Davis Not Laughing At ‘Up In Smoak’
Chris Davis was sent down as a tear rolls down Bill James’ cheek. Coming up to take his place, Justin Smoak. Back in June, Stephen took out his incisors, chewed up and spit out some Justin Smoak fantasy value. For those too lazy to go back and read that post, it says, “(Smoak) has a great swing because his hands move together with his body producing a short, solid swing with few holes (his plate coverage is great). His hips and hands rotate simultaneously which is where all that power comes from.” His hands move together with his body while his hips and hands rotate simultaneously? Okay, so Smoak’s a salsa dancer. Sexy! Last year, Justin Smoak was promoted through the minors with relative speed. Stopping off at Rookie Ball for a minute (not an Urban Dictionary minute, which is actually a long time), checked in at Double-A for 183 at-bats and a .328/.449/.481 line then took a prolonged dump in Triple-A. The numbers there aren’t important; he was dealing with an oblique issue. It was a quick trip through the minors and Smoak might need some more Old Bay. We (you and I — hey!) could still expect a big impact. Think Chris Davis’s rookie year. Say 65/22/75/.265. So that’s 5 months of solid production. That’s Rookie of the Year numbers. Yes, please! Fin. Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
Psyche! Before we jump into the roundup, there’s announcement. Our fantasy baseball forums got a Bruce Jenner-like face lift. Thanks to Friend Of Razzball, Bob, for the work he did. Big ups! Anyway II, here’s the roundup:
Prince Fielder – 2-for-4, 3 RBIs as he finally hit his 1st HR. Nothing heals a sore hand like some Pirates pitching. Now only one homer behind Eugenio Velez!
Ryan Braun – 3 for 4, 3 Runs, 1 HR, 5 RBIs, 1 SB in a 20-0 laugher. If Randy Wolf got this type of support last year, he would’ve had 25 wins. Manny Parra would’ve had 7.
Octavio Dotel – 1 IP, 6 baserunners, 2 ER. Kazaam! There were two errors in the inning. The first error was bringing in Dotel.
J.A. Happ – Placed on the DL with soreness in his forearm. Guess J.A. stands for Jimmy Arm.
Justin Verlander – 5 IP, 4 ER, 10 baserunners, 4 Ks. He’s been terrible for the past three Aprils. Maybe when he was a kid he lost his kitten in April and it’s some repressed shizz. I don’t know. But practice patience, doc.
Jake Peavy – 4 1/3 IP, 7 ER, 14 baserunners. I hate to bring out the I told you so’s. But I told you so.
Jason Bartlett – 0-for-4 as the Rays scored ten runs. Ticker tease!
Daisuke Matsuzaka – Dice-K will return to the rotation and knock out Tim Wakefield. Don’t worry SAGNOF lovers, at least V-Mart is still behind the plate.
Clay Buchholz – 6 2/3 IP, 3 ER, 7 baserunners, 10 Ks. He has 16 2/3 IP and 18 Ks overall. He’s rocking a 2.70 ERA. Sure, his WHIP’s a little ugly, but why have I been getting comments asking if people should drop him? I don’t get this.
Jacoby Ellsbury – Has four broken ribs. If he put some of that Salt Lick spice rub on them and threw them in the smoker… Oh, those ribs. Yeah, this is pretty bad news. He might be out for a few weeks now. I wouldn’t try and buy low.
C.J. Wilson – 6 2/3 IP, 6 baserunners, 0 ER, 2 Ks, now has a 1.37 ERA on the year. Member all those days when he was blowing saves in Texas? Yeah, they should’ve been bringing him in the 1st.
Darren Oliver – 1 2/3 IP as he recorded the save. The Rangers have no idea what to do with their bullpen. When Wilson moved into the rotation, a setup man void was created. Now when their closer stunk up the joint, spraying his scent all over the field, they had a “Lucy, I’m home” uh-oh moment. They turned to their uber-nasty, Neftali Feliz (nasty as in good, not nasty as in bad). The problem there: Feliz can’t pitch too many innings in a row. Which brings us back to Cousin Oliver. I’d own Feliz and hold Frank-Frank. I’m not jumping in bed with a third Ranger closer.
Ike Davis – 3-for-4, 2 Runs. He’ll be in this afternoon’s Buy/Sell. No, he won’t. Don’t start with that, random italicized voice.
Ubaldo Jimenez – 7 1/3 IP, 0 ER, 7 baserunners, 5 Ks. Johnny Vander Meer’s family can stop following him around now.
Miguel Olivo – 2-for-3 and his third homer. Iannetta was overheard on the phone receiving words of encouragement from Napoli.
Willie Harris – Hit third in the order. When pundits say “America has lost faith in Washington,” this is why.
Derek Lowe – 5 IP, 4 ER, 8 baserunners, 3 Ks. Said this in the preseason, still saying it. Wouldn’t own Lowe anywhere.
Carlos Guillen – Left the game with a hamstring injury. He’s headed to the DL. Too bad, so sad.
Manny Ramirez – Left the game after reaggravating his calf strain. His “doctor” gave him some “fertility” medicine, but Selig and his “rules.” Now Manny has an aggravated calf strain and impotency.
Chris Perez – Managed a scoreless inning! Hurray. It was 8-1. Ho-hum. Unless your league credits KKB SV (King Kong Bundy Saves).
Rajai Davis – With his 8th SB and 13th Run against the Yanks, owners hoping for 2-stat production have to be giddy for the love of Rajai. With his low AVG (.220), OBP (< .300), and 1 HR, anyone hoping for more will be as sorely disappointed as anyone who watched Ray Jay’s famous video.
Ray Liotta – Hosting a 5-part series on MLB Network. Each episode starts with him saying: As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a narrator.

