Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Here’s one way baseball could take cues from fantasy baseball.  Yesterday, the Marlins announced that they’d be going to a closer-by-committee, which puts Steve Cishek in line for saves.  If they had a fantasy baseballer (<–my mom’s term!) running their club, things would’ve been different down in South Florida.  About two months ago, the Marlins would’ve dropped Bell for Cishek, then they would’ve traded Reyes for Adam Dunn and Cozart, dropped and picked up Josh Johnson four times, asked Stanton to catch for the eligibility and changed their team name seven times, finally going with the Miami Turdsuckers.  In other closer news, Carlos Marmol is actually being a decent closer, but I’ll believe it after another two months, Axford looks like the type of closer that barely makes it through this season then is replaced early next April, Huston Street, Broxton and Brett Myers are on the precipice of being traded if anyone knows what precipice means — I sure as heck fire don’t — Jim Johnson and Fernando Rodney want to be $12 Salads, but common perception says they’re not there, Taipei Slinko is saying, “And you doubted me in the spring,” and now Taipei will probably lose his job — pride comes before the yadda2, and more closer news will come later today with our Bottom of the Ninth post.  Anyway, here’s all the closers for 2012 fantasy baseball:

$12 Salads

You know that restaurant your girlfriend/wife/what-have-you likes to go to that charges, like, $12 for a salad? Every time you go there, you have a thoroughly solid meal. No complaints, except you just paid $12 for a salad when you could’ve went to McDonald’s and stuffed you and your woman for ten schmools and had $2 in quarters left over to make the hotel bed vibrate. These closers are $12 salads.

1. Craig Kimbrel (Eric O’Flaherty, Kris Medlen, Jonny Venters)
2. Kenley Jansen (+15) (Javy Guerra)
3. Aroldis Chapman (+15) (Sean Marshall, Jose Arredondo)
4. Jonathon Papelbon (Antonio Bastardo)

Donkeycorns

Imagine you’re following a donkey, who’s wearing a wool cap, through a desert for 1700 miles. Why are you following a donkey? Because he promises you something wonderful and you just need to trust him. Does the donkey talk? Yes. Yes, he does talk. So when you and the donkey in the wool cap arrive at his destination, he removes his the wool cap to reveal a horn. The donkey is a unicorn and his gift to you for your trust is saves. These closers are Donkeycorns.
5. Fernando Rodney (+8) (Kyle Farnsworth)
6. Jim Johnson (Pedro Strop)
7. Joel Hanrahan(Juan Cruz, Jason Grilli)
8. Ernesto Frieri(+20) (Scott Downs, Jordan Walden)
9. Rafael Soriano (-6) (David Robertson)
10. Jason Motte (Mitchell Boggs, Fernando Salas)
11. Joe Nathan(+6) (Mike Adams, Robbie Ross)
12. Rafael Betancourt (+7) (Matt Belisle, Rex Brothers)
13. J.J. Putz (-4) (David Hernandez, Bryan Shaw)
14. Addison Reed (+16) (Matt Thornton, Hector Santiago)
15. Ryan Cook (+6) (Grant Balfour)
16. Tom Wilhelmsen(-3) (Brandon League)
17. Jose Valverde (-6) (Joaquin Benoit)
18. Huston Street(-12) (Dale Thayer, Luke Gregerson)

Brain Freeze
I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing apples, bananas and Heath Bell– Wait, he just gave up 12 earned runs and hit Hanley in the head with a pickoff throw. Brain freeze! Make it stop! Use the following closers at your own risk.

