Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Hold me!  Clap, clap!  Love me!  Clap, clap!  Eight days a week, he will Pronk you!  Hrm, I just turned an awesome Beatles tune into something sordid sounding.  Sorry for the ending to that sentence, lispers, and welcome to your weekly addition of the Creeper series.  Why is it called the creeper series, you ask?  I honestly don’t know, I didn’t make it up.  Grey just said “hey, you wanna rub my feet and feed me grapes while listening to Paula Cole on my iPod?” and when I said the obligatory “no,” he said there’s something else I could do to help him.  In a statement made in the pursuit of honesty and integrity, picking Travis Hafner feels a little underhanded.  As of this typing, he’s 24.8% owned in ESPN leagues and 35% owned in yahoo leagues.  But he’s not owned in one of my RCLs so I felt justified.  Yes, I have more than one RCL.  Don’t judge me.  But more to the point, the ownership of Pronk might be higher than it currently should be.  As of Saturday morning, Hafner is just 8/34 with only 1 HR over his last 14.  So why am I suggesting him, you ask?  Well that’s what paragraph two is for, silly!  With that, let’s see why you should visit the Pronktologist during week 7 of the 2013 fantasy baseball season…

Let’s take a look at why Travis has a solid set up.  Firstly, I didn’t just make a Beatles reference for fun there.  The Yankees have a doubleheader on Monday in Cleveland.  Then they head back home for 6 against the Mariners and Blue Jays.  If you count all those up – it’ll require both hands so refrain from typing that comment until you’re done – you get 8 games, and overall the setup for Travis looks pretty decent for the week.  Firstly, quick question for the room.  What’s better after breaking up with your SO: taking your new hot date out for a romantic dinner and having a great time or doing the same said date because you knew it was where your said Ex works and it’s their night to serve that section of the restaurant.  First, we know the answer is the latter and secondly yes, you are a horrible person.  But it’s ok, we’ll let it slide.  But I bring this weird analogy to your attention because Travis only has 2 HRs on the road so far this year.  One at Rogers Centre (where everyone hits HRs) and one at Progressive Field where he’s 2/7 on the season.  Yeah, small numbers but you gotta think he wants to show his former team he’s still got it just a little bit, yah know?  After that, Hafner’s home schedule gets bumpier than a December wet t-shirt contest in Minnesota (both Felix and Iwakuma are slated to start for the Mariners) but the key thing is he’s at home which is where Travis puts the butter to the bread.  On the year, Hafner is hitting .300 at home with 4 HRs and a .620 slugging percentage.  Oh, and that bad Toronto pitching crew is in town to round out the week.  I’m thinking Travis gets at least 2 HRs this week and still gives you a decent average while letting you change your team name to the Pronks Bombers.  Which would’ve been cool back in 2005 but hey, you’re a tax accountant and your humor is limited.  We understand.  Now sing it with me!  Pronk you every day, girl, always on my mind/One thing I can say, girl, Pronk you all the time!  Ok, now that we’ve proven how indecent it is to substitute ‘Pronk’ for ‘love’ in a song, it’s your sworn duty to do it with other songs in the comments.  Because I really don’t know how to end this piece now, I’m just gonna remove my hands from the keyboard and walk away.  Bye!

@Mariner Mike: Rotation is solid. Your question’s hard to answer given I don’t know the size/depth of your league. With all those guys, it sounds like you’re playing in an 8 team league so that means everyone is stacked with backup talent.

Yeah, you could either try and move Tulo or Longo there. I personally like Arenado a lot. The stats don’t show it, but that kid has walloped the ball so far. Should have a lot more doubles and HRs than he has right now but has some bad luck on the BABIP side. I’d try and upgrade at other positions with either or both.