I was going to add some more scouting information on Smoak for the Rangers Minor League Review for next Wednesday. Guess that’s what I get for working ahead. Either way, Smoak has a lot to live up to. I really hope he can produce like Braun, or I am going to start questioning Baseball America’s optimism.

New Razzball glossary suggestion: “Sharting Pitcher.” A starting pitcher who gives you a satisfying number of Ks (ah, the heat…), but at the same time craps all over your ERA and/or WHIP. Example: Haren’s win this week. 6IP, 8K, 10.50 ERA.

Yesterday, I asked about Aroldis and Smoak. I read a Rob Neyer article about Smoak coming within 2 weeks and got anxious. Then I picked up Aroldis because I saw Leake give up 5 runs.
Glad I work at 5:00am. And glad I read Razzball at work… because Leake is still there, and Smoak is getting in. Yea, that was clever. But seriously, thanks Grey. I need RBI’s and Smoak could really help.

This is a good morning. I own Wilson v. Buchholz, wasn’t happy bout the 3 spot but it gave me a win out of it, and the important thing was 10k:1bb. Looking like a pretty sexy draft pick now…
Rajai Davis was a terrible pick however, and I sorely need to replace him. Shame Ike or Smoak dont play OF, and I don’t have the depth to free up a 1b/CI spot. I might need to make a move to replace Davis, the wire is barren. In retrospect, should have dropped Rajai for Willingham, not Rios.
OF always seems like such a deep position, but I can’t find a single guy on the wire with upside. I guess that happens when you have 4OF and util.

[Reply]
April 23rd, 2010 at 6:11 am
@Martin: That is a good question. I have Maybin in my utility slot and considered Smoak. Grey’s projections have Maybin winning that battle. Maybin’s average, steals, and runs are projected higher, but Smoak will get you a few more HR and RBI. Someone just dropped Nyjer Morgan in my league, Grey, would you take him over both Maybin and Smoak.

Unlike Jason “Wonder Boy” Heyward, donking in his first AB and crushing our chances to be together forever.
@Hardcore Midget: When I left you, I was but a learner. Now I drop the Masterson.

Vazquez, Cueto, Gorzellany, Jon Niese, and I just dropped Felipe Paulino for Brett Cecil. I’ve got Dice-BB coming off the DL soon. I’m considering dropping Cueto as he’s pitching the worst of everyone on my squad. Do I actually do this? I’m sitting on several top prospects waiting for the June call ups, so I don’t have much roster flexibility.

I think you need a refund on Javi V. Beyond that, I would have zero expectations of Dice-BB right now. So maybe keep him at least until he pitches one more time…if he cant do it vs SD then its probably time to cut ties. In a 16 team league tho I think you gotta be careful unless plan B is clearly gonna improve the team. (Dice-BB aint)

@Baron Von Vulturewins: Someone actually dropped Bruce Almighty? Wish that would happen in my league.
@joey joe joe jr shabadoo: Yeah, Pelf has a splitter, which used to be called a forkball, for those as old as me. Initially used by Elroy Face, I believe, who was the original Sagnof; with an 18-1 record and 20 saves. Pelf is smokin’ – he leads the Mets in wins, and before yesterday, in saves.
Who wins in this trade: Uggla + Bay + Casey Blake for Cruz +McGahee?