19. John Axford (-17) (Francisco Rodriguez, Jose Veras)
20. Chris Perez(Vinnie Pestano)
21. Brett Myers(-6) (Brandon Lyon, Wilton Lopez)
22. Jonathan Broxton (Greg Holland, Aaron Crow)
23. Tyler Clippard (Drew Storen, Sean Burnett)
24. Casey Janssen(+6) (Francisco Cordero, Luis Perez, Sergio Santos)
25. Santiago Casilla (-6) (Sergio Romo, Jeremy Affeldt)
26. Bobby Parnell(-2) (Frank Francisco, Jon Rauch)
27. Alfredo Aceves(-2) (Vicente Padilla, Mark Melancon)
28. Carlos Marmol(-2) (James Russell, Shawn Camp)
29. Matt Capps (-8) (Glen Perkins, Jared Burton)
30. Steve Cishek/Heath Bell/Juan Carlos Oviedo (-3) (Michael Dunn, Randy Choate, Joey Cora in a wig)

  2. Mdgross says:

I hate continuing to harp on my league situation, but things are so bad in the saves dept that my offer of Tyler Colvin for Heath Bell was shot down. Naturally, I had Cishek just a few days ago and was still in the 3-day-waiver-holding-pattern when Bell finally blew Ozzie’s top.

I’ve got Frieri + frigging Downs, and these Brain Freezes:
    Bobby Parnell
    Alfredo Aceves
    Jared Burton

And this is after ~100 moves. I am the poster child for not planning for saves during the draft. I’ve tried paying a steak dinner for those salads and if I get a reply, it’s for surf and turf!

  4. Stacheaphobe says:
    (link)

Hoe is Tyler Clippard getting no recognition from any fantasy writers? He’s been an elite reliever for 2 years, a good reliever for the 2 years before that, his strikeout rate is better than a k/inning, and he’s got the closer job for a winning team. He’s basically a slightly lite version of what Kimbrel was last year only with a major league track record of doing it previously. This guy is a donkeycorn and deserves some acknowledgement!

    • A Hill O' Beans says:
      (link)

@Stacheaphobe, I’m guessing it’s probably got something to do with the fact that Washington has a 24 year old kid who’s clearly the closer of the future, who also happens to have saved 43 games last year and he’s coming off the DL after the all star break….

  5. Jack Full of Hate says:
    (link)

I’m really hoping during the break that some of these horribly underperforming guys went off to Cancun ala Nick Van Exel or spent some quality time taking peyote with a shaman in a teepee in the desert and figure this out. Yeah I’m talking to you Gonzo and extra Krispy.

  8. Mike says:
    (link)

I’m going to have a bit of a roster crunch when Storen comes off the DL. Currently I have Putz, Clippard and Downs as relief pitchers. Downs doesn’t get alot of saves, but his ERA & WHIP are helpful.

Not sure if I should drop Downs or just cut bait with Storen since Clippard is doing so well and it seems unlikely the Nats are going to change closers in the middle of a 1st place season.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@Mike, Cut Downs for saves, Storen for ERA/WHIP help… I’d probably lose Downs…

  9. A Hill O' Beans says:

How much did I dislike reading this post when my closers in the RCL are Street, Broxton and Myers? At least I’ve also got Janssen, who should hold the job for a little while longer, until Santos comes back at the very least.

Thanks for the punch to the gut Grey, good morning to you too…

    (link)

    hi grey,

as always, great stuff. appreciate the work.

i’m hoping i could use the off day for some advice in a unusually long post, and i’m posting early in the am when time is more available

most of us baseballers know when our team has big holes and what we could do to fix them; i turn to experts like you and rudy for the nuance moves to get my team over the top and win

one of my teams is like this:

standard yahoo 12 team mixed 5×5 roto league (1400 inn max)

    now 3rd of 12 – 84 pts (leader has 93.5, 2nd is 87, 4th is 77.5)

    roster is

    c j montero
    1b rizzo
    2b a craig
    3b miggy
    ss jeter
    of beltran
    of melky
    of hamilton
    util austin jackson
    util q berry/he run
    bn carlos quentin
    dl lucroy

    sp felix
sp j johnson (just got him)
    p capuano
    p anibal
p burnett (new waiver pickup – started 1 time for me)
    p scherzer
p m leake (just got him)
    rp soriano
    rp casilla
    rp janssen
    rp broxton
    rp holland

ok in most categories (3rd place) except whip (1.33) and era (4.17) which are like 2-3 or 3-4pts (leader is 1.17/3.24) and sb (4 pts with 58; 7-8 pt teams have 77)

leading saves with 82, next 2 teams have 65 each – one is punting sp and has all closers

    was leading league (avg 15 pt lead) from week 3 until last day of may, then started slipping; holding steady last 7 days before asb;

overall, what do you think of this team?

