Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

With the trade deadline in the bag and closers moving, we have a lot to talk about.  Some of it refreshing like a glass of ice cold lemonade on a summer’s day.  Some of it less so like being asked to write something for Lainie Kazan, wondering who Lainie Kazan is and Googling her to find Playboy pics from the 1970’s juxtaposed with her present-day pics.  You’ve been warned to not Google, now the choice is yours.  Broxton and Brett Myers were so gonna be traded somewhere, that it was written on the side of a building by Banksy and the building left it there because it was by Banksy and everyone got to see it for months.  Everyone else that was rumored to be moving somewhere was written on the side of a building by Neck Face and covered up last week.  If you don’t know who Neck Face is, that you can Google.  No, I don’t think they should’ve covered it, but they did.  In relevant closer news (more to come on Thursday afternoon), Bobby Parnell got the Mets closer job and looked like Ploppy Crapnell, Joe Nathan looks like he’s finally hitting a wall, Ernesto Frieri is crashing into the wall repeatedly trying to go through it with a Smart Car, Matt Capps returned from injury to return to the DL with the same injury he shouldn’t have returned from, Ryan’s hope is Cook’d, Mo Rivera was rumored to returned and those rumors were false, Jim Johnson’s finally looking like Jim Johnson, John Axford’s looking like Carrot Top’s jokes, Aceves has been fine, but Bailey is looming, Santiago Casilla might be the closer though it’s unclear if Bochy knows for sure and Wilton Lopez was named the closer and rightfully no one cares.  It’s the closerousel, y’all!  Anyway, here’s all the closers for 2012 fantasy baseball:

$12 Salads

You know that restaurant your girlfriend/wife/what-have-you likes to go to that charges, like, $12 for a salad? Every time you go there, you have a thoroughly solid meal. No complaints, except you just paid $12 for a salad when you could’ve went to McDonald’s and stuffed you and your woman for ten schmools and had $2 in quarters left over to make the hotel bed vibrate. These closers are $12 salads.

Donkeycorns

Imagine you’re following a donkey, who’s wearing a wool cap, through a desert for 1700 miles. Why are you following a donkey? Because he promises you something wonderful and you just need to trust him. Does the donkey talk? Yes. Yes, he does talk. So when you and the donkey in the wool cap arrive at his destination, he removes his the wool cap to reveal a horn. The donkey is a unicorn and his gift to you for your trust is saves. These closers are Donkeycorns.

6. Rafael Soriano (+3) (David Robertson, Joba Chamberlain)
7. Joel Hanrahan (Jason Grilli, Chris Resop)

16. Addison Reed (-3) (Brett Myers, Matt Thornton)
17. Casey Janssen (+5) (Brandon Lyon, Brad Lincoln)
18. Greg Holland (+2) (Aaron Crow, Tim Collins)

Brain Freeze

I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing apples, bananas and Carlos Marmol– Wait, he just gave up 12 earned runs and hit Castro in the head with a pickoff throw. Brain freeze! Make it stop! Use the following closers at your own risk.

19. Ernesto Frieri (-13) (Jason Isringhausen, LaTroy Hawkins, Scott Downs, Jordan Walden)
20. Jim Johnson (-16) (Pedro Strop)
21. Carlos Marmol (+5) (James Russell, Shawn Camp)

27. Alfredo Aceves (Andrew Bailey, Vicente Padilla)
28. John Axford (-9) (Francisco Rodriguez, Kameron Loe)
29. Jared Burton/Glen Perkins (Matt Capps)
30. Wilton Lopez (-9) (Francisco Cordero, Clint Howard)

I’ve got a really tuff decision to make. Boxed myself into a corner with recent trades (no more of those after deadline) and I have to go with either Harrison @BOS or Homer @CHC. Homer really destroyed me last week and I am gun shy despite the good matchup and him being better out of CINN. Harrison is regressing, but career wise he has dominated the Sox, with a OPS under .500 against. Which potential implosion do I absorb?

I’m pretty sure you were saying Motte and especially Jansen would be great closers right now at this time last year. Anyone like that you see ascending the ranks that might be worth grabbing/stashing in a keeper league?

What do you think of Madson in 13?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Not Madson… Closers are fickle and shouldn’t be keepers in most leagues…

Right now I have Alcides Escobar at SS (in a points league) and I’m looking for bench depth/alternates going into the playoffs.

I have Tulowitzki on the DL, but am obviously concerned about his coming back strong if at all.

I’m looking at trading Tulowitzki for Plouffe. Which side would you rather be on and how close is it?

    Thanks!

          @Jake,

Or is just grabbing Jean Segura off the waiver wire (and not losing Tulo) the best choice?

      Gomez

  16. Jon says:
    (link)

By the way, my league is one where it makes sense to keep closers if you keep the right ones at the right time. First, all 10 teams own about 5 RPs. Anyone picked up off the waiver wire can be kept for 3 points a piece. If I had grabbed Jansen and Motte last year I could’ve kept both for 6 points total going into this year, then they’re re-valued once they’ve been kept (and both guys will be 20 points+ going into 2013). Our total keeper budget is in the 220 points range, so 20 points on a closer is bad. 3 points you can do (very best players cost 30). All that being said, anyone you can grab off waivers has a lot of keeper value, which is why I asked about next year’s Jansen or Motte… if they exist at all.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Axford could turn things around… Cishek could have sneaky value… Walden could get the job back for next year…

      • Jon says:
        (link)

@Grey, cool, thanks! I’m already holding Cishek so that works… Axford and Walden are owned elsewhere but I’ll keep their names in mind.

Thought just popped into my head about closers, I went to comment on the daily wrap up post and you mentioned there was a new post for follow ups. Sure enough, it was about closers! Thank you for reading my mind.