@Baron Von Vulturewins: Baron, thanks for the advice.
I actually dropped Latos to pick up Smoak.
I have a pretty deep pitching staff as it is- Danks, Josh Johnson, Garza, Jered Weaver, Wade Davis, Wolf, Masterson and Garcia.
Plus, I have Cliff Lee coming back next week. Masterson might get the cut when I need a roster spot. But I like Masterson a lot for his K and ground ball potential.
Smoak would be a 5 year keeper for me in my league, so I liked him more than Latos. My league always seems to have decent spot starters available on the FA wire too.

OKKKKK? I love Kemp but after 3 weeks he’s a consensus #1 pick for 2011? Lets slow our roll. Lester is a slow starter but no mention of TEX being a slow starter? Put in a hole in H2H formats? Where are those won again? Someone remind me, oh i remember….. DURING THE PLAYOFFS.

Face was the first relief pitcher (didn’t call them closers in those days) who had 20 saves in back-to-back seasons, although saves were not a counted stat way back then. Scott was unhittable in the ’86 season, especially in the playoffs. Prolly was a spitter.
BTW, love your handle. Mordecai “3-fingers Brown mangled his hand in a corn shredder when he was nine. Then he had a bad fall, breaking three of his fingers. That proved to be serendipitous, as the mangled hand produced a wondrous curve.

@Tony: Agreed. I survey the various sites (THT, FP911, Savants, Geeks, Authority, ‘Graphs, Junkie) and I still do most of my shopping here. In addition to the great information, the comedy and the accessibility are key. Grey and Rudy could easily be charging for this service

@Ozzie: Super confused what either trade is.
@William: I’ve never liked Dice-K.
@penpen: That’s some kinds of awesome.

I’m a little on the fence with Johan Santana… he’s pitched great his last couple starts and I was thinking of trying to unload him now before he regresses or breaks down.
I’m in a 12-team keeper league, H2H. This is my first year in the league.. I inherited a dead-beat’s team. This year we kept 12, next year that is being cut to 6. Here is my team:
C – Mike Napoli
1B – Adrian Gonzalez
2B – Dustin Pedroia
SS – Jason Bartlett
3B – Kevin Youkillis
OF – Adam Lind
OF – Jayson Werth
OF – Chase Headley
UT – Ian Stewart
UT – Alex Rios
BN – Justin Smoak
BN – Jason Kubel
BN – Alcides Escobar
BN – Geovany Soto
BN – Johnny Damon
DL – Carlos Beltran
SP – Johan Santana
SP – Adam Wainwright
SP – Mat Latos
SP – Kevin Slowey
SP – James Shields
RP – Mariano Rivera
RP – Jonathan Broxton
RP – Heath Bell
DL – Chris Young
Scoring is as follows: Runs, RBI, Homeruns, SB, Average, Wins, Saves, K’s, ERA, WHIP
I grabbed Napoli when Mathis hit the DL and was hoping to flip him or Soto for something better. So far.. no dice. I’ve been trying to get Bruce and Rasmus, but the guy that owns both is standing pat.
Should I try to package Johan Santana with someone to get Jon Lester and Brett Anderson?
What if I try to package Johan for Votto and then try to package Wainwright for Lester and Anderson?
Obtaining Votto would really put me heavy at 1B though with Adrian Gonzalez, Smoak, and Youk all eligible.

@Grey: Standard league, who starts and who sits? I have three spots (2OF and U) for these five players: Headley(@Cin/Cueto), Damon (TEX/Feldman), Borbon (@DET/Scherzer), G. Sizemore (@OAK/Duchscherer), and Vlad(@DET/Scherzer)
I’m thinking my best lineup is:
C: Soto, Olivo
1B/3B/CI: Miggy, Youk, Pena
2B/SS/MI: MMD, Ass-Dribble, Kelly
OF: Kemp, Werth, Sizemore, Span, Headley
U: Vlad
BN: Damon, Borbon

There’s something about the spelling of Smoak that bothers me. Much like the surnames of Randy Choate and Dick Groat.

@ Grey: What are your thoughts about keeping Davis in a keeper league? What is his long-term value in the league(Roto league where OBP is one of the categories)? Would you drop him for someone like Will Venable?
[Reply]
@Curse of the Goat: I’d drop him.

@Grey: Thanks for the input. Since it’s a 14-team keeper league, I decided to take a flier on Pedro Alvarez. Does he remind you of anyone on a major league roster that could give me an idea of what to expect when he’s called up?

@Curse of the Goat: Aramis