generally, what to do? stand pat? obviously pitching needs help, but i just traded for j johnson and have not had him start for me yet; also got burnett off waivers and leake as fa – both started 1 time so far

should i try to flip a closer in a package for a starter? the closers i have seem shaky, though, and safety may be in numbers

as for sb’s, maybe he run and jackson will keep me competitive

thinking if i max saves with 12 pts, and get 4 pts in sb, they would average to 8 pts which could keep me in the mix, assuming the pitching gets better

    what do you think?

    again, thanks for your help

    • Long Bawls says:
      (link)

@later tater, You have injury risks with Hamilton, Craig, Beltran, Quentin, and modest bottom-falling-out risks with Melky, Jackson, Berry, Rizzo, Montero. It’s also conceivable that none of your closers will be closing in 3 weeks (which is not really a helpful statement, because anything is conceivable at any time). I’d go for a couple of top-tier maybe slightly less-risky hitters, and I think you have the ingredients for it in a trade. Like try for Kinsler, Kemp, or Uggla (or more than one) for one of your OF+a closer? You can always grab a speed guy off waivers, right?

      • Grey

        Grey says:
        (link)

I’d start with what Long Bawls is suggesting… Your pitching’s not that bad…

          @Grey

thanks to both for the help

i was shocked when this team started to do well as it has, and now i feel i have to try to keep the run going

  11. Alcesto says:

    • Adam says:
      (link)

      @Alcesto,

I’m not Grey, but I would drop single one of those guys for Middlebrooks. And Belt is probably the top candidate, he’s been benched 4 of his last 8 games.

    • Adam says:

      @Tim,

I’d stick with the guy that’s actually playing well, plouffe.

Tough to expect more than maybe a .235 avg, 4 hr, and 15 sb from maybin in the 2nd half.

Team wants my Jansen for either Rios, Rasmus or JMac in a keeper league. Tried for his Sale but no dice.

I could use an upgrade in OF or SP and with Frieri, Putz and Cook I think I’m okay without Jansen. Would you deal Jansen for one of those 3 and if so, who?

    • Long Bawls says:
      (link)

@Jon, I’d go Jmac then Rasmus, though one could make a good argument for flipping the order. Rios not quite as attractive in a keeper.

      • Jon says:

This doesn’t forward the discussion any, but I just lowballed a usually-pretty-smart leaguemate: my Lawrie for his (deposed?) King Felix. He came back with a demand for…Dunn. Not as a sweetener, but as the whole of the trade. I accepted. The ASB does weird things.

    4 BB (yes, 4!)
    3 ER (yes, 3!)
    12 saves

    Senior Gris,

Is it silly to drop Axford and use his spot to stream SP’s in a H2H league? I still would have Broxton Jansen and Guy Frieri in relief. I could drop Casilla too, but I would rather send to another team the poison pill that is Ax. Thanks.

    Question.

Should I trade my First round draft pick (Really a 7th rounder because we keep 6) for Brandon Morrow, Mat Latos and Michael Morse.

SP depth is Weaver, CJ Wilson, Billingsley.

OF and UTIL: Kemp, Cargo, Chris Young and a rotation of bonafide scrubs at UTIL.

My keepers are good enough where I likely won’t keep these guys at the end of the season but could use them as trade bait.