    Whats up Sky

I read you and Joe C’s Pit Bull discussion from the other day and quite enjoyed your guys takes on the dog. Being in insurance I have had to tell owners of Pitts, Rots, and Chows that they either need to get rid of their dogs or get cancelled by the carrier. It’s unfortunate, because I would never want anyone to tell me to get rid of my dog. In my experience, I have very mixed feelings on Pits, I would never own one and would never feel comfortable with my child playing at someones house that has one. This is because I never know what type of owner they are and what the dog was taught. All dogs will bite, just not all dogs posses the power to permanently damage a human via one bite. I had a friend who lost the full ability to use his hand from a bite from an older one that got him while he was talking to the dogs owner in front of his house. As you may already know when dogs get older and senile and lose there sense they have been known to lunge and bite, it was too bad that dog owner didn’t put that dog down when he should of or my friend would have still had the use of his hand. I get quarterly memos on dog bites from the insurance companies and there is a disproportionately high number of Pitt bites, but I think that has to do more with the damage the bite inflicts because it will always require medical attention. Chow bites are also very common. I hate those roaming bastards. My buddy also had his Pitts shot by the cops when they ran at the cops and had to be taken out, that was not cool, they should have been tranquilized.

I think you guys touched on the important issue, that dog ownership, especially with that particular breed, needs to be taken with the utmost personal responsibility. I know too many assholes with macho attitudes that have mean angry Pits. Its these people that perpetuate the stereotype, I think they should neuter these people just like the dog. Like Bob Barker, I am a big fan of spaying and neutering your animals because we have too many unwanted ones and it mellows them out.

To think its just a stereotype is a little false, I think all large dogs need to be handled properly so attacks are minimized. I have seen great danes, mastiffs, german sheperds, dobermans, rots, chows, and other terrier breeds come across in my reports that have f**ked some shit up. So my point is if you have large animals be smart. If one was to attack my child, I would go to prison because whatever that animal did to her I would do to the owner….double. I’m glad to hear you have a mix, I love me my mutts, less health problems and generally better dispositions because a lot of the bad breeding gets crossed out by the mix.

I have a different opinion on poodles, my mom has allergies and we only owned poodle mixes, never a pure bred, and they were all really fun smart dogs, but again they were mixes, looked like black benji esque dogs that could all jump really high and haul ass. A standard poodle is acutally a large dog that was used as guard dogs in germany. I would like a labradoodle some day…..I could give it the fro crew cut.

I liked your guys discussion and wanted to share

    • Sky

      Sky says:
      (link)

Ah, but the key thing is cities put in mandates against Pits, not ‘large dogs’. That right there makes it a stereotype. It’s because of the dog fighting BS – you’ll notice most cities with the major ordinances against Pits are more well known for their pit fighting circles – that Pits get the bad rap. In the end, it really comes back on the owner of the dog. Even a poodle could be dangerous to little kids if not trained properly or trained to be aggressive. I think my issue is people view dogs as animals and people as something above that. If we looked at it as living creatures, I think we’d have a different perspective. Does the kid who’s raised in a bad house and gets beaten by his parents get put down because they act out based on how they’re raised? Nope, that child needs ‘help’. There are aggressive people by nature and by nurture, same as dogs. But dogs are viewed differently in how we handle them. Like you said, I kinda wish we could spay/neuter people. Think it would solve so many problems.

Insurance-wise, I totally get where you’re coming from. You have to classify things and make blanket decisions. It’s why teen boys have higher car insurance rates than pretty much anyone.

My great grandma had a poodle. It was one of the most annoying creatures I’ve ever interacted with so I’ll admit I have a bias. Plus I just like bigger dogs in general. My wife really wants a labradoodle, or some other poodle mix that I can’t remember the name of.

      • Jack Full of Hate says:
        (link)

@Sky: I know a few people with labradoodles and they are pretty awesome, and don’t shed. I agree with your experience, I have never liked pur bred poddles, at least the little ones, but I have had all great poodle mixes. I like both large and small dogs, mine right now weighs 20ilds and he is a semi lap dog and he’s a cool, it’s poo shit or shitzapoo, not sure what to call it, we got it for my daughter and he turned into my buddy.

That ordinance stuff is garbage, if you lived in a gated community then I could understand that because of associations and the assumption of safety one has to live there. My buddy use to have a dog that was half wolf and that thing would sleep on the roof of his house and that thing was scary. Would literally walk the walls around his house.

