
@Jo: @Neil: @mr baseball: What I gave you was the shorthand version. Much better is to matchup individual pitchers. It makes a difference if they faced the top end of a lineup, say Seattle and King Felix or the schmo end of the lineup. I go to these lengths:
TRY to project the exact pitchers that a player will be facing (at least for the next week). Then I record in a spreadsheet that pitcher’s road ERA or home ERA as the hitter will be facing them. When I get all six pitchers ERA’s, I average them. At this point I have projected ERAs that each player will be facing. Then I look at the players’ slugging (or important stat that you need) home and away. Most of the time I get a pretty clear picture of who is projected to do best. If the players perform to expectations, I get a clear edge (or at least avoid the mistake). If the one with poorer projections does better, and the one with better projections under-performs, well, they come out about even, no great loss.
Don’t have time to do these for your for Pence and Cruz (watching the grandkids).
September 16th, 2009 at 9:31 am
@simply fred: thanks for those stats, I had pence in there and it just reassures my decision.
@neil: yea, thats definitely another advantage of the weekly leagues. It also puts more emphasis on the draft by making the day to day checking of lineups/stats less important.
September 16th, 2009 at 9:34 am
The Adverb, that’s fantastic!
September 16th, 2009 at 9:36 am
@simply fred: that sounds like a pretty good tool to use. I’ll do that with those guys when i get a chance later. thanks a ton
September 16th, 2009 at 9:37 am
@Lines: Even if Andrus is not batting in 2nd, he still provides more speed than Theriot…unless you need those Runs, otherwise I’ll stick with Andrus.
September 16th, 2009 at 9:39 am
@Jo: Or, you can just wait for Grey’s pick.
September 16th, 2009 at 9:55 am
Alright, I have only two transactions left but I guess I have no choice but to use one on replacing Chipper Jones. I would’ve never believed myself that I would be happy about picking up Freddy Garcia but he helped me. Now I should pick up Juan Uribe? Seriously? Or someone else?
Uribe
Headley
Blake
Encarnacion
Baker
Marte
Carroll
C Guillen
September 16th, 2009 at 10:06 am
Here’s the great thing about the Adverb. His middle name is Phifer. Perfect.
September 16th, 2009 at 10:11 am
for tomorrow… choose 1:
Cueto
Sanchez
MAsterson
thanks!
September 16th, 2009 at 10:15 am
@bwass: RE: Uribe.
He has 6 left against AZ where he has slugged .800.
In the remaining 10 (Alad/4Hchn/ Asd) a combined .200 SLG.
September 16th, 2009 at 10:16 am
@bwass: Uribe->Headley->C Guillen->Blake->EE
@and1mcgee: Cueto, and it’s not close.
September 16th, 2009 at 10:24 am
Does anyone know what the word on Huston Street is? I need a roster spot, and wondering if Franklin Morales is safe to drop.
September 16th, 2009 at 10:26 am
@Nathan: last i heard he was to be ready but wont be cloing right away
September 16th, 2009 at 10:34 am
@AL KOHOLIC: @Nathan: street is back? are they gonna ease him back or? it would be nice if they did it quickly i’m playing a guy with Morales….
September 16th, 2009 at 11:35 am
Jo – .. just like in a baseball game, you get the same amount of batters/pitchers – what planet are you playing on – beleive me one team is going to have more inning pitch than the other that week and one team is going to get more atbats – and in the real world of baseball if a players gets hurt on monday – the major league club doesn’t leave that position vacant – this format does not make the match up more fair for the week since you can’t pickup players during the week
September 16th, 2009 at 11:39 am
Hope you find the Internet back east.
From a reader in Italy: here’s to reading Razzball with my Chianti instead of my cappuccino.
September 16th, 2009 at 11:40 am
@Tony: last report was to ease him back,grey got the hotdog shit again?
September 16th, 2009 at 11:42 am
Joel Pinero, kindly die. You pitched extremely well until I traded for you and then you sucked. Jerk. It’s like the 2006 Red Sox all over again.
September 16th, 2009 at 11:44 am
@mr baseball: I’ll take Curz over Pence, more speed and more power…
I haven’t seen much power out of either of them lately and if you depending on Cruz to win the stolen bases stat for you for the week – good luck – I would make a move and pick up the hot hitter at this time in the season – both these players are talented but they seen better days this season – nothing like a HOT STREAK
September 16th, 2009 at 11:45 am
Cueto
Sanchez
MAsterson
thanks!
MASTERSON – me and Cueto had a falling out
September 16th, 2009 at 11:47 am

