Yes had a very odd and underrated music career.  For years they were this prog rock band that never quite broke out.  Sure, people knew of them.  They had an abbreviated version of their single Roundabout peak on the billboards at 13 back in 1971 and then their album Close To The Edge broke things wide open for them at #3 in the US billboard charts and #4 in the UK.  The future was bright for a band that would go on and become an influence for such acts as Rush, Dream Theatre and even Tool and Mastodon.  But then the following album disintegrated any good will they had with their fans.  That’s what happens when you put out a pompous sounding album like Tales From Topographic Oceans.  Not quite as bad as Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavored Water – thank you for going away quietly, Limp Bizkit – but it was clear that commercial success was no longer something that was gonna happen for these guys.  Or was it?  I give you this long and – unless you’re a Yes fan – boring intro to draw parallels to James Loney and his career to date.  Ok, I’m stretching things more than Dhalsim here but bear with me, we’re getting to it.  What we are currently witnessing in Tampa Bay could be Loney’s out of nowhere hit after a promising start to his career that went flat, then down, then seemingly out.  See?  See what I did there?  Continuity!  So tease your metal hair out with some Aqua Net while we tell you why you should be an owner of a Loney start for week six of the 2013 fantasy baseball season…

You’d probably know more about Loney if he didn’t start off so cold this year.  By April 16th, James owned a .167 average and looked like he’d probably start losing playing time once Luke Scott came back.  But we know how these Tampa Bay resurrection stories go.  We’ve seen it before, and as recently as Jeff Keppinger in 2012 when he batted .325 and Casey Kotchman when he batted .306 in 2011.  Well, despite that cold start for Loney, he’s now up to .360 as of Saturday morning.  Think about that for a second.  He’s raised his average over .200 points since mid-April, i.e. since about 3 weeks ago.  All this to say, Loney isn’t struggling with the bat right now and he’s got a good slate ahead of him this week to keep that rolling.  What’s so good about it, you ask?  Well, how about getting to face two teams with ERAs in the bottom ten of the league?  Currently, Toronto has a 4.63 team ERA and is being closely chased by the Padres and their 4.53 in a battle for non-supremacy.  Those stats are good for 3rd and 4th to last, respectively, and probably won’t see any change to that anytime soon given the Blow Jays will probably have to start Ricky Romero for the near future and the Padres ‘ace’ coming into the year was Edinson Volquez.  Yikes…anywho, I suggest this start for anyone struggling through a player like Ike Davis at their 1B position.  James Loney won’t bring you power but he hits in a decent RBI slot most nights and won’t tank your BA like Ike has been doing.  So go throw on that 90125 album and crank it up for a week and relive that hit single while James Loney hits singles for you.  See?  I did it again!

          Sky says:
          (link)

@Dave the Barber: So in saying that are you telling me you would no longer have someone at the MI position? Not sure how this changes the argument.

          • Dave the Barber says:
            (link)

@Sky: No I would have a back up to throw in there (Espinosa) but the thing that changes the argument is the value of having a MI spot in a 14 team league in comparison to a 10 or 12 team league. We have a SS/2B/MI so that is three positions we must fill from a talent depleted position, especially when it is spread out over 14 teams. Rutledge is the 7th ranked SS in my league per the ESPN player rater so I feel like the value of a MI in my league (even more so considering how well Rutledge is playing) commands more value than Wieters. What do you think?

Pretty appropriate to talk about wacky prog in connection with “Weird Game” James. In between innings at Dodger Stadium a few years back they would play videos of Dodgers answering single questions, one of which was, “Who’s the funniest guy on the team?” Many answered Loney, and one player–I can’t recall who–detailed that Loney was funny but had no idea that he was being funny, he was just a kooky guy.

Anyhow, I wish “Weird Game” all the best, but although he’s been hitting well, he’s pretty much empty average. (His BABIP is insanely high, but it’s supported by a crazy 35% LD rate). The Dodgers always hoped that his ISO would remain around .200, as it was in 2007, but it has declined considerably since then, and although it is up to .152 this year, he only has 1 HR.

One of the remarkable things about his HRs is that he’s only ever hit 4 to the opposite field and 2 of those came in 2006…It could be that pitchers corrected after noticing this in 2007. Seems strange for a line drive hitter like “Weird Game”…

    Also, a meditation on mortality:

Interesting about ‘Weird Game’. TB seems to love collecting eccentric players. See, you’re only crazy if you’re poor…

James is totally a needs play but 2/4 with an RBI is better than 0/3 with a walk and 2 K from (insert struggling player in your lineup here). The fact the opposing teams don’t look formidable for the week makes it look like a reasonable go for him.

