Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

As many of you know, Bruce Bochy has the biggest head in the major leagues.  As a player, when he was traded, he would have to take his helmet with him to his new club because the new team wouldn’t have a helmet big enough for him.  It made traveling easier, since everything he needed would fit inside the helmet.  We all know the story about how when Giants rookie, Joe Panik, was called up, he forgot to make arrangements to stay somewhere in the San Fran area, so he draped a sheet over Bochy’s cap and slept in there.  Lots of good has come of Bochy’s giant melon.  Of course, the 27-pound bowling ball has its drawbacks.  Like when he went to see Toy Story and blocked half the audience.  Lots of angry parents that day.  Or the time he was in South Dakota and people starting climbing up his side thinking he was Mount Rushmore.  Sometimes what would take a person with a normal-sized head a week or two to figure out, thoughts bounce around in Bochy’s Metrodome much longer.  So when Sergio Romo wasn’t good for the month of May, then again in June, it took longer for Bochy to realize a change was needed, but he finally figured it out.  Bochy said Santiago Casilla would replace Romo, then he banged the side of his head for 15 minutes waiting for another thought, and finally it came out that Jeremy Affeldt would see some situational saves, as long as Gilbert Gottfried isn’t introducing Affeldt at games.  Yesterday, Affeldt got hit, and Casilla looked solid as he has all year.  I’d grab Casilla in all leagues if you’re SAGNOF’ing around for saves.  Hopefully, even if Bochy thinks about putting Romo back in the role, it takes a few weeks for that thought to land in the right spot in his cavernous whale head.  Anyway, here’s what else I saw this weekend in fantasy baseball:

Tim Hudson – 8 IP, 2 ER, 5 baserunners, 6 Ks, lowering his ERA to 2.59.  Didn’t see the game, but caught the highlights of Tim Hudson on VH1 Classic.

Homer Bailey – 9 IP, 0 ER, 4 baserunners, 7 Ks.  I hope the strength/conditioning/superstition coach yesterday recorded exactly what Bailey ate and which side of the bed he rolled out of or whatever else it takes to keep him doing the voodoo that he do and keeping him from doing the doo-doo he did do.

Mookie Betts – 1-for-3, 1 run.  I just went over my Mookie Betts fantasy the day before he was called up.  Prescient ain’t just a word you need Dictionary.com to define!

Jon Lester – 8 IP, 0 ER, 7 baserunners, 6 Ks vs. Masahiro Tanaka (9 IP, 2 ER, 8 baserunners, 8 Ks), which resulted in a Red Sox/Yankees game being over in two hours and forty-seven minutes.  This caused problems since the Yankees sell every seat in their stadium twice with the turnover point coming two hours into the game.  “Hey, I only get two innings?  Fuhgeddaboudit!”

Carlos Beltran – 3-for-4 and his 8th homer.  The Zombino pushes his hand out through the dirt in the outfield grass.  And hurts his elbow.  “Stupid hard to move soil!”  That’s the Zombino.  We’ll see if this is the start of anything by Beltran, but he’s batting .220, and was 2-for-22 in the last week prior to this game.

Josh Tomlin – 9 IP, 0 ER, 1 Hit, Zero Walks, 11 Ks.  Easily Tomlin’s best performance since Flirting With Disaster, but that’s what you’d be doing if you picked him up.

Justin Masterson – Cleared to pitch again on Tuesday.  Can’t believe how low he’s stooping.  Before he was throwing one good game, then one lousy game, tricking fantasy owners to trust him after his good game only to get crushed by his bad game.  But, unable to keep up that ruse, he decided to pretend he was pitching bad due to a knee, so now he’s giving fantasy owners hope in a different way.  Only thing left after his next bad start is pretending he fixed a mechanics issue.

Felix Hernandez – 8 IP, 0 ER, 4 baserunners (1 Hit), 9 Ks.  I’m a bit concerned about the three walks to only one hit.  I’m just Josh Tomlin’ing with you, F-Her is the bomb dot gov.

Robinson Cano – 2-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and his 5th homer.  If he hits ten more homers by the close of games tomorrow, we’ll be fine.

Andrew Heaney – 6 IP, 4 ER, 8 baserunners, 4 Ks, ERA up to 5.29.  Potatoes to chips, I’m sure he will be better.  No joke.  Seriously.  He will be.  When?  Well, that’s a whole ‘nother pickle.  Could be his next start, could be next year, could be waiting for him like he’s the second coming of Homer Bailey.

Josh Reddick – To the DL with a strained knee.  It’s the same knee that caused him problems earlier this season.  Could be worse, like whatever caused his ancestors to get that last name.

Nate Freiman – 1-for-4, 3 RBIs as he fills in for Reddick.  Better than the other way around.  You’d wish you weren’t such a Freiman!  Freiman has nice power (14 homers in 76 games in Triple-A), but the A’s will be platooning him.  Of course they will.

Christian Yelich – 1-for-4, 1 run as he was activated from the DL.  Yelich’s mom wouldn’t say it, but she seemed glad to get him out of the house, so she can have her boyfriend, Casey McGehee, come over without awkwardness.

Carlos Gomez – Passed a concussion test after colliding with Ryan Braun.  Segura said, “Try to run into his bat sometime!”  Gomez says he’ll be fine on Tuesday, so that’s day-to-morrow.

Gio Gonzalez – 7 IP, 0 ER, 4 baserunners, 7 Ks in the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday.  The Cubs and Nationals had a rare day off on Sunday due to the Chicago Pride Parade.  I would’ve thought a Chicago parade would’ve been called a Sleuth Parade.