September 16th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
@mr baseball: Yea, those crazy New Yorkers do like to live on The Edge.
September 16th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
My hatred for Joel Piniero knows no bounds right now.
September 16th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Do I start De La Rosa vs the G-men tonight? My thoughts on it are that De La Rosa is facing Cain at SF, which means the Rockies will likely not score very often, lessening the chances of a win. The Giants have scored over 7 runs their past 3 games, hammering Billingsley and even Ubaldo. Several of the Giants fringe players, like Uribe, are on fire right now. All of this increases the chances of a 3IP 5ER line that I cannot afford right now. I am leaning towards sitting him, but it is tough to sit someone who has been so profitable. Any expert opinion appreciated.
Background: Yahoo 12 team league. I am at +40 IP. I reside in 2nd place, 5pts behind leader.
September 16th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
@Nathan: At least you didn’t trade for Washburn.
September 16th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
@Bob Walk: Yea, can’t really argue with that, can I.
September 16th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
De La Rosa over his last three outings is pitching better than Cain’s last three outings

Bob Walk Says: sounds like you are Walking A Tightrope While Wearing Combat Boots – you have to expect as least 3 earn runs over 7 innings from De LaRosa and about the same from Cain – if your team pitching staff can handle this then put him in – if not give him the night off
over – under is 3 for De LaRosa
September 16th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
@mr baseball: Respectfully, I don’t quite understand what you are saying. On the one hand you say you would take Cruz over Pence. Go on to say neither has shown much power (Pence slugging .592 in September to Cruz’s .519). Then say “pick up the hot hitter”. If Pence’s .592 isn’t hotter than Cruz’s .519, what are you relying on?
September 16th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
@Simply Fred: Oh, I see. You were quoting Quintero (but left out the @ or reference). We see it the same way.

@Simply Fred: You can make that 5-5. Alas, too late for me.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:41 pm

My add/drop timing is impeccable as usual.

@ all :
am giving Grey the benefit of doubt , here .
probably his fear of flying (/ crashing) caused him to rush this post a bit :
robinson te-hey-duh , (RP) spells his name tejeda .
miggy te-hah-duh , (SS) spells his name tejada .
notice the different vowel after the letter “j” (jay) .
other than that , “they” are one and the same player .
yep , it’s true .
have you ever seen them on the same ball-field , at the same time ??
and unless mr. baseball , or anyone else , can produce a photo of the them standing side-by-side , i will continue to believe that .
and you wonder why latin ballplayers age so quickly .
it’s cuz they’re forever jumping on planes and flying all over the place , pretending to be each other .
September 16th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
man baldy jimenez burned me last night! oh well still solid. in other news, is Chipper Jones worth dropping for some saves or wins? I do have Casey McGhee and DeRosa to cover for the man of glass.
@Nick: Olivo
@Martin: Olivo
@Eric: Ha!
@mr baseball: Hehe
@Razzin: Nice
@and1mcgee: Sanchez
@Tom_Emanski: That really is.

@Bob Walk: I’d sit him.
@big o: To think I took 13 years of Spanish, too. Nice theory on plane jumping.