Ha about the Big Unit. As you know, M’s fan here. Still remember John Kruk facing him in the All-Star game in ’93. He’ll put the fear of Yahweh in ya for sure.

Crawford is the 6th best SS according to my league and I’m in a 6×6 … I wouldn’t drop him for Dee because you have plenty of speed in your OF (I’m assuming Elsebury and Cain are stealing bases) and Dee is gonna kill your counting stats.

Wouldn’t normally consider Perez, except he’s behind Santana and Posey. I’ve got no 1B, but both have eligibility, so they’re playing C and 1B. Haven’t been able to flip either catcher for a 1B upgrade yet.

morning brotha!!! I’m trying to make a trade proposal to a guy in my league.I’m interested in Granderson, Burnett and Felix Hernandez. Not all of them at once but trying to make some kind of move. Anyway this is my lineup in a 10 team H2H points league and a win in pitching is 20 points + a point each for innings n K’s…
    matt wieters
    fielder
    altuve
    starlin castro
    Zimmerman
    Justin Upton
    MCcutchen
    Matt Holliday
    Carl Crawford
    Ethier
    Donaldson
    Jose Reyes DL
Pitching – Mat Latos, Samardzija, Hammel, Matt Cain, Corbin, Iwakuma, Shelby Miller, Dempster, and Cahill.. RP’s – Jim Henderson, Mujica and Jansen
So far I was gonna offer Ethier n Samardzija for Granderson or MCcutchen n Samardzija for Hernandez. Don’t know if I’m getting the better end of that but what kinda trades should I offer him??? Oh also I was gonna give him a player or 2 for Burnett n Granderson

    • Sky

      Sky says:

  22. Frank Lynch says:
    (link)

K thanks buddy.. What about Granderson.. worth a try? Do you still want me to do the Ethier for Cain? Sorry one more thing. Donaldson has been real hot. You still think Lowrie is better long term or something??

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

I don’t see a reason for you to trade for Grandy given your team, just pick up Cain.

Donaldson is just ok in the long run but your league is shallow. Just ride the hot bat.

      • Frank Lynch says:
        (link)

Awesome.. thanks again.. Oh I noticed that Halladay is on waivers. Is he worth the pickup for someone like Jansen?

          (link)

Ha, Frank you already asked me about him! No, you don’t want Halladay. He’s old and on the DL. There’s zero reason for you to be picking him up.

  23. Frank Lynch says:
    (link)

HAHA, my bad I forgot it was you. I sometimes ask the same question to a couple guys to get different opinions and in case someone aint around but I respect You n Grey’s opinion a lot.. You see what Sanchez said “I garauntee that I’m going to be the starter this year!” Hey maybe if he plays like the first 2 years.. Lol. They got 2 guards n A great RB so it should be easier for whoever the starter is

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

Yeah, stability at QB will be key for the Jets this year. San Fran went 13-3 with Alex Smith so having a boring QB works fine for the team. Sanchez just needs to learn how to be boring, i.e. fewer turnovers.

      • Frank Lynch says:

  25. Frank Lynch says:

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

      @Frank Lynch:

      R.A. Dickey: 5.36 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP & Melky Cabrera: .258 average with 1 HR and 2 SB

      FOR

Jeff Samardzija: 3.09 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP & Carl Crawford: .308 average with 5 HRs and 6 SB

Why would you do this trade? I understand it’s your first year but you have to look at the trade and actually analyze it a little bit. That trade makes zero sense for you and 100% sense for the other guy…

      • Frank Lynch says:
        (link)

Yeah I was actually just looking at that but I thought last years CY Young would turn it around.. Hey when I picked up Cain 2 weeks ago I took that chance too.. Youer right though I guess I just see the popular names and automaticly think it’s good. Maybe Cueto but I would have to change my guys

        • Sky

          Sky says:
          (link)

I’d strongly encourage taking a look at what you have a bit. You seem really anxious to make trades and I don’t understand why. Samardzija is on pace for 263 K; that stuff doesn’t come along very often. I’m sure Dickey can turn it around but Samardzija was a sleeper coming into the season and is living up to his potential. BTW, Samardzija had a solid year last year as well and has improved on his numbers but he seems to be the first guy you want to sell. I don’t understand that at all.

