Wandy’s only consistent in how inconsistent he is. I had him last year on a team and he drove me crazy. I don’t think you can even trust him to be good in Houston and sit him in away games. I’d drop Wandy for Cueto. Cueto’s unknown is more alluring than Wandy’s known.

Do you think Wandy holds any value? I thought he could rack up some K's for me at the very least and put together a good overall year if he could learn to win on the road. Big deals usually don’t happen for a while and then who’s to say you’ll need that player that is dealt. You wait for Roberts then you don’t need him and you have to trade him for 50 cents on the dollar. I would just grab Cueto if you need him.

I am tempted to use my number 1 waiver on Cueto in our NL-only league, but I think I will hold on to it for when the first big AL to NL deal happens. Ya baby.

I actually don’t have a waiver claim in for Cueto in that league. I think it’s because I don’t have anyone to drop or it’s because my WW priority is so low. You dropping Wandy for Cueto? I’d do that.

Ugh, I dropped Bannister and his low K-rate late last night in favor for... Wandy Rodriguez. Needless to say I blew that one. I "had a bad feeling" about Bannister.. ha. Hey Grey, so should I pick up Cueto? I have #1 priority in our league and you just wrote the other day to "stop pussyfooting around and grab the player you want" in regards to using waiver claims. i downgrade shields and kazmir b/c they pitch in the AL East. i also downgrade kazmir b/c he’s an injury magnet.

garza pitched great in the minors through 2006 but had some humbling times the past year or so. he could prove to be better than cueto this year – i’d say it’s 50/50. so if you like garza, go for it. maybe he has a 4.00 ERA if you sit him against they yanks and sawx…

I said, they could be like last year’s Brewers but in the AL Central that means .500 and fourth place. Bannister could be Hudson or Penny, but those guys have shown it for a lot longer. Wainwright I like more. More Ks.

sorry ’bout that grey… the KC/Brewer comparison has stuck in my head since I read it back when…very provocative indeed (just like the “drop bush” comment), but KC is still lacking a few offensive pieces compared to last year’s Brew Crew…anywho, I think Bannister this year could be very comparable to some of the modest stikeout guys you have recommended like Hudson, Penny, Wainwright etc. and he still may be a free agent in some leagues…

Actually I think Bannister could be a shrewd early season pick up…I looked at him very closely before opting for Parra and Villanueva for my bench (soon to be augmented hopefully by J. Cueto — see how this tangled web is weaved?). Granted, Bannister’s K’s were not close to elite last year but his strikeout ratio was up this spring and his ERA and WHIP could be elite. Also I think he will win more games than you think this year. KC has three solid starters in Meche, Greinke and Bannister, an up and coming closer in Soria and stars in the making in Gordon and Butler. They also have another starter in the minors (I forget his name) who is projecting to be a big-time player. I don’t think they are the Brewers of last year as some have said, but it’s a good young team.

Yeah, I love is potential too but I just can’t have 4.50, 1.40 in my Yahoo line-up. BTW, do you not take Shields and Kazmir because the pitch against NY and Bos constantly? It’s true that Lincecum, Hill, Gallardo had some value out of the box, but I almost think you’re better off streaming starters against the Giants then taking a chance with Cueto. Of course, I’m the guy who’s got Butler, Milledge, and McLouth on almost every team. BTW, I did pick up Melky as a bench player on one of my teams as a salute to you, Rudy.

The projections for Cueto do not look pretty. ERA in the 4.50-5.00 range, a WHIP in the 1.40 range, and an above average K rate (near 7 per 9 IP).

Based on these projections, he doesn’t warrant consideration in even a 12-team mixed league format.

But I like him anyway – mainly because he was DOMINANT in the minors last year. BaseballHQ has a score called BPV that aims to rank players based on skills vs. stats. Cueto’s minor league performance was off the charts and every guy who was near him performed pretty well in his rookie year – Gallardo, Hughes, Corpas, Rich Hill. As last year wore on and he went from single-A to triple-A, his K/BB ratio kept climbing (77/11 in AA and 21/2 in AAA).

Would I rank him above Garza, Arroyo, or Maddux? Yeah, b/c you won’t find Cueto’s upside that often on FA/Waivers where Arroyo and Maddux types will be there all year. I’m less scared about him pitching in Cincy than I am about Garza pitching against NYY and BOS…

So I think he’s tied for #1 pitching rookie with Parra on Milwaukee. Worthy of a waiver claim. I wouldn’t trade much to get him, though, given the risk…

How valuable do you think Cueto will really be? A rookie pitcher in a hitter’s park. Basically, around which other SP’s do you rank him. Is he a better bet than other waiver wire guys like Bronson Arroyo or Greg Maddux. Matt Garza is on many waiver wires. What about him? I just think that in most cases, picking up a rookie sensation is usually a year early. You usually don’t get an ERA under 4 or a whip under 1.3. Thoughts?
