Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Hello one, hello all it is your gracious and well manscaped travel agent, Sky.  I promise I’ll do my best to accommodate all your traveling needs and not relive my past years’ glory while I do it.  Truthfully, I don’t have two tickets to paradise for you this week.  Heck, I don’t even have a 7-day vacation package ready for you like you asked for.  We didn’t ask for anything.  Who are you and why are you talking to me?  I already told you I was Sky, silly, and I’ve been writing over on the Razzball Fantasy Football side for ages.  And by ‘ages’ I mean since last year but in the internet world that’s practically like running a family car wash for 50 years.  Grey asked me to come over here and give the worst advice possible a while back so he looks better but I decided y’all are too good for that and have suggested guys like Eric Chavez, Brandon Moss and Adam Lind to you in the past.  But this week was stickier than those little buns you like…um, I’m talking about sticky buns guys…where were YOU going with that?  But enough about how you sticky your buns, I’m here to talk about Danny Valencia and more importantly why he’s a good get for week 14 of the 2013 fantasy baseball season…

So there are some things you need to know about Danny before we proceed.  First things first, his last name is the third largest city in Spain behind Barcelona and Madrid.  Don’t lie, you didn’t know that and neither did I until I Googled it.  But now you get why I’m trying to book your fare for this week on this scenic excursion into fantasy baseball dominance.  The second thing you need to know about Valencia are his splits.  They’re terrible.  He’ll never win a floor routine with them and McKayla Maroney is not impressed.  But more importantly, his lefty/righty splits.  Danny don’t like no righties as – even though he has 3 HRs and a .545 slugging percentage off of them – he is only hitting .136 off them over 22 ABs this season and only carries a .229/.269/.360 slashline against them for his career.  And that’s how you get DFA’ed by the Twins so they can start a little man named Plouffe, people.  But of course, that’s not what makes him a creeper for this week, so let’s get to the juicy side of the story.  The left hand side, that is.  For his career, Valencia has a .315/.358/.479 line against LHP and 9 HRs in 336 career ABs.  I know, not amazing, but given the offense he gets to hit with – Baltimore is the second highest scoring team in the Major Leagues this year – there’s a reasonable shot at a HR and a few RBIs and Runs from a guy who’s 0% owned in ESPN leagues.  Toss in that 4 of the 6 Baltimore games this week have LHP and Danny looks like a great vacation from, say, Todd Frazier.  But of course I get paid in commission for your buy in so if the needle doesn’t point to 1% ownership next week, I’ll have you know my family will go hungry and you’re to blame.

Jacob Turner or Corey Kluber ROS?? I only have 15 moves left for season, wanna make every move count. My league counts L/K/QS/ERA/WHIP/SV. Thanks!

  3. Yager says:

Is that to say you would rather have Valencia over Frazier ROS. I also have Rendon to spell Valencia when he sits. Question: Is Frazier droppable for Valencia with Rendon on the squad?

    • Sky

      Sky says:

@Yager: Nah, was just pointing out Frazier is in a bit of a funk. I wouldn’t drop either for Valencia at this time.

  4. Gareth says:

I have to sit one of these guys next week. Gardner would normally ride the pine but I’m in need of steals badly and Gardner has a 7 day schedule against an easy pitching lineup.

Also – Why is Gardner not stealing more? He’s way off his normal pace.

            (link)

@Sky: you seem to have it right, so he’s possibly going to bench puig in a weekly league for one of those guys. Pretty sure puig’s like twice as valuable since he’s been up than either of those guys over that time period. Maybe more. I’m sure this slows down, but why bench until it does?

            • Sky

              Sky says:
              (link)

Ok, good, I thought I was telling him to go with Puig and the other guy… Gardner’s been scuffling and hasn’t stolen many bases. I’m sure Puig will cool eventually but there’s no reason to go against the grain while he isn’t. But it’s gonna be hard keeping a .500 BABIP with a GB% at 52.6% and a low walk rate. Still, I’ve seen Puig now a few times. I love his swing, it’s very level; he doesn’t look like he’s trying to do too much with a pitch other than drive it where it should go.

Who do you like the best as an add , not just for this week but for longer; Aaron Hill, Rickie Weeks, Danny Valencia, Adam Dunn or Willin Rosario (my other catcher is Carlos Santana but I can move him around because he’s DH & 1b eligible)

  9. Gareth says:
    (link)

I always love hearing about those links to other players.

Carl Crawford and Michael Bourn playing Little League together.

Dustin Pedroia and Andre Ethier being college teammates at Arizona State and best friends.

The Tidewater Orioles having on its roster B.J. Upton, David Wright, Ryan Zimmerman and Mark Reynolds – at the same time! (bookended by Michael Cuddyer and Justin Upton).

Baseball is hard. The attrition rate is high and the odds of making the show are low:

Know what the difference between hitting .250 and .300 is? It’s 25 hits. 25 hits in 500 at bats is 50 points, okay? There’s 6 months in a season, that’s about 25 weeks. That means if you get just one extra flare a week – just one – a gorp… you get a groundball, you get a groundball with eyes… you get a dying quail, just one more dying quail a week… and you’re in Yankee Stadium.
    – Crash Davis

So when a random team has a bunch kids that become future All Stars on it, that’s pretty unusual and interesting.

    • Sky

      Sky says:

@Gareth: Haha, ok; lotta random in here. I’m sure you know that I already know the Crash Davis quote. Definitely interesting when that much talent appears in one place.

      • Gareth says:
        (link)

@Sky: Yeah, alot Baseball fans know that Crash Davis quote ad naseum.

Kevin Costner was actually at Progressive field recently and even spent time in the announcer booth. He’s filming a Browns Movie in Cleveand called “Draft Day.”

He seemed like a cool guy, and very knowledgeable about America’s favorite pastime (Obviously). He even took batting practice with Indians players (His locker was next to Swisher’s).

If only he could erase that Mullet and American Accent from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

Not at all, was just saying the theory behind his home ballpark being the problem doesn’t apply. All 4 HRs this year are at home and he’s got a .500+ slugging percentage there.

Sky quick football question. Are the football RCL leagues all on ESPN? I should probably head over to your football posts instead of bugging you on here.

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

I’ll have to doublecheck. @JBGilpin is covering our RCLs this year, you might wanna hit him up for the details.

As a Mariners fan, the fact he’s not up yet makes me wonder if there’s even a God…but besides the point, the M’s haven’t done anything that makes sense yet this year. He should’ve been up by now period, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he stays down on the farm for longer.

      • Shake N Bacon says:
        (link)

@Sky: Hmm, that’s too bad. Especially since he pitched in the MLB last year for a bit. Blows my mind.

So what are your first thoughts on Brad Miller? He’s shown some speed, and had two doubles today.

        • Sky

          Sky says:
          (link)

@Shake N Bacon: Yeah, the Mariners are a mess with how they’re dealing with things, IMHO. Erasmo should be up in the majors learning right now. Hopefully he is soon but I have my doubts.

I haven’t had a chance to see him play yet, honestly, but in looking at his size and his numbers to date, he has a good shot at being Dustin Ackley. That’s neither a thumbs up or a thumbs down. I’d hit up our prospect writer Scott as he follows the minors much more closely than myself and others on the site.
