Closer Look
Matt Capps got traded and kept his job, Rauch didn’t get traded and lost his job, Octavio Dotel got traded and lost his job, Brian Wilson didn’t get traded but is moping because his shoes are no longer shiny. It’s the bullpens, ya’ll. Just yesterday Lindstrom was out with a sore back that he hurt when he tried to get the A’s replacement closer in his fantasy league. That’s a true story in opposite world. On the top of the rankings, Wagner made himself a $12 Salad. On the bottom of the rankings, I wanted to move Chris Perez into the Donkeycorns, but he needs more time in the role first. He’ll be a Donkeycorn by September. Mark my words! But don’t mark them on your computer, that doesn’t come off. Anyway, here’s all of the closers for your fantasy baseball team, as of right now:
$12 Salads
You know that restaurant your girlfriend/wife/what-have-you likes to go to that charges, like, $12 for a salad? Every time you go there, you have a thoroughly solid meal. No complaints, except you just paid $12 for a salad when you could’ve went to McDonald’s and stuffed you and your woman for ten schmools and had $2 in quarters left over to make the hotel bed vibrate. These closers are $12 salads.
1. Mariano Rivera (Kerry Wood, Joba Chamberlain)
2. Carlos Marmol (+1) (Sean Marshall, Andrew Cashner)
3. Heath Bell (+2) (Luke Gregerson, Ryan Webb)
4. Billy Wagner (+4) (Takashi Saito, Kyle Farnsworth)
Donkeycorns
Imagine you’re following a donkey, who’s wearing a wool cap, through a desert for 1700 miles. Why are you following a donkey? Because he promises you something wonderful and you just need to trust him. Does the donkey talk? Yes. Yes, he does talk. So when you and the donkey in the wool cap arrive at his destination, he removes his the wool cap to reveal a horn. The donkey is a unicorn and his gift to you for your trust is saves. These closers are Donkeycorns.
5. Jonathan Broxton (-4) (Octavio Dotel, Hong-Chih Kuo)
6. Francisco Rodriguez (Pedro Feliciano, Bobby Parnell)
7. Jose Valverde (-3) (Ryan Perry, Phil Coke)
8. Joakim Soria (Robinson Tejeda)
9. Rafael Soriano (+1) (Dan Wheeler, Joaquin Benoit)
10. Brian Wilson (-1) (Sergio Romo, Chris Ray)
11. Ryan Franklin (+1) (Jason Motte, Kyle McClellan)
12. Jonathan Papelbon (+1) (Daniel Bard)
13. Neftali Feliz (+1) (Frank Francisco, Darren O’Day)
14. Leo Nunez (+1) (Clay Hensley, Brian Sanches)
15. Francisco Cordero (+1) (Arthur Rhodes, Nick Masset)
16. Matt Capps (+2) (Jon Rauch, Matt Guerrier, Jesse Crain)
17. Brian Fuentes (+3) (Fernando Rodney, Kevin Jepsen)
Brain Freeze
I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing apples, bananas and Huston Street– Wait, he just gave up 12 earned runs and hit Tulo in the head with a pickoff throw. Brain freeze! Make it stop! Use the following closers at your own risk.
18. David Aardsma (+1) (Brandon League)
19. Matt Lindstrom (Brandon Lyon)
20. Chris Perez (+6) (Rafael Perez)
21. Brad Lidge (+2) (Ryan Madson, Jose Contreras)
22. Bobby Jenks (+2) (J.J. Putz, Matt Thornton)
23. Kevin Gregg (+2) (Jason Frasor, Scott Downs)
24. Huston Street (+2) (Matt Belisle, Manny Corpas)
25. John Axford (+2) (Trevor Hoffman, Zach Braddock)
26. Drew Storen/Tyler Clippard/Sean Burnett (-8) (Miguel Batista)
27. Joel Hanrahan/Evan Meek (-7) (Sean Gallagher)
28. Alfredo Simon/Mike Gonzalez (David Hernandez)
29. Aaron Heilman (+1) (Sam Demel, Juan Gutierrez)
30. Michael Wuertz/Craig Breslow (-19) (Brad Ziegler, Andrew Bailey, Lou Ferrigno)

@Grey: Sweet. I can tell u have become more bullish on Garcia over the past few weeks. We all know he’s pitching over his head, but it’s looking more like he’ll be good all year as opposed to just a couple months. Next year he will be really overrated. Like I said earlier this year, he’s this years J.A. Happ. Hope he keeps it up. Ludwick just dropped 2 the my wire. Gordon over Ludwick?