Cain wasn’t a chance, IMHO; all the underlying stats said he’d turn it around. He just had a rough start to the year which plenty of good pitchers have done in the past; the fact it happens at the first of the year just gets people worried.

In the end, it just seems like you wanna trade guys who are actually doing well for guys that are doing terrible. I get trying to buy low/sell high but a lot of the trades like the ones above are you selling yourself short for guys with no sure sign that they’re going to improve vastly enough to make the trade remotely in your favor.

          • Frank Lynch says:
            (link)

Thanks for telling it straight.. I think samardzija is great and that was my selling point cause even when he loses, after the minus 10 i still get points.. On the other tip I just get frustrated cause my team is insane i think and I’m 1-3 but everytime i lose, the team i play get the best week out if the league that week but it don’t matter cause it’s still a lose and my hitting never gets it together at the same time.

@Frank Lynch: Yeah, that’s the glory of H2H, though. I’ve been on both sides of that where I shouldn’t be winning and am and then getting the best week ever from everyone else and losing when I shouldn’t. It’s the name of the game but really, we’re only a little over a month into the season. Stay away from the panic button :)

  26. Frank Lynch says:

Yeah and i always panic way too early.. It’s a10 team league and 6 make the playoffs. Your right cause I’m always looking for RIGHT NOW instead of throughout

  27. Frank Lynch says:
    (link)

Morning buddy… This is what I sent to Grey. This guy in my league sent me a trade proposal and wanted Samardzija n Crawford from me for Dickey n Melky Cabrera. I was talking to Sky and he told me #1 not to do it and #2 stop looking for a pitcher and I totally agreed with him but before I reject it, Do you think I should counter the trade and give him the same people for Johnny Cueto?? I don’t want you to think that I didn’t listen to you so no disrespect, Please! I just want to know If you n him like the trade if he agreed to Cueto instead. I’m not looking for more pitchers, just wanted to throw this one out. What u think?

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

No disrespect taken but: If we established you’re no longer looking for pitchers and you agreed you understood why you’re not looking for more pitchers…then why are you swapping Cueto into the same bad trade and wondering if it’s a good idea? Sorry man, still don’t understand your angle here. Makes zero sense.

      • Frank Lynch says:
        (link)

Well I didn’t send the trade but there’s no reason why I can’t try to grab Cueto cause he’s an ace right? Idk.. My batting is crazy good and Samardzija’s not winning. Not cause bad pitching all the time cause he pitches good but to keep a guy that pitches for a team that can’t get him a run or two for the life of them. How do you feel about good pitchers on bad teams? I have him then I got 2 pitchers from Arizona, Corbin n Cahill. I figure it might not be a good trade but for me as my squad is set up I think losing Samardzija n Crawford wouldn’t be so bad. Especially for a guy like Cueto.. What u think?

        • Frank Lynch says:
          (link)

Oh also, A week or so I picked up Kenley Jansen. I always see O’Flaherty on the wire and he’s got the most fantasy points out of all the other RP’s + he’s on the Brave’s… Should I drop Jansen for him??

          • Sky

            Sky says:

          Sky says:
          (link)

Dude, Samardzija is an ace and you wanna overpay for Cueto. I don’t get what you’re trying to accomplish here. You’re win chasing and that’s a pointless endeavor and I’ve said that multiple times. Pursue and keep good pitchers and stop worrying about wins. I’d think you could easily stream for wins if that’s your concern if you’re in a 10 team.

  28. Frank Lynch says:
    (link)

Sorry no more about pitching I’m gonna listen to you 100%.. That’s why I come on here. Not to negotiate! LOL. Hey I have 12 pitchers 4 bench spots but of course I never have to bench a starter but I have only 1 bench spot for hitters. Usually it’s not a problem but this week I had a lot of guys not playing. Do you think I should grab another batter like Lowrie, Moreland or Scutaro or someone like that? The reason I only mention scutaro is cause he’s HOT right now and the best thing is he plays 3 positions..

    • Frank Lynch says:
      (link)

Oh i’m gonna post this on Grey’s cause I don’t know if your even checking this anymore cause it’s in the archives and your usually on his page

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

Nah man, I don’t mind you asking an opinion and disagreeing. But you said you were new to the game so I’m trying to not just give you ‘yes/no’ answers so that you start building a bit of a knowledge base on how to play the game. But when you ask basically the same question 4 times in a row, I question whether or not you’re actually analyzing what’s being said. That’s all.