You might be able to help a troubled person, but once a dog is trained the wrong way it usually never goes back, they can be mellow around you and still be aggressive away from the house and that is the scary thing about rescue dogs, seen that go terribly wrong more often than not. The difference between them and us as mammals is we posses the rational thought process that allows us to suppress our “instincts” and once they become aggrressive dogs then they are now lost to their own and should be put down and not rescued….IMO. Some people should be neutered just like their animals and thats messed up to say, I love the three generations of gangsters I know that just keep up with the tradition of being a criminal and everyone gets their wings by going to jail

          Sky says:

Oh sure, I understand on the surface that we have the ability to reason and that we’re never ‘lost’ in that respect. But I think about the rehabilitation of a human being. That could take 10 or 15 years. Imagine how much damage they could do in that time? Even if they’re back to the ‘right’ side of things, all the damage done in the interim is pretty big. I come from a messed up home and have seen a lot of these types of people. Family roots for them and tries to help them and they hurt everyone around them for years or still are. Was just making the case for how a dog gets a one and done and we’re allowed to F’ up everything around us for years and are still rarely ‘given up on’. Just a comparison point was all, I completely agree about a dog being broken and unreturnable to normalcy unless you have the ability to dedicate your life to turning that dog’s life around and even then, you just never know how successful you’re going to be. We took in a pit named Cali from a pit shelter. It was the sweetest dog you’d ever meet. Then it met our cat and we’re very thankful she never got a hold of Gracie. Cali had a tweak in the brain. She just wanted to flat out maul other animals. Not even a food thing. She had been brought up from an urban part of Los Angeles, I think, and was probably a fighting dog. We didn’t have the time to try and dedicate training with her so we had to give her back. Was sad we had to but we knew it was for the best. She showed zero aggression towards humans but who knows what she’d do if she got into another animal and someone tried to pry her off.

Yeah, the ordinance thing makes me angry. Like you said ‘assumed safety'; we have a lot of pointless laws like that which only actually effect law-abiding citizens and don’t change the actual problem. Just imagine if there was a human ordinance? You can’t be over 250 pounds or over 6’5″ to live in this part of town because we’ve determined you’re a dangerous breed of human.

Haha, pooshitz! I’m not against small dogs just admittedly there are very few I’ve found myself drawn towards.

          • Jack Full of Hate says:
            (link)

@Sky: I just like all dogs….but I love all puppies.

I’m sorry to hear about the returned dog experience, it’s like you want to do the right thing, but its hard when you get something broken that can’t be fixed. I thought all the fighting dog’s were usually put down. I come from a decent home,my mom is a touchy subject, buying a Mothers Day care always sucks. I have to find the most benign unemotional card, why don’t they make greeting cards for bad parent/child relationships?

When it comes to people and getting fixed is what is wrong with that shit, you don’t get fixed, you never get to go back, you try to move forward and be functional while always having to contend with what changed in you for the worse, thats my take on it. I suffered from PTSD 7 years ago and it took me a couple years to get back to functional, but it’s like part of your brain cracked and it ain’t ever going to be the same. Yeah, it’s an anxiety disorder, but it’s one of those things where you don’t want to be around me when it flairs up, fortunately it only happens a few times a year now and gets less and less every year. I could never imagine being completely fixed….

HA, their fattness lowers property values or the other residents might catch their biggness disease. “Every since THOSE PEOPLE moved in our husbands go over and eat nachos, pizza and drink beers….it’s like contagious” When I was younger I didn’t get jobs because I was 240/250, they thought I couldn’t handle the physical. At the same time I was working with an electrician doing 12 hour days in the dead of summer, yeah I couldn’t handle it. I miss my physical jobs, I feel like Office Space all the time.

@Jack Full of Hate: Yeah, I’m with you dogs/puppies are always welcome in my home as well.

Felt really bad for Cali but it just couldn’t be helped. The shelter said she went on to a nice home but I’m pretty sure she got put down unless she was given to a family out in the middle of the country.