In a 12-Team 6×6 AL-only league (R, HR, RBI, SB, XBH, OBP), I’m getting pretty tired of using SRod and Jose Lopez at my 2B and Util spots. Given their lack of counting stats and horrible OBPs, I would have been better off leaving those spots empty the past couple of weeks. Should I drop one for Kila, Valencia, or Joyce? If so, which one?
Thanks.

@Grey: re: your last response in the last post where you said try CarGo and Starlin for Doc and Furcal:
Would you think that Wright and Starlin for Doc and Furcal would be too much? Are you just assuming that I have enough depth in the OF that I can take the loss of CarGo? Just curious, I have a man crush on CarGo…

@Cheez Whit: Wuertz
@ThE sHiT: I’d hold Gordon for now.
@CalCheats: Choo, Grandy, Ibanez…
@Wah: I’d take Fielder.
@Earl Battey: Sean-Rod for Valencia.

Help please.
Got offered the following trade:
My Kemp for his Adverb
I am sinking fast in whip and era and think i can steady the ship and even make a push with the adverb and brett anderson coming off the DL for me.
My OF w/o Kemp would be: CarGo/Dread/Lind/DYoung
Its a deep 15 team league and the only other option i have is a wainwright offer for my kemp AND dempster.
Tough bc i know its not equal value moving Kemp for the adverb but if i wait too much longer i will be trading for an sp with like what, 8 starts left in the year?
My pitching b4 the trade:
Josh Johnson
Ricky Nolasco
Ryan Dempster
Max Scherzer
Brett Anderson
After:
Josh Johnson
Cliff Lee
Ricky Nolasco
Brett Anderson
Max Scherzer
with dempster being a rotating piece or a trade chip.
Offense:
Montero
Votto
J.Lopez
Zimmerman
Srod
Laroche
CarGo
Dread
Lind
DYoung
A rotating DH depending on needs
Sorry for the long post but its a big decision for me, first place has a huge pot, currently in 4th.

Is Axford is a brain freeze because of the possibility that the Brewers will hand his job over to Hoffman, so that they can have some sort of accomplishment (600 saves) this year? Axford’s got great numbers, but Hoffman’s been pretty decent for the past two months, though he only has 17 IP over that period.
[Reply]
@quimmy: I’d want Kemp.
@royce!: Yeah, Hoffman’s still lurking there.

I am hurting for steals and I am considering trading Marmol and Buchholz for Gardner and Montero. Considering my team, would pull that off, Grey?
12 team mixed league, my team is as follows:
Santana, Teixeira, Weeks, Wright, Y.Escobar, Delmon Young, Granderson, Hamilton, Phillips and Beltran on the bench.
Buchholz, Haren, Bills, Scherzer, Price, Lester, Cueto, Bumgarner, Marmol, Simon, Bell, Hanrahan, Chris Perez and Rauch (having hard times cutting him loose).

Arlington will hurt his ratios, so understand you are paying more for name value and his past performance than what he will do. I would try to get another stud pitcher in a better park before settling for Lee. If anything, I think you are better off with Waino. Just my humble opinion sir.

I could also add my Abreu, Alex Gonzalez, Krispy, Johan, or pick from a selection of Brain-Freeze closers (Axford, Perez, Jenks). Do you see a fair 2-1 deal (Soriano + ____ = _____)?

@Grey: Would you trade Verlander or F-Her straight up for Fielder?

Wieters or Buck? Can’t believe I have to wade the catcher waters again.

@Grey: It’s a keeper, but I’m not keeping him, but #2 its a 10 teamer 7 keeper so someone else is liable to possibly snag him if i drop him outright.
Drop Bruce, Tabata, DomBrown, or Mike G (4th RP in a 3RP league)

@timSTi: In that it was still attached to the rest of his leg?
[Reply]
@timSTi: Drop Santana, or wait a day to hear more news on his injury.
@Fletch: Verlander

@Steve: I have to chime in with a “HA!” That was a good one.
It did look real bad, though. I’ve been looking for a reason to drop him as I have McCann and no one in the league will trade for a C (it’s the RCL, so that makes sense).

