Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

There’s a benefit to playing for the Marlins besides learning the value of having to buy your own equipment and refreshments.  “Guys, money’s tight, you’re gonna have to bring your own Gatorade from now on.”  That’s a Marlins exec on the first day of the spring.  The other benefit is the Marlins don’t care what the hell you do as long as you’re playing for the salary minimum.  You know that guy who always brought Popov back to the dorm room?  Did he return from the liquor store saying it would go best with orange juice?  Nope.  Popov was proven to cause cancer in vermin, but it got you drunk and was cheap.  That’s the Marlins team.  And sometimes the Marlins, like Popov, cause projectile vomiting and lead you to wonder how you ended up with so much orange and teal in your closet.  The Marlins don’t care if Christian Yelich hits.  He will play every day because he’s cheap.  Since we don’t need to collect every 20% off Bed, Bath and Beyond coupon we’ve ever received in the mail when we put together our fantasy team, the cheap thing doesn’t matter to us.  It does matter when you’re wondering if Yelich will get 550 ABs and hit in a relatively good spot in the lineup.  Who else are they moving up in the order?  Ed Lucas?  You throw Lucas the ball because he can’t hit it.  Casey McGehee?  I just vomited onto my bathroom mirror and it spelled out, “Gross.”  Adeiny Hechavarria?  More like Adon’tthinkso Hereallysucks.  So, what can we expect from Christian Yelich for 2014 fantasy baseball and what makes him a sleeper?

In 2011, Yelich stole 32 bases and hit 15 homers in Single-A.  He did all of this while being 14 years old (or at least looking like it).  As he progressed up the professional baseball food chain, neither his homers nor speed stopped (though he was thrown out of an R-rated movie).  When he was promoted to the majors this summer, he hit 4 homers and stole 10 bases in only 62 games.  To think, just last year he still had a newspaper route and was going to the Junior Prom (with a Senior!).  Assuming he can handle the workload this spring of finishing up high school and playing baseball, there’s no reason to think he won’t be at the top of the Marlins lineup or batting 2nd and be able to steal at least 20 bases while chipping in at least 10 homers.  The only real drawback is the same thing that was a benefit about 300 words ago — Popov.  Who’s driving in Yelich once he gets on base?  Giancarlo and…Garrett Jones?  Aw, geez.  So, you can count on one hand his runs scored and RBIs, but he should still be a cheap 10/20 guy.  In 2014, I’ll give Yelich the line of 76/11/51/.278/22 and I’ll also give him my fake ID; he just needs to grow a mustache.

holy shit even though with these “To think, just last year he still had a newspaper route and was going to the Junior Prom (with a Senior!)” ,you are know ripping off your own jokes (unless there’s a time machine that comes with lawyers no theft here) it’s so funny since everyone remembers no Popov bringers anywhere ever bringing up chasers, and often you got a weird look for even mentioning chasers/mixers around that guy. Remember blue (50%) label? Here’s to Babip driven Popov driving him in, or him driving in Country Club.

Ok, I’ve spent half an hour looking and now I have to go potty. Can you link (Rudy’s I think?) post converting your rankings to auction dollare values? Like the one that says picks 1-5 are worth $38, 6-10 are worth $35, etc?

Thanks–I shall use my handy dandy electronic bookmark and shan’t bother you with this again.

Looking forward to Monday–putting odds at 3 to 1 that we don’t see Ryan Braun in top 10, which makes me sad.

Top 10 Prediction (it gets hairy fast)
    1. Trout
    2. Miggy
    3. AuShizz
    4. McCutchen
    5. A Jones
    6. Cargo
    7. Davis
    8. Cano
    9. Braun
    10. Votto

    • Fungazi says:
      (link)

@AdamH: I don’t think Grey likes Cargo because of the injury risk. He didn’t make top ten last year and just went on to get hurt as predicted. Maybe E5 or Prince make it in instead.

      • JoeC says:
        (link)

@Fungazi: I don’t know. I think you *have* to put Cargo up there. Even with the injury risk, he’s almost guaranteed to put up at least 20/20 and hit .300. That’s first round material in these thin hitting times.

I’ll probably be drafting him in my main league, since I pick 7th. Just have to hope he gets 500 ABs.

      • AdamH says:
        (link)

@Fungazi: I feel ya. But there isn’t much else to choose from. When he plays, he is awesome. I think a case could be made for Longo somewhere in there. Who else? Will he trust Hanley? Fat and declining Prince? I don’t fully trust E5.

        • Fungazi says:
          (link)

@AdamH: I’ve seen some rankings with those two as well as Hanley, Tulo, even Ellsbury in the top 10. Razzball rankings are not typical though, which is why we appreciate them so much.

@JoeC I traded for Cargo in a keeper last year, so luckily don’t have to make the choice this time. He’s a stud when he plays and constantly seems to have 4/4 days with a bunch of other goodies in the numbers.

Yes!! A Yelich article!! And very true on the Popovs I think some college friends lost vision because of that shizz…any the hoo, since christian didn’t have massive power and speed #’s last year, his avg was pretty good for an adjusting rook and that silky smoove swing of his could sit him closer to .300 I’m hoping and tho Miami is spacious, remember that yelich had 5 spring training hrs last year so a 15 hr campaign may not be unquestionable but I’m splitting hairs here now-thanks for the article and it’s nice of you to offer him your fake ID-I hear he likes drinking Shirley temples while watching rugrats on Saturday AMs…

        @Grey:

I’d take him at the right price. If the discount were deep enough. I’d probably want to know if he’s getting fat again. He lost some weight last year and pitched worse. Some guys are just better playing heavy.