Taijuan Walker – Will start on Monday and now that he’s made us wait 3 months it’s guaranteed he will disappoint.  Yes, this was my best attempt to lower expectations so we’re encouraged by his start.  And that last sentence is defeating the purpose.

Evan Gattis – Had x-rays on his back on Saturday that turned up negative, and will have an MRI when the team gets back to Atlanta.  I’m not one to stick my nose where it doesn’t belong, but the Braves could send Gattis home by himself for the MRI.  Are they afraid he’s going to clean out their bank account and vanish?

Marlon Byrd – 2-for-4 and two solo homers (14, 15), but the Phillies lost.  Laverne and Shirley should’ve never gotten him that Lone Byrd jacket, it’s really gone to his head.

Jimmy Rollins – 3-for-5 and his 14th steal.  Gonna be hard to figure out which Phillie Danny Glover’s going to play.  There’s so many “I’m too old for this sh*t* options.

Hanley Ramirez – Played briefly on Saturday, and then missed Sunday because of a tweaked calf.  Hanley never had a minor calf injury he couldn’t milk.  Pun point!

Clayton Kershaw – 7 IP, 0 ER, 7 baserunners, 13 Ks.  13 Ks is nice, but one baserunner per inning?  Who are you, Ordinary McOrdinarystein?  Got your shizz together!

Lance Lynn – 2 IP, 6 ER.  I guess this wasn’t the game to stream Lynn.  *dresses up as Paula Dean, walks into a soul food restaurant, hands out pats of butter to pelt me with*

Shelby Miller – 5 IP, 6 ER, ERA up to 4.10.  Don’t worry, it’ll get better.  Not that Miller will get better, but at some point you will drop him and your team will get better in general.

Matt Carpenter – 3-for-4 and his 3rd steal.  Last year he would’ve scored 4 runs and knocked in 7 RBIs if he had three hits.  Stupid world balancing itself out!

David Wright – After an MRI on Saturday, he was diagnosed with a bruised rotator cuff.  He’s already hitting for no power.  How much better do you think he’s going to get with a sore rotator cuff?  Much better or much butt-er.  About a month ago, I told you to sell him, saying I would be met (punny!) with resistance.  Of course I was, people love Wright.  He’s a nice guy, and people are clouded by that.  Luckily, if you own him, you can still sell him, because there’s always someone who thinks if they own Wright he will show up at their house to help them get their cat out of a tree.  Wright’s not going to help you with your kitten!  When will people understand this?  I need to take a sauna.

Bartolo Colon – 6 IP, 5 ER.  Damn, the Colon flush.

Lucas Duda – 2-for-4.  It’s rare when a hot schmotato makes it from one week to the next, even rarer (more rare?) when his manager is trying to get himself fired.  Terry Collins should just tell the press that he refused a trade for Jaime Garcia, because there’s already enough Jaimes in New York.  That would get him fired.

Gerrit Cole – 4 IP, 5 ER as he returned from the DL, ERA is now up to 4.02.  The 2nd year pressure is not turning Cole into a diamond, which might be some kind of political protest against blood diamonds.  If so, Sierra Leone stands behind him, but his fantasy owners would prefer he just planned a vacation with Bono in the offseason.

Pedro Alvarez – 2-for-4, 3 RBIs, and his 13th homer, hitting .241.  His numbers have changed dramatically from the last two seasons.  His K-rate is down to 23.8% from 30+, but his line drive rate is way down and infield fly ball rate is up.  In other words, Alvarez is making weak contact.  In other other words, he’s figured out a different way to have a lousy average without striking out as much.

Zach Putnam – Got his first major league save on Saturday and gave up a run in the process.  Jake Petricka picked up his 2nd career save last week.  Eric Surkamp looks like he should be in an American Pie remakeDaniel Webb and Javy Guerra have the pedigree to save games, supposedly, but Ventura doesn’t put them within sniffing distance of a save, and since the late innings have stunk for the White Sox, sniffing distance is really far away.  I own Perestroika, and am telling you because I believe in openness.  In for their next save, could be anyone.

Jose Quintana – 7 IP, 0 ER, 5 baserunners, 7 Ks vs. the Blue Jays (member when they were good?  Feels like years ago, it was weeks.).  I could sit here — and I am sitting — and tell you Quintana isn’t owned anywhere, and has a 3.44 ERA, a 1.28 WHIP and decent K and walk rates, but no one would pick him up.  People don’t care for Quintana, it’s a sad story.  I’ll have to bid on the world’s smallest violin on eBay, so I can play it for him.  Since he’s a streamer, I go to the Stream-o-Nator and tell you he gets a solid next start.

Mark Buehrle – 8 IP, 2 ER, 8 baserunners, 5 Ks, lowering his ERA to 2.50.  I look forward to Joe Buck saying in the All-Star Game, “Buehrle has been great this year, but he just didn’t have his best stuff today against these NL hitters.”

Jose Bautista – Pinch hit yesterday, and hopes to return to the starting lineup on Tuesday.  By not placing him on the DL, it saved about four days.  Yay, team decisions.

Jake McGee – Got his third save on Saturday, and back-to-back saves.  If you’re looking for Rays saves, I wouldn’t look much further than McGee until Maddon uses someone else to save games.