Grey or ANYONE- is it even possible to set yahoo settings so that the draft goes 1 thru 12 picks then the #1 pick picks again at #13????
Some idiot in my league suggested this, its a super competitive league, of course its one of the idiots in the losers bracket, and he has three other ding dongs agreeing with him, of course all in the losers bracket, i mean hell why wouldnt they want to take albery pujols or hanley next year and then get the 13th pick as well rather than wait til 24???????
please help with this, i would never want to do this, if i win it all this year i draft 12th and would then get the 24th pick? thats horse puckey!!!!
September 16th, 2009 at 5:33 pm
oh and we’re doing a redraft and contracts next year to fix our keeper league problems, so they’d be able to contract these guys for 3 years then as well, which makes it even more bogus
September 16th, 2009 at 5:38 pm
@Grey: Trade in Montero in for Olivo?
No harm at this stage, right?
September 16th, 2009 at 5:40 pm
@Steve: I mean, it’s obviously going to spark an offensive explosion from Montero, but still…
September 16th, 2009 at 5:42 pm
@TYY:
this type of draft is used , somewhat successfully , in keeper leagues .
it is designed to speed up league “parity” , and can be a selling point when trying to recruit replacement owners to take over teams that have been run completely into the ground .
i would caution that hold-over owners looking for a “do-over” are perhaps not competitive enough for your level of play .
@big o: Glad to be alive.
@TYY: I really don’t think it’s possible, but I’m not sure.
@Steve: Sure, try it.
September 16th, 2009 at 5:56 pm
Go with Edwin Jackson vs KC (Greinke) or Jonathan Sanchez @ LAD (Padilla)? Sanchez has been pitching much better, but has a tougher match-up (although the opposing SP isn’t nearly as imposing)…
September 16th, 2009 at 6:02 pm
@Grey: thought you had that hotdog shit again,,josh hamilton ,street and crawford(200 7 runs 3 steals last month)im fine in steals,need r,ebi,hr ,ave and obp,time to loose any of those guys?
September 16th, 2009 at 6:06 pm
@Grey: Still alive Grey, just barely.
Somebody shoot me………………….
September 16th, 2009 at 6:08 pm
@AL KOHOLIC: You still playin this shit????????? I haven’t quit, but gave up long ago.
September 16th, 2009 at 6:14 pm
@Grey:
got a call from dice-k .
(having never studied japanese) , i think he wants you to lay off the greek food and to try the sea urchin sushi , while you’re out here on the east coast .
similar in taste to lobster tomalley ( the green stuff inside a cooked lobster’s head) .
if you’re one of those guys who doesn’t “do” that sort of thing ,
stick with the chicks-@-fil-A .
you’ll never know what you’re missing .
@Adam: Sanchez
@AL KOHOLIC: I’d lose Street if you don’t need saves, unless you worry someone who does need saves will grab then lose Hamilton.
@BigFatHippo: Stay un-shot.
@big o: Love Chick-Fil-A.
September 16th, 2009 at 6:33 pm
Hey Ryan Howard, come here. It’s OK, just come here, I won’t bite. Seriously, come over, just wanna say something…
DO YOUR JOB AND HIT MOTHERLOVING HOME RUNS, GOT IT??!!
September 16th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
Also, entire Texas Rangers Baseball Club, do something!! You’re killing me here.
I hate fantasy baseball
September 16th, 2009 at 6:49 pm
@BigFatHippo: yeah hippo,still got a chance in the money league,im in 3rd,1.5 points from 2nd and 3 from 1st
September 16th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
@Grey:
so , i got so caught up with my zig when they zag (tomko) ,
that i’ve almost completely ruined it by zagging with laffey , today .
now , i’m contemplating mortensen .
i know that you’ve advised masterson , but ,
a) both could completely kill you with their walks ,
b) clayton is coming off his only win , and ,
d) all A ’s children go to heaven .
how dumb is this idea ?? in a points league play-off , where K’s = +1 , innings = +1 , BB = -1 , ER = -1 , total bases allowed = -1 , Wins = + 10 and losses = – 5 pts .
do i stand a fighting chance of breaking even with this pick-up ?
or ,
e) just shoot myself , now .
thanking you , in advance .
September 16th, 2009 at 6:56 pm
@Tom_Emanski: amazing that Oakland’s junior varsity pitching squad has been totally annihilating them all series; at home no less! As an owner of Kinsler, Cruz, and Davis I’m confounded
September 16th, 2009 at 7:01 pm
@big o: Grey always advises against shooting, unless shooting your mouth off, then he’s all for it………..it’s a Cali thing.
September 16th, 2009 at 7:08 pm
@AL KOHOLIC: Just do it!
insert Nike swoosh here Steve, unless you need a patent to do that, or express written permission, or a court order, or an act of Congress, or a written slip from your mother, or a waste manifest, osha approved, epa regulated and signed in triplicate, etc. etc. etc…………………………..
September 16th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
Should end dream of Downs returning to closer’s role (this week).
September 16th, 2009 at 7:40 pm
Please rank (since I’ll probably pick more than one of them) these spot starters for Friday :