I know there are a lot of miles on that arm and it’s possible he’s on a downward trend that he’s not coming back from, but for some reason I suspect a little bounce back. I think he brings his walk rate back down closer to his career average and just hold the line at 7.5 k/9 or so with those peripherals he’s probably still as sub 4 era guy with 180 Ks.

@Oaktownsteve: The VERY BEST part of Grey’s game is when he says to AVOID a player. His olfactory senses are superb. Track record on these impeccable. Best listen to him…hitter or pitcher.

              • Wake Up says:
                (link)

@simply fred: He’s being saying to avoid Sabathia for the last 4 years in a row…bound to get it right eventually…that being said, he did nail it last year!

            • @Oaktownsteve: I thought Sabathia was undervalued last year come draft time but he proved me wrong. In retrospect, maybe there was a slight sign or two he was on the downward slope (FB speed from 94 to 92, had a DL stint) but i thought it was worth the gamble at the time.

But once a SP shows a two year trend of declining stuff, I stay away as well. That was my take on Lincecum and Haren last year. Of course, every guy is draftable in some league/format but i’d be surprised if he made it onto any of my teams next year….

I do love Yelich this year, seems like the kind of player you could get after the 18th round that could turn into a top 75 player. Then again he could end up back in the minors too but his price won’t burn you. Then again he plays for the Marlins so he won’t end up in the minors. Seems like the perfect late round 4th OF/Util guy that rounds out your stats. Doesn’t hurt you anywhere.

13-team, 38-player roster, auction keeper league. Do I keep any of the following sleepers for the listed price, or toss ‘em back and hope to get them cheaper:

    Yelich $14
    Brad Miller $14
    Todd Frazier $6

    Thanks!

On a whirlwind through nicaragua and was able to watch the rivas gigantes absolutely wreck the chilandenga tigres to advance to the final. Best game I’ve ever been to. Rum soaked and half deaf from the 12 piece rag tag band that set up shop right behind me, I come looking for rankings but I seem to have jumped the gun on the arrival. I’m going to go plop on a beach for the weekend. Hasta lunes.

    Grey,
Can’t wait for the rankings. Actually am already in a slow NFBC draft. Quick question, in a 5×5 NFBC league who do you like more Michael Brantely or Avisail Garcia?

    Thanks Grey!

PS: I read everything you write here. I hope Yelich does well or suck this year that way we can hear more jokes about his pimples and learner’s permit

I can keep 5 guys without restrictions. I’ve got Joey Votto, Buster Posey, Stephen Strasburg, Shin Soo Choo, Matt Adams, Matt Carpenter, Matt Harvey (have a NA slot also) and Hunter Pence as my main choices. Who should go the way of Kirk Cameron and be Left Behind? Thanks.

    • Smoketnt says:
      (link)

@Smoketnt: 12 team 8×8, also have Aroldis but saves are high value in 16 cats.

@Smoketnt: saves are ‘not’ high value, sorry

    Hey Grey,
8 team NL keeper league, and I can keep 10. I’m waffling on setting Bruce or Zimmerman free. What do you think?

    $41 McCutchen
    $30 Bruce
    $21 AuShizz
    $7 Gyorko
    $4 Segura
    $4 Marte
    $1 Matt Adams

    $17 Zimmerman
    $14 Waino
    $14 MadBum
    $1 KJansen

I won last year thanks to your draft advice. Thanks for all you do!

  42. Chris says:
    (link)

Keeper league, AL-Only. Keep 8 each season but every five years is a reset where everyone becomes a free agent. This is the reset year so you can keep guys for the full 5 seasons who are drafted this year. My question is how high should players like Bogaerts go in that format?

  43. Chris says:
    (link)

So I have a keeper league up to 4 players to keep. If drafted I get to keep the players for 3 years at that pick. If player was not drafted by you in previous year but kept for ’14, you get the player with a discount of 3 rounds off ADP. I.e. (we use yahoo) if player is offseason ranked for 10th round I get the player in 13th round.
This is my last year with Trout in the 22nd round.
My options I am leaning toward this year, are Wil Myers get him in 15th round, and Gerrit Cole 25th round. I can not figure out who I should keep with my fourth.
I picked up Pujols and Braun after they were dropped at end of year. Which would mean I should be able to get them with 8th-10th round picks. Which could be really good value. I also have Adam Eaton 12th round, Teheran 14th, Gyorko 9th (was big on him last year) Then I have Yelich, Wacha, Gray, Arenado, Springer, and Taveras who will all be at the ADP plus 3 value I mentioned earlier. I have 1st rounder 2 2nds and 2 5ths still available, so i should be able to reach for some of these guys after my season fell apart last year. Who should I build upon for my future?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      Pujols

      • Chris says:
        (link)

@Grey: And you think the other two are my best values Cole (25th) and Myers (15th)? I see Myers having a sophomore slump or teams figuring him out, which is what scares me.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

See no reason to think Myers will slump…