Matt Joyce – 5-for-6, 3 runs, 4 RBIs and two homers as he hit third in the Jigga what, rejiggered Rays lineup.  I’m going to keep harping on this, like I’m a monkey-fighting angel on a monkey-fighting harp, but has there ever been a situation where the three-hole guy is platooned?  Joyce isn’t even an everyday player.

Ben Zobrist – 3-for-6, 2 runs, 2 RBIs.  The Rays exploded for all kinds of homers yesterday.  Basically, everyone in their lineup homered, except Longoria.

Kevin Kiermaier – 2-for-5 and his 6th homer, and 2nd homer in as many games.  Little hot schmotato action here, and he could be batting third in the Rays lineup next game or could be out of the lineup.  Hard to say like Marc Rzepczynski.

Manny Machado – 1-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 2nd homer in as many games, hitting near-.350 in the last week.  Looks like he’s starting to come out of his season-long slump.  Too bad Showalter is punishing him by batting him 7th.  Guess Machado shouldn’t have asked Buck if he was going to see Torre inducted into the Hall of Fame.  Sore point!

Logan Forsythe – 2-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 2nd homer and 2nd homer (stutterer!) in as many games.  Forsythe is hitting near-.450 in the last week, and has some speed (that he hasn’t shown yet).  If you’re in a deep league, I’d look at Forsythe for a hot bat.

Nick Markakis – 2-for-4, 2 runs and his 4th steal, and homered on Saturday while hitting near-.350 in the last week.  It was announced Markakis is the 8th player in the franchise’s history with nine or more seasons of 100 hits.  That’s the Elliot Smith of baseball records.  Just sad.  Almost as impressive as the list of players with at least 400 at-bats in nine seasons.  Oh, wait, it’s the same record.

Robinson Chirinos – 3-for-3 and his 7th homer.  At least one Robinson is hitting for power this year.  I’m farting in your general direction, Cano.

Kyle Gibson – 8 IP, 2 ER, 8 baserunners, 3 Ks.  Since he has a 4.84 K-rate and that is the worst K-rate I remember ever seeing in my life, I’m gonna say you should pass on him.

Kole Calhoun – 2-for-5, 2 runs and his 7th homer.  Hitting close to .400 in the last week, near-.350 in June with 4 homers (3 homers in the last ten days).  So, you’ve heard all the accolades, and you’ve even Googled what the hell accolades are, so why are you not picking him up?  Afraid of success?  That’s what your relatives would say about you.  Prove your family wrong and get him!

Jason Grilli – 1/3 IP, and gave up the losing run.  He’s gonna fit in just fine!

Lorenzo Cain – 4-for-5, 2 RBIs.  Yo, MC Ren.  Tell him where you from!  Cain hasn’t stolen that many bases this year, the definition is jacking.  But he’s swinging a hot bat, and when illegally armed it’s called packing.

Aramis Ramirez – 0-for-1, 1 run and 2 steals.  This is the first time he’s stolen 2 bases in one game in his 17-year career.  Maybe he imagined he’s running from the Grim Reaper.  Always worked for Betty White.

Dallas Keuchel – Swollen wrist forced him to miss his Saturday start.  Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle said the Astros are hopeful he makes his next start, and he also said, “Of course my name is made up.  Jose de Jesus Ortiz is obviously a ploy to appeal to our Hispanic readers.”

Dexter Fowler – Missed three straight games with back stiffness.  Astros GM, Jeff Luhnow, said it’s precautionary.  I’d love to hear Busta Rhymes say Luhnow.  I’m getting paper….Jeff Luhnow!

Jose Altuve – 3-for-5, 1 run and 2 more steals (35, 36).  Will someone please lock Altuve in a locker for a week or two?  He’s giving Rudy too many steals.

Matt Dominguez – 3-for-4, 1 run.  Hey, it’s Matt Sunday on Sunday doing his Sunday thing!

Tony Sipp – 1 1/3 IP, 0 ER got his first major league save because Qualls had worked two days in a row.  Doesn’t Tony Sipp sound like a field goal kicker?  Is that what they’re called?  Wonky segue alert!  Jay’s starting to lay out his 2014 fantasy football rankings.  Go there, see that.

Max Scherzer – 7 IP, 2 ER, 8 baserunners, 13 Ks.  Did you know Scherzer is German for “sexy strikeout pitcher that challenges the elastic in Grey’s panties?”  Obviously Scherzer is much easier to fit on a driver’s license.

Drew Smyly – 2 1/3 IP, 4 ER vs. the Astros. Is there a middle finger emoticon?

Chris Owings – To the DL with a sore left shoulder.  Gregorius, who is very popular with his teammates and extremely social, will fill-in.

Odrisamer Despaigne – 6 2/3 IP, 1 ER, 9 baserunners (4 BBs), 2 Ks.  As long as he’s in Petco, I’d start him in any league.  On a side note, I would’ve loved to have been a fly on the wall when he was told he was being lifted for Quakenbush.  Or later that night when he tried to explain to his family that Quakenbush relieved him.  “¿Donde esta Quakenbush or que es Quakenbush?  Me no comprende a correct pregunta por el Quakenbush.  ¿¡Que or donde or quien es el Quakenbush?!”

Having to deal with all these closer by committees in fantasy baseball is about as tedious as being a member of your local town committee.

“Item 1 on the agenda this evening – the broken coffee maker. Unfortunately we don’t have the funds in the kitty to replace it so we’ll have to make the best of it. I suggest we bring our own flasks until the funds to get a…..zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.”