I’m in the same Mommy boat as you; long story, may some day write a book about it. It’s been a long/strange trip. I’m a ‘success story’ but I’m pretty sure you are as well from what you’re describing. We know what that means.

Really, people bug the crap out of me. We talk about how we should preach abstinence and never to abort and here we are with a buncha people pumping out kids like they’re womb is a factory. We’re heading towards Idiocracy, Jack…I’m scared.

I’ve never held up well on physical jobs. I do it when I need to – like retaining wall – but I know I’m not built for it physically. Takes a lot of recovery time for me.

Semi deep league as we have 12 teams and we play two players in every positions plus 5 OF and 4 UT. Really deep in pitching and have miggy and have my offense sputtering a bit.

So i have an offer on the table for miggy i would get tulo and bucholz for miggy and i have already come to terms on trading bucholz and aoki (sitting on my bench) for goldschimdt

Meaning if I had a pitcher going or was grabbing a pitcher off the wire for just one game and I wanted to see If the team I have the pitcher is on is the favorite? Do you ever check that out? I was just wondering if there was more to this kinda guessing game so I wouldn’t have to ask you to guess n kill you with questions. LOL

Or what do u do when your grabbing a pitcher for a game or trying to pick which batter to sit or start. What motions do u go through or you just know cause your a sports genius??

Look at their history vs the team/pitcher they’re going against. See if there are any numbers to say it’s a good or bad matchup. Home/road splits; lefty/righty splits. For example, I wouldn’t stream a left-handed pitcher against the Braves as a general principle. Career #’s of a lot of their hitters show they are good at hitting a lefty.

The favorite? Are you talking gambling/betting? Or just win/loss probability for the pitcher? If it’s the latter, the streamonator does that, I’m pretty certain. I don’t really research wins/losses stuff and the probability correlated. I just target good matchups and hope the win comes with it.

yeah win/ loss.. Hey sorry i’m dumping all these questions on you but I just noticed the stream o meter and I had a lot on my mind this morning. Lol.. I just picked up Garrett jones. You like? Also, if you have a great player, like for me Justin Upton, and he’s in a bad slump, Do you ever bench him for a game or so or never bench someone like him ever? If I did It would have to be Jones to take his place

I can grab Hafner instead of Garrett if you think that’s better

                My bad, or Coco Crisp?

Coco for speed/runs; Jones for HR/RBI. That depends on your needs.

I usually don’t bench a guy like Justin Upton. Garrett Jones is fine but he’s on the FA pool for a reason. If he has a good matchup and his hitting well, he’s a useful player. Not much to say about him though. Jones over Hafner is fine.

Out of these following who do you like for a waiver addition; Kelly Johnson, James Loney, Jimmy Rollins, Mitch Moreland, or Chris Carter from Houston .

I’d be looking into cutting bait with Adam Dunn or Michael Cuddyer.

depending on league size, I wouldn’t be cutting Cuddyer. Those are all very different players. Loney is the hottest of the bunch, could go with him; Chris Carter is about as close to replacing an unproductive Adam Dunn with a productive Adam Dunn as you’re ever going to get.

Would you give up any of these pitchers for Bautista? Corbin, Cahill, Dempster, or Hammel

      Yup, any of them.

Should I pickup Overbay (facing 7 RHPS’s) and drop Moss this week for my IF slot in a 12 team H2H points league? Moreland might be a decent option too (also facing 7 RHP’s). Both Chris Carter and Adam Dunn are available as well. A question a little similar to the previous post…

@Pete: FWIW I already have Hafner – Applying similar logic.

@Pete: I’d rather have Chris Carter than Moss overall. Streaky but easier to start/sit. I wouldn’t want Dunn.

Hey since David price is on the 15 day DL who would you target to add from waivers; Zack Greinke, Alex Cobb, or Patrick Corbin? Is Greinke back to normal after his collarbone injury or do you not trust it?

    Thanks

    • Sky

      Sky says:

There are absolutely zero leagues that should have Greinke on waivers. The fact he’s still out there makes me question if your league has been abandoned by everyone or something.