@Grey. I know I’ve been hitting you with this one for a couple days now, but I’ve finally got a bite. So I have Strasburg AND Latos, both of whom concern me because of the white gloves they’re being treated with. I am in a 16 team h2h non-keeper and I’ve been going back and forth with a guy and it looks like I may have him talked into one of two deals. Which one, if any do you prefer or would you even pull the trigger on either.
Deal #1: I give Stephen Drew, Ben Zobrist, and Stephen Strasburg for Derek Jeter, Josh Beckett and Edinson Volquez.
Deal #2: I give Stephen Drew, Ben Zobrist, Stephen Strasburg AND Matt Latos for Jeter, Beckett, and Josh Johnson.
Drew and Zobrist for Jeter addresses my SS need and his at 2nd, but I’m taking the chance that Beckham will be fine for me at 2nd going forward…Im concerned about Volquez ( and even a little about Beckett ) but pitching is super scarce in our league and the 2 pitchers for 1 is the only reason I even consider the Volquez deal. P.S.- Our trade deadline isn’t until Aug. 13th.

@motorcitykitty: These aren’t good deals.

@Steve: The fact that he was reported to be joking around in the locker room as opposed to under sedation in the ER is encouraging. After the way that injury looked, I’ll be happy if he starts next year on time.
I’m going to have to wait for the MRI results to make a move. Otherwise, between Gallardo, Swish, McGehee and another guy who’s still pitching whose name I won’t mention – it’s been a nice night for the good guys. Too bad the Cardinal pen blew that Westbrook start. Duncan pixie dust strikes again!

Really? Not even the Strasburg/Latos for Johnson/Beckett? Disregard the Zobrist/Drew for Jeter, Zobrist is sitting on my bench and I’m getting the #2 SS in our league in pts for him. I figure I had better get something for him now. But are you not high on Beckett? Just got screwed out of a win to a last place team because I lost 2 starts out of Strasburg last week. No doubt they’ve both been awesome for me, but Johnson and Beckett? Not trying to convince you, just wondering what your reasoning is…..

Burnett with the save, but could be because Storen threw 2 innings yesterday. I have Storen and Hanrahan, but I still don’t feel like it’s urgent to drop either for Burnett. Would you?

Hellickson sent back down to AAA.
I won’t be surprised when the other shoe drops, but damn I’m loving me some Cahill right now.
Speaking of other shoes dropping… From seeing the Santana collision better on the MLB replay, the only saving grace may be that his left cleat actually came off his foot, allowing his leg and hips to swing a little during the impact. The cleat actually remained stuck in the ground. If that foot stays in there, his leg’s snapped like a twig.
[Reply]
@Steve: Yup
@motorcitykitty: Beckett’s not as good as I think you can get. If you don’t think you can do better, then go for it.
@tall chicks: I wouldn’t drop either for him.
@3FingersBrown: Interesting, hadn’t noticed the cleat. You’re probably right about it being worse if that hadn’t happened.

@Grey: Seeing it from another angle, you can see the leg twisted pretty badly. Since his foot came free from his cleat, the knee didn’t seem to give the wrong way like it looked initially. I’m hoping he just hyper-extended it but we’ll see tomorrow…
I already had V-Mart/Mariano’s owner on the horn. He’s all to happy to give me those two for a 6 next year.
Man, I picked the wrong day to stop smoking… as if there’s ever a good day right?
[Reply]
@3FingersBrown: Yeah, just watched it at MLB and saw the cleat. Did look a little less worse from that angle. Still out for the year bad, but not career-threatening.

@Grey: Interesting offer just sent to me in my roto league:
His Wandy for my Butler.
Aside from steals, my hitting has been pretty good (OBP instead of AVG) and I’m deep at the corners currently with Tex, Youk, Butler, Huff, C. Johnson & Morrison. (Currently Huff and Morrison are in my OF).
I’m hurting badly in ERA & WHIP however. Do I go for that, or try to get more for Butler? Wandy’s seems to have turned the corner.