    • A Wesley Snipes Life says:
      (link)

@gareth: it’s not boring though, quite the opposite. it’s hair raising having crazy changes every other day and for those of us with move limits it really teaches the value of resource allocation. It’s also why i missed out on such wonderful player types as Puig last year (in move limit league). Closer hunting should be a required exercise in middle school home ec class; instead of those silly budgets they should be forced to field enough closers while still also being able to pick up replacements for injured people and prospects.

      • gareth says:
        (link)

        @A Wesley Snipes Life:

There are some people choose to punt saves because of the effort of it all.

I’m finding myself looking at guys like kevin jepsen, jake petricka, javy Guerra, Neil Ramirez, juan Carlos Oviedo, adam ottavino, Vic black, brad Ziegler – all for the sake of a possible scrap of SAGNOF.

        It is a Tedious business.

        • james says:
          (link)

          @gareth:

I have found that it has been boom or bust this season for me. i will literally have 1 closer this week, get sick of it, trade a bench bat for a guy like Chisek, and then all of the sudden find 5 recently appointed closer on my bench.

Example- At one point I only had Nathan closing games for me… realizing that he had no value with the terrible periferals, and realizing my bench hitters were insane but not playing, I traded for Chisek. (less than 2 weeks ago). Since then I have added Joe Smith and Casilla. So now i am overloaded with closers. My bet is that 2 lose the closing job in the next 2 weeks, and i am back to square one.

That is also a dynasty league, so when in doubt, find a bottom team, convince them (rightly) that closers are a terrible thing to build around in the future, and give them something decent for what they have (long term, there are maybe 3 closers i expect to be closers more than 2 years from now… and even that is risky. It was only 2-3 years ago when we all thought Broxton and Soria would be elite forever)

          • goodfold2 says:
            (link)

@james: this is true, but assuming you’ll simply get the next 2 annoited closers only works in leagues where you are by far the best at knowing about these things AND acting quickly. I’m assuming you in fact are (so am i in most leagues i’m in), but all it takes is 1 or2 other guys to catch on and it’s not so cut and dry as to who gets these next closers
Gareth: stick with petricka out of those now.

I happened to have the indians Post game radio show on in the background today. Some guy from Cleveland called in and made a demand to the host in a hilariously irrational tone “can you please stop calling him King Felix. His name is Felix Hernandez, not King Felix. He’s not some kind of deity. ”

Another guy called in and bemoaned the fact that “we never produce power hitters anymore” and lamented the fact that “the Indians let Richie Sexson get away.”

And I suddenly remembered why I never listen to the post game show on the radio.

    Grey et al!!!

You have really, REALLY outdone yourself with this article! Please store it for all posterity for alien lifeforms to view in the year 2525 (if man is still alive, if woman can survive).

So many things to discuss. Further on Taijuan WALKER. If he pitches well and remains in the black (it’s a financial term to indicate a positive return on your investment), he remains Taijuan. If he pitches poorly and goes in the red (it’s a financial term to indicate a negative return on your investment), then we will call him by his anagram Tijuana. Get it? It’s the same analogy as Correia – when he pitches well he’s North Korea and poorly (which is almost always, in fact I think he has a summer home in Pusan) then he is South Korea. So, good positive Taijuan and bad negative Tijuana. So there’s that.

You didn’t mention Cobb vulturing the win after his teammates manhandled the Os for a nice 7 spot in the top of the 6th. I started him for his two-start last week and was informed that, as in life, there are no guarantees and everything is a crap shoot. Little did I know that Cobb would take this advice on life as it happens literally and crap the bed twice in one week. I thought he fixed his mechanical flaw while i sonofabenched him?

On advice, I have the good fortune of still having Wright on my roster. First off, could you please send a ‘Hail Mary’ to the FBO and ask him if he will please kindly remove Wright from the undroppable list. I dropped Keuchel (too much wrist action after watching too much Holly Halston, Noelle Eastman, Penny Porsche and everyone’s favorite Allison Tyler) to pick up Josh Harrison. Zimmerman and Prado are also both available. Do you think I should hold Harrison or drop him for Zimmerman or Prado.

with casilla i just got done stashing 6 closers (casilla/papelbon/perkins/soria/melancon/nathan). some of those i waivered, others i drafted. problem is i now only have clippard getting holds. also only have room for 6 total RP so one of those closers will be benched everyday. good news is i should be able to trade 2 of these guys. esp to Romo owner (one would think). this is holds/net saves 12 team roto. any of these deals sound fair for both sides, if so what is best order to attempt
    1. my casilla/2nd closer for hammel
    2. my casilla/2nd closer/lind for arenado/betances
    3. my casilla/2nd closer for different top notch holds guy (wil smith for instance) from non-romo owner
    4. casilla/2nd closer for arenado
    5. casilla/2nd closer (of my opp’s choice)/lind for hammel and arenado (this might be too much back)

  17. Hey, I’m asking questions on the Fall of Romo post from Rome!

All these questions are for a deep (14-team) redraft roto league. The biggest offensive need is power.

I grabbed Calhoun today for the Batty Call and, as you mention here, he looks pretty good and I’m tempted to hold onto him. Don’t think I need 5 OF, though, with just 3 OF slots and one UTIL that rotates between the extra OF (Bautistia, McCutch, Melky, Khris D) and my extra 1B (Rizzo, Cron). I shouldn’t drop any of the above to keep Calhoun, right? (biggest hitting need is power).

Also, are you stating to get worried about Cobb? Think he may be hurt or getting worn out? He’s @DET next. He’s facing Smyly, but that probably still means a seat on the bench.