  41. Grey — In my 16-team 5×5 redraft roto league I’m in danger of falling behind in innings (1250 limit) and and am losing ground on Ks as a result. There are some OK choices for an extra starter (Morales, Nolasco, Villanueva, Norris, McAlistair, Buchholtz, Blackley). Trouble is, I don’t know who to drop and which one to pick up.

    My questions are:

    1) Should I pick one of these guys up as a fifth starter or stream them? Which are the best choices?

    2) Or if I’m only 15 innings under pace and in 10th in Ks but only 15Ks from 7th and 35 from 3rd, should I wait a little until someone cools down or the Mets closer situation becomes clear and I can drop either FrankFrank or Parnell?

    3) And if you think I should take action right away, who should I drop? The roster is below. Ruggiano could be the guy to drop even though he’s hot, just because I have good depth at OF/UTIL (we have 3 OF and one UTIL slot). There is only one DL slot, so I’m carrying two DL guys on the roster.

    The roster:

    C Rosario
    1B Miggy, Rizzo
    2B Aaron Hill, Kendrick
    3B Wright
    SS Desmond, Lowrie
OF Bruce, Stubbs, Victorino, Ruggiano, Rasmus

SP Bumgarner, Gio, Anibal, Matt Moore
    RP Aaron Cook, Parnell, Cishek

    DL Berkman, FrankFrank, Marcum

Complicated question, I know … I appreciate the help!

    Grey:
I am in a first year 14 team keeper H2H league and am in an enviable position. In first place and have a surplus of keeper candidates. Am starting to get “I will trade my present for future trade offers”.

The keeper rules are (1) 5 keepers (2) you can keep the player as long as you want (3) you sacrifice the round you drafted the player in if you keep him (4) For WW acquisitions you lose your final round pick

Which 5 or six players would you keep under these rules.

My keeper candidates with their round drafted:

    Braun – 1
    Strasburg – 5
    Bumgarner – 7
    Goldschmidt: 11
    Encarnacion – 13
    Bryce Harper – 15
    Chris Sale – 16
    Addison Reed – 19
    Salvador Perez – WW
    Anthony Rizzo – WW
    Lance Lynn – WW
    Trevor Bauer – WW
    Jake Peavy – WW
    De Aza – WW
    Doubront – WW

If I could have the best 5-6 keepers on this list given these groundrules it would be GREATLY appreciated. For the record I am leaning Braun, Strasburg, Harper, Sale, Rizzo with Encarnacion, Goldschmidt and Bumgarner just under the cut.

    • Rob says:
      (link)

      One more minor issue:

Draft seeding is by reverse order finish. Which is why I am having a hard debate over Braun. Yes I lose a #1 pick. But the difference between a top 3 #1 pick and a bottom 3 #1 pick in a 14 team league is huge.

@Grey, Kinda. I’ve traded away a bunch of pitching (Peav, Max, Jim J), though two of them (D Hudson and Paulino) headed for TJ surgery almost right away. I still have:

                Bum
                J-Zimm
                Cahill
                Milone
                Norris
                Morales

and a bunch of closers. Not great, but hopefully I can muddle through with good streamers, and I haven’t completely given up on the idea of going all relievers (we count Holds too) at some stage.

Is third base becoming the new catcher for fantasy baseball draft purposes?

Why would I draft a Zimmerman/Longoria/Wright (although Wright’s having a great bounceback season) in the 2nd round when they constantly underperform and get injured???

    • Grey

      Grey says:

Grey, i’m surprised you’re not talking up wil myers more. looks like he might hit his way into the royals lineup, especially if they can deal frenchy. just curious as to why you seem more hesitant to preemptively pick him up like you did with bauer and rizzo.

He’ll be in tomorrow’s Buy/Sell… I think he’ll be called up in September, but he could get called sooner… Cubs just needed to move LaHair to the OF for Rizzo… Bauer just needed to be called up… Myers needs someone to be traded, which is not as easy… I think he projects similarly to Rizzo, yeah… No problem, thanks for the kind words…