My comment is just a general notion. Does SAGNOF even apply to a guy like Wilton Lopez? I mean, how many games are the AA Astros even going to win, let alone Lopez seeing save opps? I have him as a 4th closer, but isn’t he just going to be a glorified middle reliever? I can realistically only gain one roto point for saves, so is it better to roster another starter even if I’m 37.2 over the projected innings limit?

    • Grey

      Grey says:

@Grey, Don’t get too excited. I’m writing to the National PTA to tell them to tell parents to keep their kids away from Razzball on account of its moral deficiencies.

            @Grey, Oh yeah, I forgot.

I can remember when Soap came out. It had a gay character. I thought it meant he was happy all the time.

    Cain @ STL

Already starting Sheets @ PHI as well.

      Starting them all…

  42. T-Bone says:

Love the list except for Aroldis at #3, he’s the most dominant closer in the game. Also, Janssen deserves to be higher. Hes at no risk to lose his job, and hes blown one save all year.

So looks like Bochy’s fat head is going CBC, citing Affeldt can be used to close games and it will prevent any blister flare up from Casilla.

What’s the move here for Casilla owners, Grey? Handcuff Casilla? Drop him and pick up Affeldt? Do nothing?

    • Grey

      Handcuff him…

    • Grey

      Grey says:

          Exactly…

  54. Slappy Pappy says:
    (link)

Garza potentially getting shut down for the year with a stress reaction in the back of his elbow. I don’t think it could take the pressure associated with the trade rumors. Or maybe it was all those sliders…

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      Ha… Yup…

  55. Hi Grey — My solid pitching staff is all of a sudden looking bad, thanks to Anibal’s arrival in Detroit and Garza’s elbow. Straily’s on waivers … which of those two should I drop for him?

My other SPs are Bum, Gio, Matt Moore, and Medlen. I need around 7 starts a week to stay on innings pace, which means full-time SPs.

Also, who do you like more as a streamer tomorrow between Karstens and Ohlendorf? (It’s a deep league, obviously). The Stream-o-nator rates them roughly equal (110 points and 107, respectively). I need Ks and WHIP help most of all.

    Thanks!

    • Carnac says:
      (link)

@Enrique, You can lose Garza. Word is he’s now been shut down “indefinitely.”

      • @Carnac, Thanks Carnac … and cool name.

  58. I’ve got Garza in both my leagues. You helped out in the deep league a little earlier, but in my shallower league (14 teams 6×6 redraft roto, 1200-inning limit) there are a lot more choices. Who are the best couple of Garza fill-ins between Strailey, Medlen, Detwiler, Fister, Liriano, Worley, Maholm ….

Also, are any of those a pickup over Scherzer or Anibal? The other SPs are Bum and Cain.

    Thanks!

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      Fister, Strailey over those two…

    • @Enrique, I forgot to include that my biggest pitching needs are Ws, followed by ERA and then WHIP.

  59. Steve says:

Would you replace Hill with any of the below in the ol’ 12-team H2H? OBP as well as AVG…

    Kendrick
    Tejada
    Dn Murphy
    Young
    Infante
    Scutaro
    Keppinger

    • Grey

      Grey says:

Ha…I was just thinking about dropping Hill in my RCL… I’d go with Kendrick…

  60. Steve says:
    (link)

    Finally.

    Mon, Aug 6

The Rays activated Longoria (hamstring) from the disabled list Monday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Recommendation: Longoria has not played for the Rays since Apr. 30, but he will be on the field when the Rays return to action Tuesday night. Despite Longoria’s lengthy layoff, he figures to bat third and play every day almost immediately, so fantasy owners who have anxiously been awaiting his return should still garner some value from him the rest of the way.

      • Steve says:
        (link)

@Grey, Which means I have to

A – choose between Konerko and LaRoche for 1B, and

B – choose between the ‘loser’ of A, Ethier and A-Ram for my Util spot.

        Thoughts?

(obviously it would be good to trade some of those guys)

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

          A. LaRoche — You’ll get more in a trade for Konerko (I’d think) B) Yeah, I’d do it…

@Grey, Yeah – 23 pts clear as of right now. I was in second pretty much all season, but 5th now. I should post an update in the forums. Will do it tomorrow.

If you’ve got Longo coming back (and Mad-Bum and J-Zimm are your top 2 SPs, with not a lot behind them), you’d trade A-Ram for Greinke, right?

    It’s H2H, 12 teams…

Keeper…Parker or Strailey…I would have to drop Parker to use my waiver on Strailey since I can’t find anyone to take Parker off my hands now that he’s taken a dump all over his ERA the last few weeks…

      I’d hold Parker in a keeper…

I need to replace Garza’s expected innings with another SP in a 13 team roto league where my main concerns are maintaining ERA and WHIP. I’m pretty well off on Ks so that isn’t a huge concern right now. The names I’ve seen frequently mentioned in the comments (Medlen, Straily, Detweiler) that would seem to be suggested adds are already gone.

You may have better suggestions but the options look to be guy like Jason Vargas, D.Holland, C.Richard, WY Chen, Colon, Beavan, Corbin, Feldman, DeVries, and Blanton.

Brett Anderson is out there if you think that hoping for his healthy return next week is the best way to go. Liriano is also there but I’m ‘fraid.

Thanks in advance. As always, thanks for the great site.

Whatsup Brostache!!! I picked up Storen to protect Tie Clip. I have a warm bench of 3+ my Utility spot. I am looking to add Marcum (rehabbing Thursday). Would you drop 1) Gobot Jones, 2) Cofart, 3) CarGo-mez or 4) Frazier?

I can almost here Howard Cosell screaming, “Frazier Goes Down, Frazier Goes Down”! So.. what do you think? Thanks in advance!!!!