    Thanks!

@Enrique: Hello in Rome! Cobb will be okay, I’m not worried… You have no one to drop for Calhoun

      (link)

@bossmanjunior: How did that trade go you have 2 fors in there.

      • @Toe Knee Arm Ass: I think he meant he traded Melancon for Minor and, separately, Fister for Kipnis.

        • @Enrique: I like Fister and Minor has been awful lately and I think he has a bad elbow…Paging Doctor Jimmy & Mister Jim..

        • @Enrique: I guess it depends on needs, but I’d rather have Melancon and Fister. But I guess if the team is rolling in saves and needs help at 2B it would make sense.

Need a pitcher….His Arrieta for my Springer?

    • @C.O.C: I think you can aim higher with Springer. Find a team in need of HR and target its No. 2 starter.

      • goodfold2 says:
        (link)

@Enrique: pretty sure arrieta has been most teams (esp razzball with it’s non-high round pitcher strategy) #1 as of late. and i say late meaning over a month.

Bid $15 on McGee yesterday in NFBC, he went for $93, I’ll take Casilla as a $12 consolation prize thank you very much. Same deal with Harrison, who I picked up weeks ago in my other 14 tm daily ESPN league thanks to his kama-schmotraness, who went for $193 to my $15. Brad Miller welcome back to my team after a 2-month forced hiatus for $14! Chris Owings, it’s been real homes and you’ll get an imaginary playoff share if I finish in the money, but I wasn’t holding onto you for 2 weeks like you were 2008 Utley for my MI spot.

Since I’m paying big $$$ for 12 tm league, what’s 10 minutes to go all nerd and make a spreadsheet of teams IP and K to figure out K/9 and whether I can get away with starting 4 closers next week after I went 8 starters and 1 closer last week. I’m 8th in IP, but 4th in Ks, and 1st in ERA with 3.19 to the 2nd place teams 3.29 (which is also the leagues 1st place overall team thanks to way better luck in wins category and 22 more saves than me but he’s lost Romo for now left with Kimbrel and Cishek). The 1st place team in Ks has 65 more Ks than me in 107 more IP. Next week my definite starts for my 9 P spots are:

    Strasburg vs. Rockies
    Samardzija at Nats
    Sale vs. Mariners
    Quintana vs. Mariners
    Gray vs. Jays
    Cody Allen

Archer is only 2-starter but his matchups are at Yankees, at Tigers. Even Colon’s meh start yesterday, he settled down like he always does and ended up with an acceptable WHIP, he has home start vs. Rangers. Simon has home start vs. Brewers. Both have been great for me but don’t do much in Ks on 1-start weeks I guess. Have Casilla, Qualls, and Rondon as closers. Rondon has managed to hold on barely to spot and Neil Ramirez didn’t get picked up this week by another team (he was one of my back-up bids dropping Frieri this week)…hope it stays that way. D’arnaud might be a pick-up for me next week depending on how Vogt acquits himself. Also crossing fingers for Holt to get MI eligibility like Farrell claims.

Anyways, back to subject, which 3 pitchers listed in above paragraph do you think I should start for last 3 spots next week?

    • Symptom of the Universe says:
      (link)

      @Symptom of the Universe:

In my 14 tm ESPN weekly H2H categories league with daily lineups OBP and TB, I was offered Adrian Gonzalez for Chuck Santana. I declined immediately, but I then countered with sending him Santana, Bautista, and Polanco for Miggy and his 1B/3B eligibility, Cuddy (only 3 games away 3B and 7 from 1B eligibility), and Gerardo Parra (I’d dump him right away for Suarez or Stephen Vogt). Billy Hamilton would remain my only player that isn’t multi-position eligible, but between him and DeeG there’s been only 1 week I’ve lost steals category. I’m in 2nd place but have more W than 1st place team, he has more ties. Team I’m trading with has V-Mart, but unless someone tells me otherwise I doubt he gains catcher eligilibity. Think I’m giving up too much or should pull trade back or try doing something more modest to acquire V-Mart.

      Batters are:

      C, 1B Mauer
      C, 1B, 3B Santana
      1B, OF Duda
      2B, 3B Carpenter
      3B, SS Boegarts
      SS, 2B DeeG
      OF Billy Hamilton
      OF Joey Bats
      OF Gregory Polanco
      3B, 1B Chisenhall
      OF, 1B, 2B, 3B Kelly Johnson
      3B, 1B, 2B Callaspo
2B, 3B, OF Josh Harrison (8 more games at SS needed)
2B, 3B, SS Mike Aviles (he has 9 games at LF and 1 at CF dunno why ESPN hasn’t given him OF eligibility yet?)

DL-Wil Myers OF, Justin Turner 3B (2 more games for 2B, 4 more for SS)

Bad phrasing on me part, which 3 would you sit for next week out of Simon, Colon, Archer (2 starts at Yanks, at Tigers), Qualls, Rondon, Casilla if I’m trying to catch up in saves but not lose too much ground in Ks?

I’m hanging on for dear life in my 12-team H2H points league…

    C – Mesoraco; 1b – Freeman; 2b – Gennett; 3b – waiver-flavor-of-the-week (this week’s special: David Freese); ss – Segura; MI – Hardy; CI – Rizzo; Of – Bautista, Puig, Heyward, Hamilton, Pearce; UT – Hosmer

SP – Felix, Hamels, Greinke, Ventura, Wood, Morton, Arrieta, Roark, Elias
    RP – Jansen, Street, Melancon
    DL – Holland

So I’ve been offered Prado & Hammel for Hamels…

The trade would help fill the giant need I have at 3b (or even at 2b) but, Hamels seems a little rich for Prado (who has been scuffling big time and is now hitting 7th in the order for Arizona).

