Don't be shellfish...FacebookTwitterGoogle+

Kids these days, you all have it so good.  All your video games have the most primo controllers.  I went and googled Joystick just to find out how much these things have changed over time and what I saw shocked me.  Well, that was partially my fault seeing as I went to google images and had the filter off.  Note to self: never look up ‘grab my joystick’ ever again.  But I digress, the controllers for these new systems are amazing.  The Wii-mote?  The coolest.  The Playstation one?  Stellar.  When I had video games at your age — and yes I’m going to pretend you’re all way younger than me and spoiled so just play along — all I got was two buttons, Rob The Robot and a power glove.  A FREAKIN POWER GLOVE, PEOPLE.  But of course, you just got what the industry calls filler cuz that’s what this industry is full of.  There’s no way I can write 500 plus words about Matt Joyce unless I started talking about his family heritage or his love for deep sea fishing.  Did you really wanna hear about that?  Didn’t think so.  Of course, you didn’t wanna hear about joy sticks either but this Joyce stick should probably be in your lineup for week two of 2013 fantasy baseball.  Don’t believe me?  Well then read on!

There are things that are usually best left alone.  Caves full of badgers, women with big hands and large Adam’s apples, and hitters who are off to a slow start — and that’s exactly what Matt Joyce has been.  Through Saturday Joyce was 2/10 with one solo shot being his claim to fame on the year.  But those stats are what he did at home with the Rays, a place where Joyce’s power hasn’t always played the way you’d want.  Over a three year stretch with the Rays from 2010 to 2012, Joyce has a .439 slugging percentage at home and a .480 slugging percentage away.  I know, it seems miniscule, but it’s the difference between 19 HRs and 27 HRs during that same span, so it matters.  Know what else matters?  Where Joyce gets to play on the road.  He’ll start the week off in Texas, where the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington resides.  It’s a baseball heaven for hitters in general, but for lefties it’s a beautiful place to be with that 325 foot short porch in right field.  Combine that with getting to finish the week in Fenway Park — another hitter-friendly park — and you have yourself a person you could learn The Creep from without even having to grow that nasty, wispy mustache to do it.  Another factor to consider is that April is one of Joyce’s best months.  From that same 2010 thru 2012 time period, Joyce has a .308 average to go with 7 HRs and a .555 slugging percentage in 146 at-bats.

Even if he faces a lefty or two this week in those 6 away games, there’s an opportunity to catch a hot streak right when it starts as Matt Joyce is still only 9.8% and 6% owned in ESPN and Yahoo leagues, respectively.  So if you’re struggling at OF or UTIL, re-Joyce in Matt and what he’ll bring to your team for week two.

Mike Fiers was just dropped in my league…

Should I drop Tillman, Vogelsong, or Hughes to pick him up?
Also, should I use my #4 waver claim, or wait until hes FA?

@Barnes: I wouldn’t call these Creeper posts long time holds, moreso a weekly matchup viewing. Depends on your league size/whether or not it’s a keeper. In standard leagues, I’d say it’s a good go.

is Juan Francisco or Chris Johnson worth a flyer?

I missed getting an atari as a kid and ended up with a commodore 64 instead. Had this game with an astronaught in it. Then got a sega master system when I came out. Missed the whole nintendo craze and went sega all the way. Then went the playstation route instead of the xbox.

Choosing systems is like choosing fantasy players. You got the new shiny wii’s (harper, trout, strasburg) the xbox 360′s (pujols, cano, cabrera) and the good old ps3 that’s been around forever (konerko, berkman, jeter).

You know what else video games and baseball have in common? Mlb the show. Its awesome and the ONLY reason to own a ps3.

@gareth: Ha, it was definitely a selling point for me to get the PS3. But now I want a Wii so I can buy all the old games I used to play. I’ve had a bad hankering for some old school Castlevania and all I get is Chronicles and Symphony of the Night. Good in their own right but not the same…

I had a player kick up a stink in my league because BOTH my third basemen went to the dl and I mad a trade with another player for an emergency 3b for week 2. I picked up jose valverde from the wire as soon as I heard detroit signed him then flipped him for kyle seager.

The guy in my league saw all this and screams “collusion!” And begs everyone in the league to veto it. He also accused me and the other guy of being the sane person working multiple teams! Luckily the trade went through last night with only one vote against (I wonder who that was?).

Anyway -do you think he us right to be angry or is this just another trade and that guy is crazy?

Finally – what do I do with a-ram and lawrie? Is trading players while they are injured not advisable? My problem is the cbs league I’m in has no dl dpots, which I think is stupid. Its also a weekly not daily rotisserie 10 team format.

Even in a 10 team, I’d want to hold; both too talented to drop. Just wait it out with Seager and then try and move one or the other once they come back. Hold Lawrie if you need steals, Aramis if you need a bit more power/RBIs

    Couple supplemental points…

April and May are by far Joyce’s best months with career .378 and .429 wOBA respectively.

Faces two lefties this week (Holland and Lester) who he is a combined 4 for 6 with a home run against.

    • Sky

      Sky says:

Nice! Yeah, I looked back over his last 3 years and almost mentioned it but figured if Arlington/RedSox stadium didn’t sell it, nothing would.

I didn’t realize he had those kind of numbers vs those two. Small sample size on that and I’m curious if his success vs Lester is fairly recent, like last year. I’d be a little worried to run him out there this year right now.

      • bossmanjunior says:
        (link)

        @Sky:

        2-2 with a home run versus Lester in 2012, 0-1 in 2010

        2-3 versus Holland in 2011

The way Lester is throwing so far this season, I would sit him there.