(H2H playoffs, I need W and K and I don’t really care about ERA and WHIP thanks to Ubaldo, Nolasco and Frasor)
Stauffer @ Pit
Padilla vs SF
Norris @ MIL
Smoltz vs CHC
Plefrey vs WSH
Richmond @ TB
@Tom_Emanski: Ha!
@big o: Don’t do either if they can hurt you. They’re risky.
@Vince: Padilla, Smoltz, Stauffer….
September 16th, 2009 at 7:50 pm
Should we start Morrow tomorrow vs CHW?
@GTS: It’s not a terrible start, but it’s a bit risky.
September 16th, 2009 at 8:25 pm
@Grey:
if NESN is in your local viewing area , you would have seen that fuentes clearly struck-out rookie nick green , (with a should-have-been called 3rd strike) with the bases loaded .
instead of the save , he walked in the tying run and then got the loss on a weak , opposite-field , fly-ball in front of the slow , flat-footed juan rivera .
home-town call .
September 16th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
@big o: @Grey: Just saw it live on TV here. Not really a close call, even to my untrained eye.
September 16th, 2009 at 8:31 pm
@Grey:
re: masterson – mortensen :
my only choice is mortensen , or , no mortensen .
it’s a question of “as long as it’s not negative points” , it’s good .
now what ?
September 16th, 2009 at 8:34 pm
yep .
now , back to the colorado game .
can you make de la rosa strike the next 11 batters out ?
September 16th, 2009 at 8:35 pm
and , why in hell are these guys serving cerviche out of a chuck wagon ??
September 16th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
actually , i like that line .
“like serving cerviche out of a chuck wagon” .
September 16th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
gotta be Krispie over Schmokakis by now, right?
September 16th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
@Grey: Now before you get too excited about tomorrow’s post on Wieters: last night’s HR was against a reliver with a 4.82 ERA and tonight’s against a reliever with a 4.39 ERA. cust kayin’
September 16th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
@Simply Fred: edit: reliever
September 16th, 2009 at 8:46 pm
@big o: @Steve: The best part was that Green struck out not once (on the 3-2 pitch) but twice (on the check swing).
I love how the pitch hits Napoli’s mit and then 1…. 2…. 3…..NOWTHEY’REPISSED!
What a weird-ass game.
September 16th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
@Nathan: @big o: @Steve: May be just the incentive Angels need to have a grudge playoff time.
September 16th, 2009 at 8:49 pm
reliver – pitcher who emerges from the bullpen to give you frightening vietnam like flashbacks of his past disasters everytime he kazaams on the mound; see also: Lidge, Brad
September 16th, 2009 at 8:55 pm
@Nathan: I’d forgotten about the check-swing. Even Green thought he’d gone around.
September 16th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
@Simply Fred: Are you kidding? That game epitomizes what the LAA-BOS playoff games are always like. Multiple lead changes, weird baserunning plays, infield hits everywhere, the LAA closer blowing it at the end, possibly with the aid of some weird calls.
I still can’t believe they called the baserunner out on the botched squeeze play even though Varitek dropped the ball applying the tag.
That wasn’t an incentive. That, my friend, was a preview.
September 16th, 2009 at 8:57 pm
@Steve: Right! He totally did the “aw man, I blew it, the game’s over” face.
Why was he pinch hitting for Kotchman there, anyway?
September 16th, 2009 at 8:59 pm
Also, no one does the “Are you f***ing kidding me???!!!” face like Mike Scioscia.
September 16th, 2009 at 9:01 pm
I started serial killer vs. the white sox thanks to Grey… working out nicely so far!
September 16th, 2009 at 9:13 pm
@Nathan: I happened to have that LA closer. Thanks for the grace to add: “…possibly with the aid of some weird calls.” Game on again tomorrow night!
@big o: Yeah, Jepsen didn’t look that good though.
@big o: re: ceviche – ha! Can they get rid of Robin too? Mortenson – bleh.
@penpen: Sure
@GTS: Cool
September 16th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
I totally forgot about this:
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f383/WhalerMonkey/Aybar.gif
my very favorite Sox-Angles moment.
@Nathan: Nice
September 16th, 2009 at 9:54 pm
The Astros have shut down Roy Oswalt for the rest of the season due to lingering soreness in his back.
September 16th, 2009 at 9:55 pm
The Brewers are considering shutting down Yovani Gallardo for the rest of the season.
The club wants to limit his workload after he has thrown the fifth-most pitches in the National League this season.
September 16th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
Quite an outing from Morales there.
Thanks bro.
September 16th, 2009 at 10:22 pm
@Steve: only 1 ER if gameday is to be believed.
September 16th, 2009 at 10:26 pm
@Nathan: I hope so. ESPN Fantasycast showing 3. You’d hope that the MLB scoring service can be trusted…
September 16th, 2009 at 10:58 pm
Yeah I hope it is a Ticker Shock.
September 16th, 2009 at 11:02 pm
Cueto scratched for tomorrow. Maloney starting in his place. Cueto sent home sick… whatever that means.