If I reject the offer, I’d like to counter with something… to that end I’ve devised three options:
    1) Offer a lesser pitcher (Ventura or Wood, potentially), dropping Hammel out of the deal, if need be

    2) See if he’ll do Hamels for Beltre straight-up

    3) Try and get a better pitcher than Hammel back in the deal… (he’s got Fister, Teheran, Lohse, Buerhle, Kazmir, Keuchel, Hughes, and Guthrie) of those, I’d really love Teheran or Fister and would be willing to chip in another one of my pitchers to get one of them

Only other options out there would be KC Escobar or Aybar types, so I’m assuming I should hold?

On the DL: Harper, Cargo, Arenado and Santana (2 DL spots and 2 Bench spots)

Pitchers: Shields, Cobb, Gray, Kluber, Chavez, Keuchel, McHiugh, Beckett, Hughes, Smyly, Duffy, Odorizzi (2 start week for McHugh, Duffy, Kluber, Beckett and Shields)

Available SS: Miller, Suarez, Asdrubal, Hardy……Forsythe, Peralta, Jeter

    1) Which bat OR arm do I DROP to pickup an SS to replace Danny Santana?
    2) Which SS do I grab off the wire?

    Really appreciate the help!

    Morning folks,

My SP stinks this year because someone, let’s just use an alias for this person like, I don’t know, “Shay Gallnight,” told me that I shouldn’t pay for starters in my draft and there was plenty of depth at SP. Well, since Alex Cobb is the best SP I drafted, and since Salazaar and Masterson were my other “decent” SP draft picks, I have crap W and L roto points and not so good ERA and WHIP.

So, anywizzle, I need to improve things in a ROS kinda way. I just got myself Taijuan Walker and I am preparing myself for disappointment. Also available in my league are Stroman and McHugh. McHugh is going to get a poopy record because he’s on the Assblows and it’s easy for hitters to elevate a ball 4.5 feet above the head of his second baseman. Stroman is supposed to have rookie poopfests, but he’s looked really tempting and I like the bats he has behind him. Oh, and Pomeranz is out there, too.

Any thoughts on how I should proceed?

    • Wilsonian says:
      (link)

@SportiveTricks: I really like Stroman, but he can roofie the hell out of you, too. McHugh might be doing it with smoke and mirrors, but it’s hard to fault him with the results he has had. I’d go with those two for sure, but it depends on what you’re dropping for anyone. Pomeranz is also out for a bit with a broken hand, so I’d let him sit there for awhile unless you have the DL space.

      • SportiveTricks says:
        (link)

        @Cram It:

Uhhh. Yeah, dude, like I said, I got burnt on picks of Masterson and Salazaaaaaaaar, and Cobb has been enigmatic and/or injured so far.

Kluber and Keuchel have been available on waivers in my league, but the rest of your boys have not. Was really asking about Stroman and McHugh, anyway.

        @Wilsonian:
Thanks for the thoughts, man. I will have a DL spot open soon with Nolan Arenado resumes play and I am keeping it warm for Pomz. Thinking I’ll pick up Stroman at some point, but I am dead last in W and McHugh probably won’t help me as much as Stroman there (who does have some offense to bail him out of the occassional hiccup).

        • Cram It says:
          (link)

@SportiveTricks: Uhhhh, I didn’t pick all those guys off waivers. We’re not on the same page. Good luck.

    • Cram It says:
      (link)

@SportiveTricks: I didn’t pay for SP and my rotation is Teheran, Gray, Kluber, Cashner, Alex Wood, Keuchel so do better next time.

      • Crapshoot Kershaw says:
        (link)

@Cram It: you just picked different razzball favorites cram and you know it, in fact wood wasn’t even ranked highly here till during season. keuchel was waivered by absolutely everyone. You chose Teheran as your ace and likely got him around sameish spot as Cobb (ADP wise), Kluber was ranked higher here than ADP’s so you did probably have to “pay” to get him.

Should I do this trade? I give up Rendon and Papelbon to receive Bumgarner and Cishek. It’s a 12-team 5×5 roto and I’m leading the league in R, HR, and RBI and close to the top in SB and AVG, but really need help in starting pitching. I already have Cano at 2B and Donaldson at 3B so Rendon usually plays Util unless Donaldson has a bad matchup, then Rendon gets plugged in at 3B. I’m pretty loaded with options for my 2 Util spots (Marte, Springer, Polanco, Betts), so I can afford to lose Rendon if it helps me in pitching. My other closers are Doolittle and Britton.

Smurf pitching went from 3.02 on June 1 to 3.67 today…

Horrible SPs, some bullpen implosions from dudes I picked up for “ratio help” and bad SP decisions… formula for the ages. (Sat Colon vs. A’s, started vs. Pirates… shoulda known Colon would beat the A’s since the colon lies above the “A’s”)

Traded Morse and Eovaldi for Lohses and Duda, then accepted Papi for David Price. What do ya think? (I would not have made the first trade if I knew I was gonna get offered the 2nd deal, from a different team)

By the way, I think that’d be pretty awesome if Gilbert Gottfried introduced Affeldt at games. In fact, I might be more inclined to go to a game if I knew the 8th/9th inning schtick at MLB games was that all closers were announced by that lunatic…I can just see him now in his own little Gilbert Jet with his squinty-eyed, open mouthed likeness painted on the tail, flying around the country all day, every day just to yell at another awaiting group of fans! What if we didn’t know any better, and that’s just how life was? Hmmmm… *wavy dream lines*

“Hold on folks. The game will resume in just a few hours. Mr. Gottfried had to scream at everyone in Seattle a few minutes ago. He’ll be here to scream at you as soon as his plane touches down at JFK and they copter him over. Sorry for the delay. Please blame Grey.” Followed by a huge groan, like a rain delay had been announced…Almost every day, someone in the stands remarks to his friend, “There just HAS to be a better way to do this! Sheesh! Wanna go grab a hot dog?”

    SS- Crawford, Baez
OF- Stanton, Cespedes, Craig, Dickerson, Calhoun, Heyward, and Marte
SP- Iwakuma, Zimmermann, Verlander, Cobb, Cashner, Harvey, and Cosart
RP- Frieri, A. Miller, C. Martinez, J. Smith, and N. Ramirez

I am in a 14 man keeper league (We can keep one additional keeper (keep forever) per year after the fifth round- next year we will be up to six players) My league is a 6×6 (Standard plus OPS and Holds). Players taken before the fifth round this year are rentals (Miggy, Kinsler, Marte, Cespedes, Craig).

I have a team that is sitting in the middle of the pack and would like to make a push this year. Some teams are out of the running and would like to possibly pick up one of their rentals to improve my pitching (WHIP, ERA, and Wins).

    A) Who would you keep for next year?
    B) What would you offer for rentals- Greinke or Scherzer? (We can include draft picks)
    C) Is it worth picking up Bryant right now even if he isn’t called up until September? We don’t have NA spots available on the roster so he would just be sitting there.

    Thanks!!

I have Rizzo to take over at 1st and could put Edwin at third. Or I could put Rizzo at 1st and Pedro/Machado/Arenado at 3rd if I got Joey. Shallow league and I could pick up a number of hot bats to help fill the void in a 2-for-1 deal.

It is a 5 player keeper (1 franchise forever, 4 players for 2 years total).

I traded for Verlander a month ago thinking he could bounce back, or hit the DL and then bounce back when he came back. Neither has happened yet, obviously.

I am in a 12 team keeper league 6×6 category wins h2h, pitching categories are W, K, HR allowed, ERA, WHIP, and NSVH. My pitching staff includes: Chris Sale, Phil Hughes, Homer Bailey (a successfulish bounceback trade recipient), Jared Cosart (streaming), Dallas Keuchel, Andrew Heaney, Matt Harvey (in my DL slot), David Robertson, K-Rod, and Rafael Soriano. There are 5 SP and 3 RP slots each day. Most of my guys don’t have starts until later on this week and we have to have at least 30IP in the week. 14-tm weekly H2H, W, L and QS count, who’s the 1st drop out of Cole, Keuchel, McHugh and Bailey? ROS Player Rater says the Stros are easy calls but they’ve been great, especially taking peripherals into account.

Would you drop a 2nd of that group for a 2-start Porcello (vOAK, vTB), Alvarez (vPHI, @STL) or Locke (vARI, vPHI) this week? SON says Locke, but Alvarez’s steadiness is nice.

Good morning Grey, I start jonesing when I go a full day without reading your section of the razzball fishwrap…. OK down to business pick one starter- RYU @home vs CLE , STRAS @home vs COL , GRAY @home vs TOR. Seems like these guys are all due for a good game. Stras and Gray both looked like shit their last outings. RYU seems to have the best matchup.

JD Martinez or Springer for the week. J-Mart has been hot but gets 4 lefties. he’s only hitting .108 on the year against lefties

    Howdy grey! Love the posts!

Few questions to start the day, first I have Dallas keuchel as my RP since he’s eligible there, with my league being a weekly lock & if for some reason his wrist is acting up for his next start I’ll be in a squeeze, on the other side I’d hate to drop him he’s been solid for me, but if I did drop here are a few available who are eligible at RP; Josh tomlin, Danny Duffy, gausman, Brandon workman & Matt shoemaker

Next question, do you think Harper will be activated from DL today? If yes, who would you bench to make room for Harper on starting lineup; Michael Brantley, george springer or polanco?

Lastly; need one for this week: jake arrieta (@ Boston & @ Washington) or Matt latos (@ SD or vs brewers)

Thank you for all your advice glad I found razzball last year, you & everyone here at razz are very insightful! Keep up the wonderful work!

I was thinking time to cut a Hosmer I kept him this year over Rizzo (UGH) I was expecting more from him and he’s been absolutely awful, pretty much all season. 133. Cardinals to recall Oscar Taveras on Tuesday

Oscar Taveras will be recalled from Triple-A Memphis before Tuesday’s game against the Giants.
The announcement was made in a press release Monday. Taveras batted just .189/.225/.297 in an 11-game cup of coffee with the big club earlier this season, but he’s one of the top offensive prospects in baseball and is worth picking back up in fantasy leagues. The 22-year-old should get a good share of the playing time in right field, with the struggling Allen Craig spending more time on the bench.

    Good Afternoon Grey,

I don’t normally (hardly ever for that matter) like to trade hitting for pitching, but I just had this proposed to me:

12 team Keeper, $55 budget, OBP & QS league.

    My Billy Hamilton ($14) & Cespedes ($19) for His Buehrle ($14) & Scherzer ($26)

    My staff:
    Gio
    Grey
    Kazmir
    Haren
    Alex Wood
    Stroman
    Heaney
    Cain
    Taj Walker

I am deep in OF with: Cutch, A Jones, Joey Bats, Springer & Ozuna. If you think it’s a yes, then do you still agree if it leaves me with no bench bats and I am fielding 3 hurt players (Gattis, Pujols, Joey Bats) and a suspended Machado?

I suppose if I do the deal I can dump Haren and another pitcher to fill some batting holes (and hope Gattis goes on the DL).

    Thanks!!

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I’d take Scherzer if you need pitching… Trade’s simply fair…

Grey, what do you think about this deal? Dynasty league 12 team:
I trade Cutch and Chisenhall for Scherzer and Donaldson.

I countered with Cutch, Tehran and Chisenhall and a 3rd rounder (He is extremely high on him for some reason) for Scherzer and Braun and a 5th.

If he doesn’t take the counter should I just accept the original? Thanks

David Wright (shoulder) is not in the Mets’ starting lineup on Monday night versus the Braves.

Thanks for bringing Busta into the roundup. I hadn’t seen the dude in like 17 yrs, until last week with Chappelle. Short set, prob cuz Busta’s a little girthier and a lot older, but he’s still got it.

You haven’t had much to say about Kipnis lately, but he was just dropped in my 12-tm 6×6 (OPS) league. I’m set at 2B (Cano) & Util (Ortiz)–worth having Kipnis as a bench bat till he starts hitting and I can trade someone, or do you think he doesn’t recover his mojo this year?

Of course I probably won’t get him at #5 waiver, but that’s neither here nor there.

Donnell Rawlings for warmup, Chappelle for a decently long set of new material, intermission, DJ Premier doing Gang Starr and Nas cuts with an orchestra (kinda meh, but that may be colored by the fact that my Brooklyn-born buddy was loudly/drunkenly spitting every verse in my ear), Busta for about 15 mins, then Janelle Monae for a surprisingly long set.

Current pitchers to pick up: Happ-Tomlin- Worley- Feldman-Also I only have Mcgee as a closer right now, should I pick up Joe Smith and drop a starter?

    • Grey

      Grey says:

someone , earlier , alluded to pujols having
a golf-ball size growth on his groin due to poor lymph node drainage .
if this is true , and he’s just coming forward with it now ,
you can expect him to hit the DL .
the 1st order of business will be an ultra-sound … to test for blood clots .
then , at least a week for the swelling to go down .
    again ,
am not sure of the validity of the report .
just responding to an earlier comment .

    • Grey

      Grey says:

Oh, boy, it sounds like you’re familiar with golf ball sized groin protrusions…

  241. J-FOH says:

Raise your hand if you feel like a fool for not starting Arrieta

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I consider not starting him, but he’s been so good lately

      • J-FOH says:
        (link)

@Grey: he went un-streamed in the FCL and I thought about it but couldn’t pull the trigger. I hate how NL pitchers in AL ballparks have scarred me permanenly over the years. I f**king hate inter league play.

        • Abdoozy says:
          (link)

@J-FOH: don’t feel bad, I let @Grey talk me out of picking up Arrieta a couple of weeks ago, couldn’t find anyone to drop for him. I rationalized it with my overall policy of never trusting any Cubs player.

My option was to drop Heaney for him. I have since dropped Heaney, and don’t have Arrieta for his last two starts. I’m not blaming Grey, just my stoopid prejudices.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

I hate interleague too, agreed… It’s miserable for streaming… The Sox have been less than great this year, but that’s hindsight talking, if I didn’t own him, I wouldn’t have picked him up for that matchup…

          • J-FOH says:
            (link)

@Grey: stupid FCL gets all up in my head

Felt pretty smug after trading Tyson Ross for Sean Doolittle last week. And now I’ve got 2 BS and an ERA of 108 today to show for it.

Does someone have a puppy I can repeatedly dropkick?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      Ha

  251. Abdoozy says:
    (link)

As an A’s fan I was feeling really depressed about DooDoolittle’s meltdown. Then I checked the matchup in my $$$$ league and see that my opponent this week has him. Nothing like seeing a 108.00 ERA in the scoreboard to lift one’s spirits.

      Ha!

      • Abdoozy says:
        (link)

@Grey: I had a chance to pick up Doolittle before they decided to dump Johnson after he tripped over his johnson a few times.. I picked up Gregerson instead because I figured lefty closers are rare for a good reason…

I was sure it would just be a matter of time until they came to their senses.. didn’t think it would take this long…

  254. hankp says:
    (link)

Is it time to consider selling high on Frazier, or can this really keep up? I just got offered Gordon and my choice of Headley/Dominguez for Frazier and Viciedo in my deep 5×5 and I’m tempted to jump on it in hopes that Headley gets dealt to a more hitter friendly situation this month.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Headley could play in Coors and not be anything… Well, maybe in Coors… I’d want Frazier over Gordon

      • gareth says:
        (link)

@Carnac:you refering to the Hanley intentional walk? I was fine with it. With 2 outs I’d rather face Clint Robinson instead of Hanley Ramirez.

The issue is the Indians offense. They are really channeling the Major league movie with this “1 god damn hit” shit. Feel bad for kluber.

This year, if it wasn’t for Brantley and kluber (and Cody Allen to an extent) this team would be borderline unwatchable.

        • J-FOH says:
